Back in "the day," the great and the good hosted salons in their homes. These were occasions that were either musical or literary and might include performance or discussion. (I suppose, in a way our contemporary book clubs are a salon of a sort.) They have existed since the first salon in Italy in the 16th century. Some of the greatest works of Faure, Poulenc, Debussy and Ravel got their start in the salon.

Over the past year or so, Rick has brought that tradition to his home with house concerts by classical musicians. His first was with guitarist Onur Alkavuklar, and it was Onur who suggested Rick ask harpist Belle Coty to perform. I'm glad he did.
Belle is a young woman who has known her mind since she was a child and when watching a harpist with her grandmother, heard the older woman say something like, "I'd love to hear you play the harp." From that time on, she was interested and when she turned eleven, her parents presented her with her first harp. She's been playing ever since.
About forty-five people packed themselves into Rick's living room to hear Belle on a frigid, snowy afternoon in January. It was a welcome respite from worry about the California fires and the political situation. For a short time, our thoughts were transported to a more celestial plane.
After the concert we mingled, guests chatting with Belle and enjoying an array of wine and refreshments. I'd been baking and punch making, Rick had a fresh batch of baguettes and cheese, and several guests added to the table with wonderful treats. The atmosphere could not have been warmer, despite the weather.
I can't stress enough how lovely it is to hear live music within one's own home, enjoying it in the company of others. Perhaps it's because we don't often do such things. Or maybe it's just nice.

My video technique is terrible and I have yet to begin to understand the program on my computer. (My windows 10 version was so much better!). The backlighting and my position in the room didn't make for a grand visual experience. But it doesn't affect the music one bit.
I hope you enjoy.
NOTE -- An Invitation: Rick is hosting another house concert on Sunday, April 27 -- a classical guitar duo. If you are in the mid-Michigan area (Lansing) and are interested in being notified when he opens reservations, please make sure I have your email address in the comments. The concerts are free, but it's in his living room, so we are limited to about 45 people.

I love that you host these concerts. I wish I could attend!
ReplyDeleteYou make me sound like a hero. Anybody can do it π! In the end, nobody enjoys it more than me.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of a concert in a small intimate space. I laugh when I try to figure out how small it would be here in the condo. Way small!
ReplyDeleteWow! House concerts are great π π
ReplyDeleteThat's the point of chamber music. It wasn't designed for huge bombastic orchestras. Can you tell which I prefer??
ReplyDeleteThe harp is such a beautiful instrument. I love how Rick is doing these concerts. It must be great to be with a small group and get to hear music. He's a clever guy to do this, and I wish I would be around to attend a concert. Thanks for sharing Jeanie. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteYou remind me that I attended two different house fiddle concerts about 15 or so years ago. And that reminds me of participating, or trying to participate, in a few fiddle jam sessions.
ReplyDeleteThe harp music sounds delightful. Looks like a great event at Ricks. Take care, have a happy day!
ReplyDeleteIt's an absolutely marvelous continuation of a time-honoured tradition. If I lived close by I would be there very time. Congratulations to Rick on this fine initiative.
ReplyDelete...what a musical treat!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful music!
ReplyDeleteThe lovely gathering warms the heart.
Jeanie, I love the beautiful sounds of the harp, it is ethereal and she is fabulous. I wish I could attend one of Rick’s concerts in his home. When I hosted my parents’ 50th anniversary right after Christmas, 2002 (they married on Christmas Eve) for a crowd of over 200 in a lovely local hall, I hired a beautiful lady harpist. I had 30 live trees that were lit and the afternoon was magical. Music has been my passion since I was a little girl listening to the Big Band music that my Daddy loved. I am sorry I have gone on and on, but seeing your post brought back wonderful memories! Please share with Rich how much I appreciate his love for music and how brilliant of him that he offers it to others.
ReplyDeleteHow lovely, what a wonderful time to spend with music and friends

Oh, that was just beautiful!! I do so love harp music. She's a very talented young woman. This is so wonderful that you are bringing back this very old tradition. Kudos!! Exactly what the world needs right now. I was waiting for this video and it didn't disappoint. Thanks so much for sharing bits of these private salon concerts with us. Wow! :)
ReplyDeletewhat a wonderful idea for all involved!! i am sure the musicians really enjoy performing to a smaller crowd. i read ricks comment, you had a great idea rick, and followed through with it. bringing joy to so many people....that is a hero in my eyes!!
ReplyDeleteI love how you and Rick support each other and your mutual and individual interests.
ReplyDeleteSuch a great idea and a musical feast for those who love to listen to beautiful music.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful instrument. Thanks for sharing the clip. It's calming and soothing to hear. That harp looks huge! About worrying about the Calif. fires..... I live in the state, and my daughters live close to where they're actually blazing. Tell me about worry. ; )

