Postcards From the Lake: September Flies!

What happened to September? It's like a magician's trick -- Now you see it, now you don't! Well, we still have some time but boy, it's flying by!

I headed to the lake to welcome my new refrigerator. I suspected Rick might want to sit this trip out, having been away from his own home for so long. The new fridge is lovely and the delivery couldn't have been better. Right on time, two very strong guys managed to get it in without having to remove my heavy wooden door!

That said, within 36 hours it began to leak from the front and I've been in customer service limbo for the past few days.  They will send a technician but given that it's at the cottage 160 miles from home, it's going to be a scheduling trick. Stay tuned!

My cousin David and his wonderful wife Bonnie were here for the weekend, so I was only a little bit lonely! Spending time with these two is always a treat. I'd seen David this summer but hadn't seen Bonnie in two years! So it was a fun reunion.

We also spent time with another cousin, Jack. This is the three of us in the long-ago. (Me, David and Jack, who is eight and ten months older than we are.)

We grew up. (Or should I say we grew old?) Time is cruel.

Despite good family time, this was far from my best lake trip. Without Rick, it was very quiet. The lake itself was quiet with very few boats and no neighbor activity. Even the farm market was lacking people, which made shopping fast but probably not great for the merchants! (The sunsets, however, were September-spectacular, with pink and purple skies. I nabbed this photo right after we returned from dinner and it's pretty -- but five minutes before, as we were driving home, it was spectacular!)

The quiet is lovely in many ways, but I'd had plans for my "home alone" time that were thwarted by myself. I forgot to pack the power supply for the computer and consequently, found those times a little frustrating. No evenings of streaming, no finishing the slide show I was working on, no blogging. (It's so hard to enjoy your beautiful blogs with only a small phone screen.) I had email correspondence I was eager to tackle. And, my computer connects to my bluetooth speaker so at least the music would sound better than our old radio or from my phone. Consequently, I've not been checking in on you blog pals -- and I know after five days, I will probably not catch up! (I will admit, Lizzie is good company, but she doesn't speak English and my "cat" is limited.) It was a little startling to realize I have a bit of an addiction to my computer.

But until Saturday, when I left, we couldn't have asked for nicer weather. September is always a lovely month at the lake. The smells and tints of early fall settle in and every walk is filled with change and anticipation of what is to come.

There is not yet a lot of color on the hardwoods, but it is definitely getting there. In another few weeks, it should be absolutely stunning.

The contrasting colors of change are always so beautiful.

The fungi has returned in force! Check out these guys!

Then take a look, with the blade of the hedge clippers for scale. So tiny!

These were much bigger.

I did tackle our weedy beach again. Weeds have an annoying tendency to grow back, even when you think you've nabbed the roots. And yes, I painted. This one will turn into a note card, part of a series (although it is a 5x7 and I may sell the original.)

I did a couple of pages in my Sketchbook Scavenger Hunt. The one on the left was "An Interesting Leaf." The other was "Something That Inspires Creativity."

When I was up north the last time, I started this piece, from a photo I took in the Cotswolds in 2018.

I more or less finished it, although I think it might need another wash of shadows on the right-hand side. The golden Cotswold stone isn't as differentiated as I think it should be with the light.

And I read, knocking off three books in three days. I'm not that fast a reader so it gives you an idea of how much time I had when I don't have a computer or other at-home things to deal with! Those books included an unexpected pleasure that will surely be on my top ten list this year. And, if I prioritized it, you'd find it right near the top. (And, much to my own shock and surprise, it's about football.)

So, it's back to the routine. Resettling at home (though I'll be north at least a couple more times).

I suspect many more leaves will have fallen by then!

  1. Glad you got the new frig, but sorry about the leak. Aggravating!
I don't think you three have changed all that much!!! What fun photos.

  5. Good grief! Leaking right off the bat. *head shaking*
Love the artwork. I know I would be at quite loss without my laptop. I think I would also be surprised at how much. I can't use my phone for email or streaming. Limited to voice texting (quite humorous and need an interpreter) and those old fashioned things--phone calls. But if I had no laptop...I think I would find myself using that tiny phone screen somehow. And I might have to read books with my magnifying glass and get headaches--ROFL! Playing with paints sounds like the best choice. ;)

  6. I hope the fridge isn't too much trouble to sort out. Your leaf painting is the "spitting image" of the original! It's always nice to see your art. I imagine some quiet time away from the internet was probably a good thing, even if it didn't seem like it at the time. :)

  7. Arghgh those appliances that look nice and aren't. The joys of a cottage, I guess.I do all my online activities on phone or Fire tablet, haven't had a laptop in years.
    I'm glad you painted!

