Our two-person art camp wrapped up on a lovely day -- the kind that makes it hard to leave the lake. It was a productive thirteen days -- and a fun one!
The time wasn't without frustrations, due to my MRSA and pseudomonas lung infections and two other infections that were the result of medication side effects. Time was spent on my breathing vest and nebulizer -- way more time than I wished. And medication side effects also prohibited many foods (mostly the ones I liked!) and that made eating a bit more complicated! But then, there were the walks, an early birthday celebration at a favorite restaurant, and hours of good talks. And of course, there was the pleasure of painting in the company of others (even if you don't always like what you do!) That more than made up for the downsides!
I was pleased with much of my output, some of which I shared in an earlier post. I also did several cards. These were my "warm ups" but they ended up taking longer than some bigger pieces! I might have to raise prices for hand-painted watercolor cards this fall. (Right now I charge $5 and they are all originals. I don't think that's enough.)
I got three cards finished. The one above and the one below might be part of a series or smaller versions of future larger paintings. They are inspired by my friend Dick Hill's series of "Ethel and Sissy" paintings, all of which feature a cat duo having fun adventures.
The penguin on skates might work for the holidays.
Then I did this one -- which I still don't like -- of Rick in a kayak at sunset. I originally did it as a vertical but there is too much sky and ground.
I think I liked it better as a 4x6 size (original). I still don't have the color right -- at least to me.
And then there was this -- you can see the original I'm working from on the table. It's based on one of my photographs from the ditch which I shared in this post.
Here's the finished piece. I think I need to go in and highlight some of the yellow "dots" on the water but it's very close to done.
Kate was productive, too. She took a year off from designing a calendar but I think she'll have one for 2025.
Every year we go to my favorite restaurant, Bennethum's, where Kate treats me to an early birthday happy hour.
The salmon cakes were especially good, but so, too, were the mussels and coconut shrimp!
Needless to say, we were smiling!
A mystery was solved when we discovered the cause of all the shards of bark that have been falling on the lawn all summer.
This little guy has been pecking all over this tall pine. Rick and I had wondered how the bark was falling so much. Now we know!
We also saw many ducks, who seem to like our beach as a resting spot (which is fine with me! The geese? Not so much!)
Most of our weather was lovely, and while there were no swimming days (I had to keep out of the water; otherwise I would have happily jumped in -- it was that hot!), no complaints. We did have one big thunderstorm -- a good time for catching up on "Professor T" and "Grantchester."
We enjoyed some fun and baffling things on our walks, among them, this very tiny fungi.
Any fungi experts out there? The largest in the photo above is no larger than my thumbnail.
Of course there was good fruit -- cherry and peach season. You can't beat it. And it wonderful to be able to spend a good deal of time with my cousin David.
He lives in the Cleveland area and we don't see each other enough. There was good talk about olden days at the lake!
We got back home and it was so good to see Rick, who had a long bike hike to Ohio while I was gone. For once, Lizzie was pretty easy to pack up. She was good all week.
So onward, to the rest of summer, art camp a wonderful memory.
Cheers!
Finally, a quick housekeeping thing. I've been negligent in comment reply of late. (My blog visiting hasn't been all that great either, but I'm catching up slowly!) I want to thank all of you who have commented on recent posts. If you asked a direct question, I'll be sure to get back to you. Otherwise, bear with me! Between art camp, too much time spent on machines, and travel, I've fallen off! But I appreciate and value each and every comment. Thank you so much!

...all good things come to an end. The woodpecker must have feasted on pine beetles. The fungus looks like Red chanterelle. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteJeanie, the picture of you looks so pretty. I am glad you had some painting fun. I too had to take some meds this summer that had side effects. It was antibiotics. But when all was said and done...for a good many days I was brand new. But it's some kind of allergies keep bugging me. Never had them till I moved back into town. Bummer. I am very bad about blogging and keeping up. Hoping I do better when the weather forces us to stay inside. LOL Take care. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeletethat is a nasty super infection you had! The drawing and painting around the lake are just gorgeous
ReplyDeleteThat really sounds like a lovely time together. I am so sorry you were feeling unwell though. The paintings are so wonderful and the two kitties are so sweet. I am sure Lizzie is part of these paintings as well and she must be very happy to have you home again. Take care!!
