Nature -- It's for the Birds! (And Us, too!)

Every now and then, one has an experience that is unexpectedly wonderful. That's what happened for Rick and me recently when we joined the Nature Conservancy for a nature walk at Erie Marsh Preserve, a nature preserve located in Erie, Michigan, not far from the Ohio Border.

Erie Marsh is one of the largest marshes on Lake Erie and is comprised of a total of 2,216 acres, 946 of which are part of a multi-year restoration plan. Its most significant feature is to provide a nesting area for migratory birds and waterfall. The Nature Conservancy of Michigan has implemented a plan to restore those 946 acres of degraded coastal wetlands to provide access to spawning areas for fish and control of invasive species. (For more, including videos, google Erie Marsh)

To be honest, I was a little worried when I looked at the Erie Marsh website. There are miles of trails and I worried a bit about my foot (which is acting up a bit again). But the event was about two hours and if I couldn't make that, then I was in real trouble! (As it was, I did just fine!)

It was a brisk, windy morning but the sun was shining and the sky that shade of blue I call "impossible" because it's hard to match it in paint, fabric or yarn. It was such a clear day, the sky only occasionally punctuated by a few white, puffy clouds. It made it perfect for spotting birds in flight. And it felt wonderful to be around water, especially water so beautifully populated!

This is migration season and I'd like to say I saw a lot of birds. My Merlin certainly picked up plenty more than I saw, as did our guide, Pete, who had a knack for spotting them in the leafy trees. (Let's just say I deleted a lot of photos of tree branches and sky shots!). They were hard to spot at a distance or in the trees, and digital delay made some of the photos a real challenge (birds fly, as you know, and it's hard to hit a moving target!). More often than not, by the time I got the binoculars up to my eyes and focused, those birds decided to move on! When one stayed, hooray!

No matter! I saw many. (Don't ask me what most of them are now -- some I didn't hear named, though Pete named them all.) But remembering didn't really matter.

It was the experience -- rather magical, walking these paths with others who were enthused and as delighted to be there as I was. And when you saw something, all the better.

I was especially impressed by the white pelicans. (I didn't know white ones existed!) In fact, the first one I saw, before the walk began, I thought might be a swan, with their long and graceful necks.

They flew in a peleton, seven or eight in most of the groups. This photo is radically cropped and hence, blurry, but imagine standing below, watching one flight after another. It was mesmerizing.

Pete explained that as birds migrate, they don't like to fly over water and and seek out spots where they can rest and eat before continuing on their journey. On this day, the birds were going south, finding a safe haven in this migratory sanctuary.

We spotted a bald eagle (another highly cropped shot). . .

. . . and egrets. More than a few!

I don't think I'd ever seen one with a fluffy head like this one!

And of course, I saw one of Harry's cousins!

There were swallows (I think this is a barn swallow, but please correct me if I'm wrong!)

We learned about controlled burns and controlling invasive species from Kim. It's a massive job, maintaining a spot like this and this team more than earns their keep!

Let's just say I was a very happy camper!

I am grateful to Leslie from the Nature Conservancy who invited Rick and me to come along.

 It was unforgettable.

 Gotta fly!

Your joy and appreciation really shine through. 👌

We were thinking of heading to a wilder sort of preserve tomorrow, but we understand that the blackflies have come out to play. we might now have to wait until fall.

That was a really cool day out. You saw some great birds. and even white pelicans. We drove through Norths Dakota once and I saw several there, and I remember being surprised that there were pelicans there since I'd always seen them at the shore. And the good news is that you made it just fine and everything went OK. That makes it even better, right? Have a super weekend. hugs-Erika

I love pelicans with their funny walk on land and gliding in the air. I know about white ones but am more used to the gray here in Florida.

What a wonderful day observing the migratory birds and being with interesting people in nature! I amlways find it difficult to get many photos of birds unless they sit still and let me focus my camera which does not happen too often..lol. I;m gla dyour foot held up--believe me, I know how painful feet can be!

What a fun outing you had. You got lots of nice photos of the birds. You mentioned that you never seen a white pelican, that's the only kind I've ever seen and that was in southern Oregon. Enjoy the weekend!

