Celebrating 15 Years! And a GIveaway!

On December 20, 2007, I published my first post here on The Marmelade Gypsy. I'd just learned how to blog in an afternoon workshop that my then-boss held for those who were interested in blogging. Having already followed a few art blogs, I thought I might like to join in. This image was my first header, my Marmelade Gypsy.

Who could have imagined that 15 years later I would have overshared so much of my world! That deserves a little celebration and yes, a little drawing for some sort of thank you gift. More on that below.

But first a bit of a look back.

I had no photos in that post. (I know. Hard to believe.) And I made this bold statement:

"So, what's this blog going to be about? In no particular order, a place to post my art and share with my online art buddies, a spot to talk cooking and entertaining -- which of course means sharing recipes and other yummy things -- and of course, a spot to share bits and piece of my life -- family, friends, work, and all that other cool stuff!"

By the time of my second post, which might have been later that day, I put in this photo of Rick and me. (We've aged since then!) I'd just learned how to add pictures! And boy, did I ever learn about adding pictures!

I knew nothing about blogging when I started -- and yet 15 years later, that first vision I had for The Marmelade Gypsy holds true. I talk about all those things regularly -- art, cooking, family, entertaining, friendship (and much more) -- and for some reason, you manage to come back and read new posts, leave wonderful comments and have become friends.

You have "traveled" with me to France, the Netherlands, England, Quebec, Martha's Vineyard, Arizona, Utah, Las Vegas, and of course, the lake.

You say sweet things about our baby grands -- who aren't babies anymore! And you've followed my art journey from mixed media...

...to watercolor.

And boy, do you give back when you share your world in your blogs. I love reading about your adventures, your travels and your family. I save your recipes, take note of your book and film reviews, and am continually discovering the beauty and places in the states and countries in which you live. I have stayed at some of your homes, welcomed others to mine. I've learned new things, new ideas, new techniques.

In this blog land I've found a warm and supporting community, in some cases, more so than neighbors who live down the street. In fact, I "know" most of my blog friends far better than most of my neighbors (and I actually DO know my neighbors!) You have bought my art, reached out beyond the blog during challenging times, and in so many ways, enriched my life.

So, to say thanks to those old and new, a little giveaway  -- don't ask me what it is; I've been too swamped with Christmas to figure that out yet! All you have to do is leave a comment on this post between now and midnight on December 31 (we are Eastern time U.S. and comments will be based on the time and date Blogger puts in the comment box. If you are a no-reply blogger or do not have a blog or email address associated with your blog, please include your name and a way to contact you in your comment -- email, preferably. International comments are welcome.

Rick will pick the winner(s) the old-fashioned way -- drawing names from a hat (or some equally useful vessel!) -- on New Year's Day, 2023.

Thank you, my friends. You are the ones who make blogging fun.

  2. Congratulations! Now you made me go back and look to see when I first published. I have had three blogs. Four if you count my dabbling with WordPress. I'm sure you feel the way I do, that you've made many lovely friends across the world through your blog. What an amazing technological world we live in. It may have its faults. It might not be easy at times. But it sure is fun.

  4. Hello Jeanie,
Happy 15th blog anniversary. I do enjoy reading your blog post, seeing your photos, your wonderful art work, your sweet kitty and your book list. You can leave out my name for your drawing, I know you have a lot of followers.
Take care, have a great day!

  5. I think when we started to blog, Jeanie, none of us could have dreamed how it would expand our lives. I started purely as a way to post reports of my trips around the world in search of birds to help others who might be contemplating a visit to the same areas. It has grown far, far beyond that, especially during COVID confinement when none of us went anywhere. I have acquired a rich and interesting circle of friends who bring joy to my life every day. Blogging replicates life in all its ups and downs. Three people I got to know well have subsequently died (one of them I visited at his home in Britain), in other cases I have watched grandchildren grow up, shared a pandemic with them - and on and on. It has been a rewarding experience and continues to be so. Thank you, Jeanie, for being part of it.

  6. I am a more recent member of your blog family but I know what you mean because I have been blogging for over 16 years. You can probably tell I am not that computer savvy as I still have the same blog format that I picked out 16 years ago and never even figured out how to add pictures to the header--LOL! I am so glad I met you! Can't even remember how that happened. There are such wonderful people online that one would never have had the opportunity to meet otherwise and you are definitely one of them. You are a joy! Merry, merry Christmas to you and Rick!! :)

  10. What a lovely thing to do! I cannot remember when I began blogging, I must look it up.
That's pretty much what I have experienced blogging, I don't really have neighbours, at least none we socialize with.
    I enjoy your tales!

  11. Congrats on 15 years Jeanie. It's amazing how when many of us (most likely) starting blogging we had no idea where it would take us. My favorite line from your post is when you used the word over sharing. Many of us do that too, don't we? This is a great post to look back in 15 years, and happy holidays, and congrats again. hugs-Erika

  12. 15 years! Wow! I am not too far behind you - I started blogging in 2008! I know what you mean about feeling that you "know" your blog friends better than people you know IRL. That is how I feel as well. I am so very grateful for the community I found through blogging - including you! We are kindred spirits with our loves of reading, France, and cats! Here's to many more years of blogging!!

