It's been a busy week since I've been home, with doc appointments almost every day. And the rest of the time? Bringing my house up to "code" -- it's amazing how many spiders start webbing when you aren't there for a huge chunk of time! And, a groundhog has dug two holes under the house. Now looking for a compassionate way to get him to leave!
I've had fun with friends, too. While north, I met up with friends Pat and Susan.
They used to live in Lansing and moved to Petoskey after they both retired, and where they are living full, rich and happy lives with loads of volunteering and activities. We didn't get together last summer (though we did run into Pat on his volunteer stint) so this was a great catch-up.
I have had time with friends at home, too. Friends Susie and Jane came for a lunch and wonderful afternoon of good talk. I made farro salad with chicken and they brought bread and dessert! Couldn't beat it! Then a fun dinner out with friends Mark and Jan at a favorite Mexican restaurant that we like (and Rick doesn't!) We always share the same thing -- a mega-sized salad and fajitas. I'm embarrassed to say this is how the table looked like when we were done! (Don't judge.)
I've had a couple of fun things come in the mail! My friend Jenny in England sent some delicious treats and a fun book I'll write about when I do the September book wrap. Meanwhile, some of my art blog friends might remember Joanne Huffman. I got the sweetest note from her saying she'd been inspired by my watercolors and did some of her own. Isn't this pretty?
If you remember Joanne or follow her on Facebook, you know she is one remarkable artist who works in paint, fabric, collage, paper, you name it! I think SHE is the one who inspires!
And, when I ventured north before Rick returned, I read this "thank you" in our guest book from Kate, chronicling our Art Camp experiences! Now THAT is a guest book entry!
Fall is definitely coming to Michigan. I'm seeing some early trees bursting in red; maple ice cream sandwiches are at Trader Joe's and pumpkins are starting to appear in front of the grocery stores and soon at my favorite pumpkin spot. I notice it in the change of light in the morning as it touches the trees outside my window. It's just different, more golden. Our temperatures have rallied with warmer days but it is just a matter of time.
This table runner by Carole of From My Carolina Home, has the perfect colors to go with my dried Annabelle hydrangeas.
Meanwhile, inside, I'm slowly bringing out the fall look.
This felted orange pumpkin came from Trader Joe's and the Royal Doulton in the lantern, "The Mask Seller," has long been a favorite of mine, a Christmas present from Mom and Dad around 1974.
The mantel is simple. Some gourds, some copper, the Della Robbia-style wreath my mom made more than 55 years ago. She went crazy making these and I'm so glad I still have one in flawless condition. I'll bring out the more "Halloweenie" stuff in October.
And, saving the best for last, Rick is home! He left August 13, arrived home September 14. A month of hills, camping, rain, border crossings, and time with friends old and new. Seeing him walk up the drive was my big smile of the month!
I welcomed him home with a lovely dinner.
There was a lot of catching up to do, but I'm glad he made it safely! Thanks again to those who followed him on FB and here and all your comments, and to Jenn and Joe, who put him up en route!
A Blogger Note: I haven't been getting comments in the email for this post. That's changed but if you commented and I don't reply, I'm sorry!

Dear Jeanie, you all look fantastic. Beautiful ❤️ decorations as well. Glad 😊 you got to spend some time together. Thank you so much for sharing.
ReplyDelete...if there a compassionate way to get a groundhog to leave, let me know! Congregations, Rick.
ReplyDeleteThis post had me smiling all the way through. So many good things in your life,Jeanie!
ReplyDeleteJeanie, I loved seeing some of your Fall goodies around your house. I also have decorated for Fall, and it's just that time when we bring out the cozy feel of Fall. I love your felted orange pumpkin. I wonder if Trader Joe's still has them? Your mantel looks simple and charming with the lighter warm Fall colors, and love that copper tea pot. The table you set for Rick when he returned home is lovely. Oh, and that table runner is very unique too. Enjoy the Fall season, Jeanie. I look forward to seeing all the brilliant Fall colors around your area.

