Early Autumn at the Ditch

After a cool summer and boatloads of rain, we're having some nice warm, sunny days! Time to head toward the ditch and check out early signs of autumn.

These pix were taken on back-to-back days, so you may notice some lighting differences.

The first day brought early changes in leaves.

And yes, they are falling.

Nonetheless, it's pretty ravishing at times!

Harry was out. First he was fishing.

Then he went to sit atop the nesting house in the middle of the big pond.

I also noticed this bird and wasn't sure what it was.

When Kate and I went out walking the second day, the bird was back in the same spot he was before. Here are a couple other pix. We're thinking bittern or green heron.

But there was more action that water birds! Harry was back and so were some other friends!

This beautiful deer was sampling the large pond.

Pretty soon she and her young one made the trek across.

And found more of the same on the other side.

The baby is getting pretty big -- not as big as mom, but definitely growing up!

We know they went over to a different pond -- we actually caught a glimpse of three deer but it was hard to get a photo through the foliage.

But what a wonderful sighting on a beautiful afternoon! More autumn to come. It's a time of year I love -- but what's after? Not so much!

Lovely photos. Late summer/early fall is the best time of the year.

I love your visits to the pond and a hello to mister Harry. I was guessing the heron for the other bird. Must ask my bird watching husband to take a look and he would know.

Those first few pictures were spectacular of the color.

Jeanie, your first photo is so reminiscent of a Monet Painting!

Lovely photos. I do think that's a juvenile or first-year green heron. I'm curious about the nesting box in the middle of the water. What creature is that meant for? I've never seen such a thing down here.

Beautiful late summer pictures. The deer looked like she was posing for you in some of the photos.

Green-Backed Heron is what my bird watching husband says. He looked it up in his bird book.

Jeanie,
These pics are beautiful and the colors are so vibrant. It makes me miss the wetlands at Dad's. It's amazing how much wildlife can be attracted if you have a little water. I love the one of the yellow leaf in the water.

AND
the blue water in the first couple of photos is almost surreal ♥
Happy September dear Jeanie

What a beautiful place. I drank in the beauty and really wished I were there. The portraits of Harry are quite nice. I wonder what he would think of the nice work you do when you make him your subject.

I am not ready for autumn, but it is here.

I, too, love fall. The photos you shared are beautiful! I love seeing the changing leaves and of course the wild life photos are fun. I always love seeing what Harry is up to, and the deer pics are so serene and beautiful. The leaves are slowly starting to change here. I love this time of year, but this year I am not quite ready for it. I think I feel this way because our summer was not as hot/humid as it usually is so I am not sick of it like I have been in the past! But ready or not, fall is coming so I will try to soak it up and enjoy the mild temps as I, too, know what is coming next :/

I love your photos and I love the fall. I am not a big fan of the summer, because for some years our summers are hot but very sultry and the high humidity level is hitting me.In former times we had hot but dry summers and then the heat was bearable.
