I'm enjoying my blog break at art camp and am popping in with a bit of a post to update you on things, before I disappear again. And I also have an update on Rick's bike ride. Being north, with very little media/computer involvement has been a very good thing for me. I've missed visiting (though on occasion I've lurked a bit in the morning before we get going!)
Leading into this was a rough week or so. My lung infection was more challenging than I expected (sinus and ear issues on top of it haven't helped) and I've been terribly fatigued. There was a problem with prior authorization getting one of my medications and probably the more important of the two. But finally, things came through and the good news is that the meds seem to be helping!I did start the one that affects what I can eat or drink on the day after my birthday so I could enjoy this! A fantastic, beyond belief red wine! Rick made a lovely dinner -- steak, tomatoes and corn. It was a grand birthday.
And this was my present! (You've seen this photo before, by oldest Greg, a pastel of a Sandhill crane.) I loved it so much and was truly surprised to open it and discover what I wanted and more! It wasn't framed yet, but Rick's got that covered, too. I couldn't be more elated.
The next day I had a good lunch with my WKAR group. It was a little smaller than some gatherings which is nice in its way (easier to hear everyone!), and our first since the station had layoffs due to the funding rescission of Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Sad times for every public broadcasting station in the country -- the laying off is extensive everywhere. And the programs suffering most are education, documentary and more. Essentially that makes up about 90 percent of PBS broadcast schedule. There will still be programs but probably more repeats, too, along with less local production and probably much less educational involvement. The Congress just did not understand that news forms very little of PBS content.
But, as mentioned, I'm now back at art camp with friend Kate. This is sort of an accidental post because of my blog break -- maybe for another week or till after Labor Day, though I might pop in for another update. Part of that is scheduling but much of it is self-care.
We're having a great time and clocking in the hours painting and sketching!
I will show you a couple things I've done already. This was from a Terry Runyan workshop -- she always does a project related to cats.
This is an accordion book from a workshop by Julie Hamilton. One interior side represents spring and summer with gardens.
The other side, fall and winter.
And these are several of my daily "Scavenger hunt" paintings -- paint something from outside was the first prompt. These were instigated by artist Lucia Leyfield. (Click to see larger)
I did another "Galaxy" painting with a different color palate. And am almost done with the England journal!
After spending a night at his aunt Carol's cottage and another at her home in Toledo, Rick crossed over to Pelee Island in Lake Erie and now is in Canada. Along the way, he met up with his high school band teacher, one of his earliest customers when he started his business, and distant cousins stemming from his grandmother's sister's line.
After visiting Carol, he took the boat to Pelee Island and said it was a great spot and he met some very nice people along the way, including a family he overnighted with in St. Mary's, Ontario.
On the down side, he's also had one day of riding in fiercely driving rain, and several (yesterday's was 90 miles) in a strong headwind the whole time. He even passed on camping last night and treated himself to a hotel room -- and that was a good thing. (Below, his stuff drying off in a picnic shelter while he stopped for lunch on the rainy day.)
If you want to follow Rick's cycling trip, visit Rick Oberle on Facebook. If you can't access his posts, friend him!
I miss the guy! But I'm going to get back to my blog break!
I'll check in with you if I can.

...have fun at camp.
Hello Jeanie,
I am glad you are enjoying your blog break and your art camp.
It is good the medicine is helping. I love the Sandhill Crane pastel, it is beautiful. Great shot of your work friends. The accordion book art is lovely, the spring, summer, fall and winter look beautiful. Sorry for Rick's bike ride in the bad weather, a break in the hotel room is a good idea. Take care, have a great weekend.
Its nearly middle of the night here in Indonesia when I am wiritng this comment
Sounds like you’re having a wonderfully creative and restorative time at art camp my friend. Love hearing about your workshops, scavenger hunts, and the gorgeous pastel gift from Greg.
Good night
Great post, though I'm sorry you're still not well. I love accordion books, paper, card, fabric -- I'm near the end of a stitched fabric book. I really just like the whole concept. You can save treasured cards that way, too, just hinge with scotch tape. Get well soon, please!
I neglected to wish you a happy birthday and another adventurous year trip around the sun.
I sure would enjoy a friend like Kate!
We are looking forward to seeing Rick soon. I'm so glad we can help him on his journey.
Have a wonderful time at the cottage!
Beautiful photos and art. I am so sorry 😞 you haven't been well. I have also been feeling very tired 😫 and I think in my case the heat 🥵 of the summer has not helped me. Enjoy your time. Warm greetings 🙏 😊 and hugs 🫂 🤗 ❤️
So glad you got the medication and it is helping...despite it curtailing what you like to eat and drink--lol!
