A Quick Blogging Survey

This won't apply to those of you who blog through Word Press, but I do have a question about that too, so I hope you'll stick with me!

So many of us have been dancing through "New Blogger" -- or trying. But I'm a little curious about who we are and some of the issues -- and I have a couple of other concerns too. So, please answer what you can in the comments.

1) Do you know if Legacy goes away entirely OR if we only have until a given date (I've seen late August and Sept. 1, both) to choose which was we go in the future. (I have no idea.)

2) What is your age or age range -- a) Under 30  b) 30-40  c)41-50  d) 51-60 e) over 60

3) Do you monetize?

4) Do you prepare your posts on a laptop, tablet, phone or mix of any of these?

5) If you are using New Blogger, what problems are you currently having. These are mine. Familiar? Others?

I don't like that then you return it automatically goes to a double space (which looks bad for a quote or poem.) Is there a way to adjust this? Can't figure it out.

I don't like how the new html looks -- it's all bunched together and if you have to go in to fix something up, it's almost impossible to find and more impossible to figure out how to get rid of that extra space that looks fine on the edit page.

I don't like that you can't access spam comments later (in case you goof or want to check up on a name that you put there.

I'm not fond of (but can work with) how the icons for deleting, etc., don't show up unless you mouse over them. What was wrong with the words Delete, View, etc.

Doing tag/labels is clunkier than before.

Has anyone visited the settings page? I think it is more complicated to access easily.

I don't like that you can't just call up your drafts.

I don't like that if you want to find a post from ten years ago you have to keep adding more pages into a single list on the screen till you get to that date (versus the page 1, 2, 3, etc. at the top of old blogger, so you can first start looking near the end of the list.)

I do like the look  of the "post" page with the first photo of the post.

I'm curious as to what is odd that I haven't discovered yet. I also have a sneaking suspicion that a significant number of bloggers on free blogger, especially those who do not monetize, are of a certain age, like me. And many of us aren't big on change, especially if we don't see it making a positive difference.

If you are on Word Press - Do you pay? Do you monetize? If you have worked on both, how user friendly is the interface compared to blogger?

Please tell me your issues -- I've heard of photo upload issues, comment issues and more.

And thanks!

Jeanie, I am a WordPress user and use laptop and IPad to work on a post. I do pay for WP. Good luck on all the issues, I constantly have issues.

I hate the new blogger platform. I tried to use it but then my posts wouldn’t show up in places like feedly whether I scheduled them or automatically posted them. I tried several different things and nothing worked so I gave up and went back to the old blogger platform. I hope we aren’t all forced to convert!!

I have chosen to stay with the old version. I am a person who had difficulty coping with change. I did try it for a bit and quickly reverted back. If I find that I cannot keep it as is, then I will be looking for another place to blog! xoxo

Hi Jeanie - I'm in the 51 - 60 age group, no I don't monetize, on Blogger, I write on a laptop.
I admit that I haven't done anything too fancy yet, just my regular posting. I do not like how when you click on a blog to read from your list, you have an intermediary step to get there. Yes, I want to go to that site... because I just clicked on it!
Because I haven't done anything monumentally different, I haven't encountered anything that was too beyond my means. I had to fiddle to figure out what to use to create a link to a the source of an image I used.
I did have an annoying time of trying to put images of my own photos in from my documents. It just automatically stuck them all in my blog, instead of letting me choose when and where I wanted to put them. I then had difficulty figuring out how to delete them from my blog, but I did manage eventually. I'm curious to see what other bloggers have been doing. -Jenn

I pay WordPress $96 per year for 13 GB of space. When that is used up, I will have to delete old photos in my media library so I can post new photos. If I don't do that, then I will have to pay $300 per year for 187 more GB space. I wish I had chosen Blogger to begin with, as it is free for most bloggers.

The Legacy blogger will be going away soon according to Blogger. There are still a lot of things which need improving, but it has already improved since the beginnings a couple of months ago. Apart from that, I can work 'normally' with it now. Have a great day, hugs, Valerie

3) Do you monetize?
No ma'am

4) Do you prepare your posts on a laptop, tablet, phone or mix of any of these?
I use all but usually a tablet.

