Postcards from the Lake: Fabulous Fungi

Those autumn visits to the lake always bring something new in the nature line.

This past month it was the arrival of the fungi.

When they come, they come in force. It was a regular cavalcade of toadstools!

In one of my favorites, "Peter Pan," I remember (in the original Mary Martin television version) all the lost boys, lifting up the "mushroom caps" and jumping in, landing in their world of the Lost Boys, Neverland.

All I can say is that there must be a lot of lost boys here!

No, I'm not cooking any of these up. I will leave that to better foragers than I.

In fact, when I posted this one on Facebook, someone showed a link to remind me that these were the hallucinogenic "magic mushrooms."

I think I'll give that one a pass!

But whether you look at them from the top...

...or from down below...

...In color....

...or in black and white...

I have to say, they delight, enchant and intrigue me.

And I will miss them when they're gone. Till next year.

  2. Nature is an artist - and you captured it!
Oh, I only know the version with Robin Williams of the movie. And there is a statue in Perth of Peter Pan. I´m not lost, but reckon having no kids, I never grew up, either!
(Honestly I sometimes accidentially said "school" instead of "work"!!)
At least Autumn has some fun to share :-)

  6. I love finding mushrooms and fungi when out walking. These are just beautiful and what a treat to see. Like you, I would just enjoy the beauty and not test with a taste.

  7. Fungi are fascinating organisms and I have made it my business to know a little more about them in recent years, although I am still very much a neophyte. However, with the help of a friend who used to teach mycology at the University of Waterloo I have learned to recognize some of the edible varieties and we enjoy them very much. They are excellent in sauces or soups.

  10. Great pictures! I can't stand to eat mushrooms, but I do think they're cute when they pop up like that. I don't blame you for not wanting to cook with them. That just seems very risky.

  11. goodness gracious y'all have a huge VARIETY of mushrooms there! I usually only see one or two types, maybe 3. I always show them to fairy granddaughter and she says "the fairies danced all around those last night, Ma-Maw!" Hmmmm, wonder who taught her that? LOL I'll show her these pictures and she'll say "they have fairies too!"

  17. There’s a lot of beauty in mushrooms as you have shown us here, Jeanie. And I would not pick any go sample either.

  18. I love mushrooms, both to look at and eat, but, whereas when I was a child it was an exciting family activity to go pick field mushrooms {and, oh, nothing tastes quite the same as a plate of freshly picked fried mushrooms on toast} these days with all the warnings of poisonous ones I leave it to the professional foragers too. Beautiful photos of one of nature's miracles.

  19. Hello,

Wonderful series on the fungi. There are so many different shapes and colors.
    Wishing you a great day!

  20. You found quite the variety there, Jeanie! The only kind we ever ate, that we were sure of, were puffballs. There's no mistaking a puffball - they are like volleyballs! -Jenn

  21. Aren't they amazing?... I've found some purple ones here on our trails!

  22. Or, perhaps, those are fairy houses, and the fairy population is booming?

  23. I've always love when they pop up overnight. Always surprised at their color and how large they get. But, leaving them alone! I think they are so pretty I found a ceramic mushroom and brought home several where they reside next to my beds......

  25. Wow beautiful pics! Amazing seeing fungi from different angles and colors or in b/w. You are fortunate to have nature so close to your doorstep.

  26. You have some great close up shots there. How decorative they are! I recognise many mushrooms that look quite similar to ones here, it does make you wonder how they can manage to travel to places so far apart ! Isn't nature wonderful!

  27. Jeanie, these are amazing. Doesn't it mean that you have garden fairies who have visited you if you see them in a ring? It seems like I read that somewhere in my life. Your photos are wonderful, as they always are. I enjoyed this post, as it made me realize how often we do take the beauty of nature for granted. Even the little things.

    Enjoy your day, Jeanie.

  28. Hello my sweet friend. We too have had them showing up at the farm but yours are way prettier. Thank you for your sweet and understanding comments to me. They meant the world. Hugs.

  29. Love these photos - fungi are so interesting in shape and texture. Do you know that the magic mushroom (which often gets bright red here) was once used to make rat poisoning?

  30. Aren’t they amazing? I enjoyed all of your photos...so very interesting and wise to pass on them for eating purposes!

  31. You have a wide variety of mushrooms! We always get some in the fall, but usually only one kind. It's been a super damp/wet fall so we've seen more mushrooms than usual. They are very pretty!

  32. Mushrooms can be so colorful and textured - indeed magical to the eye!

  33. The mushrooms were late showing up here but there are sure a lot of them now. We have lots of edible honey mushrooms.

  34. yes, I loved those old Gidget movies........watched them over and over every time they were on t/v when I was young. And all the Patty Duke and Frankie Avalon and Annette movies too!!

  35. We're a little short on fungi in my immediate neighborhood, but when I manage to find some woods, there are more that are pretty and interesting. I like the views from the bottom as much as from the top; I think the gills are fascinating, and so pretty. My favorite literary mushroom is the one the caterpillar sits atop, talking to Alice while smoking his hookah. What's not to like about that? (And remember Grace Slick's version of "White Rabbit"?)

  36. Wow, those are some funky funghi! You've made me look at them in a whole new light!
