Postcards from the Lake: A Jolly Fourth

Finally! The lake! And just in time for the Fourth. Lizzie spent most of the evening in the linen closet but the "real" fireworks were great. (I wasn't so thrilled with the "independent" versions! Too close!

We got here early in the week. There is nothing better than that first grilled out dinner up north!

That first night's sunset was pretty fabulous!

Of course there is loads of work to be done on the house. We accomplished quite a bit while Rick was here and I have a rather long list myself!

But it looks like summer! Flowers and lakes and all things good.

My cousins were here for the holiday. Rick was glad to have David help us wrangle out a problems in a NYTimes crossword!

After too many years, we connected with their daughter, Heather, who was here with her friend Mike, a great guy! Good to see another generation at the old family cottage down the way.

And we celebrated Bonnie's birthday!

I made the wonderful Swedish visiting cake from Marie's blog for the celebration. It's super easy and was a real hit!

Then came time for the fireworks, which were on the sixth. We have a ringside seat, right across the lake from where they shoot them off.

And yes, they were terrific. (Note the crescent moon in the sky!)

I leave you with another sunset.

They're pretty lovely up here!

Maybe when you and Rick get really old this whole scene will be like On Golden Pond! I used to own a cottage in Muskoka and enjoyed it while my daughter was young, but eventually I got tired of taking care of two properties and going to the same place weekend after weekend and sold it.

I love that area of Michigan. There is nothing better than a cottage on a lake, especially over the 4th.

It must be fantastic to be back at the lake. I should reword that. It is fantastic-I can tell by your photos. Looks like you had a super 4th. I didn't do fireworks this year and I missed not seeing them, but your photos make up for that. Good shots Jeanie! Hugs-Erika

Fun times. We have a cousin with large acreage and a pond that we can ride on bumper boats and much more.
Every so often they have a family reunion party and it’s great to see everybody. How nice you got to view the fireworks with a ringside setting!

Yay for lake time! Are you feeling better? I hope so! Glad you had Rick's help around the cabin. There's always so much to do when you open the place up. I remember that from back when we didn't go to the cabin in the winter.

I did not see a single firework this year! I heard plenty, though! I guess a guy down the road from my parents spent $4k on fireworks. Crazy. What a way to burn up a bunch of money! :P I like fireworks but I like them less now that I'm a mom of a toddler! Luckily paul slept through them. he sleeps in a bunkroom (in a crib) and the bunkroom has no windows so it's quiet and dark which is perfect for a baby!

Hello,

Looks like fun times with the family at the cottage and on the 4th of July. I love the firework images and your beautiful sunset. The flowers are lovely. Have a happy day!

I'm really intrigued by that Swedish visiting cake. Despite the stories all over the web about friends who had friends who had Swedish friends who made it, I grew up in a Swedish household in the midst of a Swedish community, and I've never heard of it. My grandmother baked every day, and she never made it. Maybe there are recipes that came from different parts of the old country. I did check the recipe and it looks wonderful.

When I first saw the handles on the salad tongs, I thought they were shishkabob skewers, and I wondered what in the world you people were grilling up there!

Well this looks just perfect! And guess what, I was planning on making one of those cakes for Tony's birthday but I could only find a slightly wacky vegan style one, OR one which is in US cups and had a couple of ingredients I couldn't find. So you can imagine how pleased I am!

Jenny Woolf said...

Oh I just saw the recipe is in cups after all... ah well, it's still simpler than the vegan one. :)

I love your visits to your cabin. How fun it would be to watch the fireworks right from the beach. And the sunset at the end is just sooo very special.
