Homefront: Early Autumn at the Ditch

Before I went back to the lake, I took a couple of jaunts to the ditch. It was still early, so color hadn't fully kicked in but you could see the promise of it in some of the golds and a bit of red.

There were plenty of brown tones, too. Those soft browns of tall reeds that have turned.

Two ducks were taking in the sun on the rocks on this particularly beautiful day.

This one was going through the full bathing routine and I was quite impressed that she could twist his neck around so far and be so thorough while standing on one leg. (At first, I thought she only had the one!)

The foliage is changing. I don't know what these are but they looked very fallish with their golden colors.

And I suspect the birds will soon find these berries if they are edible.

Right now, most of the paths (maybe all) are closed as they are planning to repave them. The ones you can walk on are pretty rocky. But you can still get some good views.

I suspect when I return from the lake, most of the leaves will be gone.

I do wish the season lasted a bit longer! But I'm maxxing it out while it's here!

Such lovely pictures! Unfortunately some of the plants here look less like beautiful fall and more like the hot summer was too hard on them.

The colors are lovely, but as you noted, all too fleeting. Hopefully there will still be some when you return home, jeanie.

They look like the black walnuts we have in our yard. They come down hard on the ground, go black and the critters go crazy for them. Super stinky too. Pretty though. Great fall collection. Happy Autumn! Cheers, Ivy.

Such beautiful photos, Jeanie. Thank you for sharing your fall landscapes. The ducks were fun. Could the fruit be quinces? All the best, my friend!

Those paved paths will be nice!

It would be great if peak autumn lasted longer. I think the ditch is looking lovely, and it looks like you had some really nice walks. I hope it wasn't too cold at the lake this morning. It was 35 at my house-chilly. Stay warm. gugs-Erika

Beautiful! And those ducks are charming -- I think that "one-legged" one was showing off for you! Glad to see you taking advantage of this Indian summer and getting out for a walk. And thanks for the lovely pictures!

Some trees here are on the downside, but others are still on the upside.

Those round, dry, yellowish-green fruity looking things? Look like black walnuts to me. The thick yellowish coating will fall off leaving rough nutshells covered in black goop. The goop can be used for fabric dye; will stain hands if you touch the shells. When it dries, after the shells have lain out in the sun (and rain) for a few days, the shells can be cracked and the nuts eaten.

Similar looking, but more oblong, nuts are "white walnuts" or butternuts. They are the only kind of walnuts I like enough to bother shelling. They're becoming rare.

Lovely Autumn photos from close to home, different to your lake photos but just as interesting.
I was going to say maybe walnuts for those round green things, we don't have the black Walnuts here but English walnuts which are a bit different

It only seems 5 minutes since you returned to the lake for the 1st time this year. Shakespeare was right. "Summer's lease hath all too short a date", but Autumn has a magic all of its own.

Hello Jeanie,
Beautiful views of the Ditch! I like the ducks. We should start to see more of the winter ducks here. Great photos. Take care, enjoy your day!

I’m not sure whether you realize, Jeanie, but the duck at the left of your picture above is a male Wood Duck, moulting back into his finery after a period of eclipse. Take a look at a picture of what he will look like soon, and keep an eye out for him in case he chooses to remain at The Ditch. He’s even better looking than Rick!

These are some really lovely photos! I'm finding that I see more autumn colors than my camera can catch at this point as everything looks more colorful to me but still seems mostly green or brown in the camera lens.

Thank You for getting out for that walk and sharing your photos! Such pretty sights! I wonder what those golden balls are? Do you know what kind of tree they are growing on?

I think autumn is my favorite season. It comes when we are tired of the summer heat, with all the beautiful colors.

Lovely photos, and so calm and peaceful. The only thing that has changed here are honey locust which are gold and instantly dropping. I've been driving 30-45 miles a day this week, and saw one maple tree changing, nothing else, we are very green here, and yes it is very late, should be at peak this week and next and nothing has happened. Hugs, Sandi...be careful of that foot!!!!

