Paris In July: What's Your Favorite Recommendation?

Rick and I will be spending three full days in Paris in early October on the way to England.

We've been there before so we've seen the "regulars" -- d'Orsay, Louvre, Notre Dame, Montmartre, all that. But it's a big city and loads more to see!

So, if you were going to Paris for a few days and had seen all the biggies, which attraction, shop, cafe or restaurant, museum, or other spot would you choose?

Remember -- early October!

Thanks for the recommendation and here is mine -- a must for history and medieval fans:

The Musée de Cluny - Musée national du Moyen Âge, formerly the Musée national du Moyen Âge, or just the Musée de Cluny, or the Musée national du Moyen Âge – Thermes et hôtel de Cluny.

Here's what I wrote about it after my 2009 visit!

All the pix in this post are from there!

Happy to share today with the last of Tamara's Paris in July at Thyme for Tea! Check her site and if you are a fan of Paris or France, visit some of the fun links posted over the last four weeks!

Hello, beautiful images. I am pretty sure I will not be visiting Paris, at least I am able to enjoy your photos. The trip to Paris and England sounds awesome. Happy weekend to you!

What fun to have a few days in Paris! I just saw all the biggies on my trip and loved it all. I have such a long list of things I missed but will I ever get back? Don't know. Enjoy the planning.

I have never been to Paris, but can't wait to see your pictures!

Both Paris and England are on my bucket list, but I will have to content myself to seeing photos of your trip when you return. Sounds like you might want to visit the internet for interesting places that are off the beaten path.

Lucky you: the Cluny museum just reopened after a big renovation! How could you resist another visit?

Have you been to the Musee du Quai Branley? It's great! http://www.quaibranly.fr/en/

Another suggestion is to pay a disciplined visit to the Louvre -- that is, choose a section that you haven't seen before and try to get there directly before you are distracted by the biggies. Three amazing choices: the Islamic art section (which is pretty new); the medieval section (which has a lot of fabulous objects that once upon a time were loaned to the Cluny museum); or the Dutch Masters section (one of the best collections of that art anywhere).

Two much smaller museums are the Marmottan (mostly Monet http://www.marmottan.fr/ -- and in a delightful obscure neighborhood) and the Guimet (Asian art -- http://www.guimet.fr/ ).

It's a biggie, but have you gone Versailles? You didn't mention that but I am guessing you have been there. Otherwise all I have done in Paris is the biggies only having been there once. We did walk the Catacombs, which was interesting how they stacked bones and made statues and little church areas, and it is October and Halloween, but I know that isn't for everyone. It will be a fabulous trip even if you just walk around the city or ride the bateau bus up and down the river. And if someone asks you if you lost a ring, just keep walking-it is a scam for money. What are your plans for England? Hugs-Erika

How wonderful that you will spend a few days in Paris. For me I would want to hit the Eiffel Tower and maybe the Sacre Couer. I really just want to soak up the atmosphere and try the food. The quaint little restaurants and cobblestone streets are what I find appealing.

You obviously know it better than I do!

For me it would be art museums, perfumes and pastry shops and everything else I'd want to see.

We were there in May and the weather was perfect. Actually we saw a concert in a chapel called San Chapel I believe...it was on the Isle de Cite' I believe...it was magnificent....and it was for free. If you could find some venue such as that I'm sure you would enjoy it.

How very wonderful Jeanie! What a lovely trip to look forward to. I have not been there since I was a child, so I can't make any recommendations. I am sure you will have a lovely time. How exciting also that you will be in England! Any chance you will be near anyplace in the Northwest? Wouldn't it be fun to meet up. In any case you are sure to have a lovely time! xoxo

I'm not even going to ask what map or route you're using on which Paris is "on the way" to London from U.S. I'm just going to let it lie there and enjoy the rest :P

The Musée de Cluny is one of my favorite Paris museums - not the favorite, but certainly at the top of the list.

