At Home: Trying to See the Light

We are finally seeing some sun here and slightly warmer temperatures. On occasion, that is. Well, significantly warmer temps than before, but inconsistent. When I started this, it was 51F and after lots of days in the 20s and 30s, that's a gift. The sun was  even more of a gift! Today we're back to gray sky and 39 but hey -- it's not single digits or twenties or snowing. We need a little warmth and light these days. A little peace, a little love. (And music is good too!)

As you know, I rarely talk politics on this blog. I suspect in most cases of followers here, I'm speaking to the converted, but I know not all of you share my political stance -- and it's probably no secret where I fall in that zone. I tend to save that for other spaces. But lately, I've found so many things upsetting, things that affect us all, and I have to take a minute to write on that, before I go on to cheerier things below.

You can't miss the news about our "democrazy," no matter where you live in the world. s going down fast, Our privacy and personal data being violated; significant humanitarian efforts rapidly shut down; and hundreds of thousands of career federal employees being forced out of their jobs. (Get your taxes in now -- and good luck with that.)

Just to be clear, I believe there is a lot of waste in government that should be addressed thoughtfully. It's not the issue of cuts but a matter of how they are being addressed and that impact on all of us, on our world. I equate it a bit to losing weight. You don't gain 50 pounds in a year and you don't expect to lose it that without severe actions that may have other consequences.

In what seems to make no sense at all, the US is forcing an economic crisis at home and for others by tariffs and we are losing international credibility and respect day by day as we alienate our allies. Don't even start me on my concerns for Ukraine.

Every day it is something different and collectively worse. You cannot make me believe that firing the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and blaming it on DEI was anything less than racism. Cutting Medicaid will have a disastrous effect on many families and particularly young children. Messing around with the Centers for Disease Control, National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration affects us all. Talk of buying Greenland, turning Gaza into Middle East's Riviera and making Canada the 51st state just makes us look extra stupid.

(By the way, if you tell me "if you're so miserable here, why don't you leave," it's a whole lot easier said than done. You think we haven't checked?)

America is dying. And this is from a woman who is usually so optimistic about life she pisses everyone else off.

The issues the US is facing aren't "red" issues or "blue" issues -- the impact hits home for all of us. Those eggs are still expensive. This week (2/25) at Trader Joe's they are $3.49. Elsewhere, higher.  Those in Michigan working for the auto industry (including our Kevin) will be dealing with a peck a production problems resulting in increased pricing if/when the tariffs go through. Do you think the factories to replace those parts to be built here will be done soon? Don't bet on it. Many people will be out of work for a long while and that will do very bad things to our economy.

I'm not stockpiling eggs -- I was making deviled eggs for Corkies, which is now like giving them caviar!
Food grown on American soil will cost more than it already does.  Who will pick Michigan cherries other crops in the country if all immigrants are deported (including those who are tax payers or have served in our military)? (And by the way, immigrants, documented or otherwise, often have very responsible jobs, not just field labor, though that's what everyone seems to mention.) With no USAID, what are the farmers who supplied that volume of food going to do?

I'm concerned about issues that affect our daily living (elimination of essential program and research grants and services that affect the underserved, our children, veterans, and seniors. Look for your TEMU prices to go up, and I hope you're not into avocado toast or guacamole unless you have quite the budget. (Avocados $2.79 each on 2/25 in Michigan.)

I guess what I'm saying is that NO ONE signed up for what is happening now, no matter how we voted. Eliminating government waste is not bad. Doing it wisely, carefully, should be essential. That hasn't happened.  Blaming DEI is pointless and insulting to just about everyone. Eliminating jobs "on the spot" with no notice, severance or kindness is simply barbaric. We, as a country, deserve better. (End of political talk)

I'm sure stress on this front has added to a challenging year personally, and especially this month. February started with a fall on the ice while shoveling, opening the back of my head and then dring to the ER to spend the day. (Don't worry. There was no brain bleed or skull fracture, just a bad headache and lots of impact body aches for a bit after. They made me wear that brace below till the scans were read but the expression says it all).

