The Cork Poppers, our wine tasting group, celebrated the holidays by making plans to survive the political chaos of 2025 and beyond with the theme of "Wines to Get Us Through." Judging by the tastings, we will at least be somewhat festive, if numb.
Our hosts were Kate and Mike, who greeted us with our favorite Mionetto Prosecco. Then it was onto the whites, beginning with Cheryl's Pinot Grigio, appropriately named "Italian Christmas White." Cheryl admitted she bought it for the label but also said she liked it. And, given that this was the first wine of the afternoon, Barb declared it "my favorite so far." Cheryl said it was about $15.
Roger was up next with Le Pianure Pinot Grigio DOC. "This is so different, buttery," Cheryl noted, "and not so tart as the first." She decided she liked the first best.
But Clayton said, "Tasty! One of the best you've ever brought -- ever!" Mike gave it a "Barely survivable rating for four years" (not in terms of the age of the wine, but in terms of making it through four years and if this would help us survive.) Rick said "For $12.99, it's not too bad," and Cheryl was holding firm. "There's nothing NOT to like about this wine, but to me it's not fantastic."
Kate was next with a Pavette Pinot Noir. I found it very pleasant, peppery and spicy. Kate said, "This is how I got through the election and will make it the next four years!" She also said, "I used to hate Pinot Noir because it was watery. But this is different. It's not watery." (Rick and I agreed, and Anne said, "I am liking the Pinots more and more.")
Rick was next with Curator, a South African Wine. He said it was a South African you could enjoy in spite of Elon Musk. (For those who don't know, Musk was born and raised in South Africa.)
This red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage grapes and it had a rich and full flavor. When asked for a show of hands on "who likes this one," Clayton, Kate, Barb, Anne, Suzanne, Rick, Roger and Jeanie said "Yes!"
Suzanne was next with "Tenacity," a 2022 Shiraz from the Barocca Valley in Southern Australia. We all agreed that we will need tenacity to make it through four years. Meredith said Suzanne "won for presentation and Roger was all for "anything that takes you out of reality." Roger and I both really liked this and Roger and Dick agreed that it had a deeper, more robust flavor and stronger taste.
Then Barb stepped up with a Chianti Classico Basilica Cafaggio Vendemmia 2021, an Italian wine. "When I heard our theme was wine to get through the next four years, I thought that what we need is a robust wine that'll stain your teeth and stick to your ribs!
She explained that it is a "black rooster" wine, a traditional "rating" of sorts. In medieval times, Florence and Siena had a rivalry about their grapes. People from Florence were represented by a black rooster (Florence won the contest.) "I want something I can drink by myself with good cheese and some bread," one of our members said. For $10 at Costco, you cannot go wrong with this one.
Bob was next with another Pinot Noir, this one from Dreaming Tree, owned by musician Dave Matthews. Bob said that there is a different wine master now than there was in earlier times, before the 2022 vintage and he much preferred the earlier years. "It's a different wine now. Try to find a 2020," Bob said. (He brought a 2020.)
I noted "This is pleasant;" Mike S. said "I like it" and Mike M. said "This pairs well with cheese dogs." Roger decided "I like Tenacity better, This is less pungent, weaker," but Kate thought it was "very nice."
Our final wine was from Anne and Clayton, Chateau Haut-Landon 2022, a Bordeaux Superieur by Michelle Brimaud. "OMG! This is awesome!" I exclaimed after the first taste. Anne noted you could taste the oak and cherry and it had nice, dry tannins. Rick said, "It's like 1997 again -- good wine for not a lot of money." (I can't remember the price on this but I have $7.50 in my notes. I can't believe that would be right, but I think Clayton said it was four bottles for $30.) Best buy of the day.
Throughout the day we were snacking from the array of foods on the table. Sloppy Joe sliders from Barb were the main protein, with a wonderful pasta salad from Meredith. Anne brought her Christmas cheese ball, which went perfectly with Rick's baguettes, and there were plenty of finger foods -- tasty meats from Bob, veggies from Cheryl and Dick, and more. For dessert, we had baklava and Nanaimo bars, straight from Canada!
We hung out for a long while after, talking, which was nice. But it was time to let Kate and Mike chill out! We took our lovely take-away gifts (the beautiful amaryllis plants on Kate's mantel here) and headed out.
Rick, Suzanne and I took a quick jaunt through the park to see their light display.
My photos are grim. There was some discussion as to why the window was down (for a better view, of course, despite the cold) and we kept moving so there were a lot of blurs. But it was a much nicer display than you see here! And, a fun way to celebrate.
Now,, all we have to do is survive the holidays -- and the next four years!

Good chuckle reading this. You can all move to South Australia for 4 years and enjoy the wine. I’m in Melbourne. Happy New Year. Rita
I think you'll need to plan many many parties to make it through.
Hello Jeanie,
I always enjoy your Cork Popper posts. I have looked for some of the wines you have mentioned, some are hard to find in the stores near me. I did try my first Pinot Noir on Thanksgiving, my husband's cousin brought us a bottle of Sea Sun Pinot Noir bottle, it was good. I do like the reds. Take care, enjoy these last days of 2024. I wish you and yours all the best in 2025, a happy and healthy New Year.
