Princess Summerfall Winterspring

Our schizophrenic weather brought to mind a character from an old children's television show I watched as a child,  "The Howdy Doody Show." Princess Summerfall Winterspring was first played by actress Judy Tyler, then after her early death, by a marionette.  The character was one of Howdy's dear friends.

Summerfall Winterspring. That's what March is like in Michigan. When the temperature hits 60, drive by any fraternity house near the campus that has a sun roof and you'll see loads of young men in shorts. As for the women, on their way to the bar on a Friday night, tube tops and short skirts are in vogue -- often with no coat or a skimpy jacket. It is summer to them.

And then it will snow. Or we'll have freezing rain. The skies will be gray, gloomy and threatening. And if you venture to the north of the state, that snow might well be there till the end of April. Winter. (All these photos were taken in previous March years.)

And then, March brings us this. Shoots of daffodils, crocus and dwarf iris. Maybe even a bud on a tree toward the end of the month.

And lots of rain.  Spring.

In fact, this is my neighbor's yard, taken this weekend. I would have taken a pic of my basement with two inches of water covering the entire floor (which is far worse than usual), but it was too depressing. Most went down the storm drain by morning -- after attempting bail, I went to bed. (Though I had to sweep some toward it) and drying out with fans. Ick.

There isn't much fall in this scenario, apart from the still-bare branches that take hold in November and remain until that beautiful, wispy chartreuse of early spring takes hold. Yes, that's Fall. (And yes, we've had snow like that in fall, too.)

This year the Ditch is just opening up, ice is almost out. On a warm, cloudy day, threatening more rain, I headed that way.

I saw this cute little fellow swimming on my walk, along with a lot of ducks and geese. There was even a red-winged blackbird but he was too fast for me to photograph!

These two were especially decked out!

This year, it seems like everyone has talked about the weather. It's either been terribly cold (most places in the north), very snowy (like the recent Nor'easter); or not (like in Colorado). Some of you are having loads of flowers (London), some are having summer (Australia). And some of us are lucky enough to have orchids in their house!

One thing that helps moves winter into spring is time with friends. Recently, my friend Barb, Hostest with the Mostest, invited Kate and me for lunch to celebrate Kate's birthday.

If you want to see spring at its floral best, Barb is the person to visit. She made the basket for this wonderful spring floral arrangement! Which, of course, she designed with an array of blooms.

We started with mango mimosa.

And then it was on to lunch. The first course was a wonderful veggie soup -- split peas, onion, carrot, and potato, ultimately blended to a rich, hearty soup and topped with a bit of balsamic glaze. Yum!

And, to accompany that, home made muffins. (And best of all, she gave us both soup and muffins to take home!)

Onward to the glorious Maurice Salad. The one-time major Detroit department store, Hudson's, used to feature this in their dining room. Barb rocked it!

So far, it had been a pretty healthy lunch -- veggies, soup, bran muffins. We were stuffed after this but it didn't stop us from enjoying dessert!

Let me just say, my friend Barb makes the best key lime pie ever. She'd win any contest around!

And of course, we were all very happy!

That should make for plenty of fun and festive times! But it wasn't enough for me! So, later in the week, I welcomed my friends Susie and Jane for our monthly lunch.

I was a slacker, doing a Trader Joe stir fry (which was darned good!), while Jane brought cole slaw and Susie brought ice cream and cookies for dessert. But Jane  brought something else -- a sweet potato tightly wrapped in plastic. She was told to microwave it for four minutes, and when you cut it open it would explode into fluffiness. It didn't explode (maybe a good thing!) but it was delicious!

Meanwhile, I received a lovely surprise package from a dear friend. But I think Lizzie was most surprised of all.

It was good to see my girl play again! Maybe she has spring fever too!

We're having quite the variable weather for spring, too. My neighbor has some daffodils. Mine are planted on the north side of the house so they take a bit later to pop.