You certainly got caught up, and it looks like a happy return home there. That was quite a month.
ReplyDeleteYour friend’s watercolor is gorgeous. And YOU were her inspiration! How wonderful! I like your fall decor. and I agree the light is definitely changing and more golden in the a.m. and p.m.
ReplyDeleteHow great that you have caught up with friends! There’s nothing better!
Have a wonderful new week! 🙂
Such a lovely assortment of happy events. Seeing Rick's picture here, safely home, definitely #1. Also loved seeing the wreath your mom made, and Jan's "guestbook entry." What wonderful memories! (FWIW... that restaurant photo puts me in the mood for some blue corn enchiladas. Yum!)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it is great to have Rick back home. That is an amazing entry in your guest book! Lovely to see the wine theme table runner in use, thanks for the shout out!
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos of you and your friends. Hope that groundhog decides to move on...It's amazing the wreath that your mom made is still in good shape- so special... Enjoy your time with Rick~~
ReplyDeleteYeah Rick is back. Do share more of his adventures in you can. Mexican food sounds yummy. If I was there the table would have looked the same! Janice
ReplyDeleteAlways good to catch up with you (and Rick) this was such a lovely post ... I enjoyed seeing the photographs.
ReplyDeleteI think your Fall/Autumn decor looks great.
Enjoy your September days ... medical appointments aside!
My very good wishes.
All the best Jan
What an incredible and fun month and then Rick arrives to put the star on the top. Enjoy the day and the new week coming right up.
ReplyDeleteA whirlwind of appointments, reunions, good food, surprises, and heartfelt moments, all crowned by the joy of Rick’s safe return home
ReplyDeleteYou must be so happy and relieved to have Rick back! He made it!
ReplyDeleteKate's entry to your guest book is fantastic - that's quite the art work! It's getting autumn-y here as well with some trees slowly turning leaves and pumpkin products in the stores. A couple days ago I made the first pumpkin bread of the season, it is delicious. The first one is always the best! However, temperatures are still very summer-y and will remain like this at least through this week. I'm waiting for lower temperatures so I can start with fall planting. Hopefully you find a good solution for the groundhog!
You are a very social person and you also decorate well for fall. Is there one more trip up north in the works?
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that Rick is home. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing you with your friends. What an amazing thank you from Kate! I loved reading your post and seeing all the photos. It is beginning to look like Fall at your place. Loving the look of it all. Have a wonderful week Jeanie :)
ReplyDeleteThat guest book entry is unbelievable!! We have a log book that we write in at our cabin, and now I am inspired to try brightening it up a bit. But How Long do you suppose it took Kate to do that? I suppose she did the individual squares daily? Wow, wow, wow.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad Rick is home and you are taking on Autumn now!
So glad Rick is back home. I'm sure you missed him tremendously!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a lovely post! Friends!…and Fall !… welcome home Rick !!…enjoy every minute and have a sweet week! xox, Virginia
ReplyDeleteLooks like fun-yum times and, really, WOW ob that guestbook-entry!
ReplyDeleteAnd so nice you have the things from your parents and yippeeee for your Rick being back!
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI know you are happy to have Rick home safe and sound.
I am amazed at your creativity, your art is lovely. Pretty Autumn decorations. I have been seeing a little bit of colors here, the pumpkins are in the stores now. The note card from your friend is lovely and the guest book is just amazing. Take care, enjoy your day and the week ahead..
I am sure that you are very happy to have Rick home again - and all in one piece, too. If he gets a great dinner when he returns he’ll be anxious to set off again, if only to feast upon coming home!
ReplyDeleteSo glad Rick is home safe and sound after his cycling adventure! I love your autumnal decor. It always makes me happy to feel fall in the air. I hope this new week has started off well for you and Rick.
ReplyDeleteHome, sweet home! Welcome home, Jeanie and Rick, and a very welcome home you're creating! I love that Royal Foulton mask seller and the felted pumpkin!
ReplyDeleteWhat a relief to see him turn up!
ReplyDeleteRe: the groundhog. Ours has gone to sleep for winter. I don't know how cold it is there. It can't be too far off. It takes them a while to build the burrow, and they need the protection over winter.
That said, I don't think it can hurt a cement foundation. They are master burrowers, and wouldn't create something that would fail.
If it is active in the day, you can block the holes. I've been using logs for that.
We had a skunk, once, and I could smell it through the cement blocks in the city. You have to be careful that you don't block it in and it dies, I think. That's my 2 cents! All the best!
Hello from Nova Scotia. Hurrah that Rick made it home! I bet that was the best thing. Hope all the appointments are going well. Yesterday we went to watch a tidal bore and while waiting we’re talking to some people from Lansing. And like you, before I left I put out a few fall things. Still have things to do when I get home. Good luck with the woodchuck. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteOh you must have been so happy to see him!A wonderful guest book entry.I had a guest book and gave it to Linda. She had a cottage too!Me too I hope all your appointments are going well. The runner is fab Jeanie.
ReplyDeleteYou are so good at decorating your home. Me? I keep it the same all year. It’s immutable.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Rick is home safe and sound! But it's nice that you could fit a meal in at a restaurant he's not a fan of while he was away! No shame in that table - I love a shared meal!
ReplyDeleteIt was HOT this weekend, like close to 90. It's a bit much for mid-Sept for me. The weather has been keeping us on our toes as it was very cold the first week of September with highs barely reaching the 60s. I'd like 70s and low humidity, please and thank you!
It's always fun going out to eat with friends. I like your fall decorations too. I hope you have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteI love how the light changes as autumn is quickly approaching. I have to make a pumpkin run very soon. Your fall changes are lovely. So happy Rick arrived back home safely!
ReplyDeleteHello Jeanie :)
ReplyDeleteIt was lovely to see your photos of your friends and how nice that you could meet up and share a meal together. Your home is being well decorated for autumn
and the small wreath that your mum made is lovely and looks like new. It's great that Rick is home again safe and sound.Well done for making him a welcome home dinner, you must have had loads to talk about, including your good news from the doctors.
All the best
Sonjia
How wonderful it must have been to see Rick return from his long ride. Sounds like you did lots of fun things while he was gone. Spiders need banishing here, too, and fall is slowly creeping into the garden. Not much indoors yet, though. Have a great week, Jeanie.
ReplyDeleteLocally we have a place called Wild and Free, they rehabilitate injured wild life as well as relocate to safer areas - through the years I have brought them injured birds, a rabbit, a pigeon once ;)
ReplyDeleteYou are always so busy. I had never heard of a groundhog digging under a house. It sounds terrible.
ReplyDeleteNot judging. I’d eat it all too.