I will assume you've gone to all the great must-spend-money spots like Shakespeare and Company, Ladurée, and seeing a grand opera at Palais Garnier or a small show at . So, I will recommend a terrific production of whatever at Theatre Edouard VII (with English subtitles for us peasants!); pay a visit to Maison Duvelleroy, specializing in the creation and recreation of women's fans, at their Paris boutique at 14 rue Amelie, in the 7th arrondissement - stunning!
And if you're both adventurous, I've been DYING to go here, but never made it! It's only 30 minutes outside the city. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omBKnoyvEg4 If you go, write a blog post so I can convince the spouse that we need to make this little excursion our next pop over!

I've been enjoying your Paris series ... I could read them all year! Have a great week!

Jeanie, I'd have afternoon tea at the Hotel George V and also pop in for a hot chocolate at Laduree, And do some wine tasting.

I love to walk the alleys in the Quartier Latin; stroll around Montmartre away from the Place du Tertre; and hang out at the Place des Vosges. A lot of people watching.

Jeanie, Paris in October sounds perfect. I would just get lost wandering. But, Ladurée is a wonderful place to spend a little time. I could sit for hours at a cafe and people watch! I can’t wait to read about your trip and see your photos!

Jeannie, I don't know where you are staying but I can recommend several restaurants. On our recent visit to Paris In the Montparnesse area, La Rotounde is an excellent brasserie. We had an apertif and escargot there for lunch one day and we looked at the dinner menu. It sounded great and we were within walking distance of our hotel so we had dinner there. Dinner was delicious and we dined there another night also and were equally pleased.
On two prior visits to Paris we enjoyed Chez Fernand on Rue Christian near St Michel. Delicious and we felt special it seemed to be mostly locals dining there for a delightful ambience. Small and intimate with excellent food.
The Musée Carnavalet in the rue de Sevigne chronicles the whole history of the city and has a beautiful garden that stole my heart. I have a gorgeous book about Paris with the picture of the garden on the cover,"The Secrets of Paris" by Michael Kerrigan.
I can't wait to see your posts on your trip.

What an exciting trip on the horizon for you. Sorry...I have no recommendations as our last year's trip to Paris never happened...but we are still planning...and actually looking at real estate...I remind myself that we only get one chance through this life...made it a good one.

To answer your question, my recommendation (since you've already been to Paris) would be - to make a comprehensive market tour: food markets, street markets, flea markets, outdoor/covered markets, Friday/Sunday markets.

You have something really fun to look forward to!!--happy for ya! I've never been to Paris, so I dont have any recommendations, so sorry!--but I sure look forward to you sharing all about it with us when you get back, I just know you will take great pictures! How's little Cameron doing?

I love the Musee de Cluny very much. Another museum I love is the one in Montmarte by the vineyard. Have you been there? I loved it. Also the graveyard where Mozart and many famous people are buried. Go early in the morning and get a map. Then I love (but this is me, the tea lady) having tea at Mariage Freres. Oh just enjoy the ambiance~

Marilyn Miller said...

And yes! Shakespeare & Co. Ask if they have a tearoom at the top of the stairs. Laduree for a macaron, Angelica for hot chocolate.

I didn't know you were going to be able to fit 3 days in Paris in during your trip to England! How exciting!! Gosh I am excited for you and can't wait to live vicariously through you! If I had 3 days in Paris I would probably take a walking tour through "Paris Walks" and get to know a neighborhood I hadn't explored before. Out of all the museums I've seen, d'Orsay is my favorite! But my favorite thing to do in Paris is to just walk and take in the beautiful sights. A walk along the Seine, a café crème at a sidewalk café, some fries at a café with a view... those are my favorite things to do! Oh and if the weather is nice, spend some time in the park behind the Notre Dame. It's beautiful back there. There are lots of park benches to sit on and you can take in the beautiful views of the area!

I never did get my act together to participate in Paris in July!! The month just got away from me!!