Just ducking in to echo an earlier commenter's ID - yep, those are black walnuts. Very unripe in the photo. When ripe and fallen to the ground, broken open, the hulls will stain your fingers nearly black. (If you're inclined, they make good fabric dyes too.) XOXO

Oh, how I LOVE autumn. Always believed being born in October just imbedded in me this love the autumn season. Truly is my FAV season of all (except I also love the Xmas holiday season as well). While our trees will change color down here in SW GA, it will be later in November and not the brilliant colors from my Midwest/Yankee roots (Ohio and New Hampshire and Mom's home state of Mass. and Dad's home state of NY). Bring on Fall !!!! Dawn P. Albany, GA

Your fall pictures are so pretty, Jeanie! Now I am wondering what those lemon looking things are too. And the red berries would be indeed enticing to any bird. Hoping they are edible and a delight for the birds.

Thanks for the beautiful pictures Jeanie. We don't get to see those things here in Texas. Love to you both.

Oh Jeanie, every time you visit the Ditch and take your wonderful photos, I want to retreat to nature. The fall colors are already starting to come about, and it's just so pretty and peaceful there. That duck picture is delightful. I'm glad you got a chance to visit again before driving to the lake. Thanks for these splendid pics today!

Steve Reed said...

According to my plant identifier app, the mystery plant is a black walnut, and the red berries are Siberian crabapples -- which are toxic to people, dogs and cats, but I'm not sure about birds!

Auf deinen Bildern sieht man, wie schön der Herbst ist. Dort am Wasser würde ich auch gern gehen. Schön, dass du uns mitgenommen hast.

Beautiful! We don't get much foliage here because the wind blows the leaves off the trees before they have a chance to change much, so when we see some colorful leaves, we enjoy the sight. I also love bare trees and the lines and shapes of the branches.

I agree with you...the beautiful leaves add to much wonderful color but they fall too quickly. Karen (Back Road Journal)

Thanks Jeanie for sharing your pics...I especially loved the ducks...I want to cuddle them but I do know that is impossible. Have you ever heard of Call Ducks? They are the cutest little ducks...replicas of a pekin duck but in miniature...they weigh about 1-2 #s and are very loud for such a small duck. We had them on the ranch in N.M. and I wanted to cuddle them too. Autumn is waning in some parts of the country, we must enjoy it while we can. Hugs my friend.

Jeanie, so many lovely photos. Autumn is my favorite and I love seeing it your area way before I see it here. Take care of yourself!

It's beautiful Jeannie. I agree, it would be lovely if such beautiful nature could last longer. Your expression 'looking fallish' make me smile. I often don't know the names of everything outside, and I like your choice of word : ))

The soft brown of the turned reeds is my favourite part. We have a lot of reed along the water in the Netherlands and it looks best at this time of year. Good that you got a few walks in on the ditch before the paths close for repaving.

I'm wondering if those fruits are quinces! Do the leaves have a kind of droopy aspect to them ...quince trees can look kind off slouchy to me. The fruits are rock hard and if you pressure cook while they're yellow you'll tell if they're quince when you open them as they have a beautiful scent.

Enjoy your walks at the Ditch; autumn is beginning to shine there. Beautiful photos.

Hello Jeanie :)
The autumnal colours at the ditch are lovely and so are your photos..It is nice to see the ducks, I wonder if they will stay. There is no sign of autumn here as yet. It's still quite hot at 29 degrees, and some days 30, so it may take a while before the leaves change colour and start to fall.
All the best

I think those green balls might be black walnuts. They have a green husk that surrounds the nut itself. As I recall, it eventually dries and falls off. My mother loved black walnuts, and they used to go to Missouri to get a big supply each fall. They'd let them dry for a couple of months, and then crack them. They're hard as can be -- we used to do it with hammers out on the driveway.
