We had our first no-art day (or at least, as I write this, the one day when neither of us did art). But there was a good reason. Absolutely grim porch weather (and that's where we work) kept us inside. That's changing as our temps return to normal and the rain and gloom is a thing of the past.
That doesn't mean we haven't been productive or having fun at our two-person art camp! The past few days have been very productive -- and also fun!
Yesterday, my cousin David came by and we had a good long talk (with more to come). And on Saturday, friends Mark and Jan stopped by, returning home from vacation. They brought us pie and a wine called "Chaos," which seemed appropriate for what turned out to be a politically charged weekend for those following US politics!
We hit another farmer's market and Kate brought some beautiful flowers for the porch. I did a very crummy painting of them but it was a good warm-up for other things.
I decided I needed to do some bookmarks for the November sale and I did a few (Christmas trees, flowers) that are the right size (or will be, once I slice the paper in half). Then I decided I should make a bigger painting and plan on slicing that into five or six bookmarks. So this is the full piece. I'll cut it up when I'm home and maybe ink in a few details if needed.
After that I decided to get bold. I'm terrible at painting people but Monique inspires me (on many levels) but especially with her "Paris People" -- all painted from behind. I thought I'd give that technique a try. While this photo of our grands does have a face (the one I painted looks NOTHING like our little guy) it's a start.
Here's the finished piece. I can see I need to adjust the skin tones now that I've photographed it. And hopefully, fix the mouth!
Kate, meanwhile, has been plugging away on a few projects -- a wonderful loon that hopefully will find its way into a 2025 calendar and some mushrooms, among other things.
This one is mixed media with watercolor and watercolor pencil. (And she's even finished more of it now!)
I had seen a technique someplace online where the artist taped off areas of the painting with a grid before painting a landscape behind a window. I thought I'd try it. Here's what it looks like. First I drew the scene, then taped off the "window panes."
Then I painted the scene in.
Finally, I removed the tape. I'm not thrilled with the results here -- that blank green "grassy" square in the middle is bad composition -- I should have had something there. An extension of the house? A tree? The house with the thatched roof on the left should be wider or taller; even I can't really tell what it is. Also, the tape was really too wide. If I do this again, I'll use a narrower tape or a bigger piece of paper. But the technique was fun and I may try it again, having learned a few things.
While my cousin David was here, we noticed we had yet another visitor. Or, at least one flew by, landing in the neighbor's tree.
I rarely see our bald eagle. And when I do, I don't usually have my camera with me. Or, I'm inside and afraid to spook him while he's on the beach.
Today I was lucky.
These photos were taken from two lots away from the tall tree where he's hanging out (zoomed and cropped). They're a tad soft if you look at them too big.
But I was thrilled.
Apart from one day where the weather was cold, gloomy and damp enough we couldn't be out on the porch to paint, the weather has been pretty good. We've enjoyed most dinners on the porch after cleaning up our painting messes. And yes, a bit of wine, too.
We did have one deluge! I was glad to have a good roof and no basement to worry about.
Art camp continues and today looks to be lovely. There's much on the agenda so. . .
. . . Gotta fly!
(P.S.) A note to "unknown" who had asked about the commenting and questions and later wrote to apologize for offending me. I wasn't at all offended by your question, though it was very kind of you to apologize. It's always good to reiterate things like that a comment and reply policy every now and then so I thank you for asking the question and motivating me to do it! And with, or without, your own blog, I hope you return!

...your lake time looks fabulous! Keep enjoying your Jolly July.
ReplyDeleteWine and pie. Now that's my kind of buddy:)
ReplyDeleteLots of glorious art work here. I'm so glad you have an opportunity to do this with your artist friend.
Very enjoyable post.
Hugs
Have fun being creative.
ReplyDeleteOh, the bald eagle is always a wonderful surprise to see. It sounds like you are enjoying your time at the lake, Jeanie. And your art pieces look very nice. I especially love the one wit the Christmas trees. I'm sure those bookmarks will sell nicely for the November sale. I would definitely keep the big painting and put it on your mantel or somewhere in your house. I so love these moments that you share with us at the lake, Jeanie. Thank you.

Hello Jeanie,
ReplyDeleteLove your Eagle photos, great captures.
Good times with friends and family, can't forget some good wine.
Your did great with your little guy painting.
Take care, have a great day!
Good afternoon, I enjoyed reading about your art camp-so fun!! If you are selling your painted bookmarks I would love to know the price and if you would mail on out.
ReplyDeleteThe other day I heard "our" eagle calling but the leaves right now are too thick to see them. I just love it when this pair visits. You capture awesome photos
enjoy the rest of your week
Kathy
Such an enviable time at the lake. Summer weather brings out my watercolor urge, too.
ReplyDeleteYour art is lovely but I have to say that eagle at the top grabbed my attention. I was so happy to see more of him (her). Eagles look so strong and majestic.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a wonderful art camp! That picture of the eagle is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYou are just having a grand summer already
Cathy
Oh goodness Jeanie--a bald eagle!! How wonderful to see him. He's a beauty! You are too critical of your art, my friend. I think it's great! Enjoy art camp at your happy place.