You all have the most fun. Looks like a great and delicious time.

...I'm teetotaler, but I found some the wine labels graphicly interesting. The amaryllis on the that huge mantel captured my eye. I wish you a Healthy and Happy New Year.
I love your plans to survive the next 4 yrs --and unfortunately, maybe more!!-- Personally, I was gifted a big bottle of Jack Daniels and plan to work my way through it --hard times call for hard liquor.
hugs, Julierose
I guess this goes to prove that the quality of the wine depends to a great extent on the tongue of the taster! Great fun trying it all.
I just left a comment, but I’m not sure it went through. I’ll check back later and if not I’ll try again.
Have a great new year ✨️
wish I had had this information before I bought wine for Christmas - I do not know wine so i bought shite! Your group is lovely- I want to marry you all and drink wine with you and sing. I live too far away for that, so you can relax, I will not be crashing your parties.
Love your idea of wines to survive the next 4 years, unfortunately we will get to hear and suffer the madness nearly as much as you - so I'm now wishing I could drink alcohol and sleep drunk and happy until 2028!
My favorite label is the Pavette one!! So pretty! I would have liked most of the whites except the buttery Pinot Grigio. I do NOT like buttery whites at all which is why I cannot drink Chardonnay as many are buttery. Bleh. Sounds like a very fun time, though! We will need a lot to get through the next 4 years...
What a fun group and an excellent time. I had to quit drinking wine, even though I love it. Lupus, migraines and wine just don't mix. Have a drink for me next time.
Your survival plan is off to a great start! Some of those labels are quite cool, particularly the Italian Christmas White. It would be great to save that bottle for seasonal decor with some silk flowers. I love light shows like that, we have a wonderful one here too.
You guys always have such a fun time! Loved your commentary about the evening and the parting gifts--what a sweet surprise! :)
That sounds like quite a memorable tasting experience! I love how Suzanne's "Tenacity" Shiraz served as a metaphor for the perseverance needed to get through challenging times. It's great to hear that the wine made such an impression with its deep, robust flavor and strong taste
I always enjoy your Cork Popper post's you all have such fun and it's nice to know your thoughts on the different wines.
Raising a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and saying cheers and happy new year wishes.
All the best Jan
So many memories. Pino Grigio is my favorite. Reds make my head hurt.
This sounds like such fun! I have quit drinking except for the occasional glass when we go out, in an attempt to encourage my hubby to quit too (he really needs to for his health). I sure miss it, but maybe I could find enough like-minded souls to do one of these tastings!
What a fun and enjoyable post, Jeanie. The cork poppers will survive and thrive during the next 4 years because you all know how to enjoy yourselves and have fun. Wishing you the best in 2025 with lots of fun happy times and good health.
I always enjoy reading about your wine taster friends. Happy New Year and I'm looking forward to more adventures with you in 2025.
I think we might all be drinking a lot more wine (or other drinks) in the next 4 years. But you look like you were having so much fun. And now you have good chocied to stock up on. I like all the labels too; this time you had some beautiful ones like Curator and Pavette. I hope you have a great start to 2025 Jeanie. hugs-Erika
I love the theme! I hope we make it through the next four years.
"Wines that get us through" - I'm in! We get our white wine from the winemaker near our region... and we like to buy red wine from the winemakers in France... or Italy - depending on where we're on holiday. And otherwise we like to try any good wine... ha, I would have felt good...
Happy greetings to you.
Happy New Year. Best wishes 2025.
Sounds like a fun group. Love all the labels.
Happy New Year! See ya in 2025!
Wines to get us thru, what a clever idea. I used to Host Wine and Cheese Parties a long time ago. I don't drink, due to my Dad's Ancestry not handling the Fire Waters well *winks*, but, a nice glass of Moscato is sometimes appreciated. I Love the one from Olive Garden, but it's about $25 a Bottle, so, I usually only have a complimentary Tasting when they're offering it. *Ha ha ha* If I went thru all of those Wines I think my ability to Judge would have been seriously compromised. *LOL* But, if 2025 play out like I suspect it will, I may have to start drinking? *Smiles*
I would have bought that wine for the label too:):): happy New Year:)
Some of these sound delicious! Happy New Years, Jeanie 🍾🎉
Oh Jeanie, I'm always so green with envy when you share Cork Poppers evenings. Y'all look like you are having so much fun and how I would love to join you and this group! I am loving the Italian white and I would have that bottle in my bottle in my cart so fast, not only for the wine but that label! Raising my glass and whatever is in it tonight to you and Rick and all your friends, Happy New Year!!!
Totally love this idea...for me, I'm allergic to wines/sulffites they add for stability ....sadly. I think I drank my life's quota before I was 35 ...when the allergy kicked in. Anyway---maybe a gallon a week of rum will help survive the next four years...HA!
What a hoot! Even better: What a great crew of friends! Sounds to me like getting together more frequently might be all you need to make it through the next four years...
I think it will take a lot of wine to get us through the next four years. Hoping for the best!
Sounds like you had a great time! Best wishes for 2025! Happy New Year!
Happy New Year✨
You have such fine friends! My SIL did a wine tasting. Such fun.
