February -- The Longest Short Month of the Year

It's still mid February and while I don't want to wish time away, boy -- it seems like a long month! At least we've had some fun -- and fun things to look forward to!

Rick was so desperate for good skiing that he headed north to spend some time with Greg, then kept going up to Sault Ste. Marie Canada, (aka The Soo). He found a spot he thought was heaven on earth.

This spot, called Stokley Creek, had everything he could want -- great ski trails, breakfast and dinner included, a nice room, no TV (fine for Rick) but Wifi, and a wonderful gathering spot with a cozy fireplace and lots of people who appeared to be regulars and who were welcoming and friendly!

After he left, he headed back home, with a stop at the cottage. A lot of readers who see my Postcards From the Lake posts every summer when I am t the lake for a few months, ask why I just don't move up there year round. Here's one reason. (There are many others.)

Here's another.

The new neighbors who bought Jim's lovely place two doors down decided to make a very big house even bigger. "Big" seems to be a trend and it's one I hate. It just feels wrong at the lake -- the quiet little lake with the small cottages, where people not lucky enough to have their own room bunked with others in the biggest room. That spot where everyone crowded around the table because -- well, that was the size of the table. (That's another reason I'm a summer person -- too many big things.)

Our house is little -- two bedrooms, a main room with a  kitchen on one end and world's tiniest bathroom. But it just feels right.

It's a cottage. Not your house.

On another note, I finally started my Three Pines puzzle (thank you, Lin!). Here's how I am so far.

And here is the drawing of what we'll have when we're finished. I have a feeling that when I get to all the pink blooms I will be saying many things that one shouldn't say. At least, not around seven and nine-year-olds. Well, they won't be around while I do the puzzle so they're safe for awhile!

I've been watching the Olympics, reading and finally figured out the pattern of the dish cloth I was knitting. I decided to just keep going and use up the yarn. Maybe it will be a cowl. Or maybe just a reminder to stick to the basics!

And, I did enjoy another fun lunch with my WKAR retiree gang. One of the best parts this time was that a friend who moved about four hours away drove in (we rarely se him in the winter) and another who had been so ill we all thought we might lose him back sometime ago has recovered and came for the first time. Seeing him again, and looking so well, was a real joy!

February is Valentine month and every year I make Rick a book of very badly written poetry that summarizes main events in our year. And every year I do it close to the wire. So, I've been working on that too. And cleaning out my computer, dumping loads of bad photos that seemed good at the time. How many Harry the Heron photos do I have that look almost exactly the same? This is not one of them -- this is a keeper.

I cleaned up about 30 gig on my hard drive so I think I can take a lot more photos now! One of the things I did for Rick's book was make a series of photo collages to accompany some of the poems. Here's a sample.

Now I need to print them out!

Time was running out. I'm glad I'm good at working under deadline! And all was well!

Meanwhile, I hope you had a lovely Valentine's Day.

Whether you celebrated with your partner, your best friend, your secret-keeping cat or dog, remember -- it's all about the love.

And we all need a lot of that these days.

  1. I completely agree with the "Too Big". What a shame that people can't appreciate a lake cottage. I live very close to the shores of Lake Erie in Ohio. When our kids were young we could drive for miles and see the lake and the cottages. One by one they have been torn down and giant mega mansions have taken their place. And you can barely catch a glimpse of the lake.
These houses are not where summer memories are made. They are for parties to impress your friends or Airbnb rentals for strangers.

  2. Beautiful photos. ❤️ You look radiant.

  3. ...Jeanie, on the lakes around here places are being bought solely for the land and then they build a McMansion.

  4. Awww, that is so sad to see a big house where a cottage should be. Too bad the lake doesn’t have historical regulation based rules. Your Valentine books is a lovely idea.

  5. Yes we all need more love right now. There is way too much anger and hate in our country. Rick's getaway looks lovely. Maybe a little too snowy...grin. It sounds like your February has been good, but this winter is just not ending so I get why it feels long. I love the colors in your knitting. I'd make that a cowl because I'd love to wear those colors. And the puzzle looks fun too, and hopefully all the pinks are not too difficult. I hope the weather becomes spring quickly for both of us, and that you have a super week ahead. hugs-Erika

  6. Your knitting project is beautiful! All the cottages around our lake are being torn down and turned into year round houses/ most of them far too large for the lot sizes. I can't complain too much as we have a very large year round house here too but we built on a huge empty lot.

  7. You've put the winter hibernation to good use: straightening, organizing, catching up with projects, maintaining connections with friends -- all wonderful things to do! I love the knitting project, especially the brilliant colors you're using. Hope you're enjoying this lovely thaw and the opportunity to soak in some warmth and sunlight!

