On my last morning at the lake, Rick and I did our "color tour." Our plan was to venture north to the town of Petoskey, lunch with our friends, Pat and Susan, meet up with oldest kid Greg and then just fool around, ending up the day back at the cottage. Alas. It wasn't raining, but it wasn't glorious sunshine of the two days before. The colors were muted.
But they were still lovely as we made the 45 minute drive north, occasionally seeing blue sky, the farther north we went.
The day was shaping up quite nicely!
It was good to see Pat and Susan again. They retired to Petoskey several years ago but we have much in common and the conversation was as lively as if we'd seen them days before!
Then it was off to visit Greg. He lives in what he calls The Tiny House, between Petoskey and the village of Harbor Springs. I was glad I had an extra Abdul yard sign, which he immediately set out by the road.
Greg's Tiny House is nestled onto a woodland lot and there was a wonderful firepit outside.
We sat around just enjoyed really terrific conversation until it was time to leave.
Next destination? Harbor Springs. This is the kind of tiny, charming village you would see in a Hallmark movie, with cute shops on the main street and, one block to the west, the expanding view of Little Traverse Bay. Rick happily checked out the real estate signs.
The town was decked for the season with a skeleton theme. I'll show you more of these closer to Halloween, but they did have a "photo booth."
There was still plenty of color to be seen in some of the displays . . .
. . . the holiday motifs. . .
. . . and the still-beautiful flowering boxes.
Many of the boats had been hauled in for the season, but a number remained and we enjoyed a walk along the harbor boardwalk.
And, after we finished our walk through the rest of town, headed back toward home via the road along the beach. These "summer cottages" are a tad large for me! But they can probably afford a cleaning lady!
But I wouldn't mind this for a front-window view!
I'll leave you with a few views of our final destination, and longtime readers of Marmelade Gypsy will have seen similar photos in the past years. This is Treetops Resort in Gaylord.
If you are a golfer, you may have seen this spot in the summer as it often hosts PGA tournaments.
In the winter it is a ski resort and the views are beautiful, with the hilly terrain adding to the scope of the scenery.
Rick had to check out the ski lift mechanism! One does feel at the top of the world.
Timing is everything and what started as a gloomier day had turned beautiful. Now, with the western sun hitting the colors, it was dazzling.
Our day wrapped up with a stop at Treetops' bar and then dinner in town. All good -- but they paled in comparison to a glorious day out, time with friends and with Greg. . .
. . . and all that color!

Beautiful full day! I really like seeing you with friends and Greg. I’m both looking forward to the election results and dreading what trumps and his cult will do. Safe travels home!
Dear Jeanie, it looks like a wonderful time for you all! And what glorious, spectacular colours and views! Gorgeous series of photos.
Ahhhh.... lovely to see all the glorious color you found! Thanks to the unexpected heat, we're having an unusual autumn here. No overnight transformations, but pockets of color coming and going here and there. Looks like you found some wonderful views!
All that colour, indeed! How great for you.
The trees could not be more beautiful. I love that you carry an extra sign in your trunk!
I so enjoyed all of your fall photos-not much color yet where I live.
Those tree colors are spectacular! I'm sure I've never seen anything like that in person.
Such beautiful colors! We don't have those over here yet. Most trees are still kind of greenish.
That sounds like a really lovely last day. I'm glad the sun came out for you and you go to see all the beautiful colors.
All those "burning" autumn colors are gorgeous. I wouldn't know where I would find something like that in my area.
You have captured some amazing scenes of the gorgeous fall trees. I like the way you said that you were going to be "just fooling around" Lol ... Looks like a fun day ...
Wow Jeanie, the fall colors are looking gorgeous there.
I would like to walk on the boardwalk near the lake.
The town does look pretty. I would not mind living in a tiny home, less to clean. Take care, enjoy your day and happy weekend.
Well, to fun company at least! Grey, grey, grey here.
To tiny hoses!
And Halloween-fun!
And such a great place where you live.
Thank you for sharing, especially the water!
Early in the fall I thought we were not going to have much of a display but of late the colours have been quite vibrant. The scarlet of the maples seems to have ceded ground to the gold of the oaks, but all is very beautiful.
Wow, your fall colors are gorgeous! What a wonderful day to see our beautiful world and visit friends. A relaxing time around a firepit on a chilly day sounds divine.
Aren't the colors amazing this autumn? Those views are beautiful. And it's fun to see the views from your day out and about. It looks like you had a wonderful day and enjoyed some good company too. I hope you have a super weekend ahead. hugs-Erika
You look so good!! Love his tiny house..Glorious weather here also.A beautiful fall!!
What a glorious day adventure. The colors are beautiful. I like seeing Greg's tiny house in the woods too. It looks just perfect for him. Visits with friends and family and a day adventure is the very best.
Quite simply, I hope that Abdul wins!!!
Great fall colors. Ours are much more muted. I love the late burst of marigolds, too.
Our state has some gorgeous colors this time of year. Janice
What a wonderful fall day you both had. I love the gorgeous photos of the trees and it sounds like the perfect day.
