A Travel Break!

Before we move on to our visit to London, the Cotswolds and more, I thought I might give you a break from travel posts and fill you in on life at home since we've been back. It has been a bit of a whirlwind. We're talking art sale, ditch walks, bugs, and odd autumn happenings!

But first of all, for those of you celebrating in America, I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you have a lovely day (or did, if you're reading this after!)

As you might remember, I came home to a bedbug issue and some of you have asked for an update. The good news is nary a bite since the first exterminator treatment. (The follow-up was Monday and I have started putting things back together.) The interesting thing is that before the first treatment, the Bugman looked carefully at all the spots these bugs hide and didn't see signs of a single one. He even asked if I wanted to continue but by then everything I owned, it seemed, was in plastic bags in the garage waiting to be processed. So, yes, I did. Since then, I have been spending a good deal of time and money at the laundromat heat washing or drying clothing, throw pillows, linens, you name it. Fingers are crossed. (This is part of my garage as it was. As of Tuesday, I have almost all the bags out and the car is inside again. A good thing -- we had our first snow and there will be more to come!)

All this means I have practically zero autumn decor in the house, which isn't bothering me as much as it normally would! But I did buy this wonderful pillow after I saw one on Sarah's and Emily's beautiful blogs. And I love it. (Wish the turkey had been in stock, too!) Now, onward to Christmas!

Rick had two trade shows, one in Indiana, another in Columbus. Right before he left, two cars landed in his front and side yard when a drunk driver in an EV ran a stop sign and hit a fellow in a truck. Clean up has been tricky -- lots of glass. (The truck ended up about 15 feet from the large glass window where Rick was sitting at the time, which is a tad scary.) No one was hurt badly.

Then we had a lot of wind and a tree fell down on our street, blocking it for about 16 hours. It barely missed a car parked on the street, so a relief, but hard to see a tree go.

Our weather in November has been remarkably -- and unseasonably -- warm (until this week, but still, not bad!) I've enjoyed some nice walks to the ditch.

On my first, I saw Harry, and that made me feel good, like he was welcoming me home.

I thought I'd miss all the color, since we returned on October 25. But there was still plenty to enjoy. We've had color --  and a good deal of it in the right places -- as late as November 20. It's plain weird. I like it -- but it kind of creeps me out.

Even the garden flowers were doing well. Rick's nasturtiums are still lovely. And my geraniums are still hanging in, too! (Though with snow predictions I brought them in to winter over.)

My annual art sale took place and was great fun. Below is a look at my area, with cards and paintings and a few felties at the left. I've done this at my friend Jane's house every year for about 30 years. My art contributions have changed from painted sweatshirts in the '90s to photography, to holiday crafts, to paintings and cards. There was a long period when I used to make pumpkin rolls -- at least six dozen, which pretty much filled my fridge's freezer. People still tell me they miss them. I don't miss making them!

(By the way, my Gypsy Caravan mail site is open and you can find it on the menu bar up above! If you're interested in cards and paintings and few felties, check it out!)

And, I had some special guests one day. I looked out the window and three deer were moving from the backyard to the front, where they sweetly posed for me.

I wish I'd been able to grab the better camera and not my phone. But aren't they lovely?

We also had a fun Cork Poppers on the Day of the Dead. The theme was a wine to die for and I'll have more on that one soon!

And for those of you who asked "How did Lizzie do while you were gone?" the answer is "Great!" She's been especially clingy and sweet since my return and I'm loving that! (Apart from still thinking out of the box.)

I'm getting itchy to put up some holiday lights and finery. First things first. But I got a shot of Christmas spirit with an all-too short visit to the greens market on Saturday with my friend, Jan. It was a very quick trip and we were late arriving but it was still good fun.

Rick's mom came to visit for a week, so we did some shopping, hit a craft fair, had a visit to the history museum, and saw all the kids. One night we went down to look at our city Christmas tree. We watched the parade and tree lighting on TV, then took a drive downtown over the weekend to get a closer look.

And finally -- this was spotted.

Things that make you go "Hmmm."

