Remembering Most Obsessively

A place belongs forever to whoever claims it the hardest, remembers it most obsessively, wrenches it from itself, shapes it, renders it, loves it so radically that he remakes it in his own image.

Joan Didion

I've been thinking a lot about the cottage lately. I tend to do that rather often when the temperatures drop into single digits and the ground turns white. In another six months I will be back up north, painting on my porch, swimming every day in the lake. For now, I look back on other times.

My mom (front left) and her sisters at the lake. c. 1929/1930.

The Didion quote touches me because it hits, so spot on, how I feel about the cottages up north -- and when I say cottages, I mean both the one I live in now and the one down the road in which my cousins live, where I grew up in my younger summers and where my mother and her sisters spent time every summer from the time they were children.

Mom (front left) with her sisters and neighbor kids on the beach.)

My grandfather bought the family cottage in 1923. It will be 100 years this summer of our family spending chunks of the summer in Michigan's north. Over the years the town has changed, going "faux Alpine," and there are now paved roads on the paths where my mother and her sisters used to walk along a two-track road to meet my grandfather when he came north for the weekend. Power boats have replaced rowboats and it's a lot louder.

The X and line on this postcard written by my grandmother points to the cottage.

But there are wonderful moments then and now and I do remember them obsessively -- both those of the old cottage and those of the new. I recall those early days (just barely) when my cousin David and I were little, in awe of the fish my dad would catch.

Then along came his sisters. Sand pies "served" on the break wall, early unsuccessful attempts (and later successful ones) at water skiing. Walking to the swamp and catching tadpoles. Meals at the long dining table in the old cottage. Long days swimming in the clean Otsego Lake water and playing on the beach. We had few rules (play nice, respect the water) and for me, I had -- for a short time, at least -- a "brother" and two sisters.

When I was 13, my parents bought a cottage down the road, the one we have today. It was there that the four of us kids would spend hours on the dock fishing (and later, as many hours baking on beach towels in the sun.)

It's the place where I most often think of my dad. I don't know how many hours he pulled the four us on water skis, but it was plenty. And for all those hours, there were more spent fishing.

We, of course, were the beneficiaries of his success! My mom was quite expert in baking a big bass!

We were back and forth between the cottages every day all summer, staying north with our moms while the dads came on weekends and vacations.

There are many specific memories I hold... visits from friends...

... card games on the porch that lasted well into the evening ...

... and then there was the year I dropped my cousin's diamond ring in the lake. (Let me rephrase that. "Drop" implies intention. I was holding it for her on my finger when it slipped off into the water when I threw her the ski rope.) After bringing in divers to search the area (I personally think they found it), we started pumping out the lake, with a screen frame with a tarp beneath. I think she still holds a grudge. I certainly still feel the guilt!

We drew quite a crowd, pawing through the debris for a bright shiny object.

My original s cottage has seen new generations experience the lake. My cousins brought their children north for vacations...

...where they dug in the sand and played in the water, as we did long before.

Now, the next generation -- the fourth generation of our family -- is experiencing summer days at the lake.

And, I'm sharing my spot, too. And those are moments I treasure.

From one beloved place...

.... to another....

From sunsets ...

 ... to storm clouds...

This is the place of my heart.

Let the countdown to summer begin.

I love this little journey with you to the important cottages in your family and the days you treasure now as memories plus still making new memories. It reminds me of all the camping trips my family took.

Such a wonderful, happy first photo, oh, all of them!
It must´ve been wonderful times!
Here, it was the Baltic Sea some summers and always only our Mom, Bro and me. Rather lonely, and whilst Mom relaxed I had to have an eye on my 5 1/2 years younger Brother.
But there was the ocean at least!
My Father always stayed at home working - your post made me so happy... until... uh!

That ring!!! Oh, boy!!! We were on our friend´s motor-boat in Perth 2013, newly wed and my ring had men´s size, so I the whole time had to make a fist to not lose it, LOL
Bro made it smaller but now in winter it´s too big again... careful!! (It´s titanium, Bro won´t go at that no more).

Oh, Jeanie, what a wonderful post!!! You leave me all warm and happy! Thank you!

You look like your Mom and your Aunts!

This was a delight to read, Jeanie. I like to remember the old days too, also in Michigan! It's Lake Huron for me (pointing to thumb).

Do you think the divers swiped the ring?

What a great tribute to a place you love and where you have such a long history. Maybe you could get an underwater metal detector and go searching for that ring. It's probably still down there!

The past serves as a touchstone for me, and future plans and possibilities can intrigue me, but I tend to be more focused on the present. That said, you certainly have a rich history and rich memories; it makes sense to me that you'd often return to them -- especially when snow-and-housebound in winter! Besides -- what's not to love about such a pleasant cottage, and the chance to use it as a home base for some of your favorite activities? Spring and summer will be here soon!

This is a gorgeous reflection on a place that means so much to you! I grew up going to a small cottage that was owned by my grandfather and his brothers. I spent many summer weekends there with my dad's side of the family so my cousins were almost like sisters and certainly best friends. The cottage got torn down years ago and my dad's brother built a home there. We still gather there on the 4th of July although I haven't been home for the 4th since 2019... it's kind of overwhelming for me and Phil so we prefer to go when it's quieter.

