At Home: Easter Fun

It finally feels as though spring has arrived here in Michigan. That doesn't mean it won't be cold, but not as cold or gloomy as it has been. Always a plus! I think celebrating a late Easter adds to the spring feeling. More sunshine. More flowers. More merriment.

Definitely more merriment.

I've written about our Good Friday tradition here before. For at least twenty years, and probably longer, we gather with our friends Mark and Jan to have dinner and then color eggs. After, we watch Monty Python's "Life of Brian."

It's always a jolly event with lots of puns about our eggcellent work, our eggstaordinary results and our eggstremely fun time.

On this Good Friday, the 250th anniversary of the battle of Lexington and Concord that kicked off the Revolutionary War, we celebrated American silversmith Paul Revere. It was Revere who rang the bells and rode off to Lexington to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams that "the British are coming!" This year, at 6 p.m., many churches were ringing their bells in commemoration -- so we brought our own bells and rang them loudly from the deck for one minute. Our own warning about freedom!

Then it was on to a delicious dinner and the egg coloring! We ended up with quite the array. Rick and I always color our eggs raw so I get a big smile for days after when I go to make scrambled eggs!

Our Easter celebration with the kids was on Saturday. Rick and Kevin spent a good deal of that time working on Rick's bathroom remodel and getting up the beadboard walls.

Sometimes they had an assistant.

Molly, the kids and I played a few games.

Cam got his mom to take a selfie!

And finally, we had to be outside, so it was a walk to the Ditch. The boys enjoyed climbing on the giant rocks.

(Cam never met a rock he didn't want to pose on!)

And we had to do Pooh Sticks on the bridge!

We avoided Father Goose and steered clear of the nest where I had my encounter a few days before. But we saw lots of ducks and also spotted a muskrat, digging to pull out something from the ground that he tucked in his mouth and swam back, probably to build his nest. Cam called him Elon.

Once the bathroom team could take a break, we headed back to my house for dinner. It was pretty traditional -- ham, deviled eggs, salad, haricot vert, with brownies for dessert. Some of the things we usually do -- scalloped potatoes, asparagus -- we scrapped this year.

And then, the egg hunt!

This year I hid the eggs better! I think they found them all.

Then came the opening of the eggs! One year we had a bit of an accident (I'd stuffed the eggs with chocolate and put them out in the morning -- then it got warm and you can guess what happened to the chocolate.) So this time it was Tootsie Rolls, Jolly Ranchers and coins.

Cam pulled in a little over $11, and Carson a little over $12. That's a lot of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters! I don't know that they'll ever be satisfied with just candy again!

A happy afternoon, surrounded by people we loved!

And on Sunday? We rested!

  1. What a fun holiday Jean! I love your Good Friday tradition. And the fact you've been doing that for so many years. And I really laughed at the photos of Cam on the rock. You can get a whole photo book of Cam on rock photos which would be wonderful when he's all grown up. And yes, I think spring has finally arrived at my house too. It's great, isn't it? hugs-Erika

  5. Great to have so much fun with the kids at Easter. We picked some pale yellow daffodils and some tulips and sprays of forsythia from the yard to decorate indoors. Glad for the sunshine. Happy spring!

  6. You celebrate the day well. we don’t and didn’t really, even the religious part was meaningful to us.

I love that patch of spring bulbs in the first photo. Yours, I presume?

I had to zoom in to see if that little tyke was playing chess. No, but the concentration was significant.

  8. Hello Jeanie :)
Really lovely family photos. The boys were having such fun, and are very photogenic, they have great smiles just like you. The flowers are beautiful. I picked some from the garden to decorate the house and table- We also have the tradition of egg dying here in Portugal, but I didn't do it this year.
    All the best
    Sonjia.

Our grands love the candy-filled eggs, but they get really excited when they find an egg with a dollar bill! Wishing you a wonderful week!

  15. That sounds like a wonderful celebration! My boys wanted money too once we started putting some in their eggs-- not that they didn't want any candy (we once had an egg or two that some animal ate through and stole the candy out of!) but we never did have any chocolates melt.

  31. Your Easter weekend sounds like lots of fun, except maybe the bathroom work. I like your idea of coloring raw eggs. It indeed would bring a smile each time you use some. And your meal together sounds yummy too.

  37. I love how you mix traditions with a bit of humor, like all the egg puns—definitely eggstraordinary! The part about commemorating Paul Revere and ringing your own bells is such a unique and meaningful touch. Also, how cute is Cam posing on rocks and naming the muskrat "Elon"? Sounds like a wonderful mix of family time, creativity, and good food. I bet the kids will never forget that egg hunt with the coins inside

  40. OK. I've tried and tried to figure out what 'Pooh sticks on the bridge" could be, and failed. I didn't come up with a couple of interpretations, but then thought, "Oh, surely not THAT!" It looks like a wonderful celebration all the way through. In your first photo, the purple and yellow flowers suited one another perfectly. When I got plastic eggs, I always like to mix-and-match them, and I often would pair a yellow egg half with a purple.

  41. Great party! Sounds like a good menu. I love the eggs and the concept of cracking them to scramble eggs.

  49. What a lovely post Jeanie, full of fun and love. The eggs look gorgeous, beautiful colours. I've read your previous post, I'm glad you didn't get involved with father goose, they can get very aggresive when protecting their wives! We have one nesting at a local park, and even though it's on an island on the lake daddy goose swims around keeping watch.

  50. We also colored eggs at home only hard boiled for us. The process shared by you and your friends seemed much more intricate with some lovely results. The boys are growing up and soon egg hunts may be in the past, so good they still enjoy them.

  59. The boys got money in their eggs at their grandma's, too! That was definitely one of the highlights for them but their favorite treasure was a little carrot car with a bunny in it. They have played with them SO MUCH (and fought over them, of course). It looks like you had a wonderful Easter!!