  8. I also agree with the "too" big thing. Lot's of snow at the cabin. Your gathering looks like a lot of fun. Glad the gentleman that was so sick has recovered. Love the knitting. Oh yeah that first photo IS a keeper. Wonderful family photos as well. Have a nice Sunday.

  9. I am looking for a regular house and I am feeling the "too big" all too often - either that or the "what the heck were they doing there". Loved your post - nice tradition

  10. It's more and more difficult to find a modest size house anywhere. Locally our town council had to impose regulations when people started buying modest homes in our little town then tearing them down and building huge places, nearly using the entire lot. It removed affordable houses permanently. And they're ugly in a street of nice little homes

  11. Do Americans also call it The Soo, or are you just adopting it for the post? Or is it just The Soo on the Canadian side?

  12. Goodness, that is a lot of snow at the lake.

... yes lets all do our bit to spread some love and kindness.

    All the best Jan

  13. I smiled all through this post. I love the collages!! Oh, and Harry the Herron!!! Happy Valentines!

  14. Rick's special place he visited is so pretty with all the snow. The forecast says we are supposed to have snow next week, we'll see. The cottage looks pretty with the snow as well, but I'm sure it's hard for you getting in and out. I'm with you on the big houses - it's the small cottages that I love. Wow, I wouln't even know where to start on that puzzle, looks complicated. Your knitting project is pretty with all the colors, and I like that LOVE pillow too. What a great photo of Harry. It's good to clear out our old pictures, especially if we aren't too fond of them. I've been doing the same thing. Those xoxoxo boxes are delightful. Yes, no matter how we spend Valentine's Day, it's all about the love. Have a fantastic week ahead, Jeanie.

  15. Your winter has been a rich collage of cozy retreats, small-town loyalties, resistance to outsized change, and the steady rituals

  16. Happy Valentine's Day! It sounds like you make the most of it!

  17. I like your little cabin - looks cozy and cute. I don't like when they put those big additions on either, blocks view of lake. Your knitting looks so pretty!

  18. Oh wow that is quite the renovation. You will have big houses on either side of you now! That is definitely the trend on my parents lake and most lakes in their region. There aren’t many ‘cottage’ type of dwellings left. My parents also did a tear down/rebuild but they built a home they now live in year round. But it’s a different vibe from a cabin with a slamming screen door and kids crammed onto couches/in bunk rooms.

Your Valentine’s Day book for Rick is always such a work of love! I love that you do that each year!

  19. The cottage with the snow looks gorgeous. I lived either in Romania or the UK, where homes are much smaller than in the US and it feels strange to see so much space for only a few people. As it's so cold, heating up a big place must be very costly too.
    The puzzle is lovely.

  20. I agree about your cottage at the lake, unless you have a huge family why do you need such a big house. I love the puzzle and all the collage images. Great sighting of Harry the Heron. The days and months seem long but they do seem to fly by. March 8 we change the clocks ahead, I am looking forward to Spring.
Take care, enjoy your day and the week ahead.

  21. We're not fans of living large either. And that huge house is definitely out of place in that location. I'm glad Rick found a perfect spot to ski! Bill used to make photo collages, often from old photos he'd scanned. As I recall, he gave each of his sisters one with old family photos. We used to print them on fabric and I'd make wall hangings out of them. As for the poetry, it doesn't matter if it's 'bad.' It isn't bad in Rick's eyes, I'm sure, written by you with love.

  22. I like your little cottage. I hope you develop a good relationship with your neighbors. Your Valentine’s Day gift to Rick was truly awesome. Very creative and fun. Take care and God bless!

  23. You are so very thoughtful! And what a nice reunion Jeanie..

  24. Amen to February being the LONGEST short month! Looks like you spent yours very well, though, Jeanie. I am finishing up taxes, so I suppose mine was well spent too. Taxes and shoveling snow. Ugh.
ps - I love wearing cowls. Keep going!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh yes, it's all about the love! And now I see why you don't live at the lake year round.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jeanie, the ski place that Rick found sounds and looks fabulous. I see why a move to the cottage would not be desirable in winter. How fun to get with those work friends and keep up with their lives after retirement. Fun post, Jeanie!

  27. I don't even know where to stars.. love the scarf.. love all the pictures. Glad Rick was able to find his little slice of heaven. We too spent the weekend skiing. It wasn't anywhere close to heaven but it was convenient.