  11. So sorry about the fridg. Even though you didn't have your computer, you created some outstanding art, had time with family and took some wonderful photos. I agree Sept is flying by. Have a nice Sunday.

  12. Isn't it amazing what you discover about yourself when you are forced to quiet all of the things that you HAVE TO DO when the tools aren't available? Good luck with the fridge shenanigans

  13. The new fridge got down to business right away. As they say, "they don't make them like back in the old days". Good luck with getting it taken care of. Lovely art, I love the cat that's painting, it made me smile. Have a good week, Jeanie.

  14. How awful about your new fridge. I hope they get it taken care of quickly but with you living so far away, I know that will be difficult. A delightful visit with Bonnie, David and Jack, and you were a sweet baby, great photo! Your artwork is great! The Cotswolds always dear to my heart. My dear other half does not think we can move to the top of the mountain as I have often joked about. No internet he said! :)

  15. Jeanie, I am so sorry that the new fridge is leaking, that can be so stressful! The art is fabulous, I always enjoy seeing what you are painting. Happy Fall!

  16. Wow to those reds that you picked up in a couple of your photos. Maybe we are addicted to computers, but they are certainly tools that we have incorporated into our lives.

  17. What's with new fridges? My friend has had repair folks out four times for her new refrigerator---it's only a few months old.

    Love the art!

  18. Oh dear! I hope you can get the fridge sorted out.

I love the Autumn and I did enjoy your Autumnal photographs.
    Fabulous art too.

Take care, sending my good wishes.

  19. A trip full of mixed blessings with beautiful skies, family warmth, and creative moments, even if the fridge and forgotten power supply made things a little trickier than planned

  20. Is there an ice maker to leak? That is too bad.
You made good use of your time. I am horribly addicted to my phone and computer. I truly wish I could lock it away for the day and only bring it out an hour a day. It stifles my creativity.

  22. That is a shame the fridge is leaking. There's always something, isn't there?? And I bet you'll out read me this month. (grin-I know it is not a competition) because I haven't read all that much at all. I look forward to reading what those books were. And it looks like you had some nice time at the lake. Happy new week. hugs-Erika

  23. In general, this post reads like a ringing endorsement for leaving your computer at home: more reading, painting, weeding the beach -- you were amazingly productive! And great art work, too! I get it about the quiet being Too Quiet, but it looks like you were able to settle into it and enjoy the time you had. Beautiful photographs!!

So sorry about your refrigerator debacle, but I don't think having the computer with you would have made any difference at all in that quarter. Sure hope it is fixed soon. But... the cottage is 160 miles from home? I had no idea the cottage was so far from you -- with all the doctor's visits you've had this summer, that adds up to a lot of driving time!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh boy,and good thing-bad thing trip! So aggravating about that fridge, and the lack of a power supply for the computer. How we are dependent on those things! But the sketch is great, the sunset is beautiful, you had welcome visitors, and you read three books. So more good than bad, yes?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh, the joys of life's highs and lows. I remember planning a private retreat one time and forgetting things. I definitely didn't realize how reliant I was and how I had to be more creative. It was a challenge, but nice in the long run. September is FLYING!!!! I loved seeing those pops of red and how nature is so vibrant in the fall. Boo, on the refrigerator leak. NO FUN! I hope it gets fixed really quick. You are fantastically creative. I can't draw ANYTHING. I took a watercolor class and it was suggested I may need to try a different hobby. LOL! Oh, well, I sure tried.

  26. Sorry to read your fridge is leaking. To be honest, I was without a computer for five days once thanks to as squirrel eating through my line, and I nearly went insane. I didn't realize at the time how dependent I was on it. I'm also a slow reader and I read every word, unlike most readers who skim. I adore your cat painting the other cat. It is fabulous. Looks like autumn is starting to appear in your part of the world.

  27. I've done that before left home without my computer cables - I think it's now called a digital detox!! What a pain thought, as is the leaky fridge at a distance. Still great news the weather is lovely and the sunsets are perfect!

  28. Thank you for the update of the ending of summer. Just show how lost we are without our cables. I am happy you got through a few books though. I guess you can also make nice walks in the area. I am sure you are eager to come home and sit down in front of the computer for a few hours.

  29. It must be the absolute pinnacle of frustration to have a new fridge and find it leaking as soon as it is installed. Grrrr!

