I Just Keep Painting....

Sketchbook Revival has really pushed me to try new techniques and practice drawing and sketching as well as painting. So here we have the good, the bad and the ugly!

Below, another loosening up exercise. Draw something about your body you like (my face); something representing the hats you wear in life, and your front door.  

Some classes took me out of my comfort zone. This was one. The challenge was to do a face but only use three colors (and black and white). I chose orange, pink tones and dark purple. It turned out pretty well for this kind of thing.

But I thought, what if I tried that with one of my pet portraits. So, I blocked in a quick Lizzie drawing and tried it in deep blue, turquoise and green! Her eyes are a little wonky but it works!

The exercise below is in color mixing. The top left bright pink was the base color for all of these. The various colors are what happens when I mixed other colors from my palette with that pink.

This was a challenge for me -- a very loose floral from a photo. We did two smaller sketches and a larger piece.

Then, using some of the techniques from that, I painted tulips from one of my photos. I was quite pleased with this -- a different style for me, but I liked it.

This was a fun one -- Zoom drawings! I chose my monthly Zoom group to draw. We all looked MUCH younger in my drawings (I don't think anyone in the group was particularly flattered by this one but it was fun to do!)

I really enjoyed painting these fanciful mushrooms. In the class, we were supposed to do them, cut them out and use them in a mixed media piece but I didn't feel like hauling out all my mixed media materials so I did them as a watercolor in a fanciful grassy scene.

In the class below, we used pencil to create a person, smudging the lines with a cloth to soften things. Then using two colors -- Payne's Gray and metallic gold -- painted the piece. I'm not used to figure drawing so this was kind of fun.

Below, we're as loose as we can get! Wetting the paper well and using wet paint, we dropped three colors onto the page and let the paints run. Then, much as one would find shapes in a cloud, we were to sketch in the shapes we "saw" when our paints dried. I was glad I picked garden colors!

In this piece, we were given a challenge of duplicating a photo in paint, drawing by focusing on shape rather than on detail. I was quite pleased with how this one turned out.

Finally, after doing all the class things, I returned to one of my favorite subjects from a photo I took in Giverny. (I think those trees are too pink, don't you? They need to be toned down and with a bit of violet in them.)

It feels so good to paint again!