ReplyDelete-Soma
Looks like you had a wonderful art camp with your friend, Jeanie. Your happy place is the perfect spot to let your creativity soar. Take care of yourself. I'm hoping your health issues will soon be behind you!
ReplyDeleteYour art amp sounds so fun-and I love all of your paintings even the one you don't care for on the lake-they are all wonderful and know you will sell them.
ReplyDeletesorry about going through being ill-no fun.
your kitty looks happy hugs Kathy
Hello Jeanie :=)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely surprise to have a visit from you when I came to my computer this morning, because I had read how busy you were at Art Camp, and what a productive time you had. Those Kitty Paintings are so cute, and so is the Penguin. I'm sorry you are still unwell, and hope you improve soon.
Three months is a long time to be away from my blog friends so I have started blogging again Jeanie, although my 36 yr old grandson is still staying with me.
All the best
Sonjia
Despite not feeling well, Jeanie, which was unfortunate, it looks like you had a great time at the summer art camp. And, the early birthday treat looked delicious too. As far as blog commenting, it can be hard to keep upon a daily basis with so much going on in our respective lives, so catching up when we can is fine.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun camp, and yes you definitely need to charge MUCH more for your handpainted cards!! They are stunningly beautiful. So sorry you still cannot kick those infections, I hope they are resolved soon, and you are back to health. Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteSeems like you had a good summer at the lake despite some medical issues, Jeanie. The therapeutic value of painting was probably magnified. I am pretty sure that your woodpecker is a Downy Woodpecker based on what I see from the rear, and I suspect that the fungus is Orange Mycena. Let me quickly add that fungi are far from my field of expertise!
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday Jeanie. It doesn't sound like the easiest of art camps with the medicals and the off limit foods, but you are right that the art time and i'm sure the friend time more than made up for all the other extraneous events. You've done some lovely art. I especially like the one you don't care for- Rick out in his kayak. I'm not keeping up with commenting quite like I used to, but I wanted to say thanks for the nice comment you made on my Greece journal blog post. You are doing better than me. Are you home for a long time now- I can't believe you are closing up the lake quite so soon. Take care-hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have a clue about that fungus, but I consulted the Seek app (iNaturalist) and it suggested Red Chanterelle. In the process, I discovered that, with that app, I can change locations, and used yours in Michigan. Cool!
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to believe art camp's over -- or that I'm hearing ads for back-to-school supplies now. Some kids will go back to school in only two weeks. It still seems odd to me that school starts before Labor Day!
So much fun
ReplyDeleteYou are positively glowing:) Lovely art work..and a BFF..You are good:) Hope your issues resolve very soon Jeanie.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to you. What a lovely time you are having at the cabin by the lake. So sorry you had some lung issues to deal with though. And always, I love seeing your art. The whimsy of the two kittens is cute. Rick rowing on the lake at sunset is fun too. Glad you figured out the bark on the ground issue too. Your lake visits always seem so peaceful and just plain lovely.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your sicknesses! Hope all is well now. The art is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteJeanie, I'm sorry you were a bit under the weather while you were at the lake, I know you missed your swims and enjoying your favorite foods. I do hope you are feeling better now. I think your cards are lovely and to enjoy your painting shared with friends is even better. Glad Miss Lizzie was easy to pack up for you to head home and I'm just betting home was a happy site. Enjoy this weekend after being away and take care.......
ReplyDeleteJeanie, Happy Birthday to You! You look fabulous, and your art wonderful. So happy you can enjoy laketime with Kate and David, too. How special!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you had some health problems to contend with, but lots of nice times to balance it out. I like that old photo image you included. Are those fish on the table that somebody caught? Your lily pad painting is lovely! -Jenn
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you had fun and got a lot done despite not feeling tip-top. I love your painting of the water lilies and also the cats in the balloon!
