So, What Else Is New?

It's been quite a couple of weeks. To be honest, I'm getting a little tired of it all! But the best part was Valentine's Day! Rick pulled out all the stops -- a terrific gift and a dinner to die for with wonderful wine!

The main course? My all-time favorite, shrimp and grits! He knows me well!

He liked the book I made for him. I was lucky to find a book about the right size, handwrote the poems and did collages of key events from our year. The poetry isn't great, but it's definitely from the heart!

As you may know from this blog, I have AFib and have been in AFib since mid-December. On February 16, I was scheduled for a cardioversion, where basically they shock the heart into submission. You are under anesthetic for this, so fasting began at midnight the day before. My procedure was at 1 p.m. and I had to be there two hours before that. Rick pulled saintly duty and went with me.

I was pretty hungry, pretty tired and the longer I waited, pretty cranky. The doc came in and said it would only be a few minutes and about 45 minutes later I was still waiting to be wheeled down to the surgical area. Turned out there was an emergency and over two and a half hours later, they took me down. By then, my head was screaming. The procedure itself is fairly short and I was home by 5, but it was a long day.

Then the next day, off to see the ENT. My sinus CT scan results were pretty scary (total opacification of the sinuses behind the forehead, among other things) -- which explains why I have almost impossible headaches every day. The only way out of this gig is sinus surgery. That will take place sometime late next month, as they want to wait for my MRI (ordered for another doc, due to the double vision). It gets way too complicated. It's getting old and I'm tired of it.

But, I'm not about to let that slow me down any more than necessary. I enjoyed a wonderful lunch with my friend Carol, sharing photos and good times. We were also joined by a mutual friend, Pat, who moved several years ago to Petoskey up north. I saw Pat and his wife Susan last summer and it was good to see him again.

And I also had a lunch with friends Susie and Jane, this time at Susie's house. The walls are filled with art by her late husband, Dick (I wrote about him HERE and HERE).

I always feel completely uplifted being in that house-- or any time I'm with those two.

(And we eat well, too! This time -- grilled cheese with roasted veggies, Waldorf salad and I brought baklava and chocolates for dessert!

I made a wonderful dinner -- well, I started a wonderful dinner. Rick finished it. It was a delicious chicken piccata recipe. Blogger Carole had linked to this New York Times recipe from her blog and it was fabulous. (Rick added some white wine to it, because -- well, it was just sitting there on the counter, so why not?) We had it over brown rice instead of the pasta but either way would be fabulous. (Sorry, no photo!)

The Three Pines puzzle came together well. Yes, I did get to the cursing point, doing those flowers that all look the same! And yes, as in almost every puzzle, I became convinced pieces were (Though there was a distinct possibility that someone in my family with a tail brushed them off the table. They are very hard to see on my rug!) All was well, all 1,000 pieces!

Speaking of someone with a tail, Lizzie is going through some changes. Because she is in early kidney disease, she's now taking a daily pill (broken into two doses and mixed with a treat). She doesn't like it, but so far, so good. I also was told by my vet to cut out her kibble and since then, Lizzie repeatedly tells me that she is hungry all the time and to get with the program and feed her more. So, we're trying to regulate that -- feed her enough to make up for what she's not getting -- and not too much.

The vet also wants her to exercise more but that is proving to be a harder sell. I can relate.

I've been enjoying the Olympics, reading a bit (between headaches) and finally finished the cowl (which started out as a dishcloth.) I think it's pretty cute. Now that I know this pattern, I might have to do something else with it before I forget!

On another note, for a brief few days we saw brownish-green grass in the yard as most all of the snow melted. And yes, it is back. But I'll take those days as I can get them!

I took a walk to the Ditch. It's still very iced over.

But the geese were out in force!

I leave you with a photo of my girl.

Her world in one of pure bliss. Except when she's hungry!

  1. Hello, Jeanie
I hope all goes well with the sinus surgery. Your friend has a lovely house, looks very cheery with all the colorful paintings. I hope your sweet Lizzie does well with her meds, less food and more exercise. Nice capture of the geese at the Ditch. Happy Sunday, enjoy your day and the new week ahead.

  2. ...Jeanie, if Rick is trying to make me look bad, he did a great job of it! Sinus surgery, I've never heard of this. I hope that you can get some relief.