5) If you are using New Blogger, what problems are you currently having. These are mine. Familiar? Others?
Impossible to put pictures where you really want them. Sometimes the drop down menu is situated so that I cannot access my READING LIST. I've had trouble with my response to others blogs getting lost.

I don't like it much but I will keep it. I try not to dig my heels into the ground as much as I used to and figure that eventually this will get easier.

Hi Jeanie, I am over 60, and have no idea if Legacy goes away or not. No one seems to know for certain. I use a laptop and I don't monetise. Mostly I am having problems with photos and centering and sizing. I may not have had all your issues because I have given up and not got that far! I have not blogged in a month now.

I do have a W/P account, but struggle with that too, plus I am always being pestered to upgrade my account. I've now bought W/P for Dummies as I may switch platforms.

Hope this helps

Wow! A lot of questions. I am still on Blogger, but talked to one friend that switched to Word Press, which she is happy about and said it worked well to migrate her blog over to there.
I tried the new for a while, but switched by to the old. Now I may go back as there are new problems with the old way. My last post I could format the type the way I like in the center. Yes, on the new format you can access drafts, but it took me awhile to find it. On posts there is a little down arrow and if you click on that it gives you a list of the drafts. I so my posting on my desktop. I am in the over 60 group. Also don't like that sometimes I can only download one picture at a time and sometimes I can. I do wish in both formats they offered more font choices. OK, can't remember your other questions right now. Hugs!

I haven't been using blogger (old or new) much at all lately, but one thing I noticed (about the new version, I think), is that on the far left of the composing toolbar, there's a pencil icon that you can click to get to an HTML editor.

In this view, you can change the ending paragraph tags that give you the double returns to
tags that give you a single line break.

It's definitely not as easy to use as a WYSIWYG editor, but it does offer some extra control over the appearance of your text. (But only *some* extra control: Blogger does not support a full range of HTML tags.)

I am a big 56 and do not like change at all. I do not have adds on my blog and feel that it was easier to post this week. Last week was a disaster with blue underlined text between photos. Still can't post my photos in order but today was better than last Saturday. Stay safe.

I can't answer most of your questions because I have never got to grips with old blogger. I'm nearly 70, don't pay for my blog and don't earn money from it. I ought to spend more time learning about it.

Regina said...

I will try to answers as best I can. As far as I know Legacy goes away either later this month or very early September. Everyone's blog will automatically be changed to new Blogger. I'm in the 51-60 age range and I don't monetize. I usually write posts on my tablet and I hate the new blogger.
I don't get why when I click on a blog in my feed it takes me to a page that asks if I wanted to go to the blog or go back to previous page ( which doesn't work anyway). Well duh if I didn't want to read posts I wouldn't click on it. I don't like the double space thing and there is just a whole mess of things I don't like.
I have an account on Wordpress because I couldn't leave comments on some blogs without a WordPress account.
I really don't want to switch to Wordpress because it's too much of a pain for me and my readers.
Anyway, I like the old version better but Blogger will probably change again.

I believe "legacy" will go away. Having worked in software for decades, I know that maintaining two versions is really unlikely, over time.

I do not "monetize."

Desktop.

Agree that I DO like the pics on the list of posts.

I don't like the way tags are done (when you have a long list it takes longer to find them).

I'm not crazy about the way the HTML looks, either.

---

I have always taken the position that I am getting a lot more than I pay for. :-) It's free; I've always enjoyed it. What I think about how it works is pretty much irrelevant. (Remembering times when it was actually broken, and I told them about it, over and over, and got no response.)

Even software I pay for changes in ways I don't like. :-/

I am using Instagram a lot more than my blog these days. It's much harder to tell a story on IG, which is its main downside, for me. But I get a lot more attention and comments there than I have EVER gotten here.

Maybe that's just me.

I have been using the new version since they introduced it and while I am not entirely thrilled with it I don't utterly despair of it as many seem to do. Some have made the point that it's free so perhaps we just need to suck up and use it, quit kvetching, and hope that improvements will be made.

When I first started blogging 12+ years ago, I was on Blogspot, but only for a few months, then I switched to Wordpress. I found it more user-friendly. And I never switched back. So for years I've been using the same Theme. Then I heard people telling me they see ads on my site and I didn't like that, cause I didn't have control as to what ads came on my blog. So I pay for a 'Personal Version', yes, I pay to make sure there's no ads on my blog. Forgot how much, maybe around $5 a month.