Michigan is so beautiful!! Although that ski lift to see the trees would give me a panic attack. LOL. I love to see your photos though.
Oh Jeanie what beautiful colors...perfect Fall foliage and what a wonderful goodbye to the lake time. Don't ya love it when a day turns out so pleasant and wonderful? Sounds like you and Rick picked the perfect day to do your touring. Greg's tiny house is perfect in the woods...that would be just the right size for us, but we invested in a motor home and it has become a 'tiny home' for us and the plus is we can 'pick it up' and move anytime. 🥰 hugs my friend. 🍁🍂
Those fall leaves are stunning! Such vibrant colors. Harbor Springs looks like a fun little town. Have a wonderful weekend Jeanie!
What a great day, when what you lost with the weather you made up for by the conversation, and then the sun came out when you really wanted to appreciate the views. Sone beautiful places around there, indeed!!
Happy fall. Lovely post. I think it’s a stretch to call those homes cottages. Enjoy your weekend Jeannie.
What a nice trip that you took us on. I just realised that that was how I originally found you, taking us on your UK tour. Always a pleasure to travel with you.
What a lovely way to spend a day. Beautiful color. Ours is mostly gone except the golds.
Cathy
Great pictures... Having a good time
Autumn is growing deeper and deeper.
Wowza! Glorious colors!
Plus, it was fun to visit with friends, Greg, and you even checked out the other locations, too. A lovely day!
Enjoy your weekend!
🍁✨🍁
What a great time you had. It looks like the colours were at their peak.
I would love to have that tiny house nestled in the trees like that, sitting around the campfire. How perfect!
Wow, how gorgeous! I think we have 10 leaves turned in our yard, and they are dropping anyway, What a fabulous weekend and you are glowing....glad to see you're feeling better. Can't wait for a bit of color, going to the shop and may head north a bit and see if we can find some?
At least the orange and purple of the floral display is something I can see around here. As for your foliage, even the dullest is spectacular to me! I'm always surprised when someone in the northern states or Canada mentions taking boats out of the water for winter. Then, I remember: ice, or at minimum not so great sailing weather. I've seen ice or snow here only a dozen times in the past twenty-five years, and sometimes the snow is only flurries. Occasionally, I've sailed in January wearing only tee shirts and a light jacket!
Lots of amazing color! And yet it looks quite warm there, with Rick in shorts and a t-shirt. I love Greg's "tiny house" -- and the Abdul sign! I've never been to Petoskey. One of these days, when we next get to Michigan!
What a lovely time you had! The colour on the trees is gorgeous!
Lovely fall post
What spectacular color. I used to say that on a rainy day, the colorful leaves brighten your mood. Karen (Back Road Journal)
It gave me such a good feeling to go through each photo. A wonderful post Jeanie, thank you!
Wonderful autumnal colours! We've currently got a storm blowing through.
What a wonderful way to spend your last day at the lake! The colors are absolutely stunning, and I loved seeing the photos of Harbor Springs and Greg's tiny house. It's always nice when a day that starts out gray turns into something so beautiful.
I love all the autumn color you shared. Northern Michigan is so beautiful. I'm glad to share your great day.
so beautiful
Jeanie, your photos of your trees up north are so stunning! We just got back from a color tour today and our colors weren’t as great as yours, but we’ll take what we can. It has been years since we’ve been to Petoskey and Harbor Springs. With us living in a condo, no signs at all are permitted here. But that may be good thing because this area is so ridiculously conservative it drives me crazy!
Jeanie, it looks like your last day was fabulous that included beautiful fall colors. We are finally seeing a little color!
Beautiful photos, Jeanie. Spending time with good friends is the best! Hugs to you!
Beautiful Autumn colours in those trees Jeanie. Great Halloween decorations in that small town. I had to laugh about what you said regarding those huge houses! I say the same when I see those gigantic palaces - I'm sure they can afford cleaning and gardening staff :) :)
Beautiful photos of beautiful fall colors!
Hello Jeanie :)
Breathtaking autumn scenery, the colurs of the trees are so spectacular, and we have nothing to compare here in Portugal. The photo of you and Rick with your friends is lovely and Gregs woodland home doesn't look all that tiny, but it does look newly painted and welcoming. Harbor Springs looks so attractive and the floral displays are gorgeous.Warm hugs to you for sharing so much of your day out.
All the best
Sonjia.
Hi Jeanie
Such beautiful autumn colors and a good time with friends--it all sounds perfect! It is hard to believe this is the last week in October. This is the first time since we've lived here that we have not gotten any snow in October.
Oh, wow... It is beautiful up there! We won't have any fall color until November/December, but a few trees around denton are just beginning to show a change. Such a nice day for you all!!! Glad you and Rick got to see his son (love the long porch and house!) and your friends.
Glad you made it safely home,
Barb :)
You had such a good time and I really enjoyed seeing your photographs.
The Autumn colours are so beautiful.
All the best Jan
That was a wonderful tour!