I get a little sad thinking about how my kids won't have the cousin experience that I did growing up. My cousins were definitely my first friends. My boys are so much younger than most of their cousins. They do get doted on when they see them, but since my siblings are all so spread out, we don't get together all that often. My younger sister's daughter is close in age to Will and she has another one the way this summer, so they will have a couple of cousins close in age. And Abby and her husband plan to move from AZ to the Midwest in a few years so eventually we'll hopefully see her and her kids on a regular basis. But it's just a very different world from what I grew up with... but we have "found family" here in Minneapolis so they still have a cohort of kids that they will grow up with.

Jeanie, this was a wonderful and nostalgic look back on your family's shared summer times at the lake. Growing up, my family only gathered together for sometime barbecues, usually at my parent's home, as they had the largest backyard. Today, my few cousins hardly keep in contact now that all the adults have passed on, so it was wonderful to see your happy gatherings. Too bad about the loss of your cousins's ring and we all now it just an unfortunate accident, hopefully she does as well by now.

I envy you and your generational cottages. I have many fond memories of growing up on my dad's lake place but we have no properties that have been passed down through the generations.

The old photos are fun Jeanie. And the memories must be long at the lake since you've been going there all your life. It's nice to have that long term connection. And that diamond ring story is horrifying. I would have been in tears and feeling rotten for days. I think it must be the time of winter when being cooped in is starting to get to us all. At least it is for me. I hope your week is going well, and thanks for this interesting read too. It feels a little more summery already. hugs-Erika

Oh my goodness, Jeanie. I don't see you EVER selling this place, it holds so much history of your life. And I absolutely love the fact that you have that history in photos and now with this recap. 100 years of family traditions - wow! That is simply amazing. I also love that while the surroundings have changed, your cottage basically remains a constant, unchanged icon!

Jeanie, what beautiful memories you have of the lake. I absolutely loved this post, and as for me, I think passionately about the past, so I chucked at your title, "remembering most obsessively." You had such good times with your cousins, and I LOVE that photo of you and your cousin looking with wonder at the fish your dad caught. Water skiing? I've always wanted to try it, but never did. That photo of your dad fishing is a treasure, and how good of your mom to cook the Bass, the catch of the day. I do hope your cousin found her diamond ring. I'm so glad you have special memories with your family at the lake. And now, you have new moments to experience at your cottage home at the lake. Thanks for sharing all of them, Jeanie. And lastly, I love that photo of Rick by the fire. ; )

Oh my goodness - reading this and seeing your pics brings back all my own Camp memories! My grandparents bought 2 lots on a mountain in New Hampshire (Gilmanton, NH) in 1963. My parents bought their lot behind them in 1971 and built their own cabin. We spent many happy summers and years and years up there on that mountain, swimming in the lake and loving every day. We even went up a few times for Christmas and got snowed in for three week, lol. All the properties have been sold thru the years and I miss those days. Thank you for sharing all your memories - brought all of mine back!!

Golly, sometimes I think, you and I have had parallel lives. My grandparents had a cottage until 1957, then in 1963 my parents bought a place surrounded by two bodies of water and hooked into a chain of three lakes. My summers were much like yours, suntanned and sun bleached hair. Pollywogs, turtles and fish. Swimming in dark pool coves fed by springs. The scents of pine and sand, calls of waterfowl and deer in the backyard. Sailing, canoeing, horsebackriding....tromping about until you almost got lost.
Loved all your photos, even the cards on the porch, which was every night. Hugs, Sandi

Lovely memories Jeanie, and you have so many old photos, that's so nice that you saved them! I'm hoping my beach house sees many generations, my children were babies when we bought it and now their children love their trips there and making their own memories. I am seeing many signs of Spring this week, daffodils, forsythia, buds on trees and song birds singing, so Summer is not too far away!

Jeanie you really touched me this morning. Your childhood is something from a Shirley Temple movie! Amazing adventures and such wonderful memories. You've been blessed I must tell you to have such a continuity in your life. My family and I have moved around during our lives. I have faint memories of preschool in Alabama, memories of growing up in Tennessee, memories of my sister and mother living in St. Louis, memories of them in Wisconsin and of course I helped move everyone to Michigan back around 198o. I of course made my move to Miami in the 1970's. So that is my continuity - various places in Florida. Lovely post!

Wonderful memories. My parents built a beautiful house in Switzerland 400 m high with the view on the Lake Lugano. We went several times in a year with our children and friends there and enjoyed the marvellous area there with the Lake Maggiore, Lake Como the Mount Generoso, which was behind the house 1880 m. high. Milan and Genua were not far away . We all have a lot of photos and films about that great house.
Enjoy the possibility to go to Lake Michigan every summer. Then you are in the middle of your memories.

Love hearing and seeing your memories of the lake cottage. It reminds me of my childhood going to "our" lake in upstate NY. We call the cottages "camps" up there. We still go up although it will be different now. My uncle, my mother's brother was the last remaining relative up there. It is an 8 hour drive for us, so it is notva place to go for just a weekend. I love it though and how most of it is still the same as it was when I was a child. Wonderful memories! ❤️

How lucky you are to have those irreplaceable memories - and so many of them. I don't recall much comparing with that in my childhood, except a few times when my cousins came to my grandmother's and we all played together. I am glad you have kept the cottage on and that you have the thoughts of it there, waiting to drag you through those long hard winters you have.