Then about a month ago I was told by Wordpress my Theme was too old and would not support new features like block blogging. So I changed it to a more updated one, which is the one I'm using now. First I was apprehensive about the new blogging method (using 'blocks'), but after a month or two now, I'm getting the hang of it, and it's more contemporary looking and I can do more things with it. Although I'm still exploring.

My take is: don't be afraid to change to a newer version. Also, I'm happy with Wordpress, especially the HELP and support they give me (when I was switching to a new Theme.) We used chat, so it's immediate assistance, and they're very patient with me. That I really appreciate.

The new format wouldn't upload my photo. I am planning to leave Blogger. I read Sept. 1 is the deadline for the current format. I'm thinking I'll do one more post with a sort of summary review. I'm sad about it, it's been a rich experience, especially connecting with people like you. And actually meeting some Bloggers live. It's opened up some doors for me locally. I wouldn't mind change if it were user friendly.

Perhaps it's time for a website for me where some one local can help me...

I'm glad you opened the discussion. We can be so isolated here if we don't communicate.

I haven't switched over to the new blogger yet. So many people are not happy with it. I'm just waiting until I have to switch over and see how it goes. But most of us don't have the time or energy to learn a new program. To answer some of your questions.....

My age range is 51-60.

I prepare my posts on my computer.

And you're right, I'm not big on change if it's not a positive one. : )

I hope you find the answers you're looking for, Jeanie.

Jeanie, I'm in the over 60 group and have made a few posts with the new blogger platform. It was difficult at first, but I am now finding it easier. I don't post that often but when I do it is usually on my laptop or desktop computer. I personally don't like changes and find them difficult. I get used to a certain platform and them it changes--Yikes. I do not have ads on my blog.

Before I answer your blogger questions let me answer the question about blueberries versus huckleberries. Everything I've read doesn't seem to answer anything. I guess I need more botany. Here's what I don't like about the new blogger. It takes forever to post comments as you have to go through each one individually. Posting topics on the sidebar for each post isn't smooth. The whole format doesn't always work smoothly. But getting better, maybe. I don't monetize, but I have considered it. I just find the adds in people's blogs a bit annoying when you try to read, but making some cash always sounds appealing. Hope that answers your questions. I may think of more answers another moment.

I pay for my WordPress account - I switched from Blogger about eight years ago because at the time they seemed to ignore anyone who didn't have GooglePlus. I was tired of everything being Google, and fighting with the program.

WordPress recently made big changes that made lots of its users mad, but I was able to keep my Classic Editor. I am really glad I switched, and always have been. I don't monetize.

1) It´s for free, they can do what they want, but I think they´ll be fair to us.
2) 48
3) no
4) no! I´m old!!! 😁
5) Once you worked HTML it sticks! What I hate: I can add pics only in editor-mode, so I have to switch back and forth and that darn code you did not add is - as you say - icky!!!

What I really thought was dumb: They ask for comments on their new stuff and I didn´t find anything to do that!!!
What??? How???

What I think is strange, too.... "my age group" left blogging, it´s a tad older or very much younger ones.

As you know, I'm on WordPress. Like Arti, I began with Blogger, came to hate it, changed to WP, and have been happy since.

I do pay for the no-ads feature, and for a custom URL on Lagniappe, which also provides more storage space than I'll ever use. WP is rolling out a new editor, which I'm now using on Lagniappe and soon will switch to on The Task At Hand. I thought it was complicated at first, but I've begun adapting, and I think it will be fine.

From what I've read about Blogger from you and others, there's no way I would touch the platform. All of the things you list as being negatives are no issue at all on WP -- it's quite user friendly, and the support is stellar.

Jeanie, I don't like change! I switched over to the new format to just check it out. I've used it to see what the differences are and it's not really challenging once you are familiar with the changes. I prefer the old way and switched back but I know what to expect when the change is made. My understanding is the new format is default for bloggers but the legacy interface will still be optionally available for now.

I do like the look of the "post" page with the first photo of the post.

I don't know if blogging is headed the way of the dodo. I'm so glad a few of these sharing places still exist but many have disappeared!