  3. Dear Jeanie, I wish you all the best with the sinus surgery. Your photos are lovely and Lizzie is adorable.
Beautiful paintings, good food and nature are all captivating.

  4. It's just one ailment after another! I hope the upcoming surgery brings you relief. So many doctors. Predictive text insisted that should be tractors. Hm.

  5. sorry you need sinus surgery, but at least you have a hospital to do it! and you don't have a doctor telling you that it's time you accept that you are getting old, as happened to me!!! Hope all goes well and you'll soon be mended!

  6. Glad to hear that the cardioversion is behind you, and it sounds like the recovery wasn't too hard, either, since you were to able to attend another doctor's appointment the next day. I hope the MRI goes well, and the sinus surgery, too. Is there any chance that the blockages in your sinuses are affecting the double vision? Maybe one surgery could fix both problems?

So glad you had some visits with friends, plenty of cheerful colors, and a fantastic Valentine's Day celebration -- LOVE your book of poetry! -- to buoy you through all of this. Feeling ready for whatever next week might bring? Wishing you all the best!
    Hugs, anno

  7. Jeanie, I'm sorry you are going through all these health issues. I was looking at that puzzle, and was surprised to see you finished it with your sinus troubles. The grilled cheese lunch sounds really good, and my mother-in-law used to make the best Waldorf salad. Baklava, Yummy! You know, I've always wanted to try Grits. Cute photos of Lizzie, and I'm sorry to hear she has kidney disease, poor girl. While your snow has melted, we are in full winter season here, and just had a big snow. I enjoyed the Ditch photos, and the Geese are already starting to get ready for Spring. Take care, dear Jeanie, and I wish you good days the remainder of February. : )

  20. Hopefully your A-fib is now under control, and hopefully the sinuses get taken care of. That day with the A-Fib would have made me very very cranky, or maybe I should say hangry. I'm sending good energy your way. Your Valentine's Day sounds wonderful .You'e got a good one with Rick. And boy, your friend's Susie's house makes me happy just looking at it. Oh those colors are great. Especially with the way this winter is going. Will it ever end? We have the big storm coming our way tonight and all day tomorrow...I had we are just north enough to get only the northern edge of it. Take care, and I hope the headaches aren't too terrible while you wait for your appointment. hugs-Erika

  26. My goodness! And yet, in spite of all your troubles, you put together that puzzle. You have the patience of Job. Your meals sound great. You do eat well. Good luck with the surgery. Having sinus and Afib problems would be unbearable for me. Hang in there, Jeanie. I’m rooting for you.

  27. That was a long wait for your surgery. John had one scheduled years ago-a pretty scary one. He was supposed to go in at 8am (surgery at 10am) and they had a major emergency. He did not go to surgery until 10:30PM. It was a long day for all of us.
My daughter-in-law had the sinus surgery and it was life changing for her. The worst part for her was sitting at home with the 'cup thing' she had to wear under her nose for a few days....lol. That has been 15 years ago and she has never had problems since then. I have a feeling you will do well, too.
Always nice to get together with friends and share fun and meals.
Wonderful book you made for Rick! What a special gift!
Colder than a witches you-know-what here again and more snow coming later this week. I am OVER winter! xo Diana

  28. My husband was at the wildlife refuge last week, and he saw hundreds of snow geese there. I should post the picture he took. I've never seen a Snow Goose in person. I'm sure they will be returning to your part of the world soon.

  33. I'm so sorry you are going through all these health things. I'm sure you're very tired of it all but I hope you get some relief once you get the sinus surgery. That might help quite a bit. Was the afib procedure a success? I hope so. And man that puzzle looks tough, I'd curse too. Enjoy your walks and I hope it'll start warming up. I like your kitty photos too. Lizzie has a good life.

  34. Did I just do a partial comment? If so, I apologize. I don’t know what happened. I am sorry about your health issues but pleased to see that you are doing positive things and enjoying life as best you can.