  30. Beautiful first pic, but yikes on the fridge! At least you ha a nice reunion. Stunning lake-pic indeed. And, ohhh, sweet Lizzie. I love the cushion, too and deep red leaves. As I read I have mushroom with tofu :-)
    Love all your sketches!

  31. Hello,
Sorry to hear the news about the new refrigerator, I hope it will be taken care of. Your fall images are beautiful and I love the flowers and the lovely sunset.
Cute photo of Lizzie. I like the before and after photos of you and your cousins. Your paintings are beautiful, the Cotswold is a favorite. Take care, have a wonderful week.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The changing color is also beautiful. Love your gorgeous sunset too. A new refrigerator should be a blessing, not a leaky curse! I've got my fingers crossed that it's handled by now.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh, I hear you about not having your computer when you need it. We've been out of town for four days, and I have too many blog posts on my feed, so I'm skipping most and reading just a few favorites. Your fall colors are looking lovely! I hope the refrigerator issue is just a missing drip pan!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Very annoying that the new fridge began leaking right away :-( I hope it's fixed soon. Bill forgot his power cord once when we went away for several days. It was an adjustment, but my computer was there so he could use that for some things. We don't realize how much we rely on them for all sorts of things until we don't have them readily available. But you had other good things like books and creating fun art. Hurray for that!

  35. Maybe a blocked defrost thingy..Lol I Googled.I know it's not funny.Big expenses and a glitch never fun:(. We are so very addicted to our tech toys.Thank goodness for art etc..And wow..some nice work there Jeanie. That pic of the three toddlers.Priceless.

  36. I was sitting in the eye doc's office myself this week, and tried to use my phone to respond to comments. It was such a terrible pain, as well as being a reminder of why I never use my phone for posting, commenting, and so on. It's just too small, and typing is too much of a frustration. I like my big screen and a keyboard.

Sorry about that refrigerator issue; that's a pain, too. I hope by now it's been sorted out, or will be soon. As for frustrations over forgetting your power pack -- that reminds me of the times I've gone off to some lovely place and then discovered I didn't put a card in the camera. I still haven't come to the place where I enjoy using my phone as a camera (and I don't have a fancy new model), so there have been a couple of trips to nearby towns to buy a new card. When it's that or going home, well: the choice is obvious!

  37. Sounds like a good visit at the cottage. So glad you had company, such cute childhood photos. The sunset looks gorgeous. Love seeing the pretty fall color.
September is flying by. Happy new week. Sorry about your new fridge.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Oh no; sorry to hear the new fridge is leaking already. What a beautiful sunset you captured! Our lake is very quiet this time of year as most people have already taken out their boats and jet skis and even their docks.

  39. I'm going to guess the football book you loved was about the school for the deaf that has a football team? I'm blanking on the name of the book but have heard it mentioned on a couple of book podcasts. It sounds great!

I am quite addicted to my phone. If I didn't have access to it, it would be a real struggle. My phone is basically my computer, though, as I don't have a laptop (besides my work one) that I use regularly. I'd like to get a small chromebook or something like that so I have something to use but keep putting it off.

That is such a bummer about the new fridge leaking, though! Ugh! I hope you get the issue fixed soon!

  40. I'm sorry to hear that you are still having problems with the frig. I do hope you can get that sorted our fast. You are an amazing artist and love looking at your paintings! The cat one is great. Happy fall and have a nice week.

  41. Jeannie, I love to see your pics of the lake but so sorry to hear about your fridge leaking. What a pain to have to make another unexpected trip. I also love your talent with painting...drawing etc. I would not be able to live without my computer because as I age, I find I need bigger everything. Have a great and Blessed day. 42. Well, you certainly were productive with your art. I like that amusing cat painting. As for David, he’s rehabbing well and will start rigorous PT at Straub starting on October 6. I have decided to pursue my interest in Korea so you will learn something new about it every Monday on my blog.

  43. Art, music, and books, what more can you ask for? I know what you mean about being addicted to the computer. It sounds like you made the best of the quiet time. So glad you got the refrigerator, but so sad it started leaking. Ugh! Your art pieces and natures art were all beautiful and wonderful.

  44. Oh Jeanie, I always love seeing the brilliant colors in your area with the beginning of the Fall season and throughout the whole season. And the sunset is very pretty. Sounds like you had a nice visit with your cousin, and you know how much I love those old treasured photos that you share. The painting of the simple leaf is my favorite, and I really do like the Cotswolds art too, it's so charming. So, you are back home now? I hope you get the refrigerator situation all taken care of. Looking forward to more Fall photos of your lovely state.

Happy first day of Autumn Jeanie!

