Art camp usually brings warm sunny days and it certainly started out that way. Painting on the porch was a joy -- the sounds of the lake punctuating our foray into color, pattern and image.
More than once we've seen Harry North, our resident heron, stalk the beach for his early morning or twilight meals. And, we had another sighting of Eddie the Eagle, perched high in one of our pines.
And, we've been productive in our art. I did some Christmas cards and a fox. (Does anyone recognize this image as a photo they posted? I saved it several years ago because it was so terrific but forgot to tag it. If so, claim it!) I'm not thrilled about the eyes, but overall, and I think I need to do something to his snout, but overall, I'm pretty happy.
Or, I was -- till I found the original and realized that the coloring was wrong and so much more. So, I did it over. Still a little wonky in the eyes, but I think it might be better.
Here they are together. What do you think?
So, for several days, this is how we worked -- Kate painting at one end of the porch table, me at the other.
Lots of light, lots of color!
Then the weather turned brisk -- temperatures in the low 50s in the morning (and one day, 49!), and not that much warmer in the afternoons. Michigan's weather can be fickle, but this is the coldest I've remembered in mid-to-late August. There was rain, too, but at least one day brought us a rainbow!
Before it got excessively cold, we welcomed our friends Mark and Jan for lunch as they passed through on the way home from their vacation.
After that, we've pretty much been inside, through rainstorms and cold days. At least the sun returned! Rather than painting at the same table, end-to-end, Kate used the desk in the bedroom and I used the pull-out counter in the kitchen. Effective but not as much fun! We've eaten simply but well, swapping off turns in the kitchen.
My newest was a Sandhill crane (the coloring seems off) on a card.
I confess, I didn't like how this turned out either, and upon further examination realized that part of the reason had to do with working from the photo where the color was off a bit. I went back, blurred out the background some and "grayed up" the crane a bit. It's not my best, but a little better.
This cup was from a Charlotte Hamilton tutorial from Este MacLeod's Coloriflori series. I noticed the lid is a bit wonky! I've done another I need to touch up. The tutorial focuses on shadow and was one of my favorites.
And here are a couple from the Sketchbook Scavenger Hunt challenge.
Some of the flowers are still lovely, but fall is definitely in the air.
But -- and it's the saving grace and the best part -- he's surviving and getting second wind and motivation. A fellow in a hardware store fixed his pannier attachment for $1.50 (Canadian). And he has met wonderful people, including one my blog buddies may know -- Jenn of Crumbly Acres and her husband, Joe. (This photo is from Jenn's site -- and she did a wonderful post about Rick's visit that I hope you'll check out!)
When Rick had to reroute his ride due to wildfires, he was going to end up near their home and asked if I could make an introduction. No one, anywhere, could have been more gracious and welcoming than Jenn, who said, "Sure!" and gave him a bed, dinner, and a shower. He was treated like royalty! It came on a sorely needed day and that warmth and welcome. I know I add my thanks to his. (Photo by Jenn!)
He'll took a couple of days in Ottawa and then headed off to the Eastern provinces and Knowlton, home of author Louise Penny. He is under strict orders to bring me Three Pines merchandise -- whatever he can fit in his saddlebags. Magnet? Bookmark? Dare I ask for a t-shirt? I don't need books -- I have all of her wonderful Gamache mysteries! Then on to New Hampshire, Vermont and his brother's in Massachusetts!
Meanwhile, I'll keep painting! And Lizzie will just keep sleeping.
Hopefully, she'll be back on her porch soon!

You're really enjoying your painting time! Such fun.
Sorry it turned cold but still looks like fun time. I love your work!!!
Remember we are in NH if Rick should need a rest on his way through! I did go and visit that blog how kind they were.
Cathy
Even though your sunny days disappeared, it looks like such a fun and productive time! I do think the second fox looked more like the photo. Myself--I couldn't create half what you do! I am impressed by all of it.
So glad Rick made it through the rain and winds--and got his equipment repairs for a song. Wonderful friends to greet him and take him in. I will have to peek at her blog.