ReplyDeleteI love the whole concept of art camp for two women who are young at heart. The window painting was well done, and I am sure it was a treat to see the eagle.
ReplyDeleteA bald eagle! A BALD EAGLE!
ReplyDeleteThrilled to bits!
xoxoxoxox
Your paintings are so original and soothing to look at. The bald head eagle is so majestic
ReplyDeleteI can't believe the photos you got of a balded eagle!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the window pane technique and am filing that tip away. I'll bet you can come up with something to put in the blank square.
How cool to see an eagle! Maybe it’s a sign.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing your art and how you try new things. Art camp is inspiring.
You have been lucky to have mostly nice weather for Art Camp. That bald eagle is awesomely awesome. Kate's mushrooms are inspiring and I agree on the chaos. Love seeing what you are up to at Art Camp.
ReplyDeleteIt is very rare to see a bald eagle so close. That a big present to you from nature.
ReplyDeleteYour report looks fabulous, despite a little gloom. We've had day after day of flooding rain, and it's going to be next week before I can get my brush out. I was startled by your mention of November -- but it is coming, isn't it? It's hard to believe we're nearly in August!
ReplyDeleteAlways a treat to see our country's bird. Ben Franklin wanted the wild turkey to be the national bird, but glad they decided on the bald eagle. Hope you continue to have fun creating. Janice
ReplyDeleteBravo that you keep on trying and experimenting. Perfection is over-rated anyway. I will have to look for a wine called Chaos, although I am not sure I want to introduce chaos into my mostly tranquil life! I still cherish the two bookmarks you sent me several years ago, and they are still used carefully and only in books of high standard. It’s great to have that talisman of beauty when I open the pages.
ReplyDeleteJeanie, I love the eagle photos. With our lakes and a river that runs through our city, eagle sightings are no longer rare. They are majestic and it is always awesome to capture a photo. They fly over our house regularly. Enjoy your time painting!
ReplyDeleteWow. Tou had a busy but fun week Jeanie. Company is always fun, isn’t it? And that eagle. wow! You got some excellent photos. What a great visitor. I hope you continue to have some fun lake time. And I hope the only chaos you get is wine too. Enjoy!!!
ReplyDeleteI have no talent at all, not to mention shaky hands, but how I love to see your art. It's incredible that you can make something out of nothing, starting with a blank sheet or canvas. Keep it up, will you? You're doing so well in life.
ReplyDeleteFun times:) Friends..flowers fauna etc and art!
ReplyDeletespending time with friends, there is nothing better. talking about politics right now, there is nothing worse, you must be very good friends!! your art is splendid, you are extremely talented.
ReplyDeletethe window pane, to me, is spectacular, i love it!! and the bald eagle images "almost" stole the show here but didn't, your pics are beautiful!!
please don't be offended by the politics comment, it was just meant to be funny!!!
Amazing eagles! I like your windowpane painting technique. Even if it didn't work out exactly as you wanted this time around, it's a learning experience, right?!
ReplyDeleteJeanie, Your photos of the bald eagle are fabulous! We had one around our cottage and I was never able to capture a good photo of it. I love the window panes! I immediately thought of curtains to edge it around it. You did a good job on yours.
ReplyDeleteFabulous pictures! 👌
ReplyDeleteGlad you and your friend are having fun, and you are bothe
ReplyDeletemaking beautiful art. And how special to see an eagle so near! Hugs, Valerie
Love the "window" painting..I'll have to try that..
ReplyDeleteGreat Eagle photos..I'm so jealous..I've never seen one when I had a camera in my hand... even then it wasn't close enough.
You are very brave to keep trying people in your watercolors.
I have given up... At least for the time being. Enjoy your weekend.
I saw a pair of eagles this morning!
ReplyDeleteArt and wine sounds like a great combination! I remember seeing that technique on the internet and found it interesting. I'm glad that you tried it out, and even though you are not too happy with it, you learned a lot and it didn't put you off to try again. The idea of cutting a bigger painting into bookmarks is a good one. How wonderful to see this Bald Eagle; I really like the fotos that you captured. Have a lovely weekend - Carola
ReplyDeleteArt camp with a friend sounds like so much fun. I, too, am inspired by Monique to try some simple figures in my watercolours. I never post anything I've painted, but perhaps I will be brave and do so soon. It's fun to dabble. I like the windowpane idea, too.
ReplyDeleteI like your paintings Jeanie! I think you captured your grands well~ sometimes we are our own worst critics! Love your bald eagle captures!
