I've shared a lot of nature in recent posts, but those visits (and life in general) have included some delightful "close encounters" with some lovely people, a road trip, dining out, and even a critter or two! So, a look at life in general!
Life in general includes blog friends and one real treat for this month of May was a meet-up with blogger Anno, who came to Lansing for lunch. (Do check out her "Artifacts and Annotations" HERE.) We had such a good long talk at lunch and on our walk to the ditch -- and yet, we both realized there was so much we didn't even get to during that time. Another meet-up is definitely in the offing.
We also had a couple of lovely sightings (no Harry yet, though). Those red-winged blackbirds can be hard to photograph. They land "high" in the trees and don't stay there long. This one was posing for us!
And, there was still a bit of color on the redbud trees. (Sadly, that's gone by now!)
A few days later, Rick and I took our road trip to the Erie Marsh nature preserve. (See the last post for more on that.) Since it was a long drive and we had to be there early in the morning, we decided to go the evening before (which was Mother's Day) and spend the night with his stepsister and her husband, who weren't far from the marsh. We decided we'd stop for dinner at a lovely restaurant along the way that we've always loved. What we forgot was that it was Mother's Day and we didn't have a reservation.
They told us we could sit at the bar and not knowing other restaurants in the Ann Arbor area (and not having reservations at any of them either) we agreed. I wouldn't say it was awful but it wasn't good. The bartender was working his tail off but he wasn't paying any attention to us, so even getting a glass of wine was slow, taking our order even slower. And when it came, it was beyond disappointing. I love risotto and make excellent risotto (but not often). So I ordered that, which included lump crab (clearly missing in action), asparagus and hot peppers (not a good combo). When it arrived it looked like gruel or cream of wheat or shrimp and grits without the shrimp. Do "real" Italians put risotto in the blender? I'd love to know because that's what it felt like. At $34, not good.
Rick's wasn't much better, just warm and not close to hot. And service was non-existent. No one checking to see if we needed more water or if our dinner was OK. Rick wasn't happy with the $100 bill (tax and tip being part of that) -- and I agreed. And I wasn't happy six hours later when, around midnight, I spent some time on my knees in the bathroom as what was left of it left my system. Paesano's may hear from one or both of us! (Postscript: I took the advice of many of you who commented about letting them know and they have offered a generous make-good. I'll write more about that soon! So, they're back on the A-List.)
But, prior to hurling dinner, we arrived at Kim and John's house. And what a house! Kim (aka Kimberly Arden, a remarkable polymer artist) is the most colorful, creative woman and it shows in the bright colors of her home and her fun and eclectic collections. Check out her fireplace wall. I walked in and that dinner was forgotten and I felt blissfully happy. I'd say that this qualifies for both a Mural Monday and a Sunday in the Art Room post!
Her kitchen is wonderful with lots of personal touches, like the polymer squares she has on the cupboard molding.
Here is a slightly fuzzier shot but one showing more detail. Can you imagine doing that -- each and every little square all around the kitchen? (Not to mention actually making those canes and little squares.)
And I was charmed by her canister set! (Not to mention all the colorful accessories and art.
We stayed up probably far too late talking (given that both of us had early and full days coming up). And I throttled myself for not getting a photo of, if not the four of us, at least Rick and Kim together. So, here's one from a few years ago!
But I did get one of sweet Cherry, who can twirl around on her hind legs and hop several "steps" (or hops).
Another close encounter of the friendship kind came when my friend Judy and her husband Dick were in town. We had a late lunch (well, lunch for them, beverages for Rick and me). It was wonderful to have some time and to talk in person, not on Zoom!
Two more critter pix, because I'm not quite sure where else to put them. Here's a little ground hog (are ground hogs and wood chucks the same thing?) We spotted this one when we left Erie Marsh preserve.
And Mr. Chips, who probably accounts for the lion's share of devouring bird seed, but he's so cute and so tenacious, I don't mind.
Life is good. Friendships and fun are even better!

What a trying day and disappointing meal! Meet up with blogger friends are always nice!
Oh no - a bad meal with bad service that left you ill is horrible!! I am glad you had other wonderful encounters to lift your spirits, though. The walk with your blog friend sounds especially wonderful!
Definitely let that restaurant owner know of your experience. At least you had fun with your friends. Mr Chips is adorable. I do think that a ground hog and a woodchuck are the same critter. We have one on our property that I call Wilson.
On the bright side, Kim’s house looks like an absolute dreamscape of color, and those polymer clay kitchen details are seriously mind-blowing. Cheers to real-life hangouts, cozy road trips, and the undeniable cuteness of Mr. Chips!
What a bummer about the dinner out! We go out so infrequently that I really expect things to be nice when we do! That's really too bad.