Thanks for the questions. Sylvia D.

Hi Jeanie, great idea for this post. I have read most of the comments and see different problems from different folks. I first tried out new blogger when they first announced it. Couldn't do a thing!! Then tried it again and thought whoa, I guess I'm getting smarter because it seemed easier to me. However, I don't do anything fancy. I find that setting up in the center section is how I like to print, so that is easy. I did put up a pic that I didn't want and could not get rid of it as there is no delete place like before. Finally figured out to click on photo (turns blue) and then hit delete button on computer. That worked. The setting page is way different so I try not to mess with that.I kind of got off track here. It says the old blogger goes away come Sept., but then it said July, I believe, in the first. So who knows.I changed the color of my background and had to revert back to the legacy to do it, couldn't figure out on new one. My age is over 60------way over! I do not monetize, and have a sneaking suspicion that this is all geared to the one's who make money. Isn't everything in life? I only use my PC to post and one problem I do not like, and haven't figured out how to fix (if there is a way) is when you set up your post, and you want to link up to a party at the end, if that particular party hasn't come on line yet you can't do it. Am I reading this wrong or is that the case? I hope we all can get some answers, as the old saying goes, if it's not broke don't fix it!! What the Hay!!..Stay well..xxoJudy

I also have no idea but I really hope they keep it as a choice because not everyone is easily or willing to move to the new environment.

2) What is your age or age range -- b) 30-40

3) Do you monetize? - I do not :)

4) Do you prepare your posts on a laptop, tablet, phone or mix of any of these? I prepare them using my laptop .

5) If you are using New Blogger, what problems are you currently having? one of the problems is when using it on writing some edits or updates on my published posts. Sometimes the changes does not save on mobile unlike before

Rita C at Panoply said...

Similar to you in age and that I don't monetize, my biggest complaint so far has been in adding photos. If you upload multiple photos and don't drop them into your post all at once (I like to add my photos at one time, but change my mind when drafting a post as to where I want to place them quite frequently), you have to scroll through your entire blog album to get back to the picture you want to add. I haven't found an easier way yet. I haven't fooled with html yet, so can't comment on that. I had a problem with line spacing also. And I don't like the way you have to edit links. I think I saw the latest legacy date as Sept 1, although that's pushed back from the original date of June 30 which they originally called for. It's probably due to complaints and issues expressed on their forum. I would encourage you to get on there and express yourself too. I generally create posts on my desktop, do limited editing on my phone.

Hi Jeanie

Blogger seems to be making these changes to make blogging easier from a cell phone, which is probably something young people want to do.

To answer your questions:
1) Yes, Legacy will go away permanently either end of August or beginning of September --they are doing it slowly so it may be different end dates from some
2) 65 plus
3) yes
4)laptop
5) I am having lots of glitches with photos not justifying the center properly and had to revert to the legacy editor to fix that and I really don't care for the new way to download from albums on Google photos--it takes longer to search for them.

My thoughts on the change are that Blogger changed in the past and eventually we all adjusted, and the ones that couldn't adjust stopped blogging altogether or moved to a new blog platform. I don't want to pay for WP or another platform so I'll stick with Blogger and muddle through the best I can and hope they fix all the bugs in the new editor.

There are a couple of groups on Facebook for Blogger users where one can join and ask questions of those who are whizzes at using HTML etc. -- a good one is KimSix Blogger Support (For Bloggers on Blogger)
and another is Blogger On Blogspot
They are helpful!

Jeanie, this is an interesting topic. I read all the comments and was wondering what am I doing wrong that I don't have much reason to complain about the new Blogger.
So - I'm 60, not the youngest chick on the block (or blog?) anymore, I have been blogging since 2010 and don't monetize. I prepare my posts on a desk top, but might change to laptop some time in the future (maybe that's more bothersome?). I don't really have problems - some things are just a bit unusual. What I don't like is how to do the labels and that the comments after being published no longer turn up in my email. I loved to reply to comments from my email. Old posts I usually find through my blog archive in the sidebar.
I do believe that the old Blogger will eventually disappear. I can't imagine they will bother maintaining both.