  35. Your first sure was a great and prolific artist!

My mom and husband both had the same heart issues as you do, so I have a little understanding of what you're going through. Hang in there!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh Jeanie, so many health issues; but at least you have Rick to lean on. When I was in my teens(60-70 yrs ago), the doctor talked to my parents about sinus surgery for me, but there were so many drawbacks then. It was decided for me to decide once I was older. Long story short, never had the surgery and my sinuses improved with age. I love your photos of the ditch and Lizzy. P.S. I’ve never tasted grits.

    ReplyDelete
  37. What a month you're having. Praying that each day will find you stronger and healthier. And I'm loving those photos of sweet Lizzie. Making me smile right now in the middle of this blizzard, friend.

  38. oh Jeanie, so sorry to hear about upcoming sinus surgery....that among other health issues makes us feel so frail doesn't it? On the brighter side, I love shrimp & grits...what a delight Rick made for you. Sorry about the Kitty issues, they become like a family member and it breaks our hearts when they are suffering, even a little bit. Your photos always make me smile. Keep on keepin' on my friend. hugs

    ReplyDelete
  39. So sorry Jeanie, with all of your health issues. Another surgery can be frustrating. Hopefully all can be resolved and you can continue living a full life. Your photos are uplifting. Take care and keep positive.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Dear Jeanie, your health problems sound—to put it mildly—quite unpleasant. But thankfully, the other things you've had in your life sound like a nice counterbalance: lovely Valentine's Day gifts, get-togethers with friends, good food, a victory over the jigsaw puzzle pieces 😅. And apart from the kidney problems, Lizzie seems to be doing quite well... Our Chiller is in a similar situation; he has stomach/intestinal issues (apparently, according to the vet, a chronic inflammation). He at least likes the stomach-friendly dry food, but the medicated wet food would be better. He ate it at first, but now he refuses it completely. But otherwise, he seems to be enjoying life...
Presumably, it's simply that we all (humans and animals) have to carry around a few unpleasant things with us in life—and a bit more as we get older...—but if we otherwise make the most of it and season life with a pinch of humor, that's worth a lot... (Speaking of "unpleasant things" and "humor"—I had a good grin on my face at "the big orange pig" in your poem 😉😝)
Hugs and all the best from Austria, Traude
PS: The colorful house of your friend is GREAT!

  42. SInus surgery!! You poor thing..what's next??? I sure hope it helps..I can't imagine having headaches all the time...I remember long ago that they did sinus surgeries (SMR's) on teenagers quite often) Poor Lizzie..sorry to hear about her kidneys..That's very common in our kitties..Oh my, a lot going on for sure..

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh gosh. Sinus surgery on the horizon. Yikes. My sinus surgery was so helpful but dang it was a painful procedure! I hope to never go through it again but if I was in need of it, I'd choose the surgery over the misery. But gosh, you can't catch a break! I hope the cardioversion did the trick but that's a long wait while fasted...

Well done on the puzzle. That looks tricky w/ all the similar colored flowers! I started a puzzle when I had my puzzle party on 2/7 but have not taken it out sense. It's been too busy to think about it. I use a puzzle mat so I can tuck it away when not working on it, but when it's out of sight, it's out of mind!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Best wishes the surgery goes well, oh, being sick is so bad. I have such trouble eating here, I can relate to feeling miserable, a big hug from here - you still sound so positive it lifts me up, too!
Rick sure is the best :-) And yipee to meeting friends!
The puzzle would have me... argh! It´s beautiful but argh! ;-)
Have a great day despite and because!

  47. Here's hoping the sinus surgery goes smoothly and helps with the headaches! I'm so glad you have Rick and good friends to support you and to have fun times with!

  48. You are really going through it, Jeanie, and I sure feel for you. My mother had that sinus surgery, I remember. It does not sound like fun but I am sure you will feel better afterwards.
Dick's art is so happy! Those colors would just make me smile. And the lunch looks delicious.
Sending hugs, and hoping you have a few days of goodness before going back for more medical stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  49. You know, I've heard people talk about sinus headaches for years, and never thought much about it. From what you say, some of them may have been suffering more than I realized. I had no idea that there's surgery available; I hope that takes care of them (and perhaps your double vision in the process). It's a shame that the process can't move along more quickly, but I guess when it comes to medical procedures, the old carpenters' adage -- "measure twice, cut once" -- applies just as well.

