Birthdays and Greens!

You'd think after the last week, with the art sale eating most of the time, I'd be laying low. And in some ways, I would have liked to. But there was too much on the agenda -- the fun and the not-so-fun.

The fun was a belated birthday party for Rick and me and our friends Mark and Jan. Jan's birthday was in May, Rick's in July, mine in August and Mark's early this month. But we hadn't celebrated a one of them! So I decided to have a birthday party for us all.

I'd wanted to do a soup party for a long time and a cold November evening is a great time for it. I prepared a wonderful Indian-style butternut squash soup and a chili with ground pork instead of beef (who tastes the meat anyway?), while Rick did a split pea and ham soup. Jan brought salad and dessert and we enjoyed wine and cheese before dinner.

The food was good. The conversation was even better. There is nothing nicer than sitting around a table with dear friends, sharing stories of vacations and "what's happening."

That week was packed with multiple doc appointments -- infectious disease on Tuesday, the foot doc and dentist on Thursday. There was some good news on that front -- at least some. My MRSA infection is back but when that's kicked out, he Okd me to go on a new drug to curb my bronchiectasis flares. There are some potential side effects (increased upper respiratory infections, skin and dental issues) that may or may not motivate me to rethink that choice after I've given it a try, but it's exciting to think that while nothing can cure this disease, there  may be something that can make some of its challenges a bit easier.

The bad news came from the dentist. There is a cracked tooth under my crown and it looks like I'll be needing a bridge. Since one of the side effects of the new bronch drug is dental issues, and because we don't know how stable the existing tooth is, they want me to do it prior to going on the meds. Which means that may be delayed until March. And I have to remember to chew on the other side -- especially crunchy things!

As for the foot, I was hoping to be cleared for physical therapy but the doc said there was still inflammation and she wants me to wait another four weeks, come back and check it out then. But she did say as long as I taped the foot, I could dump the foot brace. This is good, because when it is on, my regular shoes won't fit and so I've been wearing sandals. That's fine when the weather was good but it's been pretty cold here and I'll be glad to have shoes with toes! And, it will help the other foot that needs those orthotics. So at least that was a plus. Oh, and I'm in AFib again. Swell. The hits just keep coming.

Then, Jan and I made our annual pilgrimage to the Northville Greens Market. I consider this my official start to the holiday season! We listened to Christmas music all the way, trying to pick our holiday song of the year (a tradition of exchanging gifts related to a specific Christmas song we've chosen.) Then we made our first stop, one of our favorite restaurants, for lunch.

I brought home half of my chicken and sweet potato fries to add to dinner leftovers. Then on to the market.

It felt smaller than in years past. More food and craft booths than greens.

But after some deliberation, Jan found her wreath and I found a couple of Christmas gifts.

Northville was getting ready for its Christmas parade and it was fun to see chairs and coats laid along the sidewalk, people staking out their seats!

As always, it was a wonderful day.I leave you with a few smiles --  my girl Lizzie, once again chasing her rainbows!

Checking it out, then going for the kill. (She missed. Again.)

Even though I don't put up one Christmas decoration in the house till after Thanksgiving, the greens market means the holidays are here for me. But first, there is another Cork Poppers gather. Stay tuned for more on "Wines to Get Us Through the Winter!"

I am able to join you in your dental misery, Jeanie. I, too, have a cracked front tooth, right at the front, and I need to have that taken care of. No fun and not cheap!

You're certainly getting more than your share of health issues. I wish you a better time for the holidays. It doesn't seem to slow you down though, in your quest for fun. I enjoy greens from afar, being deadly allergic to them in the house, or anywhere indoors. Pictures are lovely, though.

Oh Jeanie! What an awful week for medical news! That is just a lot for one person who already has enough health woes on her plate. I am so sorry!! I am glad you can get out of that brace, though. Sandal season is over for good and colder temps seem to be heading our way, at least in Minnesota.

I am glad you had some time with friends to lift your spirits. That greens market looks great! I want to try to find some planters for our front steps. I might do that next weekend.

You had a lot going on. Hope you get your tooth fixed soon. I have the worst teeth ever and full of crowns and such. I also hope the new meds will help you. Bob and I went to our local garden store and purchased 2 small trees for outside our store main door. One on each side. They have bright red bows and frosted pinecones put on them. Very festive. I have heard of the Northville Christmas market. Maybe some day will get to it. Hope your weekend is going great for you, Rick and Lizzy. Janice

Good morning Jeanie. You have been busy with so many activities and appointments. I love the idea of a soup party to celebrate birthdays. I am so sorry to read of your health concerns. I know you are doing your best to take care of yourself. The market looks like fun. Those wreaths are gorgeous. Wishing you and Rick a Happy Thanksgiving!