The next day I blew out the breaker panel at home, leaving half the house (including the internet router, the furnace, the stove, etc.) without power. The repair was quick -- an updated breaker panel with a surge protector. But expensive. Ouch.

I need a thyroid biopsy (that showed up in the CT scans, confirmed by an ultrasound; my bronchiectasis has been flaring and I was so deep in AFib that this week they did a cardioversion to shock my heart's electrical system back into submission. No, the year is not starting out well.

But the sun is out. (Well, some days. Some days we're back to gray!) Laying low means reading books, catching up on favorite Brit shows, snugging with a cat, and that's always a plus!

My "words" this year were "Survive" and "Escape." I'm finding my ways to get through the daily deluge of international news that seems to always be worse news than that of the day before.

As you can see from the January book post below, I've escaped best as I can with books. So far this month, I'm through a few mysteries, an interesting if disturbing non-fiction about the Gilded Age, and reading my monthly chapter in Vivian Swift's "When Wanderers Cease to Roam" (again).

I'm surviving in the company of others, lunches and dinners with friends and a jolly good Cork Poppers.

I enjoyed a beautiful orchid show with a dear friend, giving us lots of time to catch up. As you may have seen here in the last post, the blooms were dazzling, adding a very bright spot of color to a dark time.

I was pleased to stop by Rick's fundraiser -- indoor cycling on his rollers for charity.

We had a friend for dinner the other night -- good catch-up time again. I did get out to enjoy a Pink Martini concert, thanks to some a friend with an unexpected extra ticket. And they are fabulous and highly recommended. (Photo: Wikipedia.)

I'm surviving by doing what little I can to help fight our political mess by deluging my Congressional representatives and senators with calls and emails. (I'm not on the picket line yet, but I probably will be.)

And, I've been watching bunnies join the birds in the side yard!

What else? Watching good video (and sometimes not-so-good video and sometimes video I've seen many times before!) and trying to cut back on continual news coverage (which for me was pretty close to 24/7).

And I think a lot of us are praying.

And now, for something fun. Sometimes, I'm revisiting older video. I want to share one with you, if you are an "American Pie" fan. Earlier this month, blogger Tom reminded us it was "American Pie" day. Well, I missed that, but it reminded me of the wonderful lip dub that looks like the entire community of Grand Rapids, Michigan, participated in a number of years ago. (I'm especially partial to this because our Greg has his moment at 7:25 into the video.)

I hope you enjoy!

And remember, pie may NOT fix EVERYTHING. But it helps.

Next time, we're heading back to England. Coming up -- A concert, Bletchley Park, a blog meet-up, Westminster Abbey, and lots of meandering about! Put on your armchair traveling shoes and come along!

...Jeanie, thanks for this thoughtful post, I share you pain. I fell on the ice too, gravity can be a trouble thing. I hope that you are the mend. Together we will get through this mess that the country is in. But on a bright note Trumpy Dumpy wants to import eggs, so much for America First. Peace be you and be well.

Hello, Jeanie
What is happening now in our country is scary. I have a few family members who worked for the federal government and they are scared they may loose their jobs. Sorry about your fall and other illnesses, sending healing prayers and well wishes. I think our country needs more than prayers now. Take care, enjoy your day and happy weekend.

Welk, the last thing you needed was a fall on the ice. I hope that soon heals. About the rest -- I hear you!

I appreciate this post so much. Yes, it IS worth finding things to be grateful about and it does help, but it's also important not to focus so much on the good that we're overlooking the absolutely atrocious things that are happening. I'm sorry to hear about your health woes. I hope all is well now and your treatment will be effective and painless.

Take us back to England, yes please. I have been watching you tube walks through London lately , just walking , no talking. They are an escape for sure. No one seems to remember Steve Bannon's plan that grabbed the heart of the gop in a body snatcher sort of way- "Burn it to the Ground" - which is what is as promised ,being done as rapidly as a fire can spread. Burn it to the ground and then be the only ones, the mentally ill, spiritually void, psychopaths left to rule. They have all the means to survive- the rest of us are collateral.
Jeanie, I am so sorry you fell and bonked your noggin so hard! I want to srap you up in all of the wool that I have and keep you safe and comfy! I will do so in my mind! "Carry on"- is what we do. LOVE

Lovely post - and oh those egg prices there!