ReplyDeleteGlad you had lots of fun and enjoyment creating your art. Sorry to hear about your health issues. The summer continues to speed by, enjoy it to the end. :)
ReplyDeleteloved this post Jeanie. Just pure life in action and you and Kate got thru it all having an awesome time. love your paintings; you inspire me to "get busy" with my many projects; especially December holiday card items.
ReplyDeleteWow Wow I am excited Kate will do a 2025 calendar! can't wait to order mine when she is ready!!! thanks for all your energy and photos you pour into these posts.
Despite the health hurdles and medication side effects, it’s great to hear you had a productive and enjoyable time. The lake setting and the chance to paint alongside others must have been wonderful. Your watercolor cards sound fantastic, and I can understand why you might want to adjust the pricing for them—they’re originals after all!
ReplyDeleteYour paintings, from the series inspired by Dick Hill’s work to the holiday-themed penguin and the sunset kayak scene, all show a lot of creativity and dedication. It’s impressive how you’re continually refining your work. The final piece based on your photograph looks promising—those yellow highlights should add the perfect touch.
Keep up the great work, and I’m excited to see what you create next!
I just posted a new blog post you can read it on www.melodyjacob.com.
Wat fun paintings! The lilies are gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteFunny about the woodpecker tearing the bark apart.
That is such an odd fungi, but striking color.
Nice you got in a visit with your cousin, too.
Sounds like a wonderful art retreat, even if your health wasn't what you expected it to be. She sounds like a cherished friend. Time well spent, for sure!
Glad your honey is home safe from his latest adventure.
Best to you and hope you are feeling lots better. :)
I think this is a wonderful thing that you do and in such a great location too. Your work always looks good to me.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing all the artwork you created! It sounds like such a wonderful and creative time together.
ReplyDeleteLove the photo of you and David examining the fishies when you were little ones. That's a classic.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy all your artwork! Your lily pads on the water is quite beautiful!
ReplyDeleteHow fun for both of you to get together and do this. Your special dinner looked quite delightful.
I hope you feel better my friend! Sending lots of prayers for you!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! ENJOY!
ReplyDelete💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
Are you are still dealing with these infections. Isn't MRSA very contagious?
ReplyDeleteLovely picture of you. You always look so happy.
Coconut Shrimp !! Yum
Love the paintings Cute Kitty in the balloon.
Hope you are well...
I like David G's comment above. I like your artistic output, too. So sorry to hear about your infections, which definitely is unpleasant. But, you had fun at the lake, anyway. Cheers to good times!
ReplyDeleteUgh - your health sounds even more hard to manage these days compared to mine and mine is pretty bad! I am still glad you had a great time at art camp but it's a bummer to not be able to jump in the lake on a hot day! I love your early birthday dinner tradition. And how wonderful to be in the company of a dear friend. My friend Kyria arrives tomorrow and we are so excited to host her!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you're having health problems 🫂 I enjoyed seeing your art. I like the kayak piece. All that food looks tasty, perfect for this hot summertime.
ReplyDeleteYou look so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry about your health issues.
The art work is amazing. Such fun.
All the best.
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY!
ReplyDeleteI'll bet that tree with the falling bark has some kind of infestation of bugs that the woodpecker is eating.
Well considering the health challenges you have been dealing with, you look fabulous and vibrant in that picture with your glass of white wine. Sounds like art camp was a success. I love your whimsical looking artwork! Happy Birthday !
ReplyDeleteI so love all of your paintings. Sometimes we can be our own worst judge. I know I can with my stitching and sewing. Looks like you may be getting a dead tree. The woodpeckers always know when a tree has bugs in it. Summer is winding down and the days are getting shorter now. It is dark again when I leave for work and I hate driving in the dark. UGH Hope you have a great weekend! Janice
ReplyDeleteYou have created beautiful works in this wonderful environment.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame that beautiful things always go by so quickly. Through your activities you made the time particularly intensive.
Thanks for your photos... so nice.
A hug for you.
Art camp is something that I have been missing for years. It looks like you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteYour art camp was very productive Jeanie! I like the painting of Rick in his kayak on the lake~ the cat adventures are cute too. Sorry you've been experiencing health challenges, but it sounds like you still had a lot of fun! Summer here is winding down, school starts for my grands next week! Much too early!