Thank you for the lovely note, I am doing so much better. I feel awful about your basement! What a mess. My son used to have a basement that would flood in the rains of spring, once when he had baskets of folded clothes on the floor waiting for someone to carry them up the stairs . . .
It is Winterspring for sure!
Now the party! What fun and what a great hostess. The soup sounds fantastic, the muffins and the wonderful salad - and she even gave you take home! The pie looks delicious too! And the flowers!!! I love all the smiles!

I remember Howdy Doodywith great affection. Our old girl Kitty has been shocking us all to bits by playing too. I swear it has been years. No water in my basement.....yet. Keeping my fingers crossed but I did roll up the rugs.

One of my first posts I read of yours a long time back was a group of you and your friends having a good time together. I keep coming back because you refresh me with your friendships and connections. I love this. I love the food all and you shared. I LOVE THE FLORAL arrangement. She did a beautiful job!!!

We have had a bit of flooding here as well. I had to drive home yesterday in a severe thunderstorm. It was truly terrible.

Have a fantastic week.

I can relate to a flooded basement. Not fun. I can empathize.

One day it's record setting highs and the next we are digging out of a foot of snow. Mother nature is off her meds!

What an amazing birthday. Now I am starving. It's great to be able to visit and actually leave you a comment again. Hope your weather improves, dear Jeanie.

That lunch looks delicious. You know I've never had a key lime pie? I do love the floral arrangement. It's to die for and I'm envious of your many get togethers with groups of friends. I remember those days here but somehow in the past decade or more all of that evaporated.

Your description of March in Michigan feels perfectly captured by the whimsical character Princess Summerfall Winterspring, a season that can’t quite decide whether it belongs to winter or spring

So sorry the basement flooded! What all was damaged? You have terrific friends and talented, too. Glad you are able to walk the ditch. What a soggy spring.

March is pretty kind here, so far. Yesterday, Miriam and I were out in the country, and in several places there were sap buckets on the maple trees, and we saw our first Killdeer and Red-winged Blackbirds of the year. Regarding key lime pie, we were in Key West, Florida in November 2004, had visited the Hemingway house and had lunch. We were too full for dessert, which we hardly ever eat anyway, but the waitress convinced us to come back later for a slice of the best key lime pie anywhere, and we did. It was delicious, but whether it was the best ever I have no idea, since it’s the only key lime pie I have ever had!

Hello Jeanie,
I am sorry to hear about the water in your basement.
Our weather has been up and down for weeks now, they are still calling for temps in the 30's and possibly some snow. Yesterday we hit 70°. Love the ducks and is that a muskrat? Lizzie is a cutie, I am glad she is playing with her toys. Lovely photos of you and your friends. The luncheon looks wonderful, lots of yummy food. The flowers are a cheery sight! Take care, enjoy your day and the week ahead.

Yep that's our weather in a nutshell...except not use to tornadoes this early. How awful for those affected. The flower arrangement was perfect for a perfect and delish meal. My sister had her bridal shower at Hudson's and we had the Maurice Salad there. So sad it is no longer there. Janice

Winter has been relentless. Our spring is delayed as a result. However, this weekend was 80, 75, and 70 Fri-Sun, respectively. I made sure I got out in the landscape for small chores each day just so I could see the slow changes happening (it was glorious). I hope soon you will feel and see it too. The water issue is exhausting, I'm sure. Thank goodness for good friends and good times.

...of course I remember and loved "The Howdy Doody Show." We all need to remember that spring is a tug-a-war between winter and summer. When summer gets the upper hand we get to enjoy mud season, that's the way things work!

Fun visits and great pics. That Key lime pie is to die for, lol. I hope you get some sunshine amidst all that rain. The blooms are coming.