  45. Oh the leak! i am so sorry you are having fridge problems. It can be very frustrating I totally understand. I am so happy you spent time with family! How wonderful! I adore your artwork and love the cats and the houses. Thank you for your visit to my blog. Wishing you a lovely Autumn. I do love your photography so much. All the best and have a wonderful week!

  46. Hi Jeanie! I know the pain of needing a new refrigerator — I had to replace two since moving to CO. One for our kitchen and one for our basement.. They are nice and modern, but things don't last as long as the older models used to. I also know how we are all addicted to our phones and computers. I used to devote one "unplug" day a week, but I have to admit I haven't been doing that lately. I did have a serious eye issue for a few weeks that made it hard to read, so for the first time in a long time, I listened to an audiobook. It was an "Unfinished Love Story: by Doris Kerns Goodwin, about her husband. It was a good audio as he wrote many speeches for Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. It is this month's book club book selection. Love your watercolors! The cat portrait scene is adorable!

  47. Wonderful artwork! We had such a dry summer that I think our autumn may skip the beautiful hues of red and go straight to brown!

    ReplyDelete
  48. It sure is lovely at cottage this time of the year. Your art work is fantastic---so colorful and reminds me of folk art and in some cases whimsicality like the artist painting the cat.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Love your Cotswolds painting.. I also like to leaf! It's a shame tat sunsets change so quickly..it's hard to get the perfect picture...

  50. How frustrating that the refrigerator project is not completed. I know how you feel about blogging or reading blogs on a phone -- I hate it! I hope to get a tablet soon so I won't be as limited as I was in Greece.

    ReplyDelete
  51. A leaking new fridge right from the start is beyond frustrating.
We probably all are quite addicted to our computers. We just had friends from Germany staying here for a few days and I didn't open my laptop - it was so lovely! But it certainly is different when you're on your own. I think reading and making art are a wonderful result of that computer-free time. Is the Cotswold village Castle Combe? It reminds me of that place.

  52. Enjoyable post.. nice paintings

  53. Oh, I just love the photos of you three as small children and then as you are now. It makes me smile.

  54. Did they put the tray that collects water in the right place? This happened to me a long time ago.
That sunset was lovely! Pretty purples.
Your artwork is so colorful. And the trees around you are starting to do the same.
Hope you get that fridge fixed! And soon!

  55. That's a shame about the brand new fridge leaking already and you live so far away to get it serviced! Sounds like not having the computer time gave you time to paint which you made some lovely pieces. When we go back home (winter in Florida) for a holiday to see our kids and family, we have not Internet service bc we disconnect for the 7. months we are away- I'm definetley addicted and find it difficult. Too bad I don't paint lol ...

  56. Hello Jeanie :)
The new fridge leak was such a let down. Your photos of the red leafed tree and the fallen leaves are lovely, and the before and after photos of you and your cousins are a nice reminder of times past and present. You look so cute in the cot :)) Football!! Are you kidding! The best book was about football, I can hardly believe it. Lovely art work, photo of Lizzie and beautiful sunset.
    All the best

  57. Even with no computer your lake time sounds lovely. So sorry about the refrigerator! How unnerving to see water after installing a new appliance. Hope the issue is resolved quickly. Lovely color at the lake already and pretty art work. Yes, hard to believe September is out the door.......

    ReplyDelete
  58. Wow, September really does feel like it's in a hurry this year. That is such a bummer about your new refrigerator leaking right away after all that delivery effort; I hope the scheduling works out easily despite the distance. It sounds like you were still able to make the most of the quiet time with your wonderful cousins and get some great reading and painting done, which is always a bonus.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I would enjoy so much being alone for a few days in a quiet place like that!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Love that picture of you with your cousins.. past and present.
Hope the leaky refrigerator problem has been fixed.. dealing with customer service is the worst!

  61. Jeanie, I love your cats painting! It’s so adorable. I’m sorry to hear about your new refrigerator leaking. What were you able to do with it until you get back up there? Our daughter had a new fridge delivered from Home Depot and the guys didn’t know what they were doing. Things broke and didn’t get installed correctly. Long story short, they had major leaking and it even dripped into their lower level. Insurance paid for all new laminate flooring, painting and more; but the insurance company will be going after Home Depot. It took months to resolve. I wish you well!

  62. That fridge is really annoying, and disappointing. We had a cooker delivered that immediately turned out to be damaged but luckily T.noticed before the delivery men got in their van and drove the old one away. We're still trying to summon up enthusiasm for getting another new cooker. . Your picture of the feline artist is very appealing!
