Happy New Year to you! It's a good time to look back, especially since I'm not that keen on looking forward! Some years are more stellar than others. This one definitely had its highs. But it had its lows, too. We'll start with the "highs," and one of them was spending time with these two!
And one terrific high of the year was our trip to England. I'm doing loads of posts on that, as you know (archiving them on the menu tab at the top of the page here). They'll continue well into 2025 -- my form of escapism and hopefully, yours too!
Also on the travel list this year were trips to Stratford (Ontario), Toledo, Ohio (to view the eclipse), and another to Minneapolis. (More on that below.)
We spent some good times at the lake, including two weeks of art camp with friend Kate. We also saw lots of family and friends. Cousins came to the lake, too, and that's always fun. When we were kids, we spent every summer together, so those times now are like "coming home."
Our special guests were fun too!
Spending summers at the lake is something I treasure, something I have enjoyed since I was a child, and times enjoyed by my mom since she, too, was a child. There is nothing lovelier than sitting on the porch, watching one of our beautiful sunsets, on a warm summer night. Oh, I love those long days and can't wait for them to begin again!
I completed my family history book and distributed it to the cousins. This was a massive project, taking about six years with research and writing and I was thrilled with the final outcome.
The grands continue to grow, this year celebrating their sixth and seventh birthdays. We enjoyed partying with them and other good times!
Rick hosted another house concert, this time for his guitar teacher. It's joyful, bringing music to our friends in his home. The next one is scheduled for later this month -- January 12. If you are in the mid-Michigan area and would enjoy a lovely afternoon of harp, followed by tasty snacks and wine, let me know. (No charge, but donations to the musician are always appreciated.)
As for the downside, I've dealt with four MRSA infections, which means pretty yucky medicine, but hey -- you do what it takes. And then there was the cataract surgery, which could go in either the good or bad pile! It took awhile for my eyes to resettle after but all's well now.
We did have final farewells to a number of people, both friends and family. That trip to Minneapolis brought the Oberle family together to celebrate the life of Rick's Aunt Beth. She was a big part in his life and an inspiring woman who will be missed. Here's Rick with Beth and with three of his brothers in Minneapolis.
In addition to Beth, there were several other final farewells that
made an impact on our lives. Rick, especially, mourned his friend George
Christiansen, aka George the Cyclist, a magnificent blogger and travel writer and one of his cycling inspirations.
Former colleagues and friends have also moved onto a new place in the
universe. They will be missed.
And we continue to especially miss Charlie the Dog. Kevin brought Charlie into our lives back about twelve years ago. He was the puppy that should have died within days of his arrival in our lives from the Parvo virus. But good vet care and a lot of love kept him with us and he was a wonderful dog and friend.
We brought back an uninvited guest from Minneapolis. Bedbugs. All's well now, thanks to a good bugman and more trips to the laundromat than I can count. It was a good opportunity to downsize.
So, too, was the mold issue back last winter. That was a super-downsizing event and one that was both pretty massive and expensive. But sometimes things have to get really bad before they get better! There are still a few things that need to be carted up from the basement but right now, all is pretty well settled.
We watched our national and international events worsen day by day and I'm quite certain that is bound to continue into the new year. The situation around the world is none too cheery, either, which is why I have two words of the year -- "Survive" and "Escape." By "survive," In both cases, I mean to survive and escape in all possible ways, physical and mental.
I know that these national and world situations, along with the challenges of living with a chronic disease, contribute to periods of emotional darkness. But I also know that I am far from the only person in the world to be contending with such things. Many of you blog friends live with such challenges daily and I am continually inspired by how you face up to those challenges, do what you can to make things better, and continue to lead rich and full lives.
I am grateful that you share the tough times as well as the good, for together we learn and grow. It has been a tough year for many in blogland and I admire your fortitude and send all good wishes for the new year. Meanwhile. . .
Keep looking up!

