Tea for the Queen

I so enjoyed the Queen's Jubilee events. My equally-Anglophile friend Carol has been watching too, and last week she and I had a Jubilee tea! I had ordered some Jubilee tea plates from Cath Kidston and got out the silver and some pretty table linens.

It was a bit of a pink and white theme, which worked with the plates. Easy carnations and baby's breath made for a queenly floral piece!

The food was abundant!

I made Marie's Classic Fruit Scones from her "Best of British Baking" cookbook.

And, I made her Battenberg cake! It was my first time doing it and while it sank a bit in the middle...

...It went together like a dream and looked so pretty when it was cut! I got it a tiny bit off kilter but for a first time doing this, I felt good about it and will definitely do it again!

The rest of the menu included cucumber, egg salad and ham/dijon sandwiches; chocolates; deviled eggs, lemon tartlets and shortbread. In addition to the Cath Kidston plates and mom's silver, I used some Depression glass tumblers and the plates on the tiers were vintage Hall "Crocus" and Taylor, Smith & T "Tulip."

Carol and I both wore hats! And we posed for pix by my Queen's Royal Standard flag that my friend Maryanne sent along! You can see it draped behind the table.

And for better or worse, there we are. Rick crashed our party, which was a good thing because it wasn't a blurry selfie!

It felt good to be able to pull together a mini-party after two weeks of having life disrupted by the PICC line and antibiotics!

So, here's to the queen -- and I to resuming a bit of normalcy!

  8. How fun! Your teas tablescape is perfect! I too am watching the Jubilee...just a bit at a time as I taped it all. I so love all of the British traditions. This may be the last jubilee for the queen so it makes it even more special and bittersweet. Janice

  26. I love the flowers! And I've never heard of a Battenburg cake -- only Battenburg lace. Is there some connection between the two? Maybe they both come from a certain location?

  29. That is a totally impressive tea table! I am especially overawed by the Battenberg cake, which of course I know about only from the Great British Baking Show. The china and silver are also beautiful and very in keeping with the theme. Like my mother before me, I have never had silver tableware at all. You look as if you had a marvelous celebration.

  34. You certainly know how to put on a spread fit for a queen, Jeanie. I love the plates and the various elements needed to have a perfect high tea. This was brilliant.

  35. This is so appropriate for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee! Such a feast you were having! The Battenberg cake looks fabulous (I wonder whether it has anything to do with the Mountbatten family, since Battenberg is the German princely family that the Mountbattens originated from) - it also looks like a ton of work to put it together. You did a fabulous job, Jeanie, and your friend Carol and you look like you were enjoying yourself. Such a lovely picture. Your mother's silver is beautiful and I do like the corgi on the queenly plates.

  36. Wonderful post, Jeanie! The decorations were lovely, and the spread of goodies to enjoy look scrumptious. The little corgi on the plate is darling.

I've only had a "high tea" two or three times in my life, all when I visited Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. I was born in Nova Scotia, Canada. Relatives on both sides of my family, including both grandmothers, always had photos of the Royal Family displayed in their homes. We were all loyal to the Queen. I have a soft spot in my heart for the Royal Family to this day. I'm glad you celebrated with style and had fun!

    Have a lovely weekend!

  38. Wow, you really went all out! You put us to shame and we LIVE here. LOL! (I put out two Union Jack flags that we have and that was the extent of our decorating.)

I love those Cath Kidston plates.

Loved the golden carriage and little Prince Louie. The Queen was crowned the year my parent's got married. They would have loved seeing the jubilee. Glad you are feeling better! x K