That watercolor guest book entry is just amazing! You shall treasure that.
ReplyDeleteLots of goodies in this post, but having Rick home must top them all off.
I hope you are feeling better and have a wonderful week, dear lady! :)
Haven't seen that Royal Doulton figure before. Love your fall decorations.
ReplyDeleteI Also have decorate for fall... So tired of summer although it seems to be hanging on. We are back in the 80s again and haven't had any rain for at least three weeks. It's getting serious.
ReplyDeleteSo glad that Rick got home safely.
We have lots of groundhogs around here. They seem to dig holes under peoples dicks. We have all sizes. Good luck!
Yay! So glad Rick made it home safe and sound. What an adventure! What a blessing to see so many friends while he was gone. Your home and decor look so cozy. Happy Fall! (Almost) :)
ReplyDeleteHow lovely, Rick is home again. I'm very impressed by how long he went out on his bike!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you bring Fall into our home.
Looks like Rick was alao glad to be home from that big smile! How clever your mom was with those wreaths and lovely you still have one that's good as new. And wow!!! Kate's guestbook entry is DEFINITELY something else! Jenny W
ReplyDeleteLife is good! You have a busy social life and wonderful friends. I love to read the history behind your decorations. Rick’s trip sounds amazing.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, I had a big smile on my face. Thank you. The guestbook entry is simply stunning.
ReplyDeleteWe're getting a full dose of summer this weekend – 26/27 degrees Celsius / 80 Fahrenheit – so I'm not ready for fall yet. But it will be here sooner than we think.
Hugs to you.
So glad your biker made it home safe and sound. I'm always amazed at the extra housework waiting for me after returning home from a trip. It shouldn't since living on the lake we seem to have extra critters and spiders but I always feel like the house should be just as clean as when I left!
ReplyDeleteTwo fall-ish details caught my eye: the dried hydrangeas, and the open window in your last photo. Being able to open a window and have fresh breezes come in is still at least a month away; the heat drags on and on and on. It's not unusual, but after our first slight cool down, everyone gets over-anxious.
ReplyDeleteAs for those spiders, I'm suddenly seeing cobwebs absolutely everywhere. I've ony spotted a couple of the spiders; they're the tiniest thing in the world. I've learned that there is a way to repel them: people and pet friendly sprays that incorporate peppermint oil seem to be the thing. There are testimonies all over, and an amazing number of products. I'm going to order a bottle of the spray from Ye Olde Amazone, and see how it works. I'll report. It's great that it's not something that would harm either you or Lizzie!
My gosh- I don't now where to even start there is so much here! I LOVE that table runner. The artwork here is absolutely amazing and inspirational.
ReplyDeleteI am just getting ready to have fogging done for the spiders we have here. They are hidden all over the place and drive me nuts. The peppermint oil and all the natural products I tried only put a bandaid on the problem and don't really work very well. I have to be out of the house for the day and will have to board the pups for 24 (it will be 48) hours.
Glad Rick is still biking and gets home safely. xo Diana
Judge you and that table, no way, if you enjoyed, that is what counts. I think today I will put out my Fall/Halloween Decor. Folks in Hickman Co. love their Halloween, they started decorating in Aug. HAHA.....lets not rush the season! Anyway, I was wondering what would chase off groundhog when you mentioned it so here is what I found...https://www.bestproductsreviews.com/groundhog-repellent?targetid=dat-2336187331310719:loc-190&matchtype=b&device=c&campaignid=424189022&creative=&adgroupid=1350201646411266&feeditemid=&loc_physical_ms=83328&loc_interest_ms=&network=o&devicemodel=&placement=&keyword=$bestproductsreviews&target=&aceid={aceid}&adposition=&trackid=us_all_top_bing&mId=H149003CQN&trackOld=true&msclkid=4a3a7ba89bef12bbecf51361f37b6da4.....
ReplyDeleteJeanie, hello! I just started following you tho I have read your posts before....love your Autumnal pieces and so glad Rick is home safe and sound. Please check out my blog Me and My Captain as I have a few Fall changes (recipe too). I live in Florida but hail from Kansas and have relatives in Michigan...where it is beautiful this time of year. Blessings always...Kari @ Me and My Captain
ReplyDeleteBeing away from each other for a month.. I don't know how you do it. That watercolor is lovely and what a guest book page.. wow.
ReplyDeleteSo glad Rick is back Jeanie! Your house is looking very Fall like. The dinner was a much appreciated "Welcome Home!" I'm sure. The watercolors are lovely ~ take care,
ReplyDeleteJenna
How lovely to have Rick back home now. I bet you were relieved. Visits with friends is always the best. My autumn things have come out now too. Though I will be sad for warmer days, I am beginning to savor cooler evenings and mornings. That is an amazing guest book entry for sure. Love the art.
ReplyDeleteYou've got spiders, I've got cobwebs. I've been lazy in my cleaning routines this summer. I'm trying to shift gears and do a better job of staying ahead of the dust and the sand!
ReplyDeleteJeanie,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for all your visits!! Glad that Rick is home safely...Your Fall decor looks lovely!! Trees are starting to turn colors here but I think this week we are getting one last burst of Summer with temps in the 80's...It pains me that I had to use my air conditioner in the LR again...I guess it is wht we call Indian Summer....
Hugs,