I am sorry to hear about the medical issues you have had. Get well soon. Please keep an eye on the head injury. That's nothing to breeze over. Keep having them look at it for a while.

We may not agree on everything, but on this we do:

"And I think a lot of us are praying."

And, of course, pie does fix everything! Wishing you well.

I try to stay apolitical on my blog, but it is getting harder and harder to do that. The White House is out of control trip right now, and the big wigs working for the White House do not inspire confidence. And along with you, I feel horrible about Ukraine. Worth to read you had a fall. I hope you feel like yourself again soon. And your health issues, I hope they also disappear. Have a great start to March. At least socially. Hugs Erika

Ohh, Jeanie, falling on the ice plus all the other health woes and stress. Whew! Please take care of yourself and leave the heavy lifting to others. Head injuries are no joke, even when there's no bleed; they can come back to bite you. So take a deep breath ...

Christine said...

Jeanie I meant those egg prices in general are high, Trader Joe's price is not bad.

Sorry to hear about your fall -- glad you're okay. But I hope your other health issues settle down and the rest of your year is better.

I heard on the news that Zelensky, Trump, and Vance had a screaming match in the Oval Office this morning as the two Americans tried to bully the Ukrainian president for his rare earth minerals. This is what US foreign policy and diplomacy has come to. Absolutely disgraceful.

Goshhh I wish I could find eggs for $3.49. $13.99 for an 18 pack here. NOT organic. I do love the bone photo. Kinda my thing. LOL I am sorry for the fall and health issues. Yes, the US as we know it, is dying fast and right before our eyes. I'm just not sure why the 2 "things" in charge are not thrown out on their butts. What doge is doing is NOT clearing out waste. It is the dismantling of America. Anyway, I am happy you joined FFO and I wish you a happy weekend.

Oh no I am so sorry to hear about your fall and your health woes. I definitely find trying to escape helps me cope too. Like you I agree that cuts need to be made but I do feel like they are being made quite haphazardly and recklessly as well. We were just reading last week about how the National parks have been effected already (some are now unable to collect funds because they have insufficient staffing-- so aren't we losing money?!).. weird how park attendance keeps going up year after year but their budgets get cut more and more.

Jeanie, I can understand the frustrations of yourself and many others. I also avoid many hot topics in my posts, not because of apathy, but knowing well the emotions that can follow. Sorry to learn of your fall and other recurring medical issues and hope that you are feeling better soon to enjoy hopefully warmer weather and no more ice.

Thanks for the great post, Jeanie. Lots of people are going through this mess and there was really no need for it to be so brutal. We feel the stress here to because of the cuts to SS and what that could mean. Sorry to hear about your health issues but with time I hope that they heal. Wishing the best for you, take care!

Sorry about your health and home issues. A little warm weather would not go amiss, but we, at least, are back to cold. Even so, the sun is building up strength.

Goodness - medical issues have been a February theme here too. I am also praying for your country - America sneezes and the world catches a cold is the saying - am hoping that the mental instability on display is vaccinated against by our political system here, quite frankly.

I have turned the news OFF. I cannot deal with the stress of the idiots running your country and mine. My cousin in Orlando has been trying to immigrate back here since '19. When she was applying to come up, she discovered both of her parents were born this side. It hasn't made the ordeal work any faster, especially with the wheels grinding to a haul during COVID.

I can't tell you how much I enjoy the Grand Rapids Lip Dup! I recognized quite a few of the locals in the video not to mention that I've always loved that song. Our city never looked better and I can't image how much time and effort went in to coordinating that production.

As for your worries and comments about what is going on in the world I agree with everything you said. I just wish the Republican party members would reach their 'step too far' and start pushing back. It this goes on for another 3 years we will never get our good standing back in the world again.

