Meet the Duckles

Another day at the Ditch. And look what we found!

The Duckle family. There may be two Duckle families. I suppose it's like Smith and Jones. Lots of them in the city directory. When I first encountered this family, they were having breakfast.

Then a swimming lesson. Mom's a good teach and she keeps her eye on them.

But all that swimming can wear a duck out! So, time to chill.

I love how these babies bunch close together, even though the weather was in the 80s during this visit.

It's quite the flock and helps make up for the goslings who have since departed to grassier areas (aka the golf course, which I'm sure is a big hit with the golfers.

A first they were several feet from Mama Duck, content to be in their clump.

But a loud noise sent them scurrying closer to mom. All was well.

We'll be seeing this family again.

So till then, keep cool!

Please check out my post at Summer Love Notes where I am sharing some stories of those Halcyon Days of summer, back when responsibilities were few, fun was under ever rock and days were spent with cousins on the water -- without social media! You can find that essay HERE!

Jeanie, I loved seeing the ducks. All those soft striped heads are so cute. I would have loved hearing them too. We have had lots of baby birds cheeping around here. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

Our babies here are slowly disappearing -- because they're growing up, and aren't babies any more! They truly are darling when they're babies, but I confess I enjoy the teenagers. The best ones ever are our black-bellied whistling ducks. Those teens are big, and awkward, and have real attitude. I'm hoping to find a group of them this year to photograph. They're especially funny before they grow into their really big feet!

Aww, the ducks are so cute. I used to go to the park to feed the birds, but I avoided the parks this year, with the pandemic. I think I should go and see, maybe is not too busy.
Love all the photos. xx

The duckling families are so cute. I read your halcyon days essay and enjoyed it. We didn't have holiday homes by a lake but we had a lot of fun in the gardens or over the fields building dens and playing all sorts of imaginative games. My first holiday was aged 10 with the family in a caravan at the seaside a couple of hours away by coach. To us it was so exciting. We were always outside with our friends or in bad weather reading, playing monopoly or some sort of crafts. No screens in sight.

We never did see any baby ducks at our creek or lake! The moms must have gone elsewhere to nest and have their babies. I was hoping to see babies as paul would have been thrilled. Maybe next year!!
