Well, lake time is over for this kid. It was especially hard to leave this time. Rick and I had a wonderful ten days there, excellent weather, and even though I couldn't do much of what I'd hoped because of my foot, I still reveled in being at the lake and seeing fall emerge.
Above is the cottage from the road and below, looking from the back door toward the road and garage. The color soared in the past few days.
And, a lake scene. The two dogs on this fisherman's boat amused me.
I loved their little life jackets!
Yes, fall "emerged," finally. When we arrived, this road (my favorite) has turned into an archway of color.
Believe it or not, it's still not peak, but much closer than before.
On our last evening, we took a little color tour and both agreed it had really come on. My photos aren't the best, most taken from inside a moving car! So I skipped most of those!
One of our favorite spots to visit each fall is Treetops, a ski and golfing resort.
This time was no exception. Although it wasn't quite as splashy as in the past, it still had plenty to love!
And even a spot to rest!
The view from this hill looking down was lovely. But you can tell the effects of the ice storm if you look at the sort of "blank" spot between the two bands of color near the top of the photo. Those are all tall trees that lost their tops and most of their branches.
After our tour, we headed off for a farewell dinner. Where we had seen deer a few days before, we saw them again -- this time with friends. There were five altogether.
It was hard to hit the road this time. After Rick's long bike ride, we needed some one-on-one time together and you couldn't beat the beautiful weather and wonderful colors. But all good things come to an end, so off we headed to home.
We decided to take the scenic route and traveled the old roads most of the way. For close to the first half of the trip, the color didn't disappoint.
A quick stop at a roadside park gave me a couple of minutes to capture another few photos.
We enjoyed lunch at a cute cafe in Clare, Michigan and then stopped at a fruit stand where I got some apples. Apple bread will soon be on my menu!
I got a little pumpkin too. I'll get outside pumpkins this week at home.
I served as a substitute book on tape, reading my travel journal from our trip during these very dates last year aloud to Rick! In what felt like no time at all, we arrived at the cider mill!
We got a few donuts and of course I had to get a photo or two!
And a selfie.
So, now it's back home. Rick's off again, this time to kid-sit for the weekend, which I'm sitting out due to my foot. Then he'll head to the cottage again to close it up for the season. I don't think it will look like this after he's back -- at least not for long.
Thanks again for following my Postcards from the Lake. (And also, thanks to you to whom I can't reply personally via email because I don't have your addresses -- and some, with no blogs to follow or visit.)
I appreciate every comment and so again, thanks!
And a final note about the foot! Thanks for all your kind words on my foot. I CAN (and do) walk, usually using my walking stick except at home. I'm just not supposed to be on it very much, so I am limiting those times to necessary things. I'm on prednisone now, too, which is helping with the discomfort -- in fact, today, hardly there (which is why it is hard to remember "the rules." But I'm minding them! I've been ruptured before and another tear means surgery so I'm not messing around! Your words mean a great deal. Thank you!

...as I always told our grandchildren, "you can't come again unless you go home!"
Well you know what they say, "all good things must come to an end"- for this season anyway. The area is boasting fall and looks so vibrant and beautiful. It's always fun to see deer. Glad your foot is doing better and glad you are having your precious one on one time with Rick!! Love love the photos!!!
I always hated the day we closed our cottage in Maine down each fall. But it is a busy few months ahead and I'm sure you will be decorating for the holidays. Take care. Karen (Back Road Journal)
Prayers for foot being fine. I hope you get all the rest you need.
Beautiful pictures, the scenery is heart melting autumn.
Hope your foot continues to heal so you can continue your walking--i am up to 25 minutes now (treadmill or outside) and it feels so great--this from a gal who used to run miles when younger...ah me, the years do fly by quickly don't they? Great Fall color pictures...the trees gave you a wonderful farewell...
hugs, Julierose
Hello Jeanie,
I hope your foot is back to normal soon! I love the views of the lake, the beautiful trees and colors. The resort has fabulous views. Great photos of you and Rick. Take care, have a wonderful week!
I know that cottage country is at its most terrific in autumn. NOw, when you said, "walking stick," you sounded British to me. Have you picked that up from travel of British tv? I have always sad 'cane' but it might be different you way. And btw, I might want to day walking stick. ๐ The other day I found myself writing cemetry instead of cemetery because that is the way that I hear it on British telly.
Dear Jeanie, I hope your foot gets better every day. Your photos are absolutely stunning. Glorious Autumn ๐ colours.
