So, what is life like at the lake in the summer? In a word, wonderful.
There are too many adjectives from which to choose -- fun, relaxing, delicious, joyful, mesmerizing, calming. Life at the lake comes with its own soundtrack, one that combines the sound of waves on the water or wind through the pines, with the mellow sounds of classical guitar and the sounds of birds, both in the water and in the trees. There is definitely an abundance of critters.
We have typical days -- and no typical day. We move to the rhythm of the weather. Sometimes those rhythms involve a kayak ride for Rick.
His companions on the water are flocks of Canada geese. One day I counted 50 of them in a flotilla along the lake.
Some are clearly older (and larger) than their traveling companions.
I'm never thrilled when they come ashore. Anyone who knows geese know that they are not the tidiest of birds!
So, when they hit our beach, I open the door, take a few steps out and clap my hands. They move on -- often next door.
I never chase away the ducks. We seem to have two families of Duckles and Quackles again this year and they often travel together.
My Merlin app tells me there are many birds. But about the only ones I see (and hear) with any regularity are the crows, who either hang out on the beach or go high in the trees.
Then there is this one. When she's not sleeping, she'll come to the porch, stretch out in the afternoon sun puddle or watch scurrying squirrels dash about.
If I'm not on a walk (or checking out the rest of the world on my computer) you can either find me curled up with a book or right here.
And why? Because practice makes less imperfect. (Perfection is not even a goal!)
I'll water the herbs and geraniums growing in pots outside. And this year, a surprise. A struggling hydrangea we planted six or seven years ago that never bloomed decided to smile at us!
There are only three blooms, but they're nice ones!
Is there a best time of day? Mornings, when the lake is still? The warmth of midday? Those hours when you walk in the shade of the trees or cavort on the water in the heat of the sun? Perhaps. But the times that are the most beautiful are those when the sun leaves the sky.
The water is still, the wind has calmed, the birds have quieted.
And we savor the beauty of color -- sometimes oranges and golds and other times, like these, deep pinks, purples and violets.
Now, that is perfect.

And, to answer a quick question asked in a comment -- Will I consider answering questions asked by commenters? As most of you know, I reply to comments in direct email an email is attached to your comment. If no email is attached, but you have a blog, I will visit your blog to either thank you and/or respond (or just visit!). I tend to avoid conflict. I know not everyone agrees with me on issues or I with them and I will probably not get into an argument with you. If a comment is made respectfully, I will post it, even if I don't agree with what the commenter says. If it is obviously spam or uncivil, I may not post it and I certainly won't reply.
So, if you have a question, please post it in the comments and if you are connected to a blog or email, I will be happy to answer if I can. If not, and it pertains to something I can answer in a future post, I may well do that! (And I hope the person who asked that sees this because they came in as anonymous with no contact info so I can't reply directly!)

The photos a stunning. Thank you for letting have a glimpse into lake life.
ReplyDelete...Jeanie, what a fabulous post. I need to always remember your quote, "practice makes less imperfect." Keep practicing and have a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteYou have such a great getaway spot Jeanie. Boy those sky colors are amazing. It's good to be by the water, isn't it? We see those big geese flotillas out on the ocean too. Not on my MIL's lake though. I really like the Merlin app too. I'm not horrible at ID is I can see a bird, but bird songs are tough. By the way, did your basement end up staying dry? Enjoy the water (but not if it's in your basement). hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed perfect
ReplyDeleteIt does sound and look like perfection ❤️
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos from the lake. Love the ducks, geese and the beautiful sunset. I always enjoy seeing your art, well done! Take care, have a great day and a happy weekend.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I need: A nice vacation at the lake. Your post today captured the relaxed environment so beautifully.
ReplyDeletesuch a blessing to have your time at the lake. A beautiful peaceful get -a -way haven for you and Rick. Enjoy.
ReplyDeletesummer happens and Jeanie is at the lake- All is right and well. I relax when you are there, watercolors on the table, cat in the sunshine and , man in a boat. Ideal! Thank you sor this lovely post. I feel so much better having visited your world.
ReplyDeleteI can imagine ho lovely it is at your lake. Looking at water is very therapeutc. A few minutes watching the stream or the Rhine do me good. As do the ancient buildings everywhere. But sometimes I would still like to get away for a few days! Have a great weekend, hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteThe sunset is amazing! I love the pinks. I would love to spend time in a place like that.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful skies you get at the lake! If you painted one that pink no one would believe you weren't taking artistic license on the intensity of it.
ReplyDeleteLake life is a good life.
ReplyDeleteThe colourful sky and lake are absolutely beautiful. Enjoy your weekend.
ReplyDeleteLOL! I'd be clapping at the geese, too!
ReplyDeleteI spent a couple of lake cabin vacations in Minnesota years ago and I still remember them fondly. Your post made them come alive again for me. Lake time is different and just lovely. :)
I loved my family's cabin and miss those days at Shellcamp Lake, Gilmanton, NH ! Sunsets across Shellcamp Lake, winter walks with a winter wonderland, ice skating on the lake (I will never forget my father skating with my sister and I in 1969 [we had gone there for Xmas that year, from Ohio] and lots of other wonderful, terrific memories. I live these memories thru you and your lake cabin !!!