    ReplyDelete
  28. YEP, that is a lot of snow. When my parents first bought the farmhouse cottage...and we went up in winter...no. 1 the walls were sweating when the heat was on...and then the mold in spring from doing that...at least if it is slowly climatized from winter...that doesn't seem to be a problem. Love all your photos...my family doesn't like if I post ANYTHING with them in it...so if you see a smiling face on my blog, I just snuck one in...! LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree with you about the cottage..That makes it and time spent there...special!! Glad Rick had a good ski time!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Jeanie it's nice that Rick had his ski fix and the location sounded lovely and no TV works for us as we never turn it on when we travel. Give us an internet connection and we are good to go. Your Valentine's Day gift is wonderful and nothing beats homemade and from the heart. Nice that you had a get together with your former WKAR friends. I agree with you on the small cottage vs. the monster house.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I've often wondered if you had heavy snow at the lake house. Well, in my southern state where half an inch will paralyze the town I'd say this was a blizzard! Not where you'd want to be in the winter. Lovely for the summer when all the cottages are buzzing with activity I'm sure. I love puzzles and I have a new one I need to pull out before spring and we are outside. Now that valentine's day is over February will seem very short indeed! Your gathering looks fun, so happy about your friend and his health. Enjoy your week. I'm sure Rick had a blast in the snow.......

    ReplyDelete
  32. So glad Rick could take the snowy adventure and also stop by the cabin too. I would be sad to see that big house going in there too. Love that you make the book of picture and poetry every year for Rick. What a loving gift. Harry the Heron photo is gorgeous. Worth framing! What a fun puzzle.

  33. Jeanie this was just what I needed today...beautiful thoughts and photos...I was feeling a bit under the weather and your post made me smile especially about your friends being able to attend your get-together when their health could have taken a turn for the worse the previous year. I agree about your reasoning about cottages. Lake houses should be cozy and yes, close quartered...after all that is what makes them a lake cottage. AND how challenging to write so many poems...I have not written in a while, but I used to write poems regularly. You did great girl....🥰. Blessings always

  34. This time we have one room and a tiny bathroom - and we get along well :-)
But your cottage is so beautiful!
The puzzle looks like fun! And I love your Valentine´s idea (we don´t celebrate on special dates, we celebrate when we feel like it).

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love your cottage! it's so lovely. And it does seem a shame if people around there make theirs so much bigger.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Your photo collages are very lovely. Great to have! And I can understand why you keep your lake cottage to summer only. That's too much snow! Good luck with all your projects.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oh my goodness. The thought of skiing sounds exciting yet scary. I would enjoy cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. We have a pair of snowshoes at the lake. Who knows, I may give them a try one year when we visit in the winter.
They are building huge houses at our lake, too. Not sure how I feel about it.
Love the idea of you writing a poem book for Rick. How sweet!
Hope you had a lovely Valentine’s Day!
Enjoy the rest of your week!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Those photo collages are wonderful. I know what you mean about having too many pictures of essentially the same thing. I cleared more than half of mine out recently to free up space on the computer too. I wonder if the people who are expanding intend to live there year round? Too bad, it does seem to be counter to the vibe of a lake cottage community.

  39. Color brightens up life... your knitting project looks great.
We've had lots of fresh snow; it looks wonderful outside... this is how I love winter.
    You took some lovely photos.
    Love, Viola

  40. Jeanie, your cottage is perfect. Lovely photos and a wonderful re-union. Winter is a good time to declutter and organize.

  41. It seems big is the going trend now. Every house along our river that comes up for sale now is either torn down to build a bigger one or added on to make it bigger. Love the heart pillow. Janice

  42. Your cottage is just perfect and I hope it's ok with all of that snow. I like your knitting project and it's so colorful. It would make a nice cowl. I hope you had a nice Valentine's Day and enjoy the week.

  43. I had too much trouble dealing with winter in greater Detroit area; I can't even visualize living at your cabin in the winter. Too much cold and snow for me!

    ReplyDelete
  44. You really have had a busy month - but all good things. The snow pics are beautiful. Glad Rick got to ski and you got to take care of your projects. That's a lovely Valentine that you make for Rick with poetry. I'm not a winter person and am glad to be in warm sunny Miami Florida and the beach right now.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't know why people feel the need to built big houses. I prefer the small and cozy ones. The lake sure does get lots of snow, don't miss that at all.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I absolutely loved that snow drooping down from the roof of the cottage. Maybe 'sliding down' is a better description. It always amazed me when I'd see that; it seemed impossible that the snow could just hang like that. As for Valentine's Day, Mother Nature provided one for me. My Christmas cactus, that hasn't bloomed since I was given it as a gift three years ago, is putting on buds. I can see at least a dozen, and it looks like it really is going to bloom. At least it's trying! Once the excitement is over, I promised it I would repot and feed the poor thing!

