Lake Break -- Some Family Time but Someone was Missing

We had a wonderful time during our trip to Minneapolis, but someone was missing from our family gathering. Rick's aunt Beth, the woman we were going to honor and remember, died earlier this summer. It was our time to remember her, to celebrate the joys of being with family and to cherish every moment spent together. Beth would have loved it.

Rick's Aunt Beth had Spina Bifada from childhood. One might think that could keep a woman down but not Beth. She ushered for the symphony, was an enthusiastic volunteer for numerous organizations, traveled the world with family and friends, and engaged in sailing, alpine skiing and more. Her passion for life was both contagious and inspiring. One could not be around Beth and later depart without a will to be a better person, to be as strong, curious and engaged as she.

She cared deeply for her family, both immediate and extended. And while she had faced the deaths of two of her adopted children and her husband, Gene, she remained strong, positive, looking to the future.

Rick with Beth and her husband, Gene, at their daughter Andrea's graduation from Cranbook.

Beth and her sister Carol were major influences in Rick's young life. As years passed, he retained that warm relationship with them both, relationships he has treasured as they became more than "just aunts" but dear friends as well. When speaking at Beth's memorial, he recounted some of their past together as well as her impact on both himself and others.

Aunts Carol and Beth with baby Rick.

"Beth inspired me," he said. "Her physical limitations were plain for everybody to see. Plain to see for everybody but her, that is. She spent thousands of hours swimming, skiing, sailing, visiting world capitals and other things she 'couldn't do' I shared many of these activities with her and often offered a helping hand.It was always refused as unnecessary. She proved bad legs were merely obstructions, not limitations."

There are few things that could pull me from the lake in summer or stop Rick from a long Canadian bike hike. Honoring Beth and being with family was one we both would never miss. One highlight was getting to know Beth's granddaughters, Lucy and Minnie, better. They were truly lights in her life.

Four of Rick's five brothers were there and other relatives traveled from Florida, Utah, Indiana, Tennessee, Ohio, Michigan and Massachusetts and Minnesota.

Four generations were represented, this group among them -- the third generation.

Beth's daughter Sarah brought loads of photos and memorabilia that family members could take home.

And there were loads of old family movies that many had never seen before. We got to see the young Beth, Carol, and Rick's dad, Dick.

  There was even Baby Rick!

Sarah arranged for a beautiful family dinner, featuring Beth's favorite foods. After, it was time to "Ask the Elders." Knowing that Dick and Aunt Carol were present, it was time for the younger generations to ask questions to help fill in some of the family history blanks. Dick's wife, Kathy, also had loads of family information to share.

Our time came to an end as all headed home. Most went to the airport. We hopped in the car and after leaving in the rain, ended up seeing ore of the beautiful farmland of Wisconsin that we'd enjoyed on the first leg of the trip.

We drove home under the first day of the Supermoon Blue Stugeon Moon (badly photographed from the car, cruising along on Michigan's bumpy roads).

I'll have lots of memories of the weekend, catching up with family. But the best memories will be of Beth -- her smile, her spirit, her joy. I'll think of times past like this, when there was loads of laughter and big smiles.

I bet Beth would remember times like this, too.

Her passing was marked well. Memory is a funny thing, but I suddenly remembered a student who had spina bifida. I even remember his name. First time I have thought of him in more than 25 years, and I only had him for one semester.

My condolences to you and Rick.
A fitting tribute for a life well lived
We have a lady in our village with Spina Bifida. Went to University, married now with two children. Sadly, both children have brittle bone disease. Such trauma but she keeps on pushing through like Rick's Aunt. Both born in a time when so little was known never mind understood about SB.

Celebrating someone and being joyful at having shared their company is far better than being miserable together.
It is sad that they aren't there to share those memories too, but being happy to have known them is best.
I love the idea of Ask the Elders

What a lovely tribute to a life well-lived. As someone with a sister who had spina bifida and who died only a few days after her birth (she would now have been 58) I find it very moving.

In some ways funerals can be joyful events. It brings people together who seldom see each other and compels us to reflect on a life lived well. I think that Beth would understand that.

Condolences to you and Rick. We’ve had one crazy week. I’ll eventually write about it on my blog, but it ended with the news of my favorite cousin’s death. She was 91 years old, and died very unexpectedly. We’ll be driving down to Ohio for her funeral very soon. I’m really going to miss her, as Rick and you are missing Beth.

Wow, what a woman Beth was! What a great family gathering, and such a smart idea to have the Q&A with Carol. Love the old photographs as well as the current. Rick and his brothers look like me and my sisters when we all line up - you MIGHT be able to tell us apart, but there's no denying we come from the same gene pool. :)

Sounds like a beautiful celebration of her life. I love the Ask The Elders idea!! I wish we had done something like that at some funerals. I would know more than I do today. I am a most uninformed eldest of the living generation. She looks like a charming lady full of life and positivity. :)

I am so sorry for the passing of Rick's Aunt Beth. She sounded like an amazing lady. These events are always bittersweet, the sadness of having to say goodbye to someone dear, but the joy of meeting people we haven't seen sometimes in years. And then exchanging memories from times past. What a sweet idea to ask the older generation to fill in the family history. Thank you for sharing these lovely photos and memories Jeanie.

I am so sorry to read of Rick’s Aunt Beth’s passing. She must have been a wonderful person not to let her physical challenges keep her from enjoying a full life! I read many years ago that every time an older person dies, so does a library! Thanks for sharing the sweet memories!

Wow, what a special woman. I am glad so many were able to gather together to celebrate her life. I love seeing pictures of baby Rick! And what a gift to have such special relationships with his aunties! I am really close to one of my aunts but we aren't as close since I had children but hopefully we will get back to being closer again when I have fewer demands on my time!

That sounds like such a moving tribute to such a wonderful and vibrant lady! It's funny the way funerals become like mini family reunions though we always say we aren't going to wait for another one to get together like that time just seems to slip by so quickly...
