Postcards from the Lake: Road Trip to Harbor Springs

While Kate and I were at Art Camp we decided (for the first time in all our art camp years!) to do a road trip. And it was a very special occasion.

We were off to the charming town of Harbor Springs, Michigan, to meet up with artist Elizabeth Pollie -- whom Kate hadn't seen since she babysat for her decades before! It was an afternoon filled with fun, laughter and a delightful visit to a charming town.

Elizabeth is a fabulous oil painter and it was a joy to visit the beautiful gallery she owns and see her work and that of the artists she represents.

This painting of a sailboat was one of my favorites.

And so was this -- the feathers on the horses legs seemed to move!

Here's a closer look.

This was another favorite. I could tell stories from these paintings!

And of course, one has to love the black cat under a harvest moon. (Well, this one does, at least!)

This was another favorite.

And this one. My photographs are not very good and don't begin to do the vibrant colors or mysterious subject justice,

Elizabeth also does en plein air painting and recently joined in a plein air event called "Paint Traverse City." These are some of her plein air paintings (not all from Paint Traverse City 2022).

After enjoying the art (and a tasty lunch -- a Caprese Omelet for me -- Elizabeth took us on a tour about town, enjoying some of the shops and lovely alley ways that abound in the small bayside town.

She took us to one of the loveliest views of the city, high on a bluff. From there you could both the town...

...and the beautiful Little Traverse Bay.

Nope. Couldn't beat the view!

We even caught a glimpse of several of the local residents, including this one!

There were lots of delightful things about the day -- good conversation, loads of wonderful art, a fun day away from the lake, and I even bought a cute jacket! But the best part was seeing two friends, long apart, reunited.

A wonderful day!

Hello,
Sounds like a fun road trip. Love the views of the water from the bluff. The deer is sweet. Lovely collection of art work, the gallery looks beautiful too. I like the cat, dog and horses and the painting of the sailboat. Take care, have a happy day!

Woow, such great work!!!
Caprese Omelet sounds great! Better than the half Currywurst with Fries I had today.
Despite we ran around all day on the rail-exhibition I still feel way too full.

What a nice town and residents :-)
LOL, and a train!

To meeting friends!

I love all the art you've shared. BTW have you ever taken an en plein air workshop? I have been tempted to sign-up for one or two of them. I giggled because you showed so many animal paintings...you love animals like I do!!!

Great road trip! Wow art!
The sailboat is stunning. Gorgeous views.
The printed top one is wearing, what is the label, please?

A wonderful day indeed and isn't Elizabeth an amazing artist? Thanks for letting us tag along;)

The paintings are truly beautiful, but I will never understand why such gorgeous paintings are put in such terrible frames. Maybe it's just me... the frame shouldn't distract from the artwork. It looks like a lovely little town and seeing some of the four-legged residents is so nice. But oh the joy of seeing a friend!

I really like this post. She is a very talented artist with a deft hand and sure eye for detail. Your photo of Traverse Bay and the boats would make a great watercolor painting by you. Bring out your paints and brush. And where is your photo of your omelet???

Cool, I need to start getting out and doing more of that sort of stuff. I used to all the time, life got in the way.

It looks like a great day! I've never been to Traverse City or environs, even though my sister-in-law is from there. I love the painting with the house and the fireflies in the yard. It's very hard to depict fireflies and I think Elizabeth did an amazing job.

What beautiful art in a beautiful town. I especially loved the painting of the two horses outside the old building. Not sure why but it drew me back to look a couple of times. Maybe--like you--I imagined a story... :)

That mysterious painting with the gorgeous colors? That sure looks like an abstract image of a sailboat in dry dock. Of course it's my favorite of the group! I'm glad you shared them all with us; it looks like a wonderful day. We're still hothothot -- but the end of all that is nigh: another week, maybe, and we'll have our front.

Bleubeard asked me why I can't paint like that beautiful Elizabeth. I told him because he was stuck with me and she wasn't. Her work is phenomenal. Simply wonderful. It's amazing how many artists she must represent and still have her own work, too. Both a great artist and an amazing business woman. What a great day right down to the caprese omelet.

What a great road trip, Jeanie! It sounds like the perfect outing. Elizabeth is a talented and versatile artist. I really love her draft horses. I have a special place in my heart for these big horses, which is odd because I'm scared of horses and these are the biggest. Harbor Springs is definitely a charming town. May October be filled with more friendship and art for you!