And your selfie...beautiful. You look radiant, dear friend ๐งก
Such beautiful fall foliage! It sounds like you had a lovely trek back home.
It’s interesting that the dogs, who are probably good swimmers have life jackets, and the guy standing up in the boat, doesn’t. Seems about right for human intelligence!
I am sure it is bittersweet to close the cottage each year! But there was beautiful color for you to enjoy and many lasting memories made in your cottage by the lake. Thanks for sharing with us. Be careful and make sure to take time to heal!
I so enjoy your 'Postcards from the Lake' posts ... the photographs, the scenery, the animals, flowers etc.. are always lovely to see and todays post was glorious in it's Autumn colours.
Do please take good care of your foot (I know you will)
I'm sure that along with me, all your blogger friends sends hugs and very good wishes.
From a rather wet and soggy UK this Sunday, I say ...
All the best
Jan
Those are lovely pictures. And I hear how you never get enough of the cottage, closing up again!?
I expect the life jackets help catch and haul a dog back in the boat if he falls off. Not just flotation.
Such wonderful autumnal colours!
You have some lovely fall color. Thanks for sharing it! The weather folks say that our drought means we won't get much this year. I'm not sure if yesterday's rain is enough to help.
speedy recovery on your foot. It is bittersweet to leave your sweet cottage for the winter. It really is beautiful there it looks very much like we do right now.
Cathy
You are right about the color coming on and that beautiful road towards your cousins. Wow. The color is amazing. It must be really sad to know another season is winding down. I had a hard enough time trying to pick up my screen porch so we can close it up (I couldn't do it; I got too sad.), it must be worse when the whole place needs to be closed up. It can be a long winter. That's a really lovely self of you too. Enjoy the autumn, and those beautiful colors. hugs-Erika
You take it easy, young lady!
It is a lovely time of year. I enjoyed your farewell!
The Fall foliage pics are all so wonderful. I have never been to Treetops. Must go there some time. In the Fall for sure. Glad you had a great time taking the back roads. Janice
gorgeous autumn colors. you will surely miss your special time at the lake, we will too. i am looking forward to reading anything you write about, i always enjoy your stories and art work!! the produce stand looks magnificent!!
Good evening, I really enjoyed your photos very much-here where i live we have had very little fall colors-mostly none-but with all the rain yesterday that we got-over 4 inches and cooler weather coming in hoping we will see colors in the trees. thanks for sharing loved the market too hugs Kathy
I've enjoyed all your postcards from the lake - and what beautiful photos of those glorious colours.
The weekend rain has brought a lot of color to the leaves even here in the much more southern part of Michigan. Your photos are great. Good luck with healing.
Jeanie your photos are beautiful...there is nothing like Autumn and all the gorgeous colors. How wonderful to have a cottage by the lake. Take care with your rehabilitation...I, too speak from experience. Happy Autumn Kari @ Me and My Captain
I am so glad you joined the silvers:) Look at that beautiful healthy head of hair. It's funny how we never know ..that it actually can suit us best.I know..to each their own.. but what a relief t not have appointments for hair lol.WE have enough of other ones..;). Cheers!
Jeanie, Thank you for taking us along for the beautiful color tour. Around us it definitely isn’t anywhere as lovely as in the past. I don’t know yet if we’ll try a tour this fall or not. I love your selfie of your beautiful smile ๐
I like that road with the arched trees with tops touching each other. Nice. It’s always green in Hawaii, as we’re in the tropics. Love your colorful trees.
You are so lucky to live in an area where the leaves turn such bold and colorful colors in autumn. Here it goes from green to brown. Apples and cider donuts. What a great post you have shared with us. I need to be thanking YOU for this glorious post, Jeanie.
Hope your foot gets better soon. I tore an arm-muscle, heck, getting old(er), huh? Your cottage is beautiful and oh, the lake.
Fun idea with the frame. Apple bread sounds interesting! Hope you share the recipe.
Very cute selfie!
The fall colors in your part of the world are just spectacular. Continue following the rules on your foot and soon you can dance. Ha! Yumm! Apple donuts, apple cider, and apple bread!
Sorry Jeanie was unaware of your foot troubles as I've been travelling since the 6th and not reading blog posts, but hope you feel better soon. Beautiful Fall colours and love the deer.
Lake goodbyes are never easy. What beautiful pictures and the tree color reminds me of my ownership of our B&B on 1/3 acre with babbling brook and tons of trees) in Kearsarge NH (North Conway area). do keep healing that foot Jeanie, keep baking bread and creating art pictures! take care, and big hugs to you.