Yes, I looked into leaving the US too. Not possible for people in our income bracket. I had hoped my mother's English citizenship would help, but nope. Had to have an English FATHER,, mother's don't count :/
We hope to get over to England to visit anyway, later this year. One bright spot.

Thank you, Jeanie, for speaking up. I try to keep my blog a-political as well, but the world is in such a crazy state just now. As a Canadian, it's hard to know who are friends are. There have been so many lies told about us to Americans. I pray for wisdom and for cool heads to prevail. Alas, I think we are in for some troubled times.
Looking for the small beautiful things in life, and being kind to others, while standing up for truth, and of course, praying, is the way I am coping. Hugs to you. I hope you feel better soon.

Oh Jeanie, things certainly got off to a rough start in February. I'm happy to hear there don't appear to be any lingering issues related to your fall and I hope things get better day by day. I know that's a bit of a fantasy where the politics are concerned but we can hope and pray. I'm always amazed at how much you do despite the health challenges that come up. It's always good to get out and about and keep our minds thinking on other things. Hugs. xx

You summed this up so well. The state of affairs is so very bleak. It’s like watching a dystopian film and I’m not even exaggerating. I watched the Trump, Vance, and Zelinskyy exchange and then decided to look at Fox News to see what they were saying just to see if maybe there was a rational interpretation of the bullying of our allies. But of course there wasn’t. They quoted from various members of the Republican Party, who said this is how a deal is negotiated. It makes me sick.

February was not a great month here either, but our health was pale in comparison to what you’ve experienced! Surely March has to be better!! We’ve had a warm spell here as well and then strong winds blue in very cold temps or I should say cold in comparison to what we had been experiencing. But it looks like the sun is out and the temps will rise again this week. And that so helps my mood!!

I’m happy you didn’t suffer worse consequences from your fall. This year isn’t starting out great for many of us. Nicole was back in the hospital and I’ve had a number of episodes and tests to see what’s going on. But the state of our country is beyond terrifying. I’m really distressed about the randomness of how everything is unraveling and then the way Zelensky was treated yesterday was totally uncalled for. Repulsive!

I usually don't talk about politics on my blog, either, and had been trying to watch less news. But when I suddenly lost my funding for a few days...life was totally upended...had to reschedule medical appointments and cross my fingers...well...I was back to paying very close attention to the news.

Am trying to limit my news watching again, but when you don't know from day to day what is happening that could drastically alter your life...I feel very much like you said (am normally an annoying optimist, too).
"America is dying. And this is from a woman who is usually so optimistic about life she pisses everyone else off."

So sorry you have had the horrible health issues. Stress sets off fibro and I have been basically in a fibro flare since the election. Knew it would be bad but it is much worse than we thought faster than expected. Many people are suffering right now...mentally and physically. So many people have lost their jobs/incomes or are worried they will. It goes on and on.

Please take care of yourself, my sweet friend. I'll think of you as I escape into my British shows and cuddle with my cat. :)

I'm sorry you've had such a rough month on the health/home front. And to have all that going on in these uncertain and distressing times? Sure doesn't make anything easier.

The Pink Martini concert sounds like lots of fun, though -- I love that group!

Sending you best wishes for warm friends and good health! It's fierce out there right now, but maybe by the end of March, we'll be feeling the balm of spring. Or at least seeing one or two daffodils beginning to bloom...

What a fun video! I've always enjoyed that song, and your son did a great job! As far as our government is concerned, I always remind myself this is a temporary situation. In a few short years someone else will be in the White House and they'll take us in a completely different direction, and so on, and so on. Plus, the Bible tells us that 'the government will be upon His shoulders.' The Lord God carries this burden for us. He loves us so much and doesn't want to see us stressed or scared. Trust HIM. He's always working on your behalf, no matter who is in the White House. I hope you have a blessed weekend!