Other than all the medical things, what a nice week you had Jeanie. Medical things do just pile up through, don't they? I remember going through the must do first, then second, etc. list when my husband was getting ready for his kidney transplant. It's hard tow air when you just want to be better right away too, isn't it? I bought myself a wreath yesterday too, and it's just about time to get ready for the holiday. That's very exciting after this dull, grey and not so nice (weather wise) November. Hugs-Erika

Hello Jeanie,
I am sorry to hear about all the health issues. The holidays is not the time to be feeling bad. I hope you feel better soon, take care of that tooth too. The wreaths look pretty , the chicken and fries look yummy. Cute photos of Lizzie! Take good care of yourself. Have a happy Thanksgiving week!

Soup birthday party looks wonderful. The fireplace adds a lot of charm. Those wreaths are larger than What I see around here. They are beautiful.

Even late, birthdays are always worth celebrating! I've been in Portugal with the purpose of extracting 5 teeth and have implants done in a few months - so much cheaper than in Australia. So I can empathize with you on the dental issues... Best of luck with your health issues Jeanie, hope the medication helps.

...Jeanie, take care and be well. This is a heck of a time to in pain.

OK, I'm exhausted reading this. You are sooooo busy. I love how you celebrated for the late birthdays. Soup, and salad perfect. I'm with you on the dentist. With lupus and sjogren's it takes a tole on my teeth. I will see what the dentist says. Looks like fun in town and glad Jan found her wreaths. Hope you are relaxing today.

I've never heard of a "soup party" -- an interesting (and cozy-sounding) idea! Good news about the foot brace, anyway. Any kind of dental repair is a drag but it will be good to have that faulty tooth taken care of.

The soup party sounds like a blast. That's a neat idea that I never heard of before. What a perfect time of year.

Sorry to read about the tooth issues and health stuff. I hope the new medications work for you. Sending you all the well wishes!

What a fun idea with the combined belated birthdays!
I really hope the new medication works with no side effects and the bridge gets done as easily as possible. Shoes with toes is a plus--lol!
Your excursion with Jan looked like fun. Those wreaths were so full and beautiful.
Always love seeing Lizzie!! She is such a pretty girl!
Sending an early Happy Thanksgiving! :)

Dear friend, I love all your photos! Lizzie is precious! I have never tried sweet potato fries yet, not all restaurants in Montreal have them, but I would like to try this, because I love sweet potatoes.
This sounds like a wonderful celebration! Thank you so much for sharing.

Boo to the AFib & MRSA, and a cracked tooth, but cheers to friends, and bright colors, and sweet potato fries. Not to mention, shoes with toes! And best wishes to you for a Happy Thanksgiving!

And such nice dishes!
And your positive attitude!
Yikes on the tooth, though! But yippee on the market, food and friend. And Lizzie, of course!
And also... thank you so, so, so much for your comment! I sure will follow your tips and yes, I will tell them straight away that I am not used to hold a presentation. Put it out and then it´s gone - I thank you, Jeanie, big time!

Your birthday mish mash sounds like how a circle of my friends & I celebrated a couple weeks ago for a June and Sept birthday over lunch. For someone who's dealing with numerous health issues, any one of which is significant, you are handling them with grace, at least it appears so, Jeanie. I so admire you for that. Curious, what song did you choose to gift around?
Have a great week.

Don't envy you the dental issues, and I hope it doesn't turn out that a bridge is needed after all, even though you won't feel like arguing it fixed. I guess there is a good reason why you 'd need to wait till March though if you get it done soon. the chicken and sweet potato looks nice, even if it IS leftovers. And what a great idea to have a catch-up birthday party for you all! That really is taking lemons to make lemonade!

I always enjoy Lizzie, and those wreaths are gorgeous. I'm not too sure how I feel about the Grinch, but as long as he doesn't visit your house and add to your woes, I guess I'd let him hang around! Personally, it's those sweet potato fries that grabbed my attention. I've yet to find any decent ones around here, and I'm not going to buy an air fryer to do them at home!

Jeanie, goodness, so sorry about your health issues. At least you are staying ahead of the game as much as possible. Hoping everything calms down sooner than later. I was out today at stopped at a couple of favorite garden shops and HD, checking for the greens. They've been here awhile and already picked over. I do enjoy s few live plants but the live greens won't last with our crazy weather here. Today we were 72 degrees. Having one party for several birthdays sounds like a great idea. Wishing you and Rick a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Oh, Dear Jeannie. No wonder you have been busy reading blogs. Hope all those health issues clear up for the Holidays.
Your soup dinner sounds lovely. We did a huge soup party once, mixed with a game night for like 24...4 pots of soup and breads, and ice cream and cookies for dessert...it really was a fun time. Game stations were set up, and you took your food with you. Had a prizes for the highest scorers, a soup pot, a ladle and a salt and pepper. Might have to try that again. Sandi

Sunday was Remembrance Sunday for us, and now we're busy decorating for Advent. The Christmas markets here start on Wednesday. It will be a beautiful time, the month of light – December.
This morning we had our first snow, and the sun is shining too... absolutely beautiful.

All the best for the recovery of your foot; unfortunately, these things can take a long time... I wish you all the best.

Frohen Advent... and hug to you.