I know it’s hard to leave, but you’ll be back before you know it. I’m sure it goes faster every time. I hope your foot is feeling better. It’s hard for us to stay down and behave ourselves. I think your pictures are beautiful. We do not have any color yet. The leaves are just starting to break away from the trees. It’s getting colder now 60s and 70s so it won’t be long. I hope you have a good week. Missy.
Yes you colors are popping for sure. Ours looked like they were getting lighter in color on the way to changing. Yesterday we had rain so possible that our colors will start coming out more with that.
The photos are lovely. I love seeing how fall turns up so differently in other parts of the country. I’m so glad you and Rick had this special time together in such a wonderful setting full of so many memories from years past. Here’s go moving on into the coming days as the year winds down. Do take care of that foot. Hugs.
So glad you were able to enjoy some of autumn's crowning glories before closing up the cottage for the winter: the "boulevard" view down your cousin's road is gorgeous! And those tiny pumpkins are just darling. Love the selfie! Glad to hear that medication is helping, but especially glad to hear you're minding the rules -- take care!
Oh all those trees are just magnificent. You had a good time and the lake.. until next time.
It's great to see all those amazing colors, particularly along the roadways. We don't really get a lot of reds like that here in England. What a great idea to read from your travel journal! Oh, and I love the adirondack chairs at Treetops with the Michigan map as the back. :)
I'm glad you're getting some relief from the discomfort. It looks like you had a beautiful trip. I'm so glad.
Such glorious color, I love seeing those beautiful trees turning. Glad your foot is on the mend. It all takes time. Happy new week.
I bet that you're looking forward already to being back there next spring!
It's good to see that you are not feeling as bad with your foot. xx
I love the colours, autumn is stunning. All the photos are beautiful.
What beautiful autumn color. We're just beginning to get a few changing leaves, but the weather is definitely fall. I've got to get my gloves out. One morning soon I'll need them.
Take care of your foot. I've had a partial tear and babysat it. Well worth the care to avoid surgery.
Wow it is so beautiful there. We don't get much color change here. Yes, I can see how calming that road is. What a nice market. The apples look amazing. Hope you are feeling better with your foot. Looking forward to seeing the apple cake. Or was it bread?
Michigan is so beautiful in the fall. Thanks for the colorful photos. Sorry that you had to close up before the leaves reached the most color. There's always next year!
Autumn is gorgeous in your neck of the woods! I so enjoyed seeing your lake cottage before the season ends. I'm sorry to learn about your foot, but am glad you are doing better. Take care of yourself. It was good visiting with you.
It's such a beautiful little cottage and place. I totally get that it's hard to leave there.
We are heading back to East Texas again this coming weekend, and I do hope to see some lovely color in the trees. Thank you so much for your beautiful fall photos!
Such a heartfelt wrap-up! ๐ Ten days by the lake sounds like the perfect way to soak in the last bits of summer. Even if you couldn’t do everything you planned, just being surrounded by that calm and beauty must’ve been wonderful. ๐๐
I smiled at Deb's comment, above. I was in east Texas two weekends ago, and autumn color was in short supply -- unless you count fields of sunflowers, goldenrod, and such. You know my standard response to posts like this: envy! But we have rain coming this weekend (maybe) and a true cold front in 7-10 day (maybe). We'll see! Keep babying that foot. It has to be tough, but it will be worth it in the end.
May you continue to heal. The color is spectacular.

Wow, Jeanie. I bet you can't wait to paint from those photos...gorgeous. We took a ride yesterday, and its just turning here, but we have had two cold nights, and the chestnut is already dropping leaves...sigh.
To everything there is a season. And, that road to your cousins looks exactly like my sister-in-law's in Door county. There is a spectacular road up on the penninsula that has a million curves around trees,...LOL Hugs, and hope you can enjoy being home, too. Sandi
You are getting so much Fall color! And those deer! I just saw a mama and four young ones next to the apple tree. They were munching on those apples that fall to the ground. I sure will miss these lake posts - they are always so charming. I love that archway of trees. Would love to walk through there. Those are fun pictures you took of the treetops resort. The apple farm is so nice with all the apples and pumpkins, and the cider mill sounds Yummy. What a pretty selfie that is of you. Love the color of your turtleneck. Be sure to show us some apple bread if you make some. And I hope your foot gets better with each day, Jeanie. Thanks for this post this morning, it was delightful to read.

Thank you so much for all the gorgeous fall pictures! Been housebound so long. My favorite time of year and I do so love seeing the fall brilliance.
So glad you are doing okay and being careful not to overdo.
