Postcards from the Lake: Signs of Fall

It doesn't matter whether I want it to stay sunny and 80 for another two months or not -- fall is just around the corner astronomically -- and I think meteorologically, it is already here, at least at the lake.

My walk shows the tail end of summer and the early signs of fall. Things begin branch by branch.

And they get brighter by the day.

Goldenrod is plentiful. And quite beautiful.

I'm not sure what the little white ones behind it are, but together they are beautiful.

The berries that were coppery in this post are turning to a lovely red.

The astors have come out, too.

The sumac is looking deep red and interesting.

There are the last of the summer blooms. This spot made me smile.

And this one, too.

And what's not to love about sunflowers?

There were a couple of interesting fungi coming out. This one looks a bit like a stone.

And this one just looks very sad.

I leave you with a few colorful branches...

.... a lovey spot by the lake...

And because I love them so, sunflowers.

If you live in the north, cherish these glorious days while you can.

Winter is long.

Beautiful signs of Fall showing up already in your area, Jeanie. The Goldenrod is very pretty. I love that picture of the red flowers in the window box. When will you be leaving this glorious place?

I hope you have a sweet September week, Jeanie.

oh yes, these days must be cherished. It is now getting dark at 7 PM here. and tonight they say temperatures in the 40's. Brr. Frost will be here before we know it. Not that I am in any rush for it, but fall is such a pretty time of year also. Love your photos today Jeanie. Your scenery is beautiful also. Hope all is well. Hugs-Erika

Looks like you're having an early fall, earlier than what we have here in Alberta. I just heard on the radio while driving today that we'll have a mild fall this year. Even now, we don't have any yellow leaves yet or red shrubs. But what we have are HAZE and SMOKE from CA's wild fires! Vancouver has the worst air quality in the whole world these few days!

Since I don't live in the north, I don't feel the sadness of Autumn approaching, Jeanie. The goldenrod and sumac is so lovely in your photos. And yes, sunflowers are the happiest of all. I hope your new week is starting off well.

I hate sumac, as beautiful as it is to look at. Your camera has captured the best of fall. Enjoy that cottage as long as you can.

Oh gosh, i hate to see the summer's end, I love being at the lake with you...The final photo does not make me envious, though. You have had such a fine summer, thank you for all of the lovely photos!

Oh, how I love Autumn days, and all the glorious colour. This year, adverse weather means very few leaves are left to turn, so I live my delight vicariously through your photos.

Hello Jeanie,

I love all the beautiful flowers and colorful blooms. The leaves are so pretty in Autumn. The days are getting shorter and the mornings are chilly.
Winter is not my favorite season. Your photos are beautiful, lovely series. Take care, have a great day!

My guess is that the white flowers behind the goldenrod are a species of fleabane, but the picture doesn't show sufficient detail to be sure. They are there to be enjoyed whatever the name. Fall is nudging its way in here too, Jeanie. There was a possibility of frost last night. It is still dark but as soon as there is sufficient light I will look out the window to see if the neighbour's roof is white. New England Asters seems to be blooming everywhere and the final cohort of hummingbirds are fattening up for the long and arduous journey ahead of them. Unfortunately, many of them will not make it. At least they are able to travel outside Ontario!

I am hoping for some crisp fall weather to rear it's head, not this chilly damp stuff.

Thank you for sharing such beautiful pictures! I hate that fall is upon us as I truly enjoy the warm air, but I do love fall for the cooler evenings, the colors, and some of the special things that appear in fall- pumpkins, scarecrows, etc.

The beginnings of fall look pretty where you live. Not looking forward to winter!

Dearest Jeanie, all these colors oh my! I just can't wait until it's autumn and see captures you'll be sharing to all of us because I love Autumn and I dream that someday I can experience it too for myself but for now, your pictures and walks do me very well and happy in my desk :)

Although I adore fall I know my winter..and again although beautiful..it's the guest that overstays it's welcome..

The colors are spectacular. I have been fascinated by fungi lately and love seeing those two. Each is so different. The first picture should be a painting, it is stunning. Love the window box too. Thanks for sharing a bit of sunshine. Right now it is so dull and grey here I loved seeing your pictures.

It’s going to be in the 80s here today so we are getting a bit more summer weather which I am happy about - especially now that the humidity is so low. I do love fall, though. It reminds us that there is beauty in letting go. I am starting to see some orange leaves on trees so in a month, our neighborhood will be gorgeous as there are so many maples and oaks and other beautiful mature trees. That’s one of the reasons we love our area of the city. There just nothing like the beauty of mature trees, IMO!

I do hope the white stuff holds off for a looooong time. I just dread the isolation of the winter. At least in March when Covid hit, summer was around the corner. My mental health and mood improved tremendously when we were able to see friends outdoors. I am hoping for a mild winter so we can take walks with friends. I figure I can put the baby in the ergo carrier, bundle up, and put Paul in his sled. We will see our best friends indoors who go to the same daycare. So that will help a bit. But I am scheduling coffees and walks and such like crazy. I have plans to see someone every day from Thursday - Monday!! But i know how fast this season will go so I need to fill up my cup now!!