Mentally exhausted is a hard one, the mental aspect will pull you down so fast. I have had two and a half years of crap happening to mentally pull me down...but here is a hint for you, even no matter how trying the day gets, find something out of that day to make you laugh. I have found laughing helps me more than anything else. Once I was boiling eggs for Thanksgiving dinner for devil eggs and after removing them from the stove, I dumped the hot water and added cool to the pot. I went to put the pot on the counter, got too close to the edge and in the floor they went. My kitchen was covered with water and cracked eggs. I stood there looking at it and busted out laughing. That helped me to be able to clean up the mess and not let it eat at me. Hope your yr gets better soon.

You have had a really rotten time healthwise. I know it's easy to say "look after yourself" but it can be very challenging to do that sometimes. And, after years of the last government systematically dismantling everything useful and worthwhile in our country, I also know the nightmare feeling that the country is in the hands of traitors with no solutions in sight. To some extent the whole world has that now, because America's worst and most powerful enemy is now apparently Trump's best pal. But we don't know the future however much we think we do and we can only do what is in our power to deal with the situation. And, on a different tack, yes, I am one of those who always appreciates your normally upbeat outlook, so please let me say a BIG THANK YOU for "Easy Funeral Hits" which had T. and me in stitches!! If you can make us laugh so much despite a sad post like that, everyone who knows you is lucky indeed!

First off, Jeanie, I am so sorry that the year had a rather bad start for your health. That truly sucks and I hope and wish for you that you are on the mend and will recover completely. Any news on the thyroid front?
The state of this country - you summed it up so well. Like you, I usually try to stay away from mentioning politics on my blog, but there are times when we can't keep silent, otherwise we're complicit. To be honest, I feel much more as an European right now and not as an American (granted, I have the luxury of both). Of course we hear the "why don't you back to Germany" as well, but obviously this question is asked by people who have no idea what an intercontinental move looks like. We went through that once when we had a lot of help - we wouldn't have that help now, and beside all the work and organising that you need to do, it also is VERY expensive. I also think back to my family who lived through the Third Reich - they didn't leave, but tried to do what was possible during that time. That's what I'm planning to do for the immediate future (especially for our immigrant community). I haven't given up completely yet, although I'm not very optimistic. You mentioned your word of the year - usually I don't have any, but this year it is definitely "kind".
Thank you for being so honest without becoming emotional. Big hugs - Carola

Jeanie, I keep thinking, "I hope Trump knows what he's doing.,," My husband says other countries already pay tariffs to the US on goods, this isn't anything new. He has worked in imports with his warehousing background. Media is really good, too, at hyping stuff to sway the public and keep us in fear (seems to be the government/media tactic nowadays). Apparently President Obama sent WAY MORE illegal immigrants home during his term until the media got ahold of the information, then he backed off. Fox showed a chart of the past number of (I want to say through Clinton) presidents and their deportations. I saw it a week or two ago.

My personal thought is Trump is trying to quickly get other countries to pick up their fair share of taking care of the world (with USAID), and to get Canada and Mexico to police their side of the borders so less drugs get into our country which is wrecking our people from within. I don't think Trump is going to cut off USAID forever (my thoughts), he's just trying to get others to foot more of the bill. It's substantial if we are covering 48%. It's a tough decision to be president and to have to make tough choices. Like any general sending kids to war knowing full-well some will die. Certainly not something I want to ever take on (nor would I; I hate politics).

On a happier note, I love all the signs you've shared! Glad you had a nice Poppers and that Rick helped raise funds with his cycling. :)

Hugs,

I've been struggling with how to write a political post on my blog. Yours was very inspirational. Mostly, I have no words for what is happening to our country.

A head injury is no joke- please take care. Don't let your frustration make you sick-As they say- this too shall pass. there are some things that are just out of our control. I am a HUGE fan of Pink Martini- so glad you were able to go to see and hear them. A nice escape.

I do love pie.

I am so glad that you are weathering all of these health issues so well. Hopefully you have a better March!

As for the state of America - I am on the same page as you. I alternate between angry and very deeply sad. I also try to refrain from speaking about politics on my blog, simply because I want an area in my life where I can get away from it. But it does tend to dominate my thoughts right now. I am very worried about my son and what will happen as a result of this dismantling of the United States. I am worried about my mother. It is a scary, sad time to be an American.