I'll take your survey. I hate the new blogger. I never got into G+ and hated that. I couldn't access any G+ blogs unless I joined, which I never did. It finally went away, but I fear this NEW blogger may be here to stay. I only have a desktop and will be using the old legacy blogger to schedule posts as long as I can. My posts are heavy with photos, so I wonder how it will work in the new blogger. Not ready to learn, since I just got back online after being without the internet for nine days. I'll try to stop by later and see what I've missed while I was without my internet. Thanks for stopping by while I was offline, too.

1. According to the message on my dashboard, it goes away on August 24th 2020.

2. I'm 35.

3. No. Tried it, nothing came of it, they said they'd close my account if it didn't start making money soon, it didn't, they closed it, I didn't care.

4. Desktop computer. It's always been difficult via the phone or tablet, and is even more so with the new Blogger.

5. I've noticed these issues:
*Like you I've noticed the issue with html. Since I used to sort the layout and everything using html, this is a big problem for me, because I no longer can (it's too jumbled together for me to keep track of what's where). So now I have to hope my layouts are OK using the compose mode. Even adding links is now a headache, because it was much easier for me to type in the html coding than it is for me to add links the other way. And don't even get me started on getting photos where I want them in posts.
*Sorting the labels and date for scheduling isn't as easy, and I've even sometimes had to save and refresh my draft post before I can know for sure the date I scheduled the post for is the date it's going to go up.
*That dropdown menu so you can preview or save the post... Hate it! Dropdown menus and screenreaders don't get on well.
*The thing you mentioned where you have to keep scrolling to see older posts instead of having pages to navigate... Hate that too.

Found the place where you can see your drafts and access them easily. On the dashboard click on 'post's then click the the tiny arrow on the top which will bring a drop down list where 'drafts' is one of the choices to click next.

1) I've heard the ability to revert to "legacy blogger" will go away, but the date keeps getting pushed back.

2) over 60

3) no

4) laptop

5) I tried new blogger, but I schedule posts _really_ far in advance and legacy blogger lets me access posts by page instead of having to scroll down forever to hunt for them as new blogger has it set up. I see you don't like that either. Those page numbers are a real necessity for me if I'm going to keep using Blogger at all.

I've heard the changes they made were to make it easier for people who use blogger on mobile devices. I have a Wordpress account in my blog's name and will be taking another look at it (it's been a while) if blogger retires the legacy format.

Jeanie, while I consider myself to be new at this entire arena, it seems as though I will never catch up. I am a Word Press user and I do pay. Word Press as issues that seem difficult for me to work around - line spacing, photos. I have had issues with photos disappearing.

I have tried the new form 3 times. Once was way back in June, with little success and enjoyment. 2nd time was about the same, as was the 3rd time. So now I am back with legacy. HOpefully, it hangs around.

Hi Jeannie, I use a lap-top and am in the over 60 crowd. I was away from the blog for a while and was very surprised to come back and see all the changes! I haven't seemed to have any trouble so far except how to post comments that haven't been published yet. I don't like that you can't download a bunch of photos and then post them one at a time. As soon as you post one, they all go away! Or maybe I just did something wrong, who knows. Pretty clueless, here, but I muddle through! Have to take some time to figure it all out. I don't monetize and I've been blogging since 2011. I'm going to stick with it, I guess. Hope you are having a good summer, my dear. Hugs xo Karen

I'm way over 60 and rarely monetize. I've pretty much switched over to the new platform and have many of the same issues. I'm especially unhappy with labels and spacing, but have learned to deal with just about all of the other quirks. I'm not sure I like how my posts look, but any smaller type is illegible. I've enjoyed looking over these comments and have a few ideas I will be trying out. Thanks all!

I'm in my 50's ~ Paying for Wordpress because I thought I was going to sell on the account rather then on Ebay, but I haven't taken the time to figure out how. I was able to transfer the info from blogger fairly easily, but I haven't spent much time figuring out the site or using it to it's full potential. I don't like ads on peoples sites so I wouldn't add it to mine I don't think

I've noticed a few people saying they don't want to move to WP because they don't want to pay. There's no need to pay, unless you have specific issues, like a desire to monetize your blog, or you're posting gazillions of photos. The free version (which I use for The Task at Hand) provides 6 GB of storage, and I've only used a tiny fraction of that after ten years. Some people don't crop/resize their photos before posting on the blog, and that eats up space fast. I never post anything larger than 2100xwhatever, and usually stick with 1600 x 1100 or so. It makes a difference.

