Something Old, Something Tasty!

Sometimes there isn't a lot of new to share, especially since I'm trying to lay a little low these days. So I figured I'd look back on the old! Old photos, that is! I thought maybe I'd find a bit of inspiration in some images from years past. And, I thought I'd throw out a recipe or two!

After a hiatus of several months while I was at the lake, my monthly lunch meet-up with two friends from local theater was resumed. This time it was my turn to host and since it was the first day of fall, I thought soup would be good. (They'd bring salad and dessert.) The recipes for Julia's French Onion soup and Rachel Ray's spicy pumpkin soup are both linked here. Both were a hit!

Frustrated by the lack of communication about my IV treatment/hospital appointment, I put on my big-girl pants, went to the doc's office and said I was sitting there till he could talk to me. Turns out I haven't fallen into the black hole -- it's just that 19 people are ahead of me, and he told me it would be very soon. I was good with that.

But I'd done other lab work, and those results came back the next day. It turns out that I have MRSA pneumonia, not pseudomonas pneumonia -- and THAT means I can take oral antibiotics! No hospital, no picc for now! That was the best news ever. Granted, about a month overdue but I'll take it. By the time you read this, I'll be on the mend!

Meanwhile, thank you all for the wonderful get well wishes and support. It's been a very tough go, especially emotionally, and I appreciate that more than I can say.

I've been watching the new episodes of "The Chelsea Detective" (Acorn) and Rick and I just started season three of "Only Murders in the Building." (We're a little behind the curve!) I cut my cable subscription and took up Hulu instead and so far, so good. I'm liking it. I'm still able to follow live news and most other things I liked on cable but also am enjoying the broader selection of movies available. The flat over-the-air antenna I ordered from Amazon has been great and even without the streams, I get a lot of channels I didn't before so no complaints!

And finally, I promised  you recipes. Here are the links to the two soups I made for lunch the other day -- Rachel Ray's pumpkin soup and Julia's French Onion soup. (I didn't do the part about grating in the raw onion at the end of the onion soup and just added the cheese and croutons but didn't broil it. It was fine that way.) Both are easy and both are delicious!

l'll have more from my most recent walk at the Ditch next time! I saw the most spectacular event!

  2. We are watching Chelsea Detective. It is really well done. It might be the best of the newer British Mysteries. I do hope it has a long run.

  4. I get very behind reading/writing blogs, so am sorry to hear you'd been unwell. Really glad you're on the mend!!
We watched some of 'Only Murders in the Building' but didn't stick with it. We watched 'The Bear' on Hulu. Now, we're watching 'The Lincoln Lawyer' on Netflix I think.
Soup is one of very favorite things to make. Mostly just veggie or chicken lately though.
    That first photo is lovely!

  5. Lovely photos, especially the first one with how you caught the light through the turning leaves. I love "Only Murders in the Building" too! I'm saving Season 3 to binge on in October!

  6. Well, good news about the oral antibiotics. But, you know, I have never had pneumonia in my entire life. Why do some people get it, I don't know. Terrible. It's dangerous at your age and older. Take care, will you?

  7. Lovely photos, Jeanie. The pumpkin guy or girl is delightful! So happy to hear you can take oral antibiotics. Sorry you had to wait so long to get answers. Take care of yourself!

  8. I made pumpkin soup just before reading this, so I will have to try the recipe another time. It looks good, especially with the apples. Who would have thought of that? 🤗

  9. I want to know what antenna you bought at Amazon. I've been told NONE will work in my area because I have so many trees. Please, please, please send me a link because I want to cut the cable and I believe you have lots of trees, too.

I LOVE that scarecrow with the pumpkin head.

Nice to read you now know what you have that is ailing you and you have a way to "cure" it. Nice also to read you are now on the mend. Have a super weekend, dear Jeanie.

  10. Yay for bloodwork that finally gets you on the right meds and on the mend! The soups sound wonderful. We just started watching Only Murders season 3 last week and I'm really enjoying it.

  11. Good medical news is always welcome, and sounds like you received it this time. Pneumonia is serious stuff so any glimmer of light in the darkness is welcome. Keep on getting better, Jeanie.

  12. I'm sorry you've had to deal with the pneumonia but glad to hear it's almost in the rear view mirror:)
Love that scarecrow and the recipes sound delish.

  15. That is good news. Too bad it took so long for you to get on antibiotics, but at least you're on now. And on the mend! I've been wanting to drop our satellite TV and go with hulu, but I am worried about getting channels for some of the shows we watch, like football which my husband just loves. Hmmm. I will have to do more looking I think. Have a great weekend, and enjoy! hugs-Erika

  16. That is such wonderful news! Too bad it took so dang long to get the correct diagnosis. Once you get some meds in you, you should start feeling better. I always take extra probiotics when I am put on antibiotics. Take it easy and rest a lot. :)

I'm currently watching the new season of The Chelsea Detective and haven't even started yet on the new season of Only Murders in the Building--so you are ahead of me! I am behind on everything it seems--lol! I fell down a rabbit hole of British history videos on YouTube and got lost in Britain and then Egypt while making Christmas cards--ROFL!

  17. Oh I would have been so frustrated and good for you for getting answers.i hope you get on the right meds and feel better soon.

  18. I enjoyed looking at all the "old" photos and enjoyed your sharing. Funny I was thinking today that I had very little to post and wondered if I should gather some old photos!! Glad you are getting things resolved with your health!