  15. Happy fifteen and here's to many more! I couldn't have dreamed the new friends and yes, worlds I'd find when I started blogging thirteen years ago. I'm amazed and delighted that I didn't listen to anyone who said, "Blogging is so last year." Happy, merry and healthy!

  18. Jeanie, Congratulations on 15 years of blogging! I’m so happy our blogging paths connected with each other. I had to look up and saw that I hit my first publish in June, 2011. After a little math, I guess I would say I’ve been blogging for about 11.5 years. I can’t believe how the time has flown by. You’re so right about making so many blogging friends, many of whom we’ve met in person. I have a blogging friend from Perth, Australia who came to the USA. We were able to meet up at Art Prize and I took her to Grand Haven and we walked the pier in Lake Michigan. We’ve kept in touch all these years. The blogging world has opened up a whole new world of friends!

  24. Happy blogaversary! It seems many of us who blog are hovering right around that same time period -- I started my blog back in May 2006. I guess it was all the rage then. It's a shame more people don't blog now. Maybe with the potential demise of Twitter people will rediscover it?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Not sure how I found you, Jeanie, but your blog has enriched my existence - inspired creativity and travel, yes , we do have that in common as well. So glad I found you!

  26. It has been a pleasure getting to "know" you through your blog. I think I came across you through our shared love of mixed media at the time. I seem to recall something about a journal (and maybe some type of swapping involved?). We have our shared love for our beautiful orange friends who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge (perhaps they frolic with each other on the other side). You've been to Paris; I want to go to Paris. And we both live in Michigan. Here's to more years of enjoying your wonderful blog (and life). I sincerely hope that one day we will meet. Perhaps 2023 will be the year!

  37. Happy 15th Blogversary, Jeanie. I started the first of my blogs (now private) in 2008 and the one I still write publicly on in 2011. I agree with you - I know some of my long-time blog friends as well as some people I meet face to face. I both celebrate and grieve with them and enjoy reading about what's going on in their lives. Keep writing, Jeanie ad I'll keep reading! Barb

  38. I like the pictures of the Marmelade Gypsy. Mail can be sent to Boxholder, PO Box 322, Gate City VA 24251-0322. (Not everyone at the post office knows my business name but they know I'm the Boxholder.) What I most want for Christmas is money, but books are also welcome.

  39. Congratulations on 15 years of blogging, Jeanie. Although I created my first post in 2005, it took me another 13 months to get serious about blogging. At the time, I was the moderator of a Yahoo group and was not quite ready to let that go. But for me, the writing was on the wall and I was finally ready to move on. And, like you, I am still blogging, but I blog every day. I am so glad you are blogging because so many have gone to facebook and Instagram. I'm not on either of those social media sites.

I enjoyed seeing the photos of you and Rick and you and the Marmalade Gypsy. I enjoyed your retrospective, too. Thank you for your lovely art, photos, and words of wisdom. Keep blogging, dear friend.

  44. Jeanie, what a fabulous recap of 15 years of blogging, what a milestone you have reached. I am so happy we connected in the fall of 2016 over our genuine appreciation of the beauty of Martha’s Vineyard. I look forward to all of your posts and many more years of blogging. Thank you for all of your visits and comments on my blog. Wishing you and Rick a Merry Christmas and thanks for giving us a glimpse into your life!

  50. It's amazing how close our 'starting dates' were. I began my blog in April of 2008, and it wasn't long after that we connected. One of my first readers was Arti, and she's still with us, too. We've lost some good friends, made many more, and lived through most of the things that everyone has to cope with: illness, death, retirements, worries over this or that -- and yet here we are. I smiled at your mention of your mixed media days. This past week I looked again at the notebooks you made. I haven't used a single one -- they're so beautiful I haven't wanted to mess them up. Maybe 2023 will be the year I find a use worthy of them -- we'll see!

Great pic of you two, and, oh, yes, years have gone by, same here.

  54. I would have to go back and look but I think I started blogging in 2008 or 2009. Course while I was working I never really had the time to jump around replying to blogs to get followers. It was not until around 2015 that I was able to do that and that is when I found all of you great folks. Don't you just love going back and seeing things you posted way back when?

  55. The day I found your blog was a really good day in my book. I always enjoy reading your posts, they're always interesting. Like you, I had no real idea about what I was doing when I started my blog, but it had been such an adventurous and rewarding journey. I've made some wonderful online friends across the globe, some of whom I have met. And I am thankful that you are one of those friends, Jeanie.

And so glad we connected way back then, and glad to have had your posts in my life ever since. (Although I would probably be thinner had I never come across the Amazing Peanut Butter Bars...).
