December at the Ditch -- and Beyond

To be honest, this year there is little difference between December at the Ditch and November at the Ditch. Even the holiday ornaments that sprang up there a few years ago haven't yet appeared. I suspect everyone is as behind schedule as I am.

On the 14th -- a Thursday -- we told the kids we would seen them in a "couple of weeks from tomorrow." The next day I looked at the calendar and realized we would see them only ONE WEEK from that day (the 22nd). In between that, there was insulation installation, a wedding I didn't know we were going to until a couple of days before that, cards to make, cards to send and not a speck of baking done.

But that Friday was beautiful and after a grocery marketing trip with a friend, I knew I had to do a walk to the ditch. Who knows when the weather would be that good -- 50 degrees, little wind and sunny! And, surprisingly, I was rewarded for my efforts!

Harry, who usually isn't seen past November, was still in residence! And, he was looking mighty fine!

He moved from one end of the pond to another -- I love to see him in flight, though I wasn't expecting it!

There was little bird action, apart from Harry. I saw a couple of ducks huddled on the bank. But this little fellow was having quite the time of it.

I think he was looking for his hidden stash of nuts! I hope he was successful!

In other news, we finally got Rick's "forest" decorated. Beginning Covid year when we couldn't find a tree lot to save our souls, I passed on some of my smaller trees his way. (Don't tell -- step one toward purging the basement.) They looked beautiful with so many ornaments!

So many, in fact, we made our own little holiday village underneath, where Santa, angels, snowmen, bicycles and pokemon characters comingle in holiday joy!

The fellows doing insulation on the house came and worked in the attic and basement all day. When they left, you'd never know they'd been there -- perfect clean-up!

I've been so swamped that I've hardly pulled out any of my own Christmas CDs and have listened more than I wish to youtube. If you need a couple of hours of non-stop music and enjoy Michael Buble, I recommend this one.

I finally finished Christmas cards, including making a very few. I felt like I was speed painting and I don't particularly enjoy that -- it's more like production work than creativity. Last year I did an Este MacLeod online class and painting watercolor ornament rounds for our "wreath" was part of it. I made far more than the project called for so I used the leftovers on the cards. Not fancy but done.

And I was finally able to start baking. So far I've done Diana's Peanut Butter Fudge (highly recommended!), Marie's Lemon-Ginger bars (also highly recommended) and Ina Garten's raspberry bars, along with Anno's Peppered nuts. (Her recipe isn't online but I'm sure if you ask nicely, she'd share! They are the BEST!) I also did my fabulous shortbread cookies and topped them with a lemon glaze. I'd still like to get a molasses or ginger cookie in there and the mandatory cut-outs that we'll decorate with the kids on Christmas weekend.  I know I'll be missing a few of my other favorites this year but there just isn't time.

I also made some frozen sugared cranberries for garnish or snacks. (Heat fresh cranberries in a simple syrup of equal parts of sugar and liquid made of lemon juice and water and add about one inch of sliced stem ginger. Just before they pop (or right after, quickly!) roll in sugar, put on waxed paper and freeze. Then pack later in a container to keep frozen. Use the syrup for fruit salad or in a drink. AWESOME!)

Rick and I took dinner to our Cork Popper friend Barb, whose husband Mike is still in rehab for his stroke. I did a pasta sauce with artichokes, kalamata, mushrooms and such and took some pasta with it, along with fruit salad and dessert. Rick brought two baguettes. It was good to get a progress report -- they hope to have him home for Christmas. Keep the good vibes going!

As we drove out we were dashing through the snow, as we had an unexpected snowfall. It was a wet snow and stuck to the trees -- they looked like Narnia or a scene from "The Snow Queen."

Then this happened.

You don't want to see this message on your phone. It will require a factory reset (I learned after spending an hour with online chat to my provider) but first (in my spare time) I need to make sure I have a complete list of my contacts -- which are extensive. Meanwhile, I'm holding my breath that it makes it through Christmas. I feel somewhat relieved in that I never do banking or buy things on my phone, so credit info should (emphasis "should") be safe.

At Christmas Central I finally have started some mega-wrapping. The house is a mess. Paper is everywhere, ribbons sprawled over several rooms, the kitchen is a disaster zone. I have two days left before we leave for Christmas and my friend from Paris is visiting one of those days. I'd love to be taking my time on this -- but time waits for no one!

This one is bugging me -- it's time for her dinner, perhaps even a bit overdue! So, I'll take care of that and back to the wrapping.

Meanwhile, I'm not sure how much I'll be blogging over the next five days. I'll do my best to check in but for now I will say have a wonderful and safe holiday.

Wishing you peace, happiness, healing and the very merriest over this holiday. Merry Christmas.