  19. High time you got the right diagnosis and treatment, and can start getting better. Any kind of pneumonia is no joke, and depletes your energy dramatically. So I hope you're doing much better soon.

  20. Hello, Jeanie

It is great you finally have some good news about your health. I hope the meds have you feeling better and back to normal soon. Love the fall leaves and the Pumpkin head scarecrow. I see the Chelsea Detective is on Britbox too, I will watch that series next. Thanks for sharing the soup recipe links, I love soup.
Take care, have a wonderful weekend.

  22. I hope you are well and feeling 101% soon.

  23. That pumpkin headed scarecrow made me laugh for two reasons. First, it's just funny. Second, I imagined that was the expression on your face when you went rolling into your doc's office to demand accountability! I'm so glad to hear the good news. Pills beat hospitalization every, single time. Now, I'm off to read your recipes. If it ever cools off here, I'd like to try both.

  24. So glad you finally are starting to feel better Jeanie! Pretty Fall photos and the soups sound wonderful!

  26. Jeanie, I’m so happy that you’re on the mend! I got back from my trip this week and while I was there, our son dropped whatever they had and went with YouTube. Could you tell me which antenna you bought from Amazon? We’ve been contemplating what to do about our cable. It’s so expensive! I love your photos. I was surprised to see how some of the leaves near us have changed colors so much. And that pumpkin head gave me a chuckle!

  27. Such fun photos. It feels like fall now and soup would be heavenly. Thanks for sharing the soup links. Happy weekend.

  28. Hmmmm: Yay, MRSA?
Well, if it gets you on the mend quicker, then yes.
    And yay for big-girl pants.

Knowing your love of London, may I recommend SLOW HORSES with Gary Oldman and Kristen Scott Thomas? Use a free trial from AppleTV to binge seasons 1 & 2.
    So good!

Love to you and Rick and La Cosette.

  29. I love your autumnal photos! That pumpkin scarecrow is pretty creepy.

Good news about your pneumonia (if I can say that) and I hope you're already on the mend and feeling better. Good for you taking a stand with the doctor. Sometimes it's enough to just get some answers. It's the lack of communication that's most frustrating.

  30. Good photos (as always) and good news on having the right kind of pneumonia. Hope you've started feeling better.

  31. Fantastic News! I am so glad your antibiotics are sorted out well.

French Onion Soup. I watched that Julia Child program when it first aired decades ago! I think the recipe has been edited to not use oxtails to make the broth. There was a butcher nearby that sold them. I don't think he is in business anymore, retired or something.
I think store bought broth in a can is not as good as making your own.

  32. What bravado!! Good for you..and happy re your news:)Love the ginko leaves..Soups delicious..I love the scarecrow pics:)

  35. Cliffhanger ending! Can't wait to learn more!

Also, this news about MRSA pneumonia versus pseudomonas pneumonia is fantastic! No hospital? Three cheers! Getting to start on your medication immediately instead of waiting waiting waiting to hear about your hospital appointment? Three more cheers! Sure hope you are already feeling better (and maybe looking forward to Rick's reunion)!

    Best of everything -- hugs!

  36. I'm sorry to hear you have pneumonia at all, but I hope the antibiotics are effective, and quickly. In the meantime, bowls full of soup seem to me to be both comforting and healthy. <3

  44. That is awesome news that you can do oral antibiotics instead of IV and a hospital stay! I hope you're feeling lots better by now.

I love Julia Child's French Onion Sou, but haven't made it in a while. It's definitely on my list for when it cools down a little more.

Thanks for the pumpkin soup recipe. I've been wanting to try making it and that recipe sounds good.

  45. SO glad about your lab results! isn't it just as well they came through before you'd had to go through all the stuff with the PICC line? I can only imagine the stress of the medical to and fro-ing, and what a relief it must be to have that particular cloud float away!

  46. Great news on the medical front for you, I'm doing a happy dance:)
I do like that scarecrow and thanks for the recipe links.

  47. We were just talking about how nice it would be to make a French Onion Soup. Thanks for the links. I loved watching Julia Child’s cooking shows. She was so authentic! I am so sorry about your black hole and do hope it will soon end. Speedy healing! I have been looking for a good show to watch. I will start with The Chelsea Detective. Thanks for the recommend. Fantastic photos, all of them.

  48. Whew! So glad you finally got help with health issues and don't need to go to the hospital. Hope you are feeling better each and every day.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm so glad you got your meds and that they are oral. Dealing with health issues can be a real time suck. I dealt with that this week when I picked up a medication and was only given 1 vial of injectable drugs instead of 5. Wow was that challenging to address and then I went to pick them up at the pharmacy yesterday and the tech was so confused since I didn't have any prescriptions in the system. I tried to calmly explain that I had spoken to a pharmacist the day before and she said to come pick them up soon as they wouldn't be in the system and could be lost in the shuffle. The tech found them but then didn't know how to check me out. I'd been waiting over 10 minutes in the drive thru at this point and was like - can you just give me the meds, you guys are making me whole for what I should have received yesterday. She asked if I could pull around and come into the store but I had both boys with me so I said sorry, no. Luckily she was able to talk to the pharmacist who said - just give the lady the meds. Alls well that ends well but wow was I annoyed by the whole experience. Anyways, I share this rant with you as I know you can relate to healthcare frustrations!!

I am glad soup weather is arriving! Although it will be summerlike this weekend with temps in the 80s. I'm kind of done with temps in the 80s? I'd like to settle into 60-70s if I had it my way!
