I Just Keep Painting....

Sketchbook Revival has really pushed me to try new techniques and practice drawing and sketching as well as painting. So here we have the good, the bad and the ugly!

Below, another loosening up exercise. Draw something about your body you like (my face); something representing the hats you wear in life, and your front door.

Some classes took me out of my comfort zone. This was one. The challenge was to do a face but only use three colors (and black and white). I chose orange, pink tones and dark purple. It turned out pretty well for this kind of thing.

But I thought, what if I tried that with one of my pet portraits. So, I blocked in a quick Lizzie drawing and tried it in deep blue, turquoise and green! Her eyes are a little wonky but it works!

The exercise below is in color mixing. The top left bright pink was the base color for all of these. The various colors are what happens when I mixed other colors from my palette with that pink.

This was a challenge for me -- a very loose floral from a photo. We did two smaller sketches and a larger piece.

Then, using some of the techniques from that, I painted tulips from one of my photos. I was quite pleased with this -- a different style for me, but I liked it.

This was a fun one -- Zoom drawings! I chose my monthly Zoom group to draw. We all looked MUCH younger in my drawings (I don't think anyone in the group was particularly flattered by this one but it was fun to do!)

I really enjoyed painting these fanciful mushrooms. In the class, we were supposed to do them, cut them out and use them in a mixed media piece but I didn't feel like hauling out all my mixed media materials so I did them as a watercolor in a fanciful grassy scene.

In the class below, we used pencil to create a person, smudging the lines with a cloth to soften things. Then using two colors -- Payne's Gray and metallic gold -- painted the piece. I'm not used to figure drawing so this was kind of fun.

Below, we're as loose as we can get! Wetting the paper well and using wet paint, we dropped three colors onto the page and let the paints run. Then, much as one would find shapes in a cloud, we were to sketch in the shapes we "saw" when our paints dried. I was glad I picked garden colors!

In this piece, we were given a challenge of duplicating a photo in paint, drawing by focusing on shape rather than on detail. I was quite pleased with how this one turned out.

Finally, after doing all the class things, I returned to one of my favorite subjects from a photo I took in Giverny. (I think those trees are too pink, don't you? They need to be toned down and with a bit of violet in them.)

It feels so good to paint again!

Both Lizzie and the face in the picture above her look beautiful!
I prefer portraits of people and drawings of still items to drawing of flowers. Even the best of artists can't compete with the perfection of God's nature.

Glad you are enjoying your painting and your class revival sessions! It is fun to see all of the different techniques.

You mentioned on facebook that you wanted to see my finished painting of the hydrangeas. You can click here to see it on my blog.

You missed posting the ugly ones.

Nice work. The tulip technique has a lot of possibities. I think wet on wet watercolors takes a lot of courage.

I love all of this!! When it is less cold here and my fingers are not frozen I may just pick up my brush again. You inspire me.

I can click a shutter button, but that is the extent of my artistry. You are quite gifted, I like the girl and the dog.

I don't think you have anything ugly. Maybe you should call this the good, better and best. It was fun seeing your art, and exciting to be inspired, isn't it? I love the lady and her dog in the back of the car. And the zoom, and the flowers...etc. I hope you've had fun this weekend besides painting. Hugs-Erika

Wow, Jeanie -- this is so much fun to see, and very inspiring! It's especially interesting to me to see how much room for expression there is when you limit your palette. I love the blue Lizzy... thanks so much for sharing these!

Jeanie,
Where do I begin? All of these paintings are wonderful! No ugly here.
You have such a great style. Love your floral paintings, my favorite is the tulips. The woman that you painted using Payne's Gray and metallic gold, and the little girl with the dog are outstanding!!!!
You just keep getting better and better, Jeanie. Great work!

Those three-color portraits are wonderful. I especially like the one of Lizzie, but those colors are among my favorites. Pushing the boundaries a little always is good. It's easy enough to repeat what we're good at, but developing more skills is a worthy goal!

Love these, they are all great. My favourite ones are the one with a dog and the other one when a cat winks at you.

Look at you go girl! Nice. I need something to kick me in gear. Craft room is done but the get up and go must have got up and went.

Oh I love them all. What fun to see.
Your wet paint is like what I do on the teabags because the paint seems to travel on that absorbent paper. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
Loves your colorful mushrooms and even your zoom group.

LOVE that you share all your wonderful paintings. so refreshing and fun. This is great encouragement!

Jeanie, as I have said many times before, "You are amazing." I wouldn't begin to try and select a favorite. Although, I am drawn to the girl loving her dog, Lizzie, and the garden colors. But, they are all amazing to me. I should send you a drawing of my stick people and then you would know what a talent you are. Have a great week, Jeanie.

Oh wow! I was too feeble to participate but I watched every one of the classes and you did a fantastic job!!! You brought me on a memory tour of all those videos. Yes, a lot of them were outside my comfort zone, too--but looks like it was such fun to try new things. Wonderful!! Just wonderful!! :)

Your artwork is magical - I love how you capture the whimsy of a face or place.....and how your love of living shines through.
Your painting next to the photograph shows so much more depth and vividity in your own interpretation than in the actual image. I love the way you see:)
Thanks for sharing the beauty (and big love to you in the taking gentle care)

Oh, Wow, Jeanie! These are all wonderful! Such fun techniques to try. So interesting to see how you did them, too. I am just learning to paint, so you are my inspiration. I like the 3-color lady and cat and how you created a painting out of letting the wet paint swirl where it wanted to. But I love them all, actually. Happy painting! x K

What fun exercises! I particularly love the 3 color pieces. They look amazing with so few colors! Your mushrooms are adorable and so whimsical. The Zoom drawings seems like quite a challenge trying to get everyone's likeness. Those pink trees could totally stay as is. I definitely see azaleas that exact color every year. Mother Nature is amazing with color!