Am so very glad you are enjoying your art camp time and are making such beautiful things and working on your travel journal, too.
Love the pastel crane by Greg! What a precious gift.
I hope your sweetie has some better weather for biking days!! Goodness! A hotel was in order just to dry off!
Enjoy your break. :)
Good to catch up with you! Your health issues are certainly concerning and need to be your priority now for sure. But the artwork! So good, especially the one of Big Ben. Found Rick on FB and sent a friend request. His journey sounds pretty amazing.
Happy Birthday!! Your art camp pictures are amazing, Jeanie! I liked hearing the names of the instructors and the details. (I really appreciate the ingenuity of the accordion picture properly now!)
The parts I didn't like are the down notes about your health and the WKAR layoffs. I hope both improve soon. Your health first... I can wait for WKAR's health.
I checked out his feed. He's awesome.
Keep enjoying your art camp.
I love seeing and hearing about your art camp such wonderful things happening. Glad to hear your feeling better.
That is quite a trip that Rick is taking when I get to facebook I will follow his journey.
Cathy
I'm glad you got your prescription coverage sorted in time and hopefully you'll be fully mended soon. Enjoy your blogging break in the meantime. I've been on an almost full social break for a few weeks but still blog 2x a week and visit a few blogs. I'm finding I needed it more than I realized and am finally getting a few longstanding things done as well as more rest. I'm glad Rick treated himself to a hotel room on the very rainy day and hope he fully enjoys his trip. Last, but not least, a very happy birthday. I love the painting!
It sounds like you had a fabulous birthday! I love all your artwork too.
Your birthday meal sounds fantastic. I am glad the drug and restrictive diet could wait!
I’m deeply saddened by the PBS cuts. I watched so much PBS as a child (and boy did I loathe the membership drive because of the scheduling disruptions. Don’t take my Sesame Street away!!). Now my kids love the aps and shows. They have so many great shows! The boys have both loved Wild Kratts and Super Readers but the list goes on and on. And their games are so entertaining and educational. It’s a shame how they’ve been defunded.
Art camp looks and sounds amazing, though. How fun to share this hobby with a dear friend. I imagine your shared interest has brought you closer!
Have fun and enjoy camp!
So pleased you had a great birthday :)
Enjoy art camp and your time away from the blog.
All the best Jan
Hi Jeanie, so glad your meds were sorted out. I have taken note of that fabulous red wine. Always looking for ideas for when we buy a bottle of red. Your sandhill crane gift, I bet you were thrilled. It’s a lovely work of art. A splendid photo of your WKAR group, they look a really nice group. Definitely sad times for public broadcasting as you say. We have been big fans of PBS for years. A delightful poster for your Art Camp, and your other pretty works. You are a very talented lady and I love your style. Good to know Rick is enjoying his tour. Too bad about the rain. I’ll check his trip out on Facebook. I think I can still get back on, though I don’t usually go there anymore. Don’t know why I stopped but it’s been yonks! I hope you are feeling better and will be back to 100 percent if you aren’t there already. Have a great weekend in good health!
It's been too long since I visited, Jeanie. It seems I find you mostly tickety-boo, but having had a lung infection - which sounds ghastly/serious. I hope all is OK. However, hours spent painting and sketching sounds very sensible - and, from the looks of it, joyous! It also seems the borders haven't yet been closed between the USA and Canada - further positive news!
Beautiful paintings. I like the darker clouds on the 'fall' side of the accordion painting. And Big Ben! So much detail. I'm glad Rick is enjoying his ride. Sounds like quite the adventure. Enjoy the rest of your time at camp!
Both you and Rick have been navigating challenges with resilience, finding moments of joy and connection even amidst the setbacks
Your paintings are beautiful! Art camp would be fun, even at my years.
So glad the meds are helping -- here's to feeling 100% very soon. And Happy Birthday! Looks like a wonderful meal, wonderful company, wonderful gifts. And art camp looks like it is doing you good as well. As for Rick's bike trip? He's certainly a resilient guy -- I wouldn't last 5 minutes in that kind of wind/rain. Here's hoping the worst of the ride is behind him. But that news that you're starting to feel better? Best news ever! 💜
What a great blessing it must be to your body and soul to be less connected virtually and more present with your friends and creativity, in real time and place. And I'm glad you got the medicine eventually. The mental stress of missing meds can only exacerbate the physical effects of not getting treated. Sink into this restful time!