Having a meal that wasn't satisfying is bad and quite depressing especially at that price. At least your friends and you had a great time enjoying each other.
We went out for Mothers Day once, many years ago. There was nothing charming about it. Now we go out before of after, even for cafes usually.
Oh dear ... sorry about the very poor meal.
On the positive side, you had some great meet-ups with friends.
All the best Jan
PS Mr. Chips is cute :)
What an unfortunate restaurant experience -- I'm glad you recovered enough to enjoy the rest of the weekend. And everything else sounds wonderful, so many great times with the best of friends. Kim's artwork is amazing, and I love the color in her home. Thanks for the link to her website.
And thanks, too, for including our visit as one of your close encounters of the nicest kind -- it was a wonderful time! Love your critter pics!
We love risotto and I make it often, and even if I say so, it is really good. I am so sorry that meal was a huge disappoint and costly. Looks like everything else turned out great. Kim’s home is creative and fun! So happy you had time with blog friends. Have a great rest of the week, Jeanie!
Sad with that restaurant - only good thing you made it home for "throwing the food out"!
Such fun meetings and places, always great to meet bloggy-friends in person!
The critters could go on Saturdays to Eilleen.
I've never seen a ground hog in the flesh, I love that you catch up with your blogging friends, and always love when I do too - anyday I hope we meet Jeanie - sorry about your dodgy meal!
Have a great day

...Yes, woodchucks and groundhogs are exactly the same animal (scientifically known as Marmota monax).
I need Kim to come to my house and give me some tips to make it more colorful. We have so much wood that the colors seem to get lost in brown. :) I love her kitchen and that fireplace is very cool! Sounds like a great couple of weeks except of course for dinner. I hate when that happens- well getting sick and spending a lot of $$$ for a not so good meal and not getting service. This is a fun post, and it looks like you've been enjoying yourself. Hope the fun continues. hugs-Erika
My husband makes a delish risotto.. I hear you re a bad one;(What fun meet ups..Her necklaces are outstanding and her home so charming.Fun indeed!
I agree, life is good. I love seeing your wildlife and reading about your friends.
That is too bad about the bad dinner out and that it made you sick. It's always nice to meet up with friends and the dog is adorable!!
Oh my the polymer (spelling?) artist's home is so unique! Glad you were able to meet up with so many friends!
Blogger meetings are wonderful. I myself had one years ago in Croatia by the sea in Labin... Hug!
meeting up with a fellow blogger is a joy. I agree that risotto does not look like any risotto I have ever had, and it was pricy for what is was!
I had forgotten how colorful your blog site is! sorry about the meal. That has happened to me, too.
Jeanie I am so happy you and Rick had a wonderful adventure...well, except for the disappointing meal....😔 and when it is costly on top of that, it is a disaster. I hope you do talk to the owners...although they most likely will say it was unavoidable due to the 'crowd'. You are right about Kim's colorful home! What a happy place and I love the quote over their fireplace from "Les Miserables." It is always fun to meet up with blogging friends...they understand us don't they?...Have a great and wonderful week, my friend.
What a lovely time you had and yes her house is amazing!
Sorry about the meal and to add insult to injury the bill.
Cathy
A bad restaurant can be a very disappointing experience. Last time we were in Arizona friends drove over from San Diego and we took them out to what was billed as “the best Italian restaurant in town.” The food was awful, including lasagna heated in a microwave oven with dried out corners and cold in the centre, and not a single bottle of Italian wine in the place. I forget what it cost, but they should have paid us!
Oh I can see how that delightful home put that bad dinner out of your mind. What lovely artistic touches everywhere.
Wow, that dinner was beyond disappointing! Such an awful experience! But I'm so glad that the other experiences you had with your friends were wonderful and rewarding. May you have many, many more of the latter and no more of the former!
Oh no, dinner sounds pretty terrible! I do love that picture of the fields! Apart from the food poisoning, it sounds like a fun time.

I am so happy to see you feeling better and smiling!
I loved seeing Kim’s colorful home. She is so creative.
Sorry for the horrible dining experience. Ugh!
But what a fun friends week for you.
Enjoy the rest of your week! Keep smiling! 😊
What an awful dinner experience. A lot of restaurants don't know how to make risotto. At least you had a good time with your friends. I love that fireplace wall.
Sorry to hear about the horrible dinner. But Kimberly's home is absolutely delightful.
How disappointing on your dinner. Worse you got sick. The redwings here stay low in the marsh. Janice
So sorry for the bad meal, yuck.
Charming home and art, lovely people, happy travels and darling pup!
Love your smiles, Virginia
Oh, no!! I am sorry you got a bad meal!!! Never ever fun!!!
She really has a delightful, fun and cheery home.
