Martha's Vineyard: Where's the Beach?

And so, you might add, "You were on an island with beaches all week and you didn't go to the beach?" Well, finally, we did!

It was the last day but our plane didn't leave till five so we took off for the beach between Edgartown and Oak Bluffs.

Gorgeous day! We arrived early in the morning -- only a few people were there when we got there -- we even beat the life guard!

But it didn't take long for big, beachy umbrellas to pop up and for families to start jumping in the water!

This beach is on Nantucket Sound and unlike the smaller beach we briefly checked out the day before, the sand was glorious and the water was surprisingly warm.

The seagulls were out in full force -- and I have to say they were beautiful.

Not particularly bright, but beautiful. Toss a shell their way and they go for it like food!

I don't know that much about gulls but I was surprised there were both the pure white ones and others with gray on their feathers.

I loved the white ones!

As for Rick and me, there was a lot of swimming and a lot of reading and just loving the sun.

People get to the beach a lot of ways! Rick probably would have taken this form of transport if he'd been home!

It's fun talking with the people as you splash around. I loved hearing all the reasons different people came to the Island. And everyone was playing, picnicking, just having fun!

It was tough to take off but on our way home we saw more of the beach and families cycling...

...and people jumping off the famous "Jaws" bridge.

What can I say? It was perfect.

Next time -- Goodbye to the Vineyard and my MV traveling tips!

What a great way to finish off your vacation! The beach looks beautiful. I love the bright-colored umbrellas! I think you were smart to do more of the active go go go type of stuff earlier in the trip and then close things off with a relaxing day before flying home!

The Mass. Audubon Society lists several gulls in various colors:
http://www.massaudubon.org/learn/nature-wildlife/birds/gulls/about

Gulls that look mostly brownish are probably young ones -- full sized but in their first year of life, if I understand correctly.

Beaches are wonderful, as you say... I love them too.

Is that where Jaws was filmed?
It just looks absolutely perfect.
A vacation to always remember.
So glad you had that opportunity.

Looks wonderful (but I have to admit, I do not share your fondness for seagulls). I'm glad you got to enjoy the beach. What a great time you had on your vacation!

I love your beach photos, Jeanie! I think Bob and I are becoming beach lovers in our old age. I don't like sitting on the beach much, but I do like walking on it and seeing the ocean.

What a wonderful day at the beach! Those seagulls are so pretty, and I love the white ones also. The first picture of the toes in the sand is delightful. I'm so glad you had a fun day at the beach, Jeanie. I long to see the ocean sometimes. :)

What a bathing beauty. I had no idea that the water around Martha's Vineyard was warm enough for swimming. What a delightful trip.

Love your beach photos. Those speckled gulls are juveniles. They turn pure white once they become adults. Just so you know:) I would love a beach day right now, but amazing how cool it is today. Not beach weather for me. Happy Wednesday. Hugs-Erika

What a wonderful place you visited, the beach looks so inviting. Love the photos, especially the gulls, they are beautiful. Thanks for sharing, hugs, Valerie

I've never seen pure white gulls. We have laughing gulls, which are black and white, and herring gulls, which look more like these juveniles, even when they're grown. There are so many species -- but, formally, no "sea gulls"! We don't care, do we? They're all beautiful: even the ones I'm not so fond of, like the herring gulls. They'll pluck ducklings out of the water for a snack.

I'm glad nothing plucked you off Martha's Vineyard before you had a chance to set to the beach! Wonderful photos, and what a wonderful way to end the visit.

Sounds like a great time at the beach... Nice way to end your trip!

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure seagulls can be all white, white with grey, white with black, or white with both grey and black.

What a fun way to spend a relaxing day. Nothing quite like the feel of sand between your toes.

Don't you love seagulls. I love to hear their call.
Have a great one, Jeanie.

Ahhhhh, thank you for keeping summer alive for me!!! We are going to get 90s in the next week, so our trees are confused about turning colors so far! Thank you for this view of summer, Jeanie!

Jeanie, I went back to your first post on Martha’s Vineyard and am so pleased I did. First of all, I have to admit that I had heard the name, but am afraid to say that I thought it was like in Napa Valley, CA., just some fields by the sea with vineyards – but never could figure out the name of the wine… Do they have local wines there? I then understood by your post that it was an island. Your photos are lovely and I would have also loved to see the charming Victorian houses in all their glorious colors, the ships, the alpacas, and great food. What an unforgettable week y’all had. Now after reading all your posts I have been educated on Martha’s Vineyard and can visualize it as a lovely historic island and not a place for viticulture businesses. I went back to read on the history of the island and was interested to learn that it was originally inhabited by the Wampanoag Native Americans. Your posts were so informative and your photos splendid, what a great place to visit.

This takes me back to my first year working as an American Camp Counsellor and we went with the family of one of our campers to Nantucket - that was 35 years ago. Yikes!! You did well to get some wonderful photos, I'm always ultra cautious about getting sand in the camera/phone! That umbrella would sell well in Australia - love the seagulls :)
Thank you for the encouraging words about my Aussie Probloggers conference, I am enjoying sharing some of the golden nuggets!
Enjoy the weekend

I do love a good beach. We had planned to go this month, but the time got away from us and lots of company, etc. Myrtle Beach is still nice in the fall. Maybe after the procedure. Your pics make me want to throw a beach towel in the car and head south. I'm so glad you had a good time.

Such a lovely beach to enjoy Jeanie and it looks like you and Rick had no problem getting into the beach groove. I know it was hard to leave such a wonderful vacation. Love the photos. We are planning our fall beach trip to Seaside and I can't wait! I enjoyed all of your trip photos, I love ti when you travel and share :)
Happy weekend my friend...........