Glad you are feeling better!! That is so good to hear. Have a wonderful weekend. :)
Jeanie, beautiful photos. Lizzie is sweet. Your paintings are so nice.
One day... I might live by a lake - for now I enjoy yours! And... your fox looks better! Reminds me of "Le Petit Prince"! Il te faut lui apprivoisé!
Such fun times with the painting together.
It was in the news yesterday: Shitty#st summer in years here. But I hope you made a wish upon that rainbow?
VERY cool car your friends have! Post to come (some time) here! Ingo showed me one, too.
That crane.. wow.
Tiredness... tell me....
I think wild rides you keep the best memories of in the aftermath.
Rick wears a beautiful t-shirt (on your friend´s blog).
I feel like Lizzie...
A lovely happy catch up post. Enjoy the rest of your time at the lake.
Good morning-I really enjoyed reading your post-love your paintings, how fun to paint with a friend, and quite the journey on the bike ride-so glad he was able to stop by your blog friend. we are cooler here too in the evenings but yesterday got up into mid 80's after enjoying 70's for a week-lots of boats here on the lake too. take care Kathy
You’ve painted such a vivid picture of camp life and Rick’s adventurous journey
Glad that Rick received some good Canadian hospitality. As for the weather, it has been cool here of late, but I don’t mind it at all. Great for walking.
Hello Jeanie,
I love all your art work. The Sandhill Crane and Fox are favorites.
Pretty views of the lake, the Eagle, the flowers and the rainbow.
It was nice that Rick was able to meet up with Jenn and Joe.
Gorgeous sunset at the lake. LIzzie looks so cute and comfy.
Take care, enjoy your day and the week ahead.
Wow, I am impressed by Rick's bike trip. Amazing. He must be in very good form.
I like the quiet days you had by the lake being creative. Lovely paintings.
Rick's journey is amazing! And your art camp productive! I love the 2nd fox. Happy when your meds course will be over. Hopefully you'll still be able to enjoy some lake days sans side effects before returning home.
...there's sure a lot going on in your household. I wish you a Spectacular September.
It looks like an enjoyable art week, and even more so, very productive. Too bad for the rain and not being at the table together. Your pieces are great-even the crane. And it seems Rick is having the same weather too. I hope it clears up for him and he can have some nice biking weather. And more safe travels too. Have a wonderful rest of your holiday weekend. hugs-Erika
Congrats on all the paintings Jeanie:) And what a trip for Rick.Oh how lovely they hosted him:) And The Rosebud:) Love it!
I hope the rest of Rick's trip gets better weather! Your artistry amazes me, and even the things you don't like look fabulous to me!
Your art camp has to be just about the best thing.
Rick was very close but took another route into Ottawa.
Your Lizzie is so like our Lacey in both looks and snaps. Although Lizzie's back quarters have not been brutalized. :)
Your paintings are lovely, such a sweet fox face. So glad Rick received a warm welcoming. Lizzie is adorable.
I love your art! You have been busy! And how awesome that Rick got to meet Jenn and her husband. I know that made his trip better! I'm off to read her post! Hugs!
I like your "northern lights" composition at the end! I am not responsible for the fox photo, but it's a great one and I can see why you wanted to paint it. I agree, your second attempt is better.
So funny to see the Rosebud Motel on your blog!
What fun and what creativity.
Rick is having quite the adventure. And how kind of Jenn.
Enjoy the rest of your Labor Day Weekend.
I enjoyed every one of your watercolors, Jeanie. I like BOTH foxes! (The second one looks closer to the reference picture, but the first one is gorgeous as well.) What an amazing talent, hobby, and companion to practice with.
Ricks's adventures are really something and Inspiring in their own way.
You're a power couple for sure!
we'er loving the cooler temps with windows open...and of course cicadas screaming...and what a joy to paint on the porch...fun time at the cottage! Enjoy while you can! Sandi
It is a shame that the weather wasn't nicer but I'm sure that you enjoyed the companionship and painting time together. Love the second tries on both the fox and crane. Karen (Back Road Journal)
Glad things are looking up for Rick and I hope the rest of his bike hike goes smoothly.