Jeanie what fun with friends...loved the animal pics but sorry about the flooding. I would have just closed the door and prayed all the water would go away! LOL I was surprised to see your beautiful dinnerware...as I have had Mikasa 'Just Flowers' for over 50 years...I have a service for 12 that I only bring out on special occasions...I really should use it more. When we lived in Kansas, the saying was to wait five minutes and the weather would change...guess it is pretty much like that everywhere except here in Florida where our weather forecast is the same every day (except for hurricane season), have a bright and sunny week...I hope. hugs

Well your spring is further along than ours is here in New Hampshire, and I don't know if that helps you feel better about this winter or not. (But right now we are having a warm up and a big melt meaning huge puddles and mud but I will take it. Smile.) Wow, you've had a couple of delicious lunches for certain. That Maurice Salad looks amazing. It's almost too pretty to eat. And I bet it was fun times with the friends. Thank goodness for social time especially at this time of year. I'm heading out to the beach walk with a couple of friends today since there really isn't any other place to walk right now. I'm looking forward to it.Enjoy your week and I hope spring continues for you. hugs-Erika

I’m sorry to hear your basement flooded again! That’s got to be beyond frustrating. The only really good thing about March is knowing we’re much closer to spring! It’s supposed to be 60+ degrees today. But it was shocking to hear of the tornadoes just south of us and all the destruction and deaths. Who would have thought that for early March. All that food looks so yummy. I love a great key lime pie.

I think you may appreciate spring so much more than we do because of your winter weather! It looks like you had fun at the get-together.

A flooded basement is just about the worst! So sorry to hear about yours (and didn't you just go through this recently? so unfair!). In many ways, March seems like an awful month, even worse than February, and longer to boot. I'm currently, thanks to you, re-reading When Wanderers Cease to Roam, and when I came to March and saw the opening illustration featuring 14 different types of mud, it made me laugh. We sure have a lot of it, all varieties.

Looks like your friends rescued you with some welcome distraction. What an amazing birthday celebration for your friend Kate! Gorgeous flowers, amazing food, and that key lime pie looks delectable. And the luncheon looks wonderful, as well -- your table setting is so pretty and spring-like!

Glad to hear Mz Lizzie is perking up a bit.

Have a great week!

So sorry about water in the basement. How frustrating. Dining with friends is always fun. The menu looks wonderful. Key lime pie is a favorite. Yumm.

Dang, flooding in the basement...shudder....Hopefully the $$$$we spent on the roof and professional gutters will put an end to our issues. Lovely outdoor photos...yes, I sorta think of Mother Nature on Steroids and a bit Menopausal...LOL. Yours is a 'nicer version' and I went as Princess SWSpring for Halloween...I adored that program and I had her as a puppet. Hugs for you and your friends..the best part about a month.

The campus 'sunbathers' are funny. Here n the snowbird resort where we spend winters we have a few days every season of 60 highs -- 40 in the mornings. There are always a few people (usually new part-time Floridians) who still wear shorts and tshirt (or less) anyway -- it's like they are saying 'it's florida, I'm dressing for sunshine no matter what." (I on the other hand am in long pants unless it's 90 or above).

Jeanie, the water in the basement was certainly stressful. You have experienced a mix bag of weather. What fun times with friends and wonderful food to enjoy. The orchid is gorgeous. Take care of yourself!

Our weather has been erratic, too! It was rainy on Friday. Then we woke to a covering of snow on Saturday. I looked 3 times to make sure I could believe my eyes. Then it was 60 yesterday. Your post title is so accurate.

That salad brought back memories of the lunches I would get with my former colleague in the bottom level of the downtown Macy's! They had all of these different deli counters/take away option. I would get a salad with meat chopped into thin strips. I had forgotten about that place until I saw that photo! Our downtown Macy's closed several years ago. I really miss that lunch spot! It was a good place to go since there was something for everyone!

Your lunch gatherings sound great! And no shame on the TJ's stir fry. I bought all of the food for my little puzzle party in February to reduce the stress of the gathering. No one seemed to notice or care. People were happy to load their plates with snacky things! I do enjoy cooking and making a dish from scratch but I need time and energy to do so and I was in a deficit situation in February...

I'm so glad you have the good times with friends to counter the stresses such as a flooded basement. And I like your little circle scarf :-)
