On my last morning at the lake, Rick and I did our "color tour." Our plan was to venture north to the town of Petoskey, lunch with our friends, Pat and Susan, meet up with oldest kid Greg and then just fool around, ending up the day back at the cottage. Alas. It wasn't raining, but it wasn't glorious sunshine of the two days before. The colors were muted.
But they were still lovely as we made the 45 minute drive north, occasionally seeing blue sky, the farther north we went.
The day was shaping up quite nicely!
It was good to see Pat and Susan again. They retired to Petoskey several years ago but we have much in common and the conversation was as lively as if we'd seen them days before!
Then it was off to visit Greg. He lives in what he calls The Tiny House, between Petoskey and the village of Harbor Springs. I was glad I had an extra Abdul yard sign, which he immediately set out by the road.
Greg's Tiny House is nestled onto a woodland lot and there was a wonderful firepit outside.
We sat around just enjoyed really terrific conversation until it was time to leave.
Next destination? Harbor Springs. This is the kind of tiny, charming village you would see in a Hallmark movie, with cute shops on the main street and, one block to the west, the expanding view of Little Traverse Bay. Rick happily checked out the real estate signs.
The town was decked for the season with a skeleton theme. I'll show you more of these closer to Halloween, but they did have a "photo booth."
There was still plenty of color to be seen in some of the displays . . .
. . . the holiday motifs. . .
. . . and the still-beautiful flowering boxes.
Many of the boats had been hauled in for the season, but a number remained and we enjoyed a walk along the harbor boardwalk.
And, after we finished our walk through the rest of town, headed back toward home via the road along the beach. These "summer cottages" are a tad large for me! But they can probably afford a cleaning lady!
But I wouldn't mind this for a front-window view!
I'll leave you with a few views of our final destination, and longtime readers of Marmelade Gypsy will have seen similar photos in the past years. This is Treetops Resort in Gaylord.
If you are a golfer, you may have seen this spot in the summer as it often hosts PGA tournaments.
In the winter it is a ski resort and the views are beautiful, with the hilly terrain adding to the scope of the scenery.
Rick had to check out the ski lift mechanism! One does feel at the top of the world.
Timing is everything and what started as a gloomier day had turned beautiful. Now, with the western sun hitting the colors, it was dazzling.
Our day wrapped up with a stop at Treetops' bar and then dinner in town. All good -- but they paled in comparison to a glorious day out, time with friends and with Greg. . .
. . . and all that color!