Sounds like you've been having fun times Jeanie. You must be so glad that Rick has returned from his travels!
ReplyDeletecheers

So many good things, but the best, of course, is the safe return of Rick.
ReplyDeleteKudos to Rick for a wonderful month long ride. I am sure he is happy to be home. It is always fun to visit with friends, the food sounds delicious. Those pesky spiders are always trying to make their homes. Your mantle is so cute. Happy autumn.🍂
ReplyDeleteI know life is not perfect but it seems you are pretty close. I love hearing about your company, the fun things you do and all the great food. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely post. It sounds like you had such a wonderful week, even with all the doc appointments and spiders, haha. I love seeing all your beautiful fall decorations; that pumpkin and the old figurine from your parents are so special.
ReplyDeleteooooh welcome home rick, what a ride...i am glad to see you two back together again!! your fall decorations look great and i would have enjoyed seeing the "before" pics of the mexican food!! you look great, you have a beautiful smile!!
ReplyDeleteYou have been very busy. I hope you are feeling better and that the medication is helping. Good that Rich came home in good form. That is really an achievement to bike for such a long distance. I am sure he appreciated your dinner.
ReplyDeleteYes, time to decorate for autumn. You are doing it so well. I hardly do anything, maybe try to add som orange/brown colours to grasp the autumn. However, we have had nice weather here lately, although mixed with rain. But it is desperately needed. Therefor nature is still keeping its green colour, although I imaging it will soon change.
This is such a wonderful post to read. I'm happy that Rick is back home after his travels. I imagine both of you are very happy. xx
ReplyDeleteSounds like such a full and lively week. I hope the doctor appointments went smoothly and fingers crossed you find a gentle solution for your unexpected groundhog tenant. Your lunches and dinners with friends sound absolutely lovely, and that farro salad with chicken has me intrigued! How special to receive both thoughtful gifts in the mail and inspiration from fellow artists what a boost. And yes, that golden September light is pure magic it really does announce fall’s arrival in the loveliest way.
ReplyDeleteAnnie,

I love those sweet smiles. And these photos! Makes me feel like I'm right there with you. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteI love this post and the friendship and LIFE is shares. I hope you have a wonderful rest of your weekend. I am popping by after a visit and comment that you left on my blog. :) Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI would love to have a fall day here is S. Calif. It was 100 deg. most of the week. Thanks for sharing. I smile at the "doctor apptm" as part of our week. I feel like we are in a club.
ReplyDeleteI adore the guest book entry, so colorful and creative. Love.

I am so glad to see that Rick had a safe and successful bicycle tour! Your friends have sent you so many delightful gifts, and I love the detailed guest book entry. Fall is here! Love your pretty decorations. I have a weakness for everything copper.
ReplyDeleteOops! I thought I'd left a comment here a few days ago. I see you're still very busy. I find that life is so busy these days but just like when we were in school, September always bring a flurry of activities as we get back into the regular swing of things. I'm glad you've been able to spend time with friends and good food and happy to see that Rick has made it home after a long and I'm sure exciting journey.
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely gifts, the table runner and watercolour are both beautiful! I have heard of groundhogs and even seen the film "Groundhog Day" but have never seen one in real life and couldn't call an image to mind! I imagine them to be pretty big creatures!
ReplyDelete