ReplyDeleteJenna
What great photographs of that eagle! Your artwork is great, I especially like the one of the kids. Great job!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun Jeanie. A whole week to really concentrate on projects and friendship and such a beautiful setting. Your Eagle is magnificent..and demands a painting, lol. Have fun, I'm so jealous...smiles! Sandi
ReplyDeleteJeanie -- you've beautifully captured the slowed-down rhythms of lake time! And especially the opportunities it offers to try out new techniques, new perspectives in your artistic life. I love the pines, and it will be interesting to see how they find new life as bookmarks. FWIW, someone once told me that the point of drawing (or painting!) something was not to duplicate it -- a photograph can do that quite well -- but to express your own relationship to the subject & your feelings about it. Seems to me the tenderness evoked in the painting of the grands does that quite well.
ReplyDeleteAlso... maybe you wished for something different from your window pane picture. From here, though, it looks like this offers some exciting possibilities. I hope you try it again!
Glad to see you haven't let a little bad weather slow you down too much.
I LOVE the bald eagle -- what a thrill!
Hope you're enjoying a wonderful weekend!
Art camp looks and sounds fun. I like the painting of the Grands.
ReplyDeleteHard to believe that August is just around the corner, enjoy the remainder of July.
My good wishes.
All the best Jan
Jeanie,
ReplyDeleteLooks like you are really enjoying your Summer....Good for you!!

The eagle is magnificent. Flowers are beautiful. Friends are always great fun. And I love your art! I'm so scared to draw people, too. I think you did really well! Love the window idea. Having an art retreat with a friend...just fabulous!
ReplyDeleteHope you are feeling better. I'm coming around over here. Have a great rest of your weekend. :)
It does look like you are having fun with your two-person art camp! That eagle is magnificent.
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful update! Your two-person art camp sounds like an absolute joy, even with the occasional rainy day! Looking forward to seeing more of your beautiful work and adventures! Keep enjoying every moment! 🌟🎨
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a wonderful time! Rainy days, art, a bald eagle sighting! Those are spectacular shots!
ReplyDeleteYour art camp is such a fun tradition! And how fun to have other visitors drop by. The bald eagle pics are amazing. It's very rare for us to see them besides when we are at the zoo! I'll see them far up in the sky on a run sometimes but that's about it! What a treat to be able to see it land and have your camera ready for pics!
ReplyDeleteI loved reading about your two-person art camp! Despite the gloomy weather, it sounds like you've been very productive. Your bookmarks and the "Paris People" inspired piece are wonderful. Kate's projects sound fascinating too, especially the loon and mushrooms.
ReplyDeleteThe window grid painting technique you tried is intriguing, and the bald eagle photos are spectacular. Art camp on the porch with friends and pie sounds perfect. Thanks for sharing your creative journey!
Hugs and blessings, Jeanie
Great blog
ReplyDeleteWonderful creative time you have or had...
ReplyDeleteMaybe the grid you glued on is just too wide, you should try narrower stripes at some point... or, what do you think?
You did a wonderful job with the two boys in the sand.
The eagle is magnificent.
Thank you for your great photos of your wonderful week. Fun.
A hug for you. Viola
Those flowers are beautiful! I love your paintings... I really should get my watercolours out and have a go :)
ReplyDeleteHow cool to see our national symbol up close and personal. I know that must have been a tremendous blessing to y'all! Art camp is always a great idea. Nice seeing you having such a great time!
ReplyDeleteI like the painting with the window very much. I think that green pane in the middle is realistic and that the painting looks better for it.
ReplyDeleteYou paint very well. Please don't be hard on yourself. I am still drawing stick figures (laugh). I think it's wonderful you enjoy your summer days on your porch painting. This sounds so inviting. I know weather sometimes can keep you way.
ReplyDeleteI've been following the politics. I am feeling enthusiastic!
Cheers to good wine, our cherished national bird the bald eagle, and friends and family.
Velva
Stunning photos. And your visit sounds fun and interesting.
ReplyDeleteArt camp sounds like so much fun! Even though your grandsons may not have come out looking like they were supposed to your painting taken independently from the photo is fabulous. People are so hard to paint (I find!) and even harder when using watercolors. What a great capture of the bald eagle; I never have my camera handy when we see ours either!
ReplyDeleteI do love all the art at art camp. Mushrooms is one I love painting too, so it was fun to see. Your eagle pictures were amazing!!! Glad you had your camera nearby. Enjoy your summer by the lake, I know I sure do.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you test yourself learning new painting techniques. And that capture of the eagle how great is that!
ReplyDeleteYou got some great eagle photos. .
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice time you had with you friends and cousin dropping in.
Lovely watercolors.
Art making, friends, cousins, pie and wine, bald eagle visit - quite an enjoyable time at the lake.!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you’ve been keeping busy with a variety of creative projects and social activities, even if the weather threw a wrench in your plans for a bit. It’s great to hear that you’ve been making progress and finding inspiration from friends and family. Your approach to painting bookmarks and experimenting with new techniques sounds exciting. It’s always wonderful to see how different influences and ideas shape your work. Keep up the fantastic work, and here’s to more productive and sunny days ahead! I have just shared a new blog post and I would love for you to check it out and give me your feedback on www.melodyjacob.com. Thank you!

ReplyDeleteYour porch flowers are beautiful.
The windowpane technique looks interesting.
