At Home: All Things Home

It's hard to believe that Easter is about a week away -- and it's as late as it can be this year, so we are well into official spring. Not that you would know it by the weather! But the mini-daffs, the first to pop each year, are looking perky outside and buds on the later spring bulbs. For the bigger ones? It's Trader Joe's! You go with what you can, right?

The house is looking a bit more springy. The spring/Easter decorations have been up for a bit, but I keep adding to them, moving them around!

The three egg trees finally went up, and with them, memories of making many of these eggs with my mom. I still remember the two of us, sitting around the kitchen table, lost in a mass of sequins, beads, ribbon and trims, decorating those  eggs. Only the night before we would both have had red faces from blowing out the yolks and whites, one pin-prick hole on each end of the eggs. Little gadgets make that easier now!

She would be thrilled I still use Big Yellow Bunny -- such a face full of character!

And I know she would enjoy all the other rabbits in the house.  On the mantel is an enormous photo done by my friend Wally Parshall. It's actually too heavy to hang on the wall, but I love having it there, especially in the spring. Wally is so missed.

Even Peter Rabbit gets his own shelf!

It's a good time for cooking warm, cozy food, too. But lighter. These photos were taken after I dug into the dish to serve so it looks a bit like a dog's breakfast, but this is a lovely, light chicken dish. It uses chicken breasts or tenders, mushrooms, carrots, artichoke hearts and covered in a chicken broth-wine sauce.

Here's the recipe. (Click to enlarge) If you use chicken breasts, follow the recipe timing; if you use tenders, cut back timing as they seem to cook when browning and too long in the oven makes them tough.

This fabulous recipe came from Ina Garten's "Go To Dinners" but here's the link. Save it. It's amazing! I  I served this over brown rice. The sauce was so good, I would make just the sauce for other things, too!

I've been able to do a bit of painting. I've found just leaving my paints out makes it a whole lot easier to just stop for a bit and then become engaged. Here is another page in my England journal. I'll write some things in the blank spot on the left.

And another.

Meanwhile, I leave you with my favorite Rainbow Girl!

She may be neurotic but there is no sweeter cat!

I think I'll keep her!

You are prepping the home so well for Easter. Love the recipe book texture seemingly that is so well used.

I had a couple of rabbits before my move that I always put out and your blog makes me miss them. I also had an egg tree similar to yours but without the memories attached like yours, so I don't feel as badly about that getting edited out of my life. You never disappoint in the decorating arena.

The paintings in your England journal are lovely, Jeanie. This makes your journal so much more personal and special. It might take longer to finish, but what a beautiful work of art are you going to have. I also like the eggs that you made with your mom - such lovely memories. I remember blowing out the yolks and whites from my childhood as well. It didn't always work without breaking an egg or two...

Your house definitely screams spring even if the weather doesn't. I do love that big bunny with the big feet and big cheeks. It's so wonderful it goes back to your mom too. And your travel journal looks amazing. It is easier to work when you can just sit down and get to it never mind having to dig everything out. Have a super weekend, and let's hope we both get spring ASAP. hugs-Erika

Your house looks wonderful. I used to make those eggs with my mom, too. Usually I cut some forthsia branches early and force them in a vase and hang my eggs in the yellow flowers. If I am lucky the branches root and I can transplant them. But this year we are remodeling a bathroom and someone piled supplies in front of the closet of decorations. No Easter Tree for me!

Love your daffs and the bright blue vase. I've been in Trader Joes twice this week -- picking up Passover ingredients -- and the daffs called out to me. Tulips are starting to bloom in New York.

The yellow rabbit with puffy cheeks is adorable. How sweet you have those precious moments with your mom. LOVE your journal paintings, and the cottage is a wonderful keepsake. It's been wonderful having Easter this late in April. We used to have to wear coats over our new Easter outfits when I was a kiddo. Your chicken dishes look yummy to me! Happy Weekend!

The egg trees and Big Yellow Bunny brought a smile — so special that you still use the decorations you made with your mom. The chicken dish looks delicious, and your journal pages are beautiful. And Rainbow Girl is adorable — definitely a keeper!

Such a lovely, heartwarming post, Jeanie!

Those recipes both look so good! I wish it wasn’t still warm, hearty meal season but it’s been quite cold here. It will be nice this weekend, though, with temps in the 60s! I am looking forward to outdoor time!!

Your house looks so festive! The boys are very excited for Easter, especially the egg hunt!

I came right over when I saw "All Things Home." First off, I love that blue vase, and the yellow daffodils look very pretty in it. That's so special that you have fond memories of making these eggs with your mom. What a fun craft project. You mentioned the Big Yellow Bunny - was that hers before? The picture of the wisteria looks charming on your mantel. You could never tell it was so heavy. Love all your Easter bunnies, Jeanie. The chicken breasts over brown rice look delicious. I am admiring your painting of the yellow cottage with the orange foliage. You did a nice job on that. Your cat looks so content lying there. I know how much you love her, Jeanie. I enjoyed your home post today. They are truly my favorite kind of posts.

You remind me of how my mother loved to decorate Easter eggs with hats, wigs, and pretty faces, and a little paper collar to make the ladies stand up.

I am always in awe of your decorating skills. I love your mantel and your bunnies. I would hate to have to dust your home. Love how spring like it looks. And what charming drawings and paintings you created. I also blew eggs to make decorations. Thankfully I have enough to last a lifetime.

Beautiful rainbow cat photos! Your house is indeed looking very spring-like. I'm amazed that you've kept and preserved those Easter eggs all these years -- they must be incredibly fragile.

Loving your decorating sentiments...I'm still dealing with all those plant starts in the kitchen which is tamping down my decorating. Love the paintings, especially the cottage or inn. Yes, leaving paints out makes it easier to walk in and dash a bit off! Hugs, Sandi

I like rabbits and gardens in the spring. I think rabbits are great for the whole season, not just Easter. Yours are so cute, and you have a much larger collection than I do, LOL!!

Your painting is inspiring too! It's so great that you've made space for creativity, and I can tell your England journal is going to be a beautiful keepsake.

And as for your Rainbow Girl, she sounds like a treasure! Keeping her is definitely a great decision. What a perfect companion to share all these moments with.

I'm going to try the chicken and artichoke number, using that recipe. For years I've made a similar dish, but I use marinated artichoke hearts, and use the oil for sauteing onions, mushrooms, etc. The other recipe sounds good, too, but we're already to warm I'm not going to use the oven unless it's absolutely necessary -- I've kept the AC off so far, and hope to carry on with that for a while longer. It's hard to believe that next week is Easter!

I love your decorations. I bought a decoration this year and I plan to buy a couple more things. This year I am in Ukraine while my husband is at home, so I plan to get some food and wine if some volunteer friends want to come over, with them being away from their families too. I hope you have a wonderful time. xx

Glad you are keeping Lizzie. Oh! Painting! I am missing it so much. I hope I can once again get the paints out soon. The chicken recipe sounds delicious! Love the Easter decorations. There are a few out in my apartment and bouquets of fresh flowers too. We are past daffodils and now on to tulips.; so a little ahead of Michigan.

Oh, I love those eggs you decorated with your mom -- great memories, too. Your Easter tree is fantastic!

But I was especially glad to see your paintings, and I like the title pages with something big and significant from each place, and something intimate (and tasty!). That house overgrown with flower/ivy (?) is magnificent!
