Once again, life is a bit slow. Rick just returned from Florida this week, where he spent time with his dad and saw old friends. He got to travel -- now I am armchair traveling! It's time to share long-ago travel photos from the archive!
 |
| Lots more than 1,000 cranes -- taken in Hiroshima's peace park. |
This time it is Japan. I think we went in the early 2000s. (I track this by our having come together in 1996 and the trip seemed like a few years after!) Rick has been many times, sometimes for work and sometimes for pleasure, and made many friends, some of whom had lived here while on an exchange mission for a year. He was very involved with our regional Japan-America society, serving as their interim director for some time and we have a sister city in Otsu. So the connections are deep.
 |
| Dinner with Rick's friends from an earlier trip. A lovely time and interesting new flavors! |
The rest of this post is photos and captions (There are a lot of them!) Enjoy!
Tokyo
 |
| The Diabutsu |
 |
| You can see how massive it is! |
 |
| This one ended up being one of my better-selling cards! |
Chigasaki
 |
Chigasaki is about 35 miles from Tokyo. We had a great view from this dock! Otsu and Kyoto | Our friends in Otsu. Naoki and Kanako spent a year in the US. We stayed with them and their parents. |
|
 |
| Naoki's mom was a massage therapist. And a good one! |
 |
Lots of sightseeing -- I wish I could remember the name of this one! Update: Pamela -- who knows every shrine and temple in Japan -- says she thinks this is Ginkakuji, the Silver Pavilion! Thank you! That definitely sounds familiar! |
 |
| Shopping in Kyoto |
 |
| A visit to another friend took us to a noodle making class! |
Yamagata
 |
Yamagata is in the mountains. This was our ryokan room. |
 |
And this was our breakfast -- enormous! |
 |
| This fellow was in the ryokan, making Kokeshi dolls. |
 |
| And these are the dolls. And yes, I bought one. |
 |
| We were here for Rick's business and our hosts took us on a fabulous day out! It was like Shangri-la. |
 |
| We were at the top of the world! |
Hiroshima and Miyajima
 |
| In Hiroshima we stayed with RIck's friend Kiyo (far right), who hosted a gathering of friends. |
 |
| Kiyo took us to Miyajima where the deer are hungry little beggars! |
.jpg) |
| The Torii at the Miyajima shrine. |
Japan is an interesting country and I've barely scratched the surface. For me, it is flood of memories of new experiences and new friends.

Thanks for joining in this armchair road trip!

Hello Jeanie,
It is wonderful to look back at your travel memories. Awesome photos from Japan, I like the photos of you and Rick, all your smiling happy faces. Take care, have a great day and a happy weekend.
ジーニーさん、日本の「おうち旅行」に連れて行ってくださってありがとう。次はどこへ向かうのでしょうか?
Jīnī-san, Nihon no `o uchi ryokō' ni tsureteitte kudasatte arigatō. Tsugi wa doko e mukau nodeshou ka?
These were fun to see. Especially since the only one that looked vaguely familiar was the shrine in Kyoto. I loved visiting Japan. It is such a beautiful country and the people are so nice too. It was a trip of a lifetime for certain. Thanks for sharing and hope your armchair travel won't go on for too too long. Are you counting the days to your surgery? hugs-Erika
Jeanie,
I love your Japan post!
Take a look at the second place in the post below. I think you were at Ginkakuji, the Silver Pavilion. The temple and the bamboo railing look the same.

What wonderful memories here! Love all the pictures and you look like babies--I look back and think how young all of us looked and it doesn't seem like all that long ago. Love the trip pictures! xo Diana
Beautiful photos. What a wonderful trip and memory for you.
...Jeanie, that sounds great, I understand that they speak English with an accent here! Isn't Goggle translate handy?
Thanks for this post, I love the photos so much! We were in Japan in 2012 and it was so fabulous that I'd love to go back! We spent time in Tokyo, Hiroshima and at the Miyajima shrine as well. Yes, those deer loved their Bambi Cookies!
What beautiful photos! I love the closeup of Buddha’s hands. Tokyo is on my husband’s bucket list. I am not so enthralled by the idea of Tokyo for some reason, but the rest of the country looks so beautiful.
How nice to reminisce over the trips you took to Japan. I really enjoyed seeing Japan through your eyes and your lenses. Thanks for sharing.
Wonderful memories of a fascinating country! I would love to travel there. When we started out in California, we had a few friends from Japan who were on an exchange program with my husband's company. Unfortunately they had to go back very suddenly because of job cuts and we eventually lost touch. My husband was in Japan once for work and he came back with so many stories. Your photos are beautiful and tell a lot of stories. I'm not sure I could still do all the sitting on the ground - I'll get down, but getting up will look very ungracefully. Oh well. Does Rick speak Japanese? I enjoyed this post very much, Jeanie.
You've travelled well.
This sure was fun-travelling from my armchair here!.
Dad sold so many SEIKO-watches my parents went to Japan in the 70´s and I still have some items Dad brought here.
To sweet memories and friends!
Lovely memories