Art camp looks like a lot of fun in spite of the weather!
I ❤️ your art, especially the fox. What a lovely time you two are having. I've been following Rick on his page, enjoying " the ride" with him 😊. Have been crafting this month with step daughter in law,; we were going to do a few acrylic canvases yesterday but she was under the weather. Going to be cute folk art style, 1 a cute Halloween scene we bith ate making for eac of us, a lamb for me and an adorable froggy for her - she asked me to help her learn to work with acrylics. I work in oils too but she said she was so jit ready for that level yet 😏. Enjoy yourself. I spent my mini staycation putting out my autumn decor. Got a little teary thinking of my Mike- he gave me several of items l use and got a bit weepy when l unpacked those items. Really can't believe it is soon going to be his 1 year angelversary. Anyways, glad you are getting better & enjoying great company!!! Dawn P. Albany, GA
A lovely catch-up post.
Your paintings looks lovely and nice that you could get some walks in too.
Wasn't that great that Rick was able to meet up with Jenn and Joe.
As I type this it's the 31st of August!
Yikes where has this month gone!?
Early good wishes for the new month of September.
All the best Jan
I enjoyed all your paintings and I'm so glad to hear about the wonderful Canadian hospitality being extended to Rick. I hope he experiences more of it while he journeys through Ottawa and the eastern provinces.
I did not realize how far Rick planned to bike! What an adventure! It reminds me of what my friend Kyria did last summer. She started in California, made it to Banff then did a bike race down to New Mexico. Then she took an Amtrak to Chicago, biked to Minneapolis and headed north from here. She ended her journey in Nova Scotia in the fall.
We have had unseasonably cool weather here, too. Our highs will be in the 60s this week! The boys still swam at my parents. I watched from the dock in a sweatshirt one day!! I am a wimp and am quick to put on a sweatshirt, though. They were happy as clams.
I am glad the course of meds is behind you. I hope you get more energy back. Those strong drugs really do a number on a person!!
It looks like you have been making the most of art camp, whether warm and sunny, or weirdly autumnal. I'm so impressed by your iterations on the fox, and how each one gets at something of the original photograph, but differently. And I love the mug. And the sandhill crane. And the entire series from the Sketchbook Scavenger Hunt.
So glad to hear that you're finished with the meds and hopefully feeling more like yourself very soon. And especially glad to hear about the generous support he's received while on the road -- bloggers are the best!
What joy to spend time painting with a friend. I really like your sandhill crane.
It has turned quite chilly here too, but itbeen a relief after being hot for months. I love it.
I've been following Rick's adventures on Facebook. What a time he has had!
I can see why you love painting at the lake. Such a lovey view from the porch and close enough to the lake to hear the water lapping on the shore. I think you are doing wonderfuly painting. You'll have lovey cards for your Christmas sale. The fox is my favorite. Sorry the weather turned cold, that's always a disappointment. Hope Rick has finished up and safely back from his trip. Where did August go! Happy September and glad you are much better.
Your last crane painting was the best. I agree that the photo you were working from didn't show the bird's colors particularly well. You produced a first painting that looked quite like the photo, if not quite like the bird! And I loved the painting of the mug. It reminded me immediately of a slightly wonky vase I made in a grade school class; it had the same slighty canted lip at the top.
I'm glad Rick managed to make it this far on his trip without any serious mishaps, even if the weather and etc. wasn't particularly enjoyable. That stopover with Jenn and Joe must have felt like heaven!
So sorry for Ricks misadventures...but glad he was able to stay with a blog buddy. I like the fox on the left more and do like your sandhill crane one. We had a double rainbow last week and I missed it, but some of my neighbors captured it over the river. So amazing nature is. Janice
So happy to see your lake and your cottage, and your art!
Thanks for the shout out. We were happy to provide some humble lodging in Lanark County!