Hello Jeanie,
I am sorry about the meal and service, it sounds very disappointing and expensive. I love the colorful home! The critters are cute and the dog Cherry is adorable. It is nice to spend time with friends and family. Take care, enjoy your day and the holiday weekend ahead.
You are so much fun, Jeanie! I watched as storms went through your city. Quite something.
You certainly are living the good life -- well, apart from that meal. I didn't have a clue about the woodchuck/groundhog, so I looked it up. They're regional names for the same creature. The woodchuck, of course, is the one who gave rise to the wonderful tongue-twisting question: how much wood can a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood? LOL!
That fireplace is so lovely. I'd feel happy every time I looked at it.
So much goodness except for the meal we won’t mention. Hugs. xoxo.
Jeanie, it is always fun to visit friends and family and be overwhelmed with their decorating and art. I know you as an artist appreciated all of Kim's creative design and decor. Sounds like a lovely time except of course your dining experience and becoming sick. So glad you were better for your visit. I enjoyed all the photos you shared of your fun. Happy Memorial Day weekend sweet friend.......
So sorry you and Rick has such a bad experience at the restaurant. On top of bad, a big expense too. So glad meeting up with friends took away the terrible dining experience. Love seeing the critters.
Interesting! Love all the pictures and the groundhog acceptance . I think we all have a bit of groundhog in us.
What fun meet ups, in spite of the disappointing meal in Ann Arbor. At Kim's - I spy black & whites checks among the polymer trim above the cabinets, hehe. Fun!
Human connection is so wonderful - you were indeed blessed.
What a wonderfully human slice of life. Warm conversations, disappointing risotto, midnight regrets, long roads, and then the restorative joy of stepping into a house so full of colour and creativity that it completely redeemed the journey.
Looking at the fireplace wall makes me smile - it's so cute and warm
I do have palmer clay, although never used it.
Sounds like some wonderful visits with great (and very artistic) friends, and a few good wildlife sightings, too! Too bad about the bad meal and service, though. I've never seen risotto that looked like that! Hopefully you will be offered a 'make-up' meal, or at least a refund.
Love the happy, colorful decor and the amazing tile border! We don't have groundhogs around here, but they sure are cute! I love chipmunks, too. Especially when their cheeks are stuffed full! x K
Oh, that red-winged blackbird is so beautiful! I have never seen one before. We don't have those in the Netherlands!
OMGosh that food likes like, well you really don't want me to say. No we Italians do NOT put risotto in the blender. I'm sorry it was so bad. I hope you complained. Ohhh what a fabulous home with all of that color. Great photos and I'm glad you had a good time at Kim's.
, Yes, groundhogs and woodchucks are the same thing.
Sorry that your meal made you sick. I fortunately have not had that experience for quite some time.
Love that fireplace!
I love the colours and whimsy of the art in Kim's house too -- what fun photos!
Oh dear, that meal sounds like such a letdown, especially when you’re looking forward to something special and it ends up making you sick.
I’m glad the rest of your week was filled with brighter moments, though.
It’s wonderful how good friends and little encounters with nature can balance out the disappointments. 🌿💛
Hello Jeanie,
I enjoyed all your critters in this post. The doggie is a favorite.
the Redwinged Blackbird is pretty. We see lots of groundhogs in our neighborhood and the cute chipmunks. Great critter photos.
Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Take care, have a great day and a happy weekend! PS, thank you for leaving me a comment.
I also make risotto often and I think that restaurant either used the wrong type of rice, or else had it prepared for a long time ahead and added too much broth to it before serving. It did not look appetizing at all. I'm glad Kim and Jihn's home wa ssuch a delight to see--Kim is so talented! How bright and colorful everyhting looked! It was also nice to see the "critters" in today's post!
That restaurant experience was truly awful. I hope they come up with something to make good for that. We avoid going out on Mother's Day (we don't go out eating much anyway), it's usually a trip to somewhere along the coast with fish & chips at a seafood shack that we love. But what is far more delightful is all the visits with friends - those are the times that really count.
Sorry about the restaurant.
Thank you for sharing this post with SITAR. Have a nice Sunday.
Life truly shines in posts like this. I loved the mix of nature, friendship, travel, and everyday adventures. Even the disastrous risotto made for quite a story!
So sorry you got sick from your meal. The art in your friends house is amazing. I would love all the color. It just feels happy. How wonderful to have dear friends to spend time with.
That’s too bad about your dinner. Thankfully you reached out to them. I make risotto occasionally because it does take time. The only time I ordered it was on a cruise and it was excellent with asparagus in it.
Glad you had such fun visits with friends, nice! And Mr. Chips is a cutie ... I couldn't deny him the feeder either.
Oh my Jeanie, that whole experience at the restaurant sounded abysmal. As for the rest, lovely to get together with your friends and that pup is a cutie.
