Postcards From the Lake: Rick -- 70 Years and Counting

Rick has not been looking forward to turning 70. I can relate -- I remember feeling somewhat the same. What is it about those zero (and to a lesser degree, the "five") year birthdays that can get us in a funk? At any rate, I was determined it would be a good time.

That said, how do you have a good time at the lake when all your friends and most of your family is elsewhere at the moment? Well, you extend the merriment!

Rick's natal day started with a visit from son Greg and his friend Aiden, who was getting a ride to the airport. Aiden was a great guy and we were glad he joined in the celebration. Even better, Greg came with brunch! He had made the most delicious fritatta and it couldn't have been better!

It was such a fun brunch! I added some Michigan sweet cherries to the mix.

Of course, Rick had to have a candle in his piece and yes, we sang the birthday song.

And yes, there were presents . . .

. . . and photos! Thanks to Aiden, we didn't have yet another crummy selfie!

After the guys left, we took off for our excursion -- we headed about 25 minutes south to Grayling, Michigan, to go canoeing down the Au Sable River.

Now, I'm no skilled canoer (is that even a word? Canoeist?) In any event, we stayed upright for the two-hour paddle, with Rick doing most of  the paddling and me trying to remember left from right when I had to react quickly.

It was all quite perfect with one big exception. Since I fully anticipated tipping the canoe, I'd given Rick my camera for his bag (carefully ziplocked too). Well, that was smart -- except I couldn't photograph how stunningly beautiful it was. We saw three herons, one in flight, low before us; two others maybe ten feet away on the edge of the river. There were countless dragonflies and a variety of colors and stripes; a number of birds and wonderful shoreline wildflower patches. The photo above was taken from the dock. Believe me, I have lots of photographs of the heart.

The water was crystal clear -- the photo above was where we took off (it's cut off at the top because of that bridge over the river!). But as you can see below, the water was pristine -- and like this all the way, seeing the bottom except in slightly deeper parts.

When we got back to the canoe livery, we enjoyed some time watching boats prepping to compete in the annual Au Sable River Marathon on the upcoming weekend. This is a 24-hour race that begins in the evening and goes from Grayling across the state, almost to Lake Huron. (If you want to see how it starts -- and it's worth checking out the first couple of minutes of this video -- check out this youtube link. It's insane!)

As we watched, we saw these racers really working out in their specially designed racing canoes.

And the canoe livery was decked out for the occasion too, with racing flags and bunting.

What would be better than barbecue after a long paddle? We headed to Ray's BBQ, Blues and Brews where we sat by the river, watching more racers practice. And yes, we enjoyed it all!

Dinner was terrific -- well priced and even better prepared. We both had the pulled pork which comes with cornbread and two sides. We both had the blue cheese coleslaw; Rick had mashed sweet potatoes and I ordered the "Almost Famous" fries, which we shared.

We didn't leave hungry! Then it was home for presents and to enjoy a lovely evening. And best of all, we get to continue the celebration with Kevin, Molly, Greg and the grands in another few days!

Maybe he'll think 70 isn't so bad after all!

Turning 70 can definitely feel like a milestone that makes us pause, but you captured how meaningful it can be to stretch out the joy with good company and beautiful moments.

You are right about those birthdays that end in 0 or 5. I don't think 70 is very old, but I had a hard enough time turning 65 this year so I can relate to Rick. But what a fun birthday, and even better that he gets to extend it. Happy birthday Rick, and glad you both had such a wonderful day. hugs-Erika

Happy birthday, Rick. It's always nice to spread a birthday out over several days. Looks like you enjoyed the day, too.

That canoe race was INSANE. I'm surprised people didn't get hurt trying to get their canoes in the water. I was expecting someone to tip over before they actually started.

So glad the day turned out well. And I'm sure Rick feels less unhappy with his big 70, now.

Happy birthday to Rick! I love canoeing the Au Sable River. Once even canoed 8 hours right to the cabin we had rented on the river. It was owned by the canoe rental. Janice

What a wonderful way to mark a milestone birthday, surrounded by family, nature’s beauty, and the thrill of the upcoming marathon, it sounds like Rick’s 70th was truly memorable and full of heart.

I am glad that Rick had such a great time. A birthday has never bothered me at all. The years just click over, one after the other. On Thursday night we will be celebrating the 85th birthday of a dear friend of ours. She is riddled with one illness after another, so it’s a real question how many more she will have. Birthdays here come and go like any other day, and I am perfectly fine with that.

Hello Jeanie, and Happy Birthday Rick. :)
Spending birthdays with family is always good, and you certainly made the most of the day Paddling, watching nature from the water, and eating tasty meals. A fun way to celebrate a70th birthday.
All the best, and many more birthdays to come.

What a great day, Happy Birthday, Rick. It seems Rick and I are born in the same year. I turned 70 earlier this year. I can't believe it though.

Happy Birthday to Rick! It's hard to believe my 70th was almost a decade ago, or that I'm already pondering how to celebrate my coming 79th. Around my 70th, I added the following to a comment on someone else's blog, and liked it so much I saved it. He can consider it a gift: perhaps the best bit of wisdom I've ever come up with!

"I’m down to about twenty years now, give or take, and getting in shape, preserving the good health I have, and not wasting time on the stupid, the boring, or the irrelevant is right up there on top of my list. If I manage to avoid stupid, boring, and irrelevant, I’ll have plenty of time for what’s important."

My Joe is 75! I don't think we've really thought about age.
I remember reading the newspaper to a hospice client and saying, let's look and see if we are in the obits! If not, it'll be a good day. She was 96.

I so remember birthdays on the screened in porch at the cottage. Here we haven't used the porch yet, it's been too cold in spring, and way too hot ever since. We pass through to go to the extra fridge and to the garden...sigh. Lovely water...we have algae issues on our lake again...just too much heat, even with the great wash out rains. HUGS< Sandi and Congrats to Rick...Enjoy!

Jeanie,
Thanks so much for stopping by! I have made appointments with my PCP and my gastroenterologist. I am actually feeling pretty good today.. Happy Birthday to Rick..Let me give a different perspective on turning 70....My husband Joe passed away only a few months before his 70th Birthday so he never had the privilege of turning 70. I never got to give him the little party I had planned with our family....Please let Rick know this because life can change in an instant...
Hugs,
Deb

Dear Jeanie,
please send my warmest birthday wishes to Rick! 🎉🎂
Since I have dear friends ranging in age from around 30 to about 85, I know that turning 70 is truly just a number. Of course, it reminds us that we're not getting any younger – but it also tells us that we've already had a much longer life than some others. And hopefully it tells us that we've made the very best of that time... as best as we could. 💛
Your birthday celebration, with your sons visiting, a canoe trip, and relaxing by the BBQ, looks wonderfully harmonious. May the celebrations with Kevin, Molly, Greg, and the grandkids be just as joyful! 🛶🍗👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
And may life continue in this enjoyable way for many more decades to come.

Much love from Austria,
Traude
