Postcards From the Lake -- Hello, September

So, here we are. Early September. Time to start packing up. Summer is over, and though we will return to the cottage two or three more times, we have to admit, summer is over.

The shadows are longer, the days shorter. I'm not ready, but we move on.

We wrapped our last couple of days at the cottage with a little fun, a little work, a little play. (And a road trip -- that's for next time.) For Rick, it was a couple of good rides.

For me, time to paint. I did a "taster" class with artist Louise Fletcher, dealing with "Finding your Joy" in art. It also meant working way outside of our comfort zone, dealing in part with abstract painting and just "letting go."

I rather liked this technique and decided to do some bookmarks in the same way. These need trimming and a little touch-up but you get the idea.

The second project involved using materials you don't often use or using them in different ways, with the subject of our choice. So, for the first one, I used only a make-up sponge, straw and fork with watercolor. I should have done the other guideline -- colors you don't normally use -- but somehow, I just couldn't make the pines pink! (Or any other color for that matter!)

The second part of the project was to use materials you usually do, along with something(s) you liked from the first project. I just used my brush, a gel marker (favorites) and my new favorite, the sponge. It was a great project for getting out of your zone and trying something new.

My buddy, Harry North, made another appearance -- actually, more than one.

He's such a stately creature, fishing so deliberately in the shallows.

He can't have nailed anything big -- more like an appetizer. But he was content.

Another nature sighting -- this little flicker.

It was the first of the flickers I'd seen this year.

And, despite cool, windy weather, enjoyed a cook-out with my cousin Jack.

Rick and I did a final birthday celebration at my favorite up-north restaurant, Bennethums.

They have a wonderful Happy Hour with delicious appetizers. We enjoyed the mushroom flatbread, salmon cakes and mussels.

The next day, the temperatures dropped, so we were lucky to enjoy our time outdoors!

I went up to the bigger farm market. The fall produce is coming in. In another week, it should be even more abundant.

There were a few more walks. And more than a few color changes.

We aren't seeing a lot of falling leaves yet -- but they are starting.

Evenings are quiet. Computer time, maybe a movie or streaming show.

And the sunsets are still colorful.

It's all so lovely. So fleeting.

But I'm just not ready to bid summer farewell for this year! So next time, one more summer road trip!

This time of year is really lovely, but as you stated, fleeting. I really like seeing your abstract paintings and book marks. I want to try some abstract painting, just moving colors around to make me happy. I'm not sure if I can cut that lose though, so good for you. Enjoy this beautiful season, and let's hope its not too fall like too soon. hugs-Erika

How gorgeous! I like your art and the items you used. Who knew you could use a straw?!
You have a magnificent eye for beauty.

I love-love-love your abstract art!! That looks like such fun, too. I might have to try something like that. Was just watching a lady on youtube yesterday doing something similar. :)
Fall is my favorite time of year. Looks so beautiful there. Nice to see Harry up close. And a flicker! So seldom see pictures of them. I caught bugs for some young ones in a tree whose mother had died when I was about ten. They have a special place in my heart.
What a nice personal card you got from the restaurant, too! Looks like it was a very special birthday. Happy Wednesday! :)

What a lovely bunch of photos to end your summer postcard series. One of my favorite thing about walking country roads is the shadows the trees make at certain times of the day and one of your photos is of that exact thing. Warms my heart. I also notice you had a straw with your paints? One of the ladies here was experiencing with putting paint on the end of a straw and blowing it around the paper. Didn't turn out very well, in my opinion, but she kept trying to prefect the process. There's always something new to try in the world of creativity, isn't there.

Enjoy this wonderful time of the year. It was so chilly last night I could have used a light jacket, which is unheard of around here. Happy week!

I like the pic of Rick through the glass with the reflections and a the long view across in the sunset.

In your comment on my blog, you meant Hawaii, not Alaska. Akaka Falls is in Hawaii.

It seems that summer left in a flash. Great experiments with your paintings. Love the abstracts. Harry North is always on the case even when summer begins to fade. :)

Your eyes are such a beautiful blue!
What a wonderful amount of artwork. I really should get doing some.
These are the colours we are seeing. I think I am ready.

...I like the vertical blue tone abstracts. Enjoy as many sunsets as you can.

Experimenting with art is quite a venture for the artist. I suppose you get to learn a lot from this.

Lovely post Jeanie! The paintings are wonderful, I love the Finding your Joy images and the pretty Pines! Great captures of the Heron and the Flicker. Beautiful sunset! Take care, have a great day!

I would be so sad having to move away from your beautiful lake. Hope the weather stays good for a little bit longer

I love both pine paintings but am impressed how few tools you used for the first one!

I'm not ready to let go of summer yet either since I know what comes next... It's still very nice here - chillier in the mornings but warm and sunny during the day. I hope it lasts and lasts!!!

You've shared some lovely photographs and I enjoyed seeing your art too.
Autumn is such a lovely season, the colours always look amazing, and yes, the nights draw in but the days can still be so special.
Enjoy September.

All the best Jan

Your paintings are original and pleasure to see. The mussels look so delish!