Jeanie, all the pictures were pretty but the last one. Yuck, how I am dreading that white stuff. I love the sumac trees. Makes me think of the girls and I would go to Brown County state park for a fall trip. Well they were high schoolers. I miss those days and my girls being with me. Blessings to you. Soak up every bit of good times there before you know what, shhh , winter. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

Jeanie, your glimpses of fall are lovely. I especially love the goldenrod by the lake and then the large photo of it. It is certainly pretty in an arrangement if one does not have allergies. I enjoy fall and hope it passes slowly. And, I also don't mind winter. We used to have winters like the photo you posted, but we haven't even had a decent snow for the last several years.

I will miss your Postcards From The Lake once you settle back at home. But, I am sure not as much as you will miss the lake.
Happy day, Jeanie!

I go by the meteorological season way of reckoning, but either way the changes are here. I enjoy the changes and the colors of fall. That goldenrod is gorgeous, and I do love sunflowers.

Beautiful garden views. Here we have the first frost warnings.

What beautiful photos! I can definitely see the signs of fall. The sunflowers are one of my all time favorite flowers. I'm in Florida so no signs of fall here. Thanks so much for visiting, Have a great week! :)

Jeanie, beautiful photos with a strong hint of autumn. I can’t wait for the brilliant colors of fall which is at least six to eight weeks away. Enjoy your time at the lake before you pack up for the season!

Beautiful!! That first photo gave me all the happy. :) Enjoy your days at the lake!

I love your attention to the detail of the changes, Jeanie. I am always startled at seeing the first acorns, first fallen leaves when it's in August, but true fall actually comes a little for us than your region. I do love the signs of fall, but old man winter can stay in his hidey hole for all I care. I particularly don't want to see him this year. It'll be depressing.
Have the Cork Poppers gotten together via Zoom anytime during COVID? You must really miss that social interaction. Heck, I miss your group's get togethers!

Those black-eyed susans against that gorgeous cobalt blue wall -- gorgeous!! If visions could nourish a person, this would be sustenance for a good long while. And, in truth, the whole series is beautiful. Michigan does an amazing swansong this time of year, and you've captured much of these last days of grace.

Sure, winter's coming. But even that has its moments. Maybe you could stay at the lake this winter, take up ice skating. We could all look forward to posts featuring hot cocoa with plenty of marshmallows.

Loved seeing your pictures of
summer flowers moving into some fall colors.
Sweet time of the year . . .
Warm days
Cooler nights
I hope your cottage days can last a bit longer.

It is indeed, lovely at the lake! Your photos share all the color there, and it really does look like fall. We are so dry here, desperately needing rain and we may get it, a lot of it from Hurricane Sally. She is coming ashore around Mobile and causing so much damage already with high tides and rain. Lots of flooding and my heart is heavy for all those affected. Thanks for sharing so much beauty from the lake........

The thought of getting down to 80 degrees fills me with delight. I think we might have slipped down to 89 last night, and for a very brief moment today there was a north breeze. We're all dreaming of what it will be like when it gets down to 70 -- that's winter! The flowers are so pretty. I think we must have some goldenrod around, but I've been spending so much time in east Texas I haven't checked out the prairies and such. Your wonderful photos are encouragement to do that!

Pretty warm today, I´ll enjoy one of the last summer days! Beautiful series but, oh. So sad to turn into the dark side of the year.
But... That´s life, huh.

When I was growing up, the end of summer made me sad. The greens turn to gold, brown, and things seemed to die. I imagined the woods went to sleep during winter and I didn't like it. I wanted the leaves, flowers, etc. I enjoy the season more as an adult who is not quite that fanciful. Lovely photos today. Enjoy the season.

Winter is coming, and personally I'm glad of that. Still, this is a wonderful time of year, with temperatures low enough to be comfortable for me, while days are generally still nice enough to allow you to be outside when you want to be.

Thanks so much, Jeanie, for sharing the lake's fall colors. The earthy hues of autumn always make me feel good and who doesn't need some shoring up once in awhile. I would love to stand in a field of goldenrod even if I did sneeze my brains out!..Stay well..xxoJudy

Fantastic photos! I love autumn, my favorite time of year. We have a very long summer and it is still hot and humid around here. But the early mornings are nippy and hopeful.

These pictures are great, especially that first one. Love that blue fence. What a wonderful contrast with the yellow petals of the brown-eyed Susans.

All very beautiful photos. Autumn seems to be coming early where you are Jeanie! Autumn is my favorite season but it doesn't last long in Colorado as we often have snow in October. Of course this year we had a surprise frost and snow in September. Our winters are surprisingly mild and sunny, however, so I don't mind winter. I just don't like the short daylight hours of winter.

Fall is creeping in here in NH and it's my favorite season. Some leaves are turning, but so slowly. We are hoping that lots of out-of-state leaf peepers will stay home this year as the back roads should be very lovely in a couple of weeks and we're doing day trips at home. Yes, there's everything to love about sunflowers!

When are the fall leaves at their peak in Michigan? I think we will have a pretty fall this year because we've had so much rain. I like seeing all your nature pictures. I haven't been out too much because of my asthma and I can't wear a mask for very long at all because of it.

I will just have to go back through your posts and look at your pretty photos. You need to tell me more about Michigan winters for my daughter. She was accepted into Michigan's post doc program in the medical school's neuro-imaging lab. She has only lived in the South, and she's never been to the Midwest during winter!