I laughed at the thought of getting Lizzie to exercise more. I had a sudden vision of her on a treadmill, but that's not going to happen! I was asked to kitty sit again this week, so I have the pleasure of a cuddly kitty to enjoy. I hope you have plenty of pleasures to enjoy in the coming days, too!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm saying prayers for your procedure next week. I hope it eliminates some of your pain. Ain't getting old crazy? I got a lump on my leg, and I get all sorts of crazy notions of what it is. Doctor is ordering an ultrasound to find out what's up. I fear it's an artery or vein blockage. Ugh. When I consider the alternative, I guess an egg under the skin beats pushing up daisies.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm glad your cardioversion went well but sad you had to wait so long to that day to have it done. My son and oldest grandson both had sinus surgery done in the past, as they both had deviated septum's and turbinate's, and they feel much better now and have less headaches and breathing problems, so I hope that surgery will also be of benefit. Poor Lizzie! It seems so many cats get kidney problems in old age! I hope Lizzie's condition stabilizes with her new diet. Your Valentine dinner looks so delicious and the book you made for Rick is so heartfelt and creative.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hi Jeanie -- so sorry to hear about the sinus trouble. Does "opacification" mean it's simply infected, or is it more of a structural problem? I guess if it needs surgery it's more than in infection. At any rate I hope that pain vanishes promptly!

Your friend's house is so colorful! And it's nice to see the ditch again, even in icy form. Hopefully Harry has flown away somewhere warm.

  53. I love your holiday traditions, especially the valentine book!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Jeanie, I'm sorry for all those nasty health issues. I hope the sinus surgery will help - is that also connected to the double vision? Those headaches sound awful and I really hope they will be a thing of the past once you had surgery. Kudos to you that despite all of this you're still very active and have good friends by your side - and of course Rick!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Dear Jeanie Thank you kindly for your wise words of help and your caring comment when I announced that I was leaving my blog. You can't imagine how much I appreciated your words , but now the situation has been reversed and I have made another post explaining why I'm returning to my blog. It felt rather awkward because of all the fond farewells but it's reality and a true account of what happened. I'm so sorry about your sinus issues and never knew there was surgery available to correct this distressing condition, I hope all goes well. it looks like you have been going through a period of ill health which I hope improves. Your lovely husband Rick is a gem, and takes good care of you. I'm glad this month was not all doom and gloom and you managed to see dear friends, I love the cheerful atmosphere of your friends home and all those colourful paint ings. It's distressing when our pets suffer from illnesses and I hope Lizzie improves. Her photos are delightful and it was nice to see the geese at the ditch-.
    All the best Jeanie

  56. You have had a lot going on that is new and quite old, Jeanie. Those health issues have really been taking a toll on your time and glad to read that you have been able to get out and be with good friends. Also, the special meal by Rick looked delicious, admittedly I have never had grits and shrimp, maybe a future try? Hope the sinus surgery goes well and gives you relief from those annoying headaches.

    ReplyDelete
  57. You have been having a hard time with your health lately Jeanie. I do hope your sinus op helps with the headaches and double vision. I didn't know what grits was so had to "investigate". Jose cooked a prawn curry for Valentine's day, and we had strawberries with cream and Port wine for dessert. Poor Lizzie with the beginning of kidney disease, not easy. One of my cats had it, she was put on a special kidney food which she didn't like at all. Poor kitties, hard for them and hard for us too to see them suffer.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Well you certainly are going through a lot right now. However, you are keeping your spirits up and enjoying each day. Your friend's house with all of her husbands art work is fabulous. She found some clever ways to display them. So sorry about your kitty too. Stay warm over there.

  59. I am sorry to hear about your heart and headache problems. At least it seems your heart got the right treatment for a while. Yes, it is always something. I also feel so tired whenever you have to go to the doctor, or do a treatment. I hope the treatments will go well and that you feel better soon.
What a wonderful Valentine's dinner Rick made for you. What a guy!
Take care and enjoy the time with friends and family.

But thank you for telling us about the many good things you are also lucky enough to have in your life too! Your posts are always inspirational, with nice things in them. This time, I simply love the pictures of Dick and Susie's house. That couch cover complements Dick's joyful paintings so well - I wondered if he had a hand in the design. .