  2. Hello, Jeanie

  6. Jeanie, you certainly have a whirlwind of activities. I am sure the ditch walk provided a little tranquility especially since Harry was still in residence. I have seen Michael Buble in concert a couple of times, love his voice. I am also behind on my Christmas baking, but it will get finished. The snow looks magical…enjoy these last few days before Christmas!

  7. Jeanie, I'm so glad you made it to the Ditch this Christmas season. Spending time in nature really keeps us refreshed and ready to go. And isn't it something that you see Harry every time? I'm sure you are considered a friend. You got snow already, wonderful! Ours will probably be coming soon. Your goodies that you bake every year sound Yummy, especially those peppered nuts. I was just telling my son that I want an assortment of nuts! Your Christmas cards turned out nicely. And I'm glad the workers finished the job and cleaned up. That's an extra bonus that you don't see all the time. The trees are decorated beautifully, so festive and bright.

Have a Merry Christmas, Jeanie. And your blog always brings smiles to my face. : )

  8. You almost wore me out just reading about how much you are getting done! Yes, Michigan is really enjoying some beautiful weather, especially for the shortest days of the year. I hope you have a great time all week.

  9. Sorry you got the factory reset. I've had bootloops and to recovery, I did a factory reset. Everything on the SD card though, remains untouched.

Love that it's 50 and you got to walk and enjoy that. Sounds perfect.

Have you tried Calmed by Nature on YouTube? I love their Christmas choices as well as Halloween. So fun to have playing.

    Happy Holidays!

  10. Love seeing Harry, Jeanie. So glad he's sticking around. All of your baked goods sound delicious. Hope your friend gets home for the holidays! So glad you had good workers making your home warmer. You'll have to let us know if it makes a difference. Take care and Merry Christmas to you and Rick!

  11. When my Android makes trouble (it's old and slipped from my hand several times), I open the case, take out the battery carefully, and leave it out some 10 minutes, then put it back and close the case. Everything goes on as usual.
I've done it more than once. I wish to buy myself a new one, but haven't decided yet which model and price.
    Merry Christmas!

  12. Hustle and hustle! Your walk looks like the perfect respite before you jump right back into things. The little tree scene is lovely. I'm a bit jealous of your winter wonderland snow. So pretty. I do hope your friend recovers enough to come home for Christmas and that his continuing recovery is uncomplicated.

  15. Ohhhhh. All I can say is that I am exhausted just knowing everything you have to do and have achieved. Whewww girl, you are my hero. LOL A lovely post and I do like your cards. Have a rest and relaxation day.

  16. I think those Christmas cards you made are quite lovely! I'm impressed that you had the good sense to write a blog post AND take a walk -- both important things, but of the sort that get pushed aside easily. Of course, the hurrying makes one weary, and a refreshing walk is just the thing for renewing your energy. I'm inspired to take one myself right now. Merry Christmas!

  17. I always love seeing what you're up to Jeanie. I get that same face when my dinner is overdue. So cute. So glad you got to see Harry again before the big freeze sets in. Your cards are adorable. love them! Happy Christmas friend. take care and enjoy the family.

I too enjoy listening to Michael Bublé.
Great pictures, nice to see Harry and the squirrel.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and all good wishes for 2024.

  21. You've been busy Jeanie. December is crazy, isn't it? You have so much time until Christmas, and then wham, it is almost here. I mailed most of my cards today. Yours came out lovely, but I agree, I don't like speed creating. Does that mean next year I'll be on top of them? Probably not. Smile. I'm going to actually bake my cookies tomorrow. Good luck with your wrapping and all the other fun of the season. Merry Christmas to you. hugs-Erika

I hope your friend is home for Christmas. That would definitely be something to celebrate!
The past few weeks have just flown by. We've scaled back on a lot of things this year and I'm glad there isn't as much to get done.

  24. Time so runs, it is scary indeed! Your village looks fantastic - as do the cards, but your baking, LOL, just reading along I got a sugar-shock! ;-)
I´ll never understand the hacking-guys. Hope all turned out well!
No pressies here. Asked Big Niece if she has a wish, "no, I am happy!" - that was my pressie then! Good kid!
With this I wish you a wonderful Holiday-time!

  27. Christmas will come and go, Jeanie, as it always does and everything will be fine, especially if you decide not to impose pressure and stress on yourself. Just follow the wisdom of Harry the Heron and know that it’s just another day! All the best for the holidays and the New Year - David

  28. I call this stress to the max. But, hey, enjoy the cookie decorating with the kids on the 22nd. Happy holidays!

  29. Well, you have certainly been busy -- I'm exhausted just reading about it! :)

I hope you have a fantastic holiday!

  30. Good luck getting it all done; so you can put up your feet and sip a nice wine.
Loved that you did get a walk at the ditch and some decorating done too.
I haven't made peppernuts in years, but they are so good. Your fudge sounds yummy too. Love anything with lemon and cranberries too.
Good luck also with the Adroid issues. I hate when there are techie issues to deal with, it seems to take so much time to resolve.
    Love your card idea. Hummmm?
I have found several Christmas stations on YouTube that are nice Christmas music listening.
    Merry Christmas to you!