ReplyDeleteDawn P. Albany, GA
so lovely. You have such a wonderful relaxing space. Our geese are gone for the summer, so maybe some of them have headed your way. Once the babies are big enough to fly and keep up, they "vacation" and migrate for a while. The sunset colors are just amazing!
ReplyDeleteYou have the most beautiful sunsets! Sunrises are the most pretty at my parents. They must be on a different ordinal side of the lake from you. They are on the south side of their lake and that seems to be prime for sunrises. I am usually not up to see the sunrises but I did see an absolutely gorgeous one that I still think about when Paul was just a couple of months old.
ReplyDeleteLake time is the best kind of time. I like that I can completely lose track of what time of day it is. The boys are so entertained with the water and sand so the living is easy!
You paint a great picture, in several ways 😊
ReplyDeleteI have never heard the term "sun puddle" before, but I think I love it.
And yes, before sunrise and after sunset are often the very best light.
You can tell that it is your happy place. Canada geese aren’t loved in many settings. Did you know they are an incredible messy, vicious nuisance in many of our university campuses? Enjoy your painting and lake views! - Jenn
ReplyDeleteThe purple light at the lake is so gorgeous. Practice makes it less imperfect - so true!
ReplyDeleteWill you consider answering questions that are asked by your commenters?
ReplyDeleteYour summer life at the lake certainly looks wonderful. How nice to see the blooming hydrangea! I have to smile seeing this post.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful ! Love that hudrangea too - looks like a lace cap, which I find so dainty.
ReplyDeleteHere in Michigan we are not far from many lakes and water and I so love sitting outside in the mornings and watch the birds go by. With the state land near by and our river we have plenty to see. Your sky was so beautiful! Me dont like when geese come around either. They are messy for sure and can be mean. Just like swans.Janice
ReplyDeleteOh, this was good to read and see. Your photos, as always, are as descriptive as your words. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteA thought on the hydrangea...I too have a hydrangea planted 3 years ago. ("Limelight") and it never bloomed. BECAUSE THE DEER ATE THE TIPS OF THE BUSH where the flowerheads would form. (Insert epithet here.) The deer missed one this year and I have, at the bottom of the bush, partially protected by rosemary, one light green flower.
Here in SW Virginia, extreme drought persists. No real rain since Memorial Day. The Roanoke River is so low, I could walk across it in places. Kayaks are grounded. So your pix of the lake look especially lovely.
XOXOXO
Your words describing your time at the lake are just as beautiful as the pictures. It conjures up images and peaceful summer days. How I would love that. I love everything about your time at the lake. And music from Rick's guitar would be the icing on the cake.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, beautiful post. One of the things I loved and still do-are the views of the lake early mornings where we see the sunrises= which are different every day In the woods there were so many trees that we did not see the sun or the moon. I love the full moons over the lake too.
ReplyDeleteI love the ducks here too, we the canada geese but not in that large of a group-that's a lot for sure.
When I first started blogging over 20 years ago when we retired most everyone had their email attached-which was a better way to communicate for a reply in my opinion. Now most do not do that and never understood why. I have a few friends that have yahoo emails and those don't let me contact back for some reason-so I started now for most friends replying back under their comments-thinking most do not return to see it but I still do it.
sorry for the long reply more rain here today
You are amazing at responding to each and every comment.Oh I would love to have a kayak at my door.Your words describing lake life are poetry.I think we would all love a lake house:). Your palette suits the porch!
ReplyDeleteOh, what a wonderful story you weave of your life; and you share it with all of us. Summer in full swing at the lake and you and Rick add to the richness of your life there. keep cool; keep the love and joy flowing Jeanie. big hugs to you.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping that you will share some of your (maybe imperfect) water colors with us. All your photos are wonderful. I hope your enjoyable summer keeps on going.
ReplyDeletebest, mae at maefood.blogspot.com
Your lake is so wonderful!
ReplyDeleteAnd Lizzie... awww...
I need to find the spirit to go back to sketching, too!
Wonderful lake-pics, thank you!!
I am astonished how blogger works! I needed to give my gmail-address but luckily you always end up at my gmx-account!
Reckon you have saved that one...
Lake life agrees with you. How fun to watch Mother Nature at work. The scenery is lovely. I always enjoy a beautiful sunset.
ReplyDeleteThose sunsets are incredible! Where our house sits we don't get to see sunsets on the lake. And while I will the ducks alone I try to chase the geese off our yard too because they really are so messy (and so mean!). But our property has multiple entry points from the water so even as I chase them off the beach side they find another path to go up and we often find them in either side yard.
ReplyDeleteLooks perfect to me. I could do without the geese….
ReplyDeleteIt seems as though you just left the lake. My how time flies.
That looks like a lace cap hydrangea. Mine gets too much shade. Looks kind of like yours.
Beautiful sunset. Everything so still and peaceful.