Your time spent with nature in the Marsh Preserve must have been amazing. Not only seeing so many different species of birds, the marsh provided spectacular landscapes! I'm happy you didn't have any trouble with your foot or the time. Like you I'm always concerned with if I can do that! I know it was fun, just look at your famous happy smile. Happy weekend Jeanne.....

I am green with envy Jeanie...I love birds and I know how elusive they can be when trying to photograph them. (especially if using binoculars, because once I remove them from my eyes...I can't see my intended bird to photograph) LOL I understand all your photos of branches and leaves. Good for you to hang in there, trusting your body to stay upright. LOL. I'm sure Rick enjoyed the tour as much as you did and the birds you did capture were so beautiful. Have a wonderful week-end.🥰

What a great event! As Bill alluded to, white pelicans were abundant in a south-central Oregon town we lived in. They were fun to watch.

It is obvious it was a great experience by seeing your smile! I had to chuckle when you said you deleted a lot of photos of branches, I do too!

Welcome to my world! I'm so glad you had this experience. The Nature Conservancy is a wonderful organization; four of the spots I regularly visit are Conservancy sites (especially Nash Prairie, and the Sandylands Preserve.) I was surprised you'd never seen white pelicans. They aren't here year round, but in winter they're quite common; then, in spring, they head north to breed. And controlled burns? They're a fact of prairie life, and increasingly are being used in smaller places. They're complicated to pull off, since everything from humidity to wind speed has to be just right, but they do a wonderful job of renewing the earth. Your smile's the perfect ending to your post!

Debbie said...

you look great and so happy!! this marsh looks like a great spot for birders and bird watchers sure do know it!! your egrets are in breeding plumage, the green around the eye, and the long fluffy plumage off it's back!! ii don't see pelicans here, i really enjoy seeing pictures of them here!! t's all those "misses" that provide these great images. enjoy your sunday!!

What a great walk you had. Thank you for sharing it with us. I love the shot of the Barn Swallow. My daughter has a pair that nests on her porch every year. She always looks forward to their return. Also, your unnamed bird appears to be a Tree Swallow, another wonderful bird.

There is a special joy in wandering through a marsh beneath an impossibly blue sky, where even fleeting glimpses of migrating birds feel like small rewards offered by nature to those patient enough to look upward.

Dear Jeanie,
you definitely look very happy in your lovely selfie! And I believe you completely that you were thrilled by this nature reserve and your outing with like-minded people, but also that you couldn't remember everything. And that it was difficult to photograph the birds in flight.
I can remember similar experiences (e.g., our trip to see the great bustards – that was four years ago, but you said it, such trips are unforgettable: https://rostrose.blogspot.com/2022/04/grotrappen-balz-ausflug-zum.html ). We couldn't remember everything then either; many photos simply showed blurry images or an empty sky, but the experience was fantastic. We'll also never forget the birdwatching walks with David in Canada!
I'm so glad you and Rick enjoyed the trip so much!
Thank you for your kind words on the passing of my sister-in-law 💛.
Hugs and all the best from Austria, Traude

I wish I could fly like a bird, flapping my wings and landing now and then to eat and rest. Better than being strapped to my seat on a plane for hours.

You saw a lot of different birds at the nature preserve. Some, I don't see here where I live. I just love that first bird with the skinny legs. I used to always see them in my hometown. That white pelican is HUGE! That was nice that you had a guide too. The bald eagle is a grand bird for sure, and it's rare to see them. And the egret is beautiful. Great shot of that one. It sounds like you learned a lot of things while you were there. We have those controlled burns from time to time up here in the mountains. You look happy smiling in that last picture, Jeanie. : )

I can feel your enthusiasm in this post, Jeanie. Wonderful that your foot didn't act up during the walk, so you were able to fully enjoy it. I love these kinds of outings very much - most of them I do through out Regional Parks program and through the nature preserve we are members of. Every time I learn something interesting and worth knowing. Your photos are beautiful. Those White Pelicans are something else, aren't they? I've seen them in the winter in our Laguna (they usually spend the summers more inland), but the Brown Pelicans (that I love love love) are here year round. Wonderful, impressive, graceful birds. What a great day you had!