Your paintings are so amazing. watercolors have always been difficult for me, maybe I should try them again. I miss fall. I grew up in Illinois, where there are 4 seasons. Fall there always was impressive. Here in S. California, we have basically one season: kinda cooler summer, stinkin' hot summer, summer/spring with some rain, and jacket summer.

That is such a beautiful place. I wouldn't want to leave it either. I've been shopping at a local farmers market more than usual this year. They've had the best apples!

Cindy said...

I forgot to mention your paintings! They are beautiful! Those bookmarks - the blues and browns - I've been obsessed with those colors lately. And your trees are so pretty! I bet it was fun to try different tools and techniques.

Fall is bitter sweet - a beautiful season but the end of the summer fun too. Love your art as usual. I hope you have a great weekend.

Enjoy the one more summer road trip. What beautiful colors beginning to appear in your surroundings. Love, love when you play with different techniques in your art.

I'm not ready, either.... today was a summery 86, but not for long, and that was the end of that "heat wave." But a September heat wave is way different from August.

I love this time of year in SW Missouri as it is usually cool in the evenings, a little cooler most days but then those 90's pop back up-we are getting that tomorrow--enjoyed seeing your art-hugs

Happy birthday, Jeanie. Your foray into the world of abstract paintings seems to have been a great success; the bookmarks are very appealing. Yes, fall is making its presence felt. For early morning birding I am already wearing a sweatshirt, but I really enjoy the crispness. I am looking forward to the first frost.

What lovely days you had at the summer house. Beautiful, atmospheric photos. I really love the bookmarks and the surrealistic paintings you did. Wonderful. Nice memories to think of during cold winter months.

It must be sad to leave the lakeside, but I'm sure there are more adventures ahead. I love autumnal days too. Your photos are wonderful. I hope you enjoy your trip and I look forward to seeing where you go.

I wonder why you only stay here in the summer. It's such a beautiful place...I think I'd live there all year long.

But maybe it gets too cold. I didn't think of that. We only get a couple of freezes a year, if that. We don't really experience changing seasons, though we have been told that a cold front is coming Friday. Temps down in the mid-60s at night. Happy day!

shoreacres said...

I really like your abstract bookmarks. I'm glad you tried out some new techniques! As for summer departing, that's hard for me to wrap my mind around. But, a cool front is on the way, and by the end of the weekend we may have lows in the upper 60s! I can't wait to be able to go out without sweating again!

It is all so lovely. And fleeting. True words! I am not ready to turn the page and fully enter the coming season either, but I am enjoying the slow shift in that direction. It must be a yearly experience of melancholy and nostalgia to close up the lake house for the season. I’m glad you have a few more times to experience it this year. Loved the bookmarks, and the way your experiments went.

I remember when I was young I would tell my mother how I couldn't wait to grow up and she said don't wish your life away it goes faster and faster the older you get. She wasn't wrong. This seemed like the fastest summer ever.

Yes the leaves are starting to turn over here as well. Summer is fast leaving us it seems. I could not have made those pine trees pink either. You did a fantastic job on them. Janice

First.... Happy Birthday to you! Cheers to another trip around the sun. Ah, summer is winding up. I assume for you in the north means cold air begins to arrive gradually, then full force. Here in the south, cold air arrives much later, and it feels like a long spring. Beautiful photos. Thanks for sharing.

What a beautiful reflection on the end of summer!
I love how you embraced creativity with your art projects and experimented with new techniques.
Your descriptions of Harry North fishing and the flicker’s visit bring the cottage’s charm to life.
It sounds like you made the most of these final days with a mix of fun, nature, and creativity.

Have a great weekend, Jeanie!

It DOES seem like summer went fast this year. I love the picture of Rick on his computer, with the reflected sunset! Maybe you'll get an Indian summer and the warmer temperatures will hang on a while longer. We seem to be well on our way to autumn here.

{{Sigh}} fall comes so early, but it is so beautiful in your area. Here, we already have leaves falling, but it's because of the extreme drought. I'm not sure how colorful we'll be this year in Almost Heaven. I hope you've arrived home safely and buttoned everything up at the lake.

It's been a wonderful summer, and we do hate to let it go, here in our northern climates, miles apart, as I am in Idaho :) Fall is so lovely though - much to enjoy. The simple things of life are so special! Happy birthday to you! What a special way for the restaurant to celebrate your birthday! Love your special bird guest, handsome and so fun to watch! Many blessings to you :)

Your lake pictures always remind me of what I left behind when we had to move (long story). I do still so miss my lake house and lake life. I am green with envy that you get to go back each summer. Meanwhile, I love your fall pictures and your art. The colors are luscious ...
I love Harry North. We had an awesome Great Grey Heron who hunted our shore and then came up in the yard and went after the chipmunks. They are impressive birds. And the sweet Flicker ... like I said, I miss being surrounded by naturel. So Happy Birthday to you. It is always a good excuse to gather with family and who can say no to a piece of cake :), though it isn't any fun to be reminded that we are a year older. Another delightful post, Jeanie ...