Enjoy your weekend, Jeanie
what an enjoyable post!! i too live on the water, a river and the view is incredible, i should share it more often!!
ReplyDeleteyou hydrabgea is a lace hydrangea and it is so pretty. planted in the right spot it should do very well and get quite big!! i LOVE that quote and i am going to write it down in my book of joyous quotes. i envision lots of painting, and lots & lots of pretty sunrises and sunsets!! the last picture is spectacular!!
Oh Jeanie, how I love your lake posts. They are filled with so much beauty and calmness and good things. I don't know where to start, as I liked so many things on here today. Well, I'll start with that dazzling sunset in PINKS AND PURPLES! Oh my, that's amazing. To see that many geese at one time would be so interesting. I wasn't aware that they make a mess on the shore. Rick must have so much pleasure when he goes kayaking. And how sweet to hear the sound of his guitar playing in the distance. Love that photo of him through the window, by the way. You have your art table all set up to create wonderful things. About the commenting.....I always go back to the person who comments and answer their question on their blog or through e-mail. And I think you do that as well, which is so nice. Some answer questions on their own post, which I simply don't understand that. But we all do what suits us here in blogland. And I just loved your post today, Jeanie. Thanks for sharing your lake life with us. : )
ReplyDelete~Sheri
This post brings back good memories! I miss my lake. I did enjoy yours.
ReplyDeleteYour sunsets are quite spectacular. A nice way to end each day at the lake.
ReplyDeleteJeanie, your words and images paint a beautiful picture of lake life. Geese have become a big problem to many around our city. Thirty years ago, we never saw geese, but when they moved down south they brought all of their relatives! Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteSo many adjectives, so many incredible pictures, but it is that last one of the sunset that is my favorite!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos of the lake at sunset! Geese certainly are messy, but look so graceful floating at your place. Such a happy place you have there! Full of beauty to cherish.
ReplyDeleteAh, nothing like summer. It has a special atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteJeanie, this was a wonderful description in words and photos of the time you and Rick share at your lake home. We too would clap at the geese along the river, but never the ducks😀The sunset colors were amazing and even if you see them one day, it’s always a wonder to experience the next one, which may be even more spectacular (or not). I appreciate that you reply to comments via a personal email. I will reply to a blogger’s question in a comment on their blog or sometimes via email. The reason I do not reply in my comments area is that I’m not sure how many return to read a reply.
ReplyDeleteThose sunset colors are just surreal, gorgeous! I totally agree about the geese, they can leave their calling cards all over the place. Cute duck families! Little ones are so adorable.
ReplyDeleteYour sunset photos are gorgeous! I totally agree about the geese, LOL. We had them at a previous home and they left their calling cards all over our lawn and driveway. Your duck families are so sweet, the little ones are so adorable. Have a great summer at the lake house.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous sunset captures Jeanie! So glad you're thoroughly enjoying lake life!
ReplyDeleteJenna
That sounds like a wonderful escape, and it's great to have a place you know well and can return to over and over again.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, Jeanie, this is such a lovely post and I love seeing what you are doing at the lake. I appreciate you answering questions I may have had in my e-mail. I try to answer questions in the comment section and an e-mail if one is available. I figure I cover all bases. I can be quite late at times and even sometimes forget, so it's not an opinion if someone doesn't get a reply, it's either time or just plain forgetfulness. I always hope blogging friends understand, and are always welcome to give me a little push in the reminder area :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice relaxing day paddling on the lake!! I love it. And you have been painting in the suniight with your fur babe rolling around. Nice...
ReplyDeleteLife at the lake sounds truly wonderful and like a real summer get-away. Reading or painting is simply perfect. I like your art journal (?) in the photo, it looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI don't always reply to comments, but if there's a question I can answer and an email is attached I certainly do reply. Thankfully so far I've never received a disrespectful comment; however, every now and then I receive a "nice blog" comment where I am sure this is just so that I go back and visit them. I admit, I don't in this case.
Jeanie, your lake photos are stunning!
ReplyDeleteThe ducks, geese, and that breathtaking sunset are so captivating.
Your artistic eye shines through beautifully.
Wishing you a wonderful day and a happy week ahead. Take care and thank you so much for praying for me. I do hope my selfish neighbours will move out soon.
You are so lucky to have a cabin by the lake, what a beautiful setting Jeanie.
ReplyDeleteCute photo of Lizzie :)
The sunsets are fantastic!
You know, I've never spent time like this at a lake. We did go to Minnesota lakes for vacation when I was a kid, but I just never responded to them like I do to the ocean. Have you ever read Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh? It's ocean-based, but thinking about it now, I think her ruminations would apply equally to your lake life. I'm sure you'd like it!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like idyllic days.
ReplyDeleteJeanie, I love your stunning sunset pictures! Just glorious!
ReplyDeleteYour posts are enjoyable. I especially like seeing your painting nook and seeing what you are painting.
I'm currently on vacation at the beach with my family and my daughter has been painting also.
Enjoy your week.
WOW!
ReplyDeleteThat last photograph is PERFECT!
All the best Jan