  47. I have puzzled about the seeming need for big houses. Ours is bigger now than when we had 5 boys living here! Of course, back then we were all on the go, so it never felt crowded. Now we luxuriate in all our space! And use it all too. But a big house, no thanks. Sometimes I think people who live in them just never go outside.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm glad Rick found a great ski place. I think lake cabins should be simple affairs not monstrously big houses. But maybe they will be living there full time. What a lovely idea to give Rick a poetry book created by you!

    ReplyDelete
  49. February really does drag its feet, doesn’t it?
Rick’s trip sounds wonderful, and I’m with you on keeping cottages cozy and small.
The puzzle looks fun but challenging with all those pink blossoms waiting to test your patience!
Love the colors in your knitting.

  50. You had a busy month as usual, it seems. Rick must be in a very good form doing all these sports. I don't think I would be able to go alpine skiing anymore. Although, Martin does it very well.
What a good idea to write poetry of year's event. Must be fun for Rick to read, and see the photos. All memories come back in this way.
I agree with you about a summer house. Why do people need so much space? The whole idea of a summer house is it to be a little bit primitive. My parents even had an out door toilet, or, as we say in Swedish "utedass". They sold it some years ago, so the new owners might have something else. At least a more modern out door toilet.
Enjoy the rest of February and onto March.

  52. That huge house does seem out of place with the lake and cottages. Maybe I'm just lazy, but I wouldn't want to be responsible for keeping something that big clean! I feel like I barely keep up with keeping our 900 square foot house clean! And, you're so right about being packed together being part of the experience some time. Our Thanksgivings are always packed, but I really don't think they would be quite as fun if we had a huge place to host them in.

I'm also ready for February to be over with. At this point, I'm just counting down for warmer/longer days, flowers, and sunshine.

  53. That puzzle would have me pulling at my already thin hair:) Your dishcloth/cowl is beautiful:) I love your cottage. A little piece of Utopia. Glad you had a lovely Valentines:)

  54. I love how you capture both the small joys and the little frustrations of life from the perfect ski getaway to the quirks of cottage living. Your mix of humor, warmth, and attention to everyday details makes your post feel so genuine.

  55. Heavy snow. Stay warm with a cup of tea or coffee.

    ReplyDelete
  56. That is indeed a big house! Is this also only for the summer or do these people intend to stay there year round? It seems huge just for the summer. "Big" indeed seems to be a thing nowadays.
Your photo collages turned out lovely, I'm sure Rick liked them a lot. Getting rid of some photos is a good thing to do - I regularly go through my photos and delete. It's amazing how much space you gain through that.

  57. February nearly got away from me without my posting about my 16th blogiversary, but I finally managed it this morning. It's been a while! I so agree with you about "big." Especially at the lake. It's like when someone moves into a neighborhood in town of cozy homes and then starts an "addition" that is larger than the original house! Have they no sense of what is appropriate?!

    ReplyDelete
  58. It sounds like you and Rick are having a wonderful February. I agree with you that your neighbour's house is really too big for the lake. I wonder, do they live at the lake year round?

  59. Hi My name is Mona. I just want to share my experience with the world on how I got my love back and saved my marriage… I was married for 7 years with 4 kids and we lived happily until things started getting ugly and we had fights and arguments almost every time… it got worse at a point that he filed for divorce… I tried my best to make him change his mind & stay with me cause I loved him with all my heart and didn’t want to lose him but everything just didn’t work out… he moved out of the house and still went ahead to file for divorce… I pleaded and tried everything but still nothing worked. The breakthrough came when someone introduced me to this wonderful, great spell caster Dr Zuma, who eventually helped me out… I have never been a fan of things like this but just decided to try reluctantly cause I was desperate and left with no choice… He did special prayers and cast a love spell on him. Within 24hours he called me and was sorry for all the emotional trauma he had cost me, he moved back to the house and we continue to live happily, the kids are happy too and we are expecting our fourth child… I have introduced him to a lot of couples with relationship problems across the world and they have had good news… Just thought I should share my experience cause I strongly believe someone out there needs it… You can contact him on spiritualherbalisthealing@gmail.com

  60. Jeanie, LOVE your collages and the fact you "on purpose" create bad poetry... Too funny! Glad that Rick got to go skiing! I wish we could ski around here. Several years ago we had a pretty good snowfall and I was wishing for a pair of 170s and boots. I'd still get out there even if I broke my sacrum again, lol! Actually, I think I'd like some cross-country skiis to try just wandering around the streets. A little more low-key so I don't break anything. ;) Happy to feature your Valentine's post at SYS #488 this evening for you. <3

Thinking warm thoughts for you all,
    Barb :)