You had a good year (by and large) in 2024 and I hope that 2025 will be a great one for you too, Jeanie. Best wishes to you and Rick.
Happy New Year Jeanie. I think every year is filled with good and bad, and it sounds like you've coped with them which is the most important thing. 2025 will definitely have its trials. I wish I was one of those people who could just focus completely on my own life, but I'm not, but I'm going to try to not let the world situation get to me. Will that happen? I write that because I hope that we'll all stick together to get through what we must. (Scary stuff for sure). I love how you ended your poster with Rick looking up. Cheers to 2024. And I wish you a happy and healthy and no bed bugs 2025 too. And that goes for Rick and the Grands and everyone else in your life too. hugs-Erika

You track and not things well. My life is a blur to me. Happy New Year. Will there be more travels?
Happy New Year, Jeanie! I hope this is the year that we will finally meet in person!
Your year had a lot of peaks and valleys. You saw some amazing sites but dealing with a chronic illness is the pits. And then add in bed bugs and oof! That’s a lot.
I worry about what the new year brings politically. Part of me follows the headlines, part of me wants to put my head under a pillow.
Great blog
...may 2025 be a wonderful year for you and your family. Hopefully mold is now in your rearview mirror. Be happy and well.
Hello Jeanie
Your past year looks great to me, a few unhappy moments.
I try to remain positive and hopeful for the new year.
I loved all your photos from 2024, happy times and you made some great new memories. Happy New Year, I wish you and yours all the best in 2025!
Yes, it has been quite the year. Grandsons are definitely my delight, too. So very glad to have met you, as you are an inspiration to me. I, also, plan to survive and escape in the coming year. I wish you good health, days filled with joy, and that 2025 will be better than excepted. :)
Happy LOOKING UP post!
Sometimes I wonder, “what should I do”
and my answer is LOOK UP!
Happy 2025 Jeanie . . .
You had quite the year. I hope 2025 treats you well.
So many negative things happened but somewhat offset by the positive. Keep going! Happy New Year to you and the family!
Happy 2025, Jeanie and family! Lovely and heartfelt post. I know that the grand boys bring so much joy to your lives. We have to keep those joys close at heart and each of us work to make the world a better place!
Hi Jeanie, you've certainly had a very busy year with some big challenges health wise and home wise. You're an inspiration in how you deal with everything with grace and joy. The photo (#1) of you and Rick with the grandchildren is a beautiful one. Wishing you a very Happy New Year in 2025 and all the joy one can find despite all the current challenges. xx
Have a great New Year … I hope your health challenges are all small and diminishing! And that your (and my and everyone’s) fears for our nation turn out to be exaggerated. Good travels, and yes, I hope we soon get together.
best… mae at maefood.blogspot.com
Jeanie, you've had a full year for sure! I've said before, I lived vicariously thru you on your fabulous trip to England. That has been my dream for years. Health and home repairs can be such a drain. But you managed to come thru. take care, wishing you a very Happy New Year.
Have a great new year, Jeanie. All the best to you and Rick.
Happy New Year!
I never choose one or more words for the New Year, but if I did "Survive" and "Escape" sound the best to me that I have heard so far for this year. I can so relate to that whole paragraph.

Such a great lookback on 2024 Jeanie. You have risen to the challenge to face the good and the not so good. Happiness to you in 2025!
We never know what is down life's path as we start each year, but we each have to deal with/cope with whatever crosses our path.
Through good times and bad times, being pleased to have wonderful memories yet continue to make more... and the older I get it's so often the simple pleasures of life that I treasure.
Many thanks for your blogging friendship this past year.
I always enjoy my visits to see what you've been up to, and this look back you've posted I have enjoyed reading :)
Sending good wishes across the miles.
All the best Jan

The past year seemed to pass more quickly than most; it still startles me that we're in 2025. That's a quarter of a century! I hope the good outweighs the bad for you in this new year, and that all the surprises are good ones!

Looks like you had a good year, Jeanie. Some ups and downs, like all of us, but so many special moments. I love seeing the sunsets over the lake, and look at the pinks and purples of this lovely evening!! I'm looking forward to seeing more of your pictures there this Summer. It's such a peaceful place during the Summer months. The biggest chore for you was organizing your basement. Looks like so much work, but you got it done, good for you! Here's to good days in 2025, dear Jeanie.

Happy New Year Jeanie. You are all beaming in the photo with those two adorable boys! Hope this is a wonderful year for you.
Glad your eye surgery went well
Hello Jeanie :)
Lovely post, sharing the ups and downs of 2024, but mainly the happy times shared with friends and especially your granadis, holidays spent at the lake, and your trip to England which I haven't seen yet because of the two months I was away from blogging due to my computer issues. I will remedy this shortly and go look for some posts about your stay in England That first photo is absolutely lovely. You always have a brilliant smile Jeanie, but everyone looks so happy, and wide smiles from Rick and both boys makes this a very special photo and a lovely memory.. I almost forgot the book you finished about your family history, well done Jeanie it was quite an achievement I wish I knew more about mine..
I wish you every Happiness for this new year in good health and also for all the ones you love.
Al the best
