In the Garden

I see such magnificent gardens on your blogs, I'm always embarrassed to share mine! But all the rain has made for good growth and the color is coming on!

The lettuce got in late so it isn't huge but it's sweet and perfect for adding to sandwiches.

And finally, BBT's -- bacon, basil and tomato sandwiches.

The store tomatoes are nothing to write home about but when these begin to bear fruit, yum!

Pretty much all of my gardening is in pots and they don't look great all mixed up in front of the house but some of these are going to the cottage with me when I hit the road for the lake. I'll take my herb basket and some basil for sure. I'm a sucker for herbs and the dill self seeded into the ground from last year's pots so now it's quite a fluffy collection!

My book club friend Laura split her agapanthus plants and mine is blooming! It's so pretty and I'm hoping I can winter it inside without instant death.

On the side of the house, a thyme and oregano garden and some climbing roses. The zinnias I've planted are just seedlings now, but that green stuff behind the roses is mint. Wonderful mint!

Some of you asked where I was going to put the HUGE sun face from my Southern Exposure project. It's so heavy, I can't hang it on the house or fence so right now, what you see is what you get!

Here's one of the more recent Southern Exposure projects, the Log Planter. It's coming along well, too.

And so is the bird planter I did there earlier this season. I do love those projects; they give back all season long!

In front, the sweet peas are coming on. Pretty soon this bush will be like Audrey Two in "Little Shop of Horrors" -- all fabulous pink and white sweet peas.

And so are the lilies.

The iris and bleeding hearts are gone but I have some Baby Grand sized chairs there, just because they make me happy!

I am quite sure the pansies will fade out when the weather gets consistently hot but for now, I love them!

So there you have it -- the early garden ventures in my world. I'm looking forward to seeing yours!

  1. Jeanie, your garden IS gorgeous; nothing to apologize for! I miss gardens, but even if I had one, with my equilibrium problems, I wouldn't be able to do the gardening. Oh well. I get to enjoy gardens here, without all of the work. LOL I DO want to pot some basil though, for sure! At least I haven't killed off the bouganvillea, hibiscus, or the palm trees. :: giggles ::

  2. I love your garden Jeanie. Very colourful and lush. Just the way I like. I know you spend so much time at the lake that it is difficult to have a garden since you are not there to tend it. I find I have more success with container gardening too. Have an awesome rest of your weekend.

  3. Bacon, basil and tomotao sandwich - now there’s a twist in an old favourite I gotta try! At this time of the year I make a traditional Italian Caprese - always a big hit when we have company.

  4. Your garden is perfect. It's small and "contained enough" that you won't be a slave to and it produces both eatables and beauty. I've never heard of bacon, basil and tomato sandwiches and I'm going to try one in the next few days. I have a sweet basil plant that is thriving!

Your chairs for the baby grands sure is bright and worth a wide smile. Love them.

  5. Your gardens, flowers look mighty fine to me . . .
    Agapanthus is beautiful . . .
I need to look it up . . . new to me.
When can I put my zinnia seedlings in the ground??

  6. Jeanie, I love your container gardens. The roses are so pretty. So many cute things in your garden. Blessings, xoxo, Susie

  7. I think your flowers look just gorgeous. I like container gardening myself, and you have a nice collection. I especially like your lawn decorations-it's nice to see the sun and the birds in place. I had to buy dill seeds this year because they did not reseed, for once. Herbs are so fun to grow too, aren't they? And cute little chairs too. Hugs-Erika

  8. Goodness, Jeannie. Your gorgeous garden puts mine to shame. SERIOUSLY. Your basil is SO healthy, and the dill has taken off far better than mine. I am truly in awe of everything, including all the beautiful flowers and the way you have them arranged. These are all so healthy and lovely. I'm truly impressed.

This year all my plants I purchased died before I could get them in the ground. I have decided to redo my entire front garden and back yard and patio, so they will be more photo friendly next summer. Again, I can't say enough about how adorable your gardens are, including those baby grand chairs.

