Halloween -- Costumes of the Past

Pam did a fun post recently about her past Halloween costumes. I don't have as many as she did, but I did have fun going through the archives and finding a few. This one was from the early days!

My friend Nancy found the pictures when going through things from her mom. She was my first friend and close to 70 years later, we still are!

Of course, it wasn't my first Halloween photo. My mom had an interesting sense of humor. I inherited that!

She made my costumes when I was a kid. I don't have photos of a lot of them, but I remember they were always fun.

Time passes. My friend Jerry and I dressed as a bag full of jelly beans and the great pumpkin for Halloween back for a college party in 1972!

Flash forward many moons. When you hang out with theatre people, you have to up your costuming game! Come as a favorite film/theatre person found me as Harpo Marx. I've rarely been quiet that long!

This photo is from a presentation to children on dental health during my time working in a dental clinic. I later wore the same garb for Halloween. Yes, that's my real hair. (And it's getting to look like that again if I don't get it cut soon!)

Then there was the flapper. This might be from a mystery party but I liked that costume. I could never wear it now!

You can't work for public television and not get into the product! I enjoyed Kermit -- for a while. But that head was heavy!

And the last time I dressed for Halloween, it was as Maleficent.

That was then. These days it's just a good thing to be able to pull together passing out the candy on Halloween night!

And there's nothing wrong with that -- or borrowed bat wings --  either!

I have never dressed for Halloween, either as a child or as an adult, so that takes care of that!

I feel deprived. I only have one photo of me in a costume and that was for a school play. Thanks for sharing yours. Love the flapper outfit.

Oh, you are such fun! When I look at that little plastic pumpkin you carried to put your treats in, I am reminded of how things have changed with trick or treating. Now kids carry gigantic bags (my own carried around pillow cases and that was just in our little village!)in which to collect their goodies. Please tell me what mask you were wearing as an infant. It is a little hard to tell in the picture. -Jenn

When I worked in community theatre, we used to do a Haunted Walk every year. It was great fun to dress up as all kinds of scary entities. I remember one year having big safety pins in my pierced ears and wild long hair all over the place. It was scary all right! Never did see any photos of my characters but they were taken.

I enjoyed going down memory lane with your Halloween costumes. How fun it was as a kid when we went out more than the two hour time frame that towns do now. That pumpkin basket is worth lots of money now. Hopefully they still have it. Happy Halloween and hope your day is spooktacular! Janice

You look like you really enjoy dressing up and having fun. Thanks for sharing these. This was such a joyful post to read. Have a great start to your weekend. Hugs-Erika

We're too rural for kids, but my hallowe'en days are done! Three kids and 25 years teaching!

Such a great photo collection of your past Halloween costumes. We always enjoy the few neighborhood children who dress up and come knocking. I love to see the creativity of the costumes now, not so many store bought. Happy Halloween Jeanie........

Well, we will all be wearing masks for this Halloween (unless we are going as a pro-Covid Republican). I guess I prefer the old kind of mask that covers the top of one’s face.

How wonderful to see you in Halloween costumes, dear Jeanie. I know you love the event and I am sure you will make the children happy no matter what you do this year. I think you have a great deal of former Halloweens to share and I enjoyed all the photos from years past.

Great collection of your past Halloweens. Halloween is a recent thing for me, we never had it in the countries I grew up in, and in Australia it's a recent event too.

Happy Halloween! I hope the tradition of dressing up never gets lost as it's so much fun - I look forward to seeing what the children around here are wearing when they knock on the door - my kids always loved it... I give some things to the little girl next door so she can use her imagination and join in.

Despite all my wonderful childhood memories, I can't remember a single Halloween costume, and don't have a single photo of a costumed 'me.' I suppose I did dress up -- memories of the smell of those old paper masks haunt me -- but ask me about the candy I got. That, I remember! Well, and our school parties. Orange and black crepe paper, pumpkin carving, and cupcakes!

Fun pics and ohhhhhhhh... do you look sexy in that red dress! And your smile tops it all!

All pics are great fun - I wish you a Happy Halloween!

My mom didn't sew costumes. I remember her making me up as a gypsy several times - involved lots of her junk jewelry. Halloween was fun and not as scary as today.

Jeanie, it was great fun seeing your Halloween costumes from childhood to adulthood and who says we need to grow up anyway? My brother and I did wear costumes but sadly there were never any photos taken.

Fun to see your costumes. Now, I am thinking of some of my costumes as a child but don't know if I have any pictures. I certainly remember one of my teachers opening the door and holding a huge tray of caramel apples! I was so impressed! I lived in a small town and you knew most everyone. It was fun to trick or treat at your teacher's houses.

Hi Jeanie. Love all your costumes especially your flapper dress. You looked stunning in it. My mom dressed my friend, Janet, and me up as Christmas packages. We won first prize in the Halloween parade. The two of us are still best friends. Those of many years are so special.