This is such a wonderful experience to listen to this instrument.
ReplyDeleteWow! That is so gorgeous!! There was a harpist at our church in December. It was the Sunday when I had the boys in church with me as I did not realize there was no Sunday school that day. It was pretty cool for them to see and listen to it.
ReplyDeleteI love that you guys host these little concerts! What a treat for all!! We all need some beauty to focus on to distract us a bit from the other stuff that brings us down...
That was absolutely beautiful. The harp has always seemed so complicated to me. I loved being able to hear the music. Thank you for posting this.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the video, thank you.
ReplyDeleteSuch a wonderful idea to host these concerts.
All the best Jan
This is such a beautiful event and tradition that Rick is having at his house. And Belle Coty plays beautifully - I'm glad that you shared this video, Jeanie. If I lived closer I would want to try to get on Rick's invitation list!
ReplyDeleteOh, this is just so wonderful!! There's such a sense of bountifulness when live music is involved... I find the harp so lovely--everything about it is an aesthetic experience. How very lucky for your guests. I would love to attend in April, if there are still openings. pocobrat at gmail will reach me.
ReplyDeleteWhat a treat!!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely that Rick is hosting performances.
ReplyDeleteThat harp is huge. How does she haul it around?
This - literally - sounds like a wonderful evening! I expected the harp sounding different, though! Would I love a warm atmosphere and good food right now...
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have a concert in your own home...or rather Rick's home. Yes, listening to the harp does bring you back to a time of sophistication by the upper class. One of our neighbors always had us over yearly for his bagpipe concert. It was always held outside in the Fall around a campfire with good food and other neighbors and friends. We enjoyed it, but alas he passed away, so there will only be our memories now. Janice
ReplyDeleteThe music has such an ethereal feeling, just beautiful. How wonderful to have a private concert!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful thing to host. And I can imagine in your own home..like minded people and that sound:)Belle is wonderful.Do you follow Gail at Painting the Hamptons..she is a talented harpist also..And our Nora the artist..her sister.Just fab Jeanie!
ReplyDeletewe had a friend who hosted many small musical groups in her home, and it was beautiful. What a great thing Rick is doing!

When I lived in Liberia, there was a group of recorder players who'd gather to make music (for a very small audience, believe me!) and of course there's porch music here in Texas. Whether in a home or on a porch, and whether it's a harp or a guitar providing the music, it's wonderful! (Now I'm wondering if there's any connection between the harp as an instrument and the Harpies. Etymological and other research is required!)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Michel’s in Hawaii featured a harpist at its Sunday brunches. Lovely ambiance.
ReplyDeletehow nice it would be to host something like that, my problem is that having a lot of folks around in my house overwhelms me. But I can go other places and enjoy.
ReplyDeleteJeanie, such a grand idea hosting a concert in Rick’s home. I am sure everyone enjoyed the concert.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely concept, a salon. I have always been fascinated by them. Oh if I were closer I would be asking for an invite. Sitting there with lovely music just whisks you away to another dimension, an escape for awhile. How wonderful!
ReplyDeleteA wonderful event!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely! What special and enjoyable times!

Oh, Jeannie - what I would give to live closer so that I could book my seat every time Rick has an in-house concert! What beautiful music. I played bassoon, oboe and 1st chair clarinet for all my years in school, and in community band in Florida, but I haven't played now in 24 years, once I moved here to SW GA. And to be able to see you too! And I would have, of course, moved my Mike right along with me anywhere I moved to! At one time I was contemplating a move to Savannah, after my sister & her family & my Mom moved there in 2018 after my father passed away. I had opportunity to move there in 2000 but passed up the job offer (dumb decision, by the way). Anyhoo, being up there and being able to hear this beautiful music would be such a comfort and blessing to me. My father was a musician ; he played coronet, bugle (he did military services in FL after his retirement) and french horn, and he continued with community bands / orchestras until he was 88 years old in FL. Have a great weekend!!! Dawn Pinnataro Albany, GA
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful thing to host at home! Did you know that, amongst other things, the harp is the national musical instrument of Wales? It is as synonymous with Wales as our male voice choirs and Eisteddfodau.
ReplyDeleteLovely..a treat for sure
ReplyDeleteOhhhh this is spectacular. What a wonderful social gathering and so much fun. Hmmm my birthday is April 27 so I will be looking forward to watching the video. Thank you for sharing with FFO.
ReplyDeleteWhat extraordinarily talented performer -- and a great treat to hear! Thanks for sharing. Also, I would love to hear about further house concerts. Just saying...
ReplyDeleteI love the concept of house concerts though I've never actually been to one or hosted one. I don't hear of too many where I live but I know they exist. Thanks for sharing the concert with us. It sounds like a lovely bit of music and fellowship.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great event it is! All of them enjoyed sounds from the heaven in a snowy day.
ReplyDeleteI have always been in awe listening to the harp being played. What a fabulous evening and great idea.
ReplyDeleteI'm popping over from Polly's blog because I saw you mention this concert in the comments. How lovely! I enjoyed listening to the music so much!
ReplyDeleteI used to be a musician and back in the day, music at home is lovely to hear. I agree!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat calming and gorgeous music, Jeanie. Thanks for sharing! ❤️
ReplyDeleteOh Jeannie! This is SO beautiful! I could absolutely dance to this, it makes my heart happy. Thank you for sharing. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful event Jeanie, the music is beautiful. I would love to attend and meet you and Rick, sadly I don't think I will win the lotteryπ
ReplyDeleteSounds magical.
ReplyDeleteWhat joy! It sounds like a perfect event. I held a few house concerts here at my home, and it was fun but living so far out made it hard to get people to come. We did have decent turnout though, considering.
ReplyDeleteWish I lived closer!
Absolutely wonderful.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. What a treat for everyone.