  10. Oh wow...you have such pretty blooms! Everything in its own time, I say. My garden borders are a little scattered as far as blooming time, that makes it all the more interesting. I never thought sweet pea would grow as summer went on, at least someone told me. But I think its so pretty! Let me know how it does for you. You're doing something right!

I've tried wintering over all sorts of plants. And I've brought out potted plants in the summer. It never fails, I bring them in at fall and they have some sort of bugs that spread. I don't want to dissuade you...I've heard that you need to squirt them down with dish soap and water, let it sit, then hose them down before you bring them in. This could be the answer.

I LOVE the bird painter and your sun. Can you use cement nails to hang it? Its so cool!

Keep up the good work, I'd love to see this in person! :)

  13. So many beautiful flowering plants you have in your garden. Mine is mostly green with loads of succulents that I love! I have herbs too that I like to use in my cooking.
The tiny pink garden chairs are just so cute.
    Have a great day Jeanie.

  14. I left an earlier comment, Jeanie, and I note that no comments at all have appeared so far. This is a test to see if you have having issues.

    1. David, I had to turn on moderation so I could get comment notifications sent to my email (given blogger's latest issues) and I've been offline a few days so didn't see! I'll try to moderate more quickly but if you don't see something you've written pop up, that's probably why. Oh, and the BBT is a wonderful sandwich!

  15. Such a beautiful (and yummy) garden you have there, quite rich, really!
The chairs are cute and the sun makes a great object, too.
Our garden belongs to the whole house, 14 parties, and no one takes care of it so all we have is our little balcony, but that´s fine with me.

  16. I think your garden is delightful; and it's brilliant to use containers so you can transport them to the lake.

  17. Hello, Jeanie! Your garden is looking beautiful. I love the roses and all the beautiful flowers. It is great to grow your own herbs. The store tomatoes are usually bad. Happy Sunday, enjoy your day and the new week ahead!

  18. Love it! You have some beautiful stuff growing. I’ve never gotten used to the idea of annuals, so I don’t bother too much but they have added much loveliness to your garden for sure.

  19. Never be embarrassed to show your garden. You have some lovely things in bloom. I chuckled a bit when I saw that big sun face that you won. It was the gift that keeps on giving, someday you'll find the right place to hang it! (Cottage wall?) -Jenn

  20. You are a gardener..look at everything! Isn't it fun to nurture? And seeing the differences every day..sometimes evry few hours?
Enjoy this season of plenty..and I love all your NE crafts.

  21. Your plants look very happy! I'm so grateful for all the gardeners. I can enjoy their flowers without having to take care of them! :-)

  22. All looking vibrant! My pot plants don't look as happy. They are stressed with the early heat. I need to feed them today. Love the white bloom in the first photo. What is that? Enjoy your summer at your lake cottage. Sounds wonderful! Thanks for sharing your pretty garden. I love seeing what others have growing.

  23. Jeanie, wow, your garden plants are looking wonderful. I love container gardening, it’s easier for me now so not so much bending which leads to terrible backache. You have wonderful veggies and your lilies are lovely. Mine are still blooming but almost gone. You won’t see garden snaps here, still recovering from harsh winter and summer damage. Slowly coming back after having to replant so many shrubs. Hope we can finish this fall. Enjoyed your garden tour.........want to see those tomatoes too!

  24. Never be embarrased by your garden - it's real and it's lovely. Most of the gardens I've been sharing the last few months are someone else's. Mine is still recovering and sort of ho hum. Lovely flowers you have and I like your lettuce too.

  25. Your garden is lovely. I don't have a garden so I enjoy seeing others share theirs. Love all the little special touches in the garden.

  26. Your garden looks perfectly fine - nothing to be embarrassed about! Those birds are super cute! Are they individual ones or do they sit on something? I can't tell from the photo. When will you go to your cottage?