*love and hugs from West Fargo*
Wow, I love those pretty colored leaves. Take it easy and hope you rest your foot.
Hello Jeanie! Lovely photos of Autumn. Everything looks so magical in autumn. I hope your leg feels better soon. The dogs are so cute. Love your selfie! Super cute. :) Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. Look at all those apples! Wow! Looking forward to seeing what you make with them. Have a lovely rest of the week. Thank you for visiting my blog and for your lovely comment. I appreciate it so much. Have a lovely day!
So glad it's not feeling as bad the whole time as it was before.... but you're right - you need to rest it to discourage any further problems. I'd guess your doctor is being super careful. I'm glad you had good weather for the last few days even if you had to appreciate it from the chair more than you'd want. Your photos show a truly gorgeous scene! Jenny W
Beautiful photos of a Autumn in your corner of the globe. Taking a little drive is a wonderful way to admire the colours of the season. Love the "frame" for taking photos. I just made some apple muffins today after picking the last of the fruit off the trees. Hope your foot improves quickly.
Truly stunning photos. Though I'm sorry about your foot. Glad you got to spend ten days there. Very, very cool.
The colors are gorgeous. I am glad you had a lot of fall fun on the way home. Apple farm! Cider Mill and donuts! Yum!
Feel better my friend you and your foot are in my prayers.
I’ve enjoyed looking back at your Postcards and hope to read more come next spring when you return to the lake house And as Tom (up the top) said….if you don’t go home you can’t come back.
We feel the same way about going back up to Far North Queensland when winter is on the horizon. Sadness at leaving but knowing there’s next year to look forward to
I must say you do get the most fabulous autumn colourings in your part of the world. Most Australian native trees are evergreen - so deciduous one were all imports. Some areas are cold enough to appreciate the changing colour but nothing like the east coast of North America
Fantastic autumn colors
How wondrous. You have your own utopia. I know you're going to miss it. Hope that foot heals quickly.
Your foliage colors may be late, Jeanie, but still quite wonderful and taking the back way vs a highway is always nice. Glad to read the foot update. Closing uo the cottage is bittersweet, nut the memories will last until you are back again.
Oh, I do love the Postcards from the Lake, brings back such memories of my years with family at our lake cabin in New Hampshire. Oh yes, nothing like fresh apple farm apples, used to get warm apple cider donuts too with our cider or hot chocolate :) Dawn P. Albany, GA
If (hopefully when) I can get myself a boat for the lake, I would likely get some life jackets for the dogs too!! ☺ Beautiful photos Jeanie...and yes, it's apple season! I've been eating a lot of apple bread lately!
Bittersweet time of the year for sure. I for one, am going to miss your postcards from the lake. What history your cabin has, the years of memories you have. It is a place I would love to visit someday.
Jeanie,
What a beautiful Fall post...Your trees are looking better than ours here..The dry Summer and the rain and wind that we finally got has let to a late start in the color change but a lot of trees have already lost their leaves... I am sure it is hard to leave such a beautiful place... Thanks so much for all your visits...My am healing nicely after my Fall...Everything looks a lot worse than it really is...It could have been a lot worse so I am very thankful....Hope all is well with you and yours!!
Hugs,
Deb

My gosh, this home looks like those I read in small-town romance novels. The beautiful colors, fall produce, peaceful lake and cute fur babies. Perfect!
Lovely pic of you.
What lovely colours. Like those stacks of apples.
What a beautiful little retreat. The colors truly are spectacular! Wishing you a healthy continued recovery of your foot.
I like this photo of you, Jeanie, it's lovely! You will miss the cottage at the lake, but come spring you will be there again. Hopefully until then your foot will have improved a lot and you don't have to stick to any rules. I bet that PT will help as well when you get started with that. I still do PT for my knee, even though the surgery was more than 18 months ago. I feel that it is just really good for me.
P.S. I just love the deer and the fact that they come so close to the house of your friends!
What a wonderful spot by the lake... simply love it.
Hugs and continued best wishes for a speedy recovery.
I'm so happy you shared this post with FFO. I would love to visit your summer home. It is so pretty there. Have a nice weekend.
Holy cow!! It is actually stunning there. I am so jealous.

Lovely fall colour!
So many beautiful photos of the fall colours. You really convey the peaceful time you had, and the good byes that are necessary this time of the year. It seems you could prolong your stay this year, due to the good weather.
I am happy to hear that your foot is getting better. However, one has to force oneself to take it easy as the pain eases. Take care and enjoy the autumn at home.