I am sure it’s a great relief that the bed bug problem has been resolved. There are some visitors you just don’t want in the house. Thank goodness Rick was not harmed in the vehicles on his lawn incident. Years ago, when my daughter was just a little girl, a car smashed right into our front door. It was a nurse going home from work after one of those interminable shifts they sometimes work and she fell asleep at the wheel. I had just taken my daughter upstairs to bed. Mere seconds earlier we would have been in the hall and it might have turned out quite differently.

Your life certainly is NOT boring!! I missed your trip, will go back & read. Congratulations on your sale and on dealing with the bugs. And just on enjoying life as you do! I've been working on seasonal cards. This year I vow to send some out! I missed last year. You are tops on my list. Rita

Years ago, I lost a beloved Toyota Corolla to a drunk in a truck who hit it broadside in its parking spot -- at 2 a.m. Believe me, it was weird as could be to be awaked by two police officers at my door, telling me my car probably was totaled. It was. I'm glad Rick escaped unharmed!

I'm still having trouble with my internal calendar. I was planning a series of posts for the Sundays in Advent, and I just realized that this coming Sunday is the first! The usual week between T'giving and Advent got smooshed this year -- there's no avoiding Christmas now!

Thanks, Jeanie, for this post about goings on at home, and there have been quite a lot. Glad there were no serious injuries in the auto mishap and yes always unfortunate when a tree falls, but again good no injuries. Glad the BB problem is in the past now but what a lot of work! Wishing you and Rick and family a Happy Thanksgiving and grateful myself for blog friendships.

Happy Thanksgiving, Jeanie! I am happy the bed bug issues are behind you. You have been busy since you returned home. I hope you take time to rest and take care of yourself!

You've been very busy and enjoying life-well mostly. Glad the bedbugs are cleared up. That part didn't sound fun. Even the prep sounds like a huge job. Congrats on getting that under control. And it's a good thing Rick and the the drivers weren't horribly hurt, or Rick's home wasn't damaged (well the cars were, not good). And I almost bought that same "stuffed" turkey, but I settled for a platter. It looks great. Have a wonderful holiday. hugs-Erika

I am so sorry about the bedbugs. My friend, up north, had them. She was exhausted working on it.
You have had some adventures. Good to be busy, but this is fun.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I hadn't realized that you marketed your art so extensively, which may be the wrong word. 😊

It sounds like you returned home and hit the ground running. Whew! I was tired just thinking about it all. Glad Lizzie did well and the bugs had disappeared. What a job to clean up and put everything back away. How nice to have a visit with Rick's mom. Pumpkin rolls for the craft fair sound yummy. I am sure people miss them. The tree looks so pretty in your town. And you even had time for have wine with friends, how very special. The table of food looks delicious. And then nature both visiting you and at the ditch, what a treat. Happy, happy Thanksgiving!

So much happening! A local house here, on a corner between angled streets had several cars land in the living room, usually late on Saturday night. They put an enormous rock in front of the window, but were told by police it was dangerous (?). So now the property is fenced, sigh. But it's saved them a lot of repairs.
Your life is so busy!

Happy that your bed bugs are taken care of. What a mess!
We have had beautiful weather up until probably tomorrow when we are going to be in the 30s for a week. That's a big change. I put my Christmas decorations up today so I didn't have to do it in the freezing cold. So it looks like winter has decided to hang around and probably stay. It was having trouble making up its mind. I hope you're having a wonderful Thanksgiving day.
Love the deer. That is pretty much a daily occurrence around here.
Enjoy the rest of your day.

I was sure when I visited your blog today it would be filled with fabulous photos of all your Christmas decor. I didn't know about the bedbugs you brought home in your travels. So glad you've got that issue under control, but what a lot of work!!! You've got a lot to be thankful for this week. Let's hope your luck holds and the snow storm is not a dangerous one for any of us Michiganders.

You have been a very busy lady, Jeanie. Thank goodness you seem to have a lot of energy. I'm so glad that no one was seriously injured in the car crash outside of Rick's place. That was a scary and close call for him too. Your MIL I'm sure enjoyed her visit with you and Rick and taking in the lovely Christmas lights on the city's tree. Thanksgiving is now over for you. I hope you had a great feast. Soon enough we'll all be having the Christmas feast. Enjoy your decorating.