Also: I don't monetize and never will. It's worth the $30/year to keep the ads away. There are a number of blogs I simply stopped reading because the presence of the ads was so irritating. One or two's ok, but when they're scattered all around, it's not.

Another thought: you mentioned trying to find posts. The WP editor is a gem. You can sort posts by published/draft, and search either one by date, topic, or keyword. If you think, "Didn't a post about lilies one time?" you can find it in a flash. Or, if I want to bring up all my Christmas posts, I can do it.

Also: in the WP editor, you have the ability to post verse properly -- however you like. You also can paste from text, so if you want to replicate the form from another source, you can do that.

Spam comments always are available, until you delete them yourself. Also, tags and categories are easily accessible, both through settings and for individual posts.

I know, I know -- I sound like an evangelist. But there's so much to love about WP, and with the new editor they've provided, it will be even better. (This, from a naturally resistant to change sort!)

If you ever want, I can send screenshots of some of the pages so you can see what things look like 'inside' WP.

Well Jeanie, changes are sometimes good but they can also be a pain.
Legacy will be going away period. people need to start using it.They keep changing the date because they are constantly tweaking it.
2) over 60 group.

3) Do you monetize? yes

4)I use a PC

5) If you are using New Blogger, what problems are you currently having.
Blogger has changed many items. The last time I wrote a post about the new changes, they have switched the html and compose to the left.
The labels are terrible. It take forever to load. The old version was simple.
I loved they added the table, which means you can post photos side by side or collages. Since I wrote my post, they have eliminated it.

The settings are all different. You have to find your way through it all. The email post notification is now an invite.

It would be better if people learned to resize their photos before uploading them. Better for loading time and also taking up your space on Blogger.

It is more responsive and better for seo. people are always saying WP is better. You can make big money on Blogger, a free platform. I know many bloggers using Blogger and making 6 figures. WP can be easily hacked, just as secure as Blogger.

I am trying to stay on top of these changes, letting my readers know what is new and how to navigate. I design blogs and fix problems. My latest is helping two bloggers get their blogs back.

Happy to pipe in here.

Jeanie, I tried it a while back and found it needlessly complicated, all cons and no pros, and promptly switched back to legacy. Will have to try again, though, eventually because I have no desire to switch to another platform. They have their own difficulties and are not as user-friendly as Blogger is, or at least WAS. I do all my blogging on my desktop computer.

1) Do you know if Legacy goes away entirely OR if we only have until a given date (I've seen late August and Sept. 1, both) to choose which was we go in the future. (I have no idea.)
I chose to stay with new blogger because legacy will soon be gone so I might as well learn it now.
2) What is your age or age range -- a) Under 30 b) 30-40 c)41-50 d) 51-60 e) over 60
I am 66

3) Do you monetize?
no

4) Do you prepare your posts on a laptop, tablet, phone or mix of any of these?

laptop

5) If you are using New Blogger, what problems are you currently having. These are mine. Familiar? Others?

I have been really trying to become familiar with it and many things seem easier. I don't mind change if it helps something work better.

I don't like the plus and minus button for photos yet. I was just fine with the s,m,l,xl option.

I thought changing the backgrounds and font colors was a lot harder to navigate. But not only because everything moved... it was seriously more cumbersome to see the changes happening

I am having issues with photos... placing them, uploading, etc. I was not loving Legacy's photo setup either, though. It could be me. I have not enjoyed windows ten photo setup either

I think it would be appropriate for blogger to offer a heads up on changes or even some YouTube courses to help bloggers transition

Thanks for this survey. I hope to learn to appreciate the new Blogger. It would help me to know why the change was made. I just work better if I know the rationale... usually

I use wordpress now and monetize. They are always changing things up too. Sometimes the change is better, but sometimes I don't like things about it. Good luck with your blogging journey!

Sorry I'm late answering. I've had a busy Summer, lots of visitors etc.
I enjoyed reading all your comments on this survey and find out that I'm not alone with disappointment in change.
2) over 60 age group
3)I don't monetize
4)laptop
5) I didn't like the double space and it took sometime to figure out how to delete. I still have to work on it.
I've been blogging less since the change.