  27. Home grown food is always so much better than store bought! You've got some wonderful and colourful plants there. Lovely :)

  31. No need to feel embarrassed Jeanie, your garden looks lovely, everything looks healthy and pretty. I think the sun looks good against the wall. I would love to join you for a BLT, one of my favourite sandwiches, I've never tried it with basil, so I will put it on my shopping list :-)

    ReplyDelete
  32. You have so many blooming plants that look beautiful! You have a green thumb with herbs and flowers. You have reminded me I didn't plant any basil this year. I will be thinking about the BLT with basil sandwich all day!

  33. I wish I had your energy, I wanted to plant a tomato this year and just didn't get to it in time. I can live through yours tho...Your flowers and veggies look great!

  34. I don't know what you are talking about, Jeanie. Your plants look so strong and healthy and the colors are beautiful. My garden is totally come as you are. I will plant a few little things each season but they just seem to struggle along. The ones that are pretty are the ones who come back year after year on their own with no help from me, that's for sure..Happy Monday..xxoJudy

  35. I haven't had an email notification when someone comments on my blog for ages! Also I have a sneaking suspicion that when people sign up to receive emails of my latest blog post, they are not getting them either - I'm signed up to my own blog and they have stopped, also ages ago. I just think blogger is broken!

  36. Just testing to see if my comment goes through, Jeanie. Your garden is coming along nicely, and the pansies are stunning. love those red chairs!

  37. All your pots looks so happy and healthy! I tried to grow agapanthus with no luck and it gets too hot to quickly here for sweet peas but I do love them. Enjoy your lake time!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Jeanie, I love all of your blooming and healthy plants. The agapanthus is stunning my friend! The sweet peas won’t grow here, but I love yours. I always plant basil, it is a favorite taste of summer with a nice sun-ripened tomato from the garden! Thanks so much for sharing with Gardens Galore. When do you leave for the cottage?

  39. Your basil and lettuce are doing much better than mine! You have a lovely garden, so many pretty flowers.

  40. I think your garden looks beautiful! We have a lot of shade in our yard so don’t have many flowers. We have some hastas and day lilies in the back and lily of the valleys on the side of our house and that is about it! I am more excited about my vegetable garden which is in a community garden a little under a mile away. I planted tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, jalapeƱos, tomatillos, and some lettuce. I also planted basil but it’s greek basil and I didn’t realize how different it would be from traditional basil. So i might pull it out and try to find a basil plant to put there. I’m guessing our local nursery still has basil plants so I need to swing by there sometime when I don’t have Paul with me (it’s too busy in there to bring a stroller!!).

  42. Love all the color in your garden. My garden is going quiet -- too hot already!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Your garden looks great! I especially love the the sweet peas. I've never tried growing them? Are they difficult? I have to admit to being a little envious of your herbs. The crazy rain started here right before we were set to plant the herb garden, so it mostly didn't happen. Next year, though.

  44. Your gardens are beautiful, Jeanie! I think your rose looks lovely climbing up the wall. And the cute sun, you could always roll him around the garden when you want to move him to a new spot. ;) I had to do that with a really large round cement stepping stone that I used under a birdbath at our last house. It only moved just the once. ;)

    Enjoy your gardens!!!

  45. I see nothing for you to be embarrassed about! You have flowers and veggies to enjoy. I'm just wishing I had basil so I could have a BBT!

When are you coming to Dallas again? I'm thinking we need a fun day!

  46. Nothing to be embarrassed about girl!! It's all just lovely. I love basil and planted one in the front corner of my rose garden. Can NOT wait for those garden tomatoes. My lettuce is pretty much done. I think what's left will be bitter. I will replant it in the fall. I love the sun and the log planter!! Thanks for sharing with the Garden Party.

  49. Good Morning Jeanie!
I love these joyful gardens, and I love that they are in containers! That is so savvy to plant lettuce in a pot. I am going to do this next season. How convenient to walk straight out the backdoor and grab a leaf or two. Everything is gloriously cottage like and everything is so happy and colorful! Thank you for joining in the fun!