  31. It's surprising Harry is still hanging around, but he looks great. I wish you a Christmas filled with love. Take care of yourself.

  32. We are all feeling the Holiday Crunch!
Your trees look great! Your cards are beautiful! The Christmas baking you did looks delicious! And Harry looks as handsome as ever.
So with that said… I think you should take a minute and pull out your favorite Christmas CD. It will be refreshing as you have so much done already.
    Merry Christmas dear friend!

  33. Merry Christmas! I gave up on doing cards in time for Christmas and bought New Year's Cards instead. That decision took so much pressure off me. I highly recommend that to you for next year.

  34. I bet your friend Barb really appreciated the meal you brought to them. That is the best thing to bring someone dealing with a health situation. I am glad it sounds like her husband can be home for Christmas. Strokes can be so horrible. :(

I'm wishing you the merriest of Christmases! It always feels like we are all hustling and bustling and just racing to the finish line of Christmas. I know my mom feels that way every year. I get off easy since we just have a small gathering and we don't have many gifts to buy and I do zero baking! I might need to try some of what you suggested in this post, though. Like the PB fudge sounds really good and GF. So many of my faves from my childhood have gluten and while I can make them GF usually, they taste different sometimes and if you don't need to eat GF food, you don't so then I eat more than I should... Quite the conundrum - but champagne problems.

  35. Harry certainly is looking fine, and the squirrel is cute. Your snowy tree photos are beautiful. Lizzie is looking good. I hope you and Rick, and your family have a very Happy Christmas x

  36. Please take time to get your rest!
You are so busy, rest can slip away.
    Happy Holidays!

  37. I can't even imagine doing that much baking! I've made two kinds of cookies this year, and a carrot cake for a gathering. That's it! And I just picked up a turkey breast at the meat market today.I ordered it a few weeks ago, and if the smoked breast we had at Thanksgiving is any indication, this one should be fine, too.

I'm so glad you got to see Harry! Taking time for that walk was perfect. Now -- on to the celebrations. Enjoy it all, and don't let the stress get to you. After all, you've already had one of the best gifts ever: contractors who cleaned up after themselves!

  38. You've been quite active, Jeanie!

  41. You put me to shame. All I've done is try to figure out my color laser printer. All the info is on a DVD they sent with the printer, but I don't own a DVD player, so trying to figure things out on my own was a nightmare.

Your cookies look delicious and your cards are simply stunning. Have a safe, joyous, healthy Christmas, Boxing Day, Kwanzaa, and New Year, dear Jeanie.

  42. You have been busy! So sorry to hear about your phone. Yikes.
    And, Harry does look fine;)
I love the red squirrels. They are so pretty. We've got the gray ones in NC and they aren't nearly as pretty.
Hope your Holidays and your New Year are blessed.

  45. You have been busy, but glad you took time out to visit Harry and his little nutkin friend! All of your goodies sound delicious and sure to make some lucky recipients happy. Hope the new insulation helps with the heating costs - prices are so high these days. Your cards turned out so pretty despite being rushed and the trees look fun with all the little characters playing underneath. Hope you and Rick have a relaxing and peaceful Christmas, dear Jeanie. x K

  46. How quickly Christmas Day comes around? Is anyone ever fully prepared? That's the one great thing for me. No family. Nobody to have to cater for. Just me on my own. I can do what I like. Eat what I like. And when I like. And if I want to stay in my pajamas all day and eat chocolate then that's What I will do.
Have a wonderful day. it sounds as if it will be busy and full of good cheer. I don't sweat it if you don't get everything done, it's only one day. and it's more about the company than anything else.

  47. I'm in awe of your productivity, but that's what you do: creators create. Artists make art. And our world is better for it.

Much love to you and Rick and Mme. Lizzie.

  51. There has been a lot going on for you, Jeanie, and yeah to you for getting more done than you expected in such a short time. No holiday baking here, so candy gift bags instead to several residents and staff here. Cards did get sent and we decorated in and outside the apt, even if a bit less this year. Sending our best wishes to you and Rick for a very merry holiday and all the best for the coming New Year.

  54. I hope you had a nice Christmas It was 55 here yesterday. Not really Christmas for me without snow. UGH We sold the same tablecloth this year that Rick has under his tree. Cannot believe the season is almost over already. Nice to see Harry still here, but he should be going south for the Winter. I hope no one is feeding him to make him stay like some do here with the swans. Then they stop feeding them and then they have a horrible time foraging for food. Janice

  55. You did way more for Christmas than I did, Jeanie - no baking (except for bread) or Christmas wrapping here (we don't do presents). I felt so relieved once I got rid off all this. With just the Geek and myself, we prefer slow and lazy days. Now, if the girl would have come home, that would be a different story...