I'm happy you are feeling better. Hugs, Jenn & Joe!
I love seeing art camp! I want to attend with my stitching. How nice that your blog friends were able to help out Rick. Lizzie is so sweet. I can almost hear her purr.
Love how your 'art camp' lives on year after year. What a wonderful way to end summers at the lake. Your second fox is fabulous and is your sandhill crane.
I love your paint camp that you have every year! What fun!
And I love that story about Rick and Jenn. That is some trail magic there. :)
Your sandhill crane looks fantastic. I tried to paint with watercolor the other day, and it is um.. not great. Lol. But it was fun to do.
Thanks for sharing all your artwork. It is truly a joy to look at. The crane looks grand in that painting and you did a great job on the fox too. What a beautiful view of the lake- no wonder you are so happy there. The idea of a yearly art camp is so perfect. Sounds like Rick is on quite an adventure. Enjoy.
I guess the crane is my favorite. So glad you enjoyed art camp, sounded fun and you were productive. Nice that friends helped Rick.
I love your adventures from art camp. You are so talented. I love it.
Your paintings are all beautiful. I think my favorite is the feather, so much detail. Glad your hubby is finding love on a somewhat difficult bike ride!
I especially enjoy your fox paintings, and seeing the different iterations -- that seems like a really satisfying project. But mostly, I just admire so much your painting generally. I'm glad you can do it even if you are tired physically.
The painting of the fireplace is my favorite. It looks so cozy!
I love how you shared both the art process and the ups and downs of life at the lake. The crane card so pretty even if you weren’t fully happy with it. Do you think painting feels different on cold days compared to the warm ones?
What a great post Jeanie. A beautiful day of light (although cold too) on your patio enjoying painting. So glad Rick is making progress on his bike trip and making friends along the way. Hoping you have more sunshine days this late summer than cold weather or rain.
what a GREAT post, one i really enjoyed. it was so fun to see so much of your art...i like we were suppose to pick a favorite fox but i really couldn't, i thought they were all so well done!! the flowers on your art table look exactly like the ones on my desk!! i guess rick has had quite the time of it, i am going to go back on your posts, i think i have missed some!! have a great week and remember, your art is lovely!!
There is something about your post today dear Jeanie that made me feel like home. WIshing all the best for Rick and his adventures and so as you dear Jeanie!
What a lovely post. Everyone did a great job with the art and how fun? Always nice to have friends over for a meal. Sorry Rick had a rough bike ride. I love Schitt's Creek. That would have been a nice stay I think. Thank you for sharing all the lake activities.
Rainy days make for a grand sunset. The sunset photo is brilliant, Jeanie. Love that one. You've done a lot of art lately, and it all looks wonderful. I especially like the FOX. And I think the first one looks more like a fox - his brown color, and the white on his face stands out more. The eyes are more like a fox as well. The neighborhood walk is lovely with the purple bush. Lizzie looks all comfy rolled up and ready for a nap.
Happy September Jeanie! It's such a pleasant month, isn't it?
~Sheri
An art station on the porch overlooking the lake is my idea of heaven.

Jeanie, I am so happy you have completed the meds and hope you will feel better soon. Art camp looks like so much fun especially on the porch by the lake. I know you were happy that Rick had a respite with your blogging friend
and was treated royally. Happy September!
Hello jeanie, thanks for sharing all of your recent artwork as it appears you have been very productive. I especially enjoyed the Sketchbook Scavenger Hunt images. Nice to have visits from friends and glad to read that Rick's travels included the hospitality of blogger friends.
It's nice that you have a painting partner to share your time with. Sounds like fun. Rick is really putting in the miles on his adventure. Wish him a safe trip and return.
I love the foxes and the Sandhill Crane!
Your paintings are beautiful! What a gorgeous rainbow sky. We had a cooler than usual August too and I keep waiting for it to warm up again but it hasn't happened yet. Glad to hear an update on Rick; I didn't realize how far he was biking!