I am sorry to hear about your problems upon arriving home. These things are a nuisance, but I am happy to hear that the problems seem to have been solved. But, just the effort to deal with them ... hard. There seem to have been a few positive things as well to make up for them. I have enjoyed your reports from England.

I get ant bites but have never had bed bugs requiring an exterminator. Glad you fixed the problem. Your art is lovely. I treasure the one of the cottage I bought from you. It's still sitting on the cabinet next to the front door, a lovely addition to my art collection.

You have been a busy gal! Glad the bedbugs are gone and I am amazed by all you accomplished bagging everything up and doing all that washing! I know you're glad to have that behind you. I used to do home shows and sales, and I miss those days, but I know it's a lot of hard work. I know you enjoy the walks to the ditch, and how nice you got a few more in before the snow season arrives. Lovely fall photos and the Christmas tree is beautiful! Happy almost December!

Your garage would have intimidated me if it had been mine! I'm glad you're nearly through. I started an email to you and wondered what the greens market was that you talked about. In Britain "greens" usually means cabbages, brussels sprouts, etc. but it makes more sense to think of Christmas trees!

I hope all those darn bugs are gone-gone-gone!
Rick was very lucky! Goodness!
Nice to see Harry again--come to greet you.
Your sales table looks so inviting! I hope the sales went well.
Salem Witchcraft Christmas Show??? How curious is that!
Hope you have a nice Thanksgiving. :) :)

Hopefully the bedbug situation is over with. I remember once having fleas in my house and that was horrible to. Very scary about the car wreck in front of Rick's and the tree. Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Janice

Ughhh! Bedbugs. I'm always worried that we're going to come home from traveling with a bedbug. What a lot of trouble to pack up everything and wash and dry so many things, Jeanie! I say, better to be safe than sorry. I would love to see your art booth, and I'm sure if I had tasted your pumpkin muffins, Jeanie, I'd miss them too. It sounds like you've been having fun! All the best to you!

Oh Jeanie, I'm so glad you still have some Autumn left in the trees for you to enjoy. I loved your post today, cause I got to see the happenings on your life since you've been back. Craft fairs are so much fun, and I always find a goody or two when I go. Sorry to hear that tree fell down on your street. We had something similar happen, and we lost power for half a day. I look forward to seeing some of your snow you got. That's a lot of work you have to do in the garage, but you are going through it little by little, and that's great.

Happy December Jeaniie. I so love your "this and that" posts.

So good to hear the bug issue seems to be resolved! You have certainly been busy. You must be exhausted.

I'm glad the bug issue was resolved but what a hassle! With how much I travel, I am always a bit paranoid that I will pick up bed bugs! I hope I am not jinxing myself by saying that!

Our fall colors did not last quite as long as yours did but later than usual. We had such a nice fall and then it came to a screeching hult this week as the weather was horrifically cold with sub-0 feels like temps. BLEH. We got a coating of snow last night which the boys were thrilled about. It will warm up this week thank goodness. I'm not ready for super cold temps! I mean, I never am but it just feels too early for that!

Wow, that accident so close to his house must have been so scary!
The bedbugs are so annoying and a pain to deal with. Also, I love the pictures with the animals, so cute.

THe car crash is terrifying - so lucky no one was hurt! I don't get drunk drivers-It's so easy to get an uber or plan your way if you want to drink. The deer are lovely! #Talkaboutittuesday

So much happening since you've returned - good and bad! Bed bugs - ugh! Reminds me of the days when the kids were little and would bring home head lice. That crash sounds scary and too close to home. I don't know how you find the time to do all that you do - paint, travel, entertain, track down Harry (lol!). You are truly amazing! The green market is something I've never seen - so cool - and I love the tree all lit up against the beautiful building. And the deer - so pretty! Enjoy those kitty snuggles and hope you find some time to get your decorating done. I'm just starting...seems I'm perpetually behind! x K