ReplyDeleteJenna
I'm so sorry you've been having health issues. It's always a tradeoff with meds, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteLove the kitty in the balloon:)
Lovely post
ReplyDeletePS. I'd love to purchase the balloon kitty card. Would you drop the detes in my contact form on the blog? I seldom use the email that I believe you have.
ReplyDeleteThanks;)
Great art and fun and... happy belated Birthday! To another great year in your life.
ReplyDeleteCute pic of the (g)olden days - so nice you are still in contact! And cute Lizzie...
Jeanie, I am so sorry you were sick. I love all of the cards that you painted, and $5 is way too little for a hand-painted card. Happy belated birthday!
ReplyDeleteI can read comments again. Can I post one?
ReplyDeleteMy blog's been on hold since June because my Internet connection has been so weak that, most days, anything interactive, or audiovisual, or otherwise needing a lot of bandwidth just wouldn't open. This blog and one other Blogspot blog I follow didn't open. Other (smaller) Blogspot blogs opened, but their comment sections didn't.
But here we are...cheers for you and the pictures!
Glad you had such a good time at the Lake, it sounds wonderful, I wish I had been there with you! Your art is really good, and ou get better every season! Stay well, hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteAs always, I so love your days at the Lake! After reading your Lake posts I dream and remember such happy days with my family at Shellcamp Lake, Gilmanton NH all those wonderful summers and some winters too. Well, I just love your painting of the ditch you just finished. Love the colors !!!
ReplyDeleteDawn P. Albany, GA
I'm sorry for all the disruptions MRSA has caused for you, Jeanie. Does this mean that the summer at the lake house is over? I feel like you just went there. This can't be. Your paintings are beautiful - the cats and the balloon are my favorite, but I like the other ones as well, the water lillies are beautiful! I'm not quite sure why you don't like the sunset at the lake with the kayak, but I also know that the artist herself is usually the loudest critic. I'm glad that Rick came back home from his bike hike all well and healthy. Have a good and pleasant weekend, hugs - Carola
ReplyDeleteyou look so beautiful and so happy, it sounds like such a wonderful time. i agree with you about what you are charging for your original paintings. i love the penguin on skates, that one is so cute!!
ReplyDeletewhenever you see chips of bark on the ground, look up...it is usually a woodpecker!!
Beautiful colourful pictures, don't change a thing! I'm sympathetic about all your health trials -so nice that Kate was there to keep you company, those are such happy restaurant photos.
ReplyDeleteWow! What a beautiful place and your art is brilliant. You look so pretty and happy in your photo. Thank you for sharing with FFO.
ReplyDeleteThe art camp sounds like fun. And if you were not well, at least you were in a lovely spot and shared it with a friend. I agree about raising prices for your hand-painted watercolor cards, even if only a little bit.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like it was such a fun week! Although I am sorry to hear you were having some medical issues. :( We are dealing with medication side effects still with Wyatt and it is so annoying but it beats some of the alternatives for him. :( It looks like you were very productive! I love the cats in the boat, and your ditch painting. That is gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteYou definitely need to charge more than $5!
Your postcards are so pretty Jeanie, my favourites being the ones with cats, of course!
ReplyDeleteSorry you haven't been feeling too well, hope your lung infections clear up soon.
I'm sorry you've had some health issues, Jeanie. I hope you are feeling better. Your art pieces are really nice. I especially like that first one. So nice of your friend to treat you at your favorite restaurant. Oh, those mischievous woodpeckers. They are constantly pecking at my trees and even on the electrical poles. I try to shoooo them away when I can. The photo of you and your cousin is wonderful, and so nice that you got to spend some time with him at the lake.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a beautiful rest of the Summer at the lake, Jeanie. Sending hugs, and hope you feel better.
~Sheri
I'm sorry to hear about the problems with your health. I hope you will feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteI think $5 is not enough for the cards. With handmade things the price should reflect the work otherwise people will just assume that you are using a template or it's not 100% handmade or something similar. I hope that helps.
