On one of my recent visits, I noticed even more geese nesting.
This makes about three I've seen -- and there might be more; it's sometimes hard to tell!
This was the newest.
This duck duo intrigued me too. Usually when they are just sitting, all the feathers are tucked under -- look at the male, whose back is to us. But the female seems to have her tail feathers out.
I'd never seen that before. I thought she might be getting ready to take off or get int he water, but no, she just stood there, like a statue.
Harry was back and I was able to get a couple of good sequence shots of him fishing. Here's the first sequence. Both of the following sets are in order and they require little (if any) explanation!
In this sequence, watch how Harry gets the fish, tries to "work" it into his mouth, loses it and gets it again -- in mid-air -- then down the hatch!
I am continually in awe.

Those are amazing sequence pictures, Jeanie. I love that you were able to capture all that. ALL the pictures are great. My son has geese nesting in the ditch by his house (a yearly event) and after the babies are born (every year) they bring them into my son's yard to eat and take them down to the lake...and then one day--the babies come by themselves and go right down to the lake. This has happened for several years now.

Wow!!!! You go, Harry!! It seems amazing to me, but he's just doing what he is meant to be doing. I'm glad for him that he has found such a nice, abundant home. And glad to see your experience with these birds!! Nature photography is one of your talents, I see.

I noticed small buds today on a bush and a tree: for the first time this year....It's not warm here in Maine, but it is not winter air!
Great shots of Harry! How fun to watch him fishing. I wonder if that is how the ducks dry off their feathers? Big birds stretch out their wings to dry but maybe that is too hard for the ducks to do. I have never seen a duck puffed up like that either. She is beautiful. It looks like you will be seeing baby geese swimming soon!

Great series, Jeanie. Harry is obviously a very proficient hunter. I love to see the nests of Canada Geese, but it is kind of sad to see what looks like plastic as part of their nest.

Unlike others, my favorite shot was the cardinal. It always saddens me when I see death right in front of me, but of course, I know it's how nature survives. At least your photos are stunning and beyond gorgeous.

Have you read "Where the Crawdads Sing"? As a lover of nature, I think you'd love this book. The author did a lot of nature writing, I think about birds, before writing this novel and you can tell as her description of the landscape and wildlife are really beautiful. It really adds to the book as the setting (a coast marsh) is a very important aspect of the book. I have about 50 pages left and had the hardest time putting it down last night!

What a TERRIFIC sequence of Harry! You should enter it into a competition. What a lovely place to have so near you, (as I've said before) perhaps I should clarify that to explain that it's the idea of going down and seeing all these creatures going on quietly with their little lives. They don't need us around at all, do they? In fact they might wonder what we are :)

However, I must admit, I'm not very happy to see the stronger (the duck) devouring the weaker (the tiny fish).
That Harry's quite a fisherbird, isn't he? Our green herons are back now, and it's great fun to watch them, too. They like to perch on lines at the marinas, so I get good views of their patience. I keep saying I'm going to take my camera to work with me, but I also know the kinds of risk that could be involved -- not to mention how distracting it could be. Probably what I need to do is not come home for lunch, but take it with me, and dedicate a half-hour every day.
Have you ever seen Harry taking a bath? I watched a great blue do that the other day, and it was hilarious.
