Here's another of my treasures from late summer at the lake. Can you guess what it is?
Oh, come on! Did you say "deep sea monster""?
No, I must not have heard correctly. You said "coral!"
Nope! Is deep sea alien or brother from another planet getting any votes? How about microcamera photos from my colonoscopy?
No, I told you it wasn't coral!
Desecrated bone from some poor unfortunate?
Yup. It looks pretty disgusting but that isn't it, either.
Let's step back a little. Maybe it's a cake for tea?
One of those cocoa bumpy cakes? Nope!
I think you almost have it!
Here's a final clue!
Right! A fantastic fungi! It was about seven or eight inches at its widest point and the biggest I'd ever seen! A little creepy -- but a lot of fun!

I must admit . . . I guessed it from the "get go!"
Great pictures from all angles though . . .
We have had more fungi, mushrooms than ever this year . . .
I think you get the prize for the largest!
For the first two photos, I thought it was a sea sponge, then realized it was a huge mushroom. Wonderful close-up shots and a fun way to tease us.
Ah yes, indeed very clever. But at first in the small photo what came to mind was blueberry muffins and frosting! Really and truly!
Ha! I thought that first photo was chocolate chip cookies. I've been on this low-carb diet too long. What a beautifully fanciful fungi. And low in carbs!!
Excellent photos. I haven't seen one of those for a very long time.
I did have a feeling... but I loved scrolling through your post and looking at all the different angles. What a great idea! It really makes you look more closely.
Okay, I guessed it, we have a lot of monster fungi here, the biggest was more than a yard wide, they are always so amazing. un post, thanks for the guessing game! Hugs, Valerie
Yikes, glad it wasn't your colonoscopy photos! That's a monster mushroom.
How fun! And what a great find!
Well, I knew darn well it wasn't cake. lol
It was scary....... Sounds like you have had a marvelous summer this year.
Have a great week.

My goodness that's a whopper. Great shots from all the angles, you must be quite the contortionist!
Bon dimanche.
GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!! I thought it was coral, then I thought it was a pancake of some kind! teeheheheee
The mushroom was invited to all the parties because he was a "fun-guy!"
Wow- what a crazy mushroom. How did you discover it? Were you out on a walk or was it in a "museum"? it is pretty amazing. Happy rest of your weekend. Hugs-Erika
I can hear my dad now, "there's a fungus among-us!"
Fascinating and creepy stuff. Always makes me shiver just a little.
You must be getting much more moisture than we are.
I love the way you narrate your photos - so fun to ride along:)

I thought fungus, but I thought it might have been chicken-of-the-woods,and it seems to be a different species. The faux chickeny one only grows on trees, I think. I've become fascinated by the variety of species out there -- a couple of the photographers I follow are fond of them, so I get to see them from time to time.
All we get where I tend to spend my days are the smooth white, fairy-ring sorts. Thanks for sharing this far more interesting one!
What a stunning, incredible masetrpiece of Nature, dearest Jeanie, thank you for sharing such a charming thing with us !
Hope your week is off to a good start
I'm sending hugs and ever much love to you,

I was several pictures in before I guessed - and yes, it is quite spectacular. As are your pictures. I'm not sure I could ever have got such detailed close ups. I do love photographing fungi, even though they are, shall we say, a bit "hmmmm...." ! So I enjoyed looking at these.
Yes fantastic!
