Winter in the House

I have an awkward relationship with January. It's fresh, a clean slate, time to get on the stick and do something! It's also cold, there's stuff to clean up and put away, and I just want to chill out -- without being chilled!

Truth is, my friend Kate captured my mood exactly in her January calendar offering. For that matter, she captured Lizzie's mood perfectly too!

Like some of you, I switch to winter decor after Christmas comes down. Which, fortunately, some of it -- like the bottlebrush forest -- can stay up and get a refresh!

The Santas, the vertical swag and the Jeanie-meets-Santa photo are down but the snowfolk have overtaken the mantel!

This silver fellow, photographed before I took down the glittery tree, is a real favorite of mine!

And, since that wasn't enough room without crowding it, they also got a spot in their own little village!

I especially like the tall one, an art fair find many moons ago.

My kitchen shelf looks much the same as I decided to keep the small wooden German ornaments in place.

But of course I had to add a snowguy here or there!

Isn't this poinsettia a gem? My friend Jacqie brought it before Christmas and I haven't killed it yet! The pot in which it sits is a Christmas gift from Rick and a wonderful reminder of the day we went Petoskey stone hunting with our friends, Pat and Susan.

A few snowfolk found their way into the hutch.

This one lights up. I need more batteries!

When I posted about the Southern Exposure Christmas Walk, many of you commented on how much you liked their take on the cathedral window with a wreath. I liked it too and decided to do something similar with mine.

I leave you with a snow angel...

...along with the best decoration in the house.

 And she makes noise, too!

We do think alike, jeanie, and as you may know from my post this week after the Christmas decos come down, the snowmen are put into place. I decorate the apt entry with them and this year left several on the living roo windowsill as well. And, January is a good month to chill and yes, read as well!

As far as I know I don't have a particular approach to January, or to any other month for that matter. The wide world of nature is my eternal preoccupation and I get out there and benefit from it, whatever the season, whatever the month, whatever the weather (within reason) and I can truthfully say that I go bed each night well contented. It seems to me that's enough for anyone.

Everything looks beautiful! I love January but of course being in Florida it's usually some of our most gorgeous weather of the year. On my calendar the kitty would have to be tapping at our faces from 4am until we get up to feed him *sigh* Have a lovely weekend. :)

I love all your winter decorations, Jeanie. I was ready to take down Christmas this year and just do a clean slate. January and February are my two worst months of the year. We are so cold dark and gloomy here and I get antsy. Especially with all the shut-downs going on.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend. xo Diana

I know what you mean about January. I should be doing things around the house also. It's the perfect time to clean a cabinet or a bookshelf, isn't it? But who wants to? Its better to hibernate, isn't it? I love the snowmen by the way. It is January festive! Stay warm and have a nice weekend Jeanie. hugs-Erika

Hello Jeanie,
Lizzie is Looking adorable! Your decorations are pretty, love the snowmen.
I am reading more books on these cold days, too cold and windy for a walk outside. I am a wimp. Take care, enjoy your weekend!

We are having quite a frigid January to the east of you. I know it isn’t exactly balmy where you are, but our high temperature today if -0.5F today. The high. In most years there has been a temporary time of thaw, but so far this year, that is not happening.

How fun to have your snow people about for your winter decor. I just heard that the area of NC that I lived in until recently is getting 20 inches of snow! I am enjoying my Florida sunshine.

It took me a minute -- and an internet search -- to figure out that the line about 'silver white winter' comes from that song about favorite things. I don't remember ever hearing it -- apparently I stop listening after the first couple of famous lines! Of course I agree about your bestest decoration, too!

I take it Lizzy leaves your decor alone. No cat my folks ever had would. Your house always looks lovely and full of charm.

Expecting a foot of snow tonight, so our home will be a winter wonderland outside. I really haven't done much more than take down Christmas. I didn't do my usual all white for January this year, just not motivated since we cannot have any guests. So, the everyday stuff that is out most of the year is on the tables and shelves. Lots went to the thrift store, as we just don't need so much stuff anymore.

I'm afraid once Epiphany arrives, Christmas exits left, chased by bear. Soon I'll start putting up hearts. I do love seeing your Winter decorations very much. Frosty and sparkly!

I keep out some of my little trees. Snowmen would be fun, but I don't have any except for a votive holder I keep in the bathroom. That silvery snowman is a treasure, but you have a lot of great ones I can't pick a favorite :)

Jeanie, I love your snow people, all your winter decorations and that poinsettia is gorgeous. But none can top Miss Lizzie. I pulled her through the screen and gave her a big hug and kiss. She was quite ready to go back to her spot.

Have a great weekend, Jeanie. We have a big snowstorm on the way for tomorrow.

What a great display. I think Christmas can be carried a bit of time more. Last year I kept the tree up until March.

Awwe,, such a beautiful kitty! I love your collection of snow people, such a fun variety. What a good idea to leave up winter stuff after you take down the Christmas decor. Don't know why that never crossed my mind. It gets so gray and dreary here in the Pacific Northwest that a little snowperson or two would certainly brighten things up!

Oooh I love that tall snowman, too. There is just something about it! So cute! I don’t love January either. It’s often bitterly cold. I feel so cooped up with our kids since it’s often too cold to have them outside. I have been bit by an organization bug so have been organizing drawers and making lists of projects for each room to tackle throughout the year. But I have focused on organizing our kitchen so far. I know this motivation will fade so I am leaning into it while I have it!

What charming decorations! Love the snow and snowman theme. Lizzie looks like the "cat's meow," as the saying goes. And I especially liked your opening line: "I have an awkward relationship with January . . . It sounds like the opening to an enticing book.

Jeanie, I love all your snowmen out for Wintertime. They are all cute and seem to have special memories for you. First of all, I LOVE THAT "silver white winters" sign. And I see you still have my favorite lantern on your mantel that's so unique and charming. Your German ornaments in your kitchen are special too. The RED poinsettias are my favorite. I just saw some blue glittery ones on a friend's blog. I'm sure they are dyed, but were so cool. I like what you did with your window with the berries and peace sign, so creative. And a wonderful photo of your precious cat. I just decorated for Valentine's Day, and it was a fun thing to do, as it's been cold here as well and staying in a lot right now.

Have a restful weekend, Jeanie.

The kitty calendar is so cute and I do like your snow folk. You’ve given me an idea that maybe I don’t have to take everything down just yet. I left them up later than usual as I thought a visiting family member would enjoy them. She left yesterday and so I have slowly been packing things up. I can see why your silver fellow is a favorite. He’s lovely as is the rest of your adorable village. Your poinsettia is beautiful also and looking a lot better than mine. A delightful collection Jeanie, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. Finishing off with your cute little kitty is icing on the cake :)

Cute idea keeping out the snowmen for winter. That calendar is so cute and how well depicted! My cat is currently sitting on the floor heating vent. Never seems to be enough heat for them!

We took the Christmas decorations down a week ago. I miss the glow and festive atmosphere. I keep the antique sled with wreath and lights on the porch until it stops snowing (sometimes late May or even into June!)I love all your snow people but Lizzie is the best decoration.

After I put my trees away, I get out my snow people. Great minds seem to think alike.

I LOVE Kate's calendar page. That is definitely a cats life, except Squiggles wakes me when he's hungry, which seems to be all the time. Bleubeard is more like te cat in the calendar. So cute and adorable, just like all your snow people and Lizzie.
