Revisiting Old Photos....The Nature Collection

One of my fussy projects this winter has been to go through old albums and digitally save the photos I want and send the originals to those in them. In the course of filing the scans, I revisited my digital photo files and have been dumping a lot of those as well. I also rediscovered many from past years that, if they were ever shared here at all, were shared long ago. (Photo purging is a great thing to do on a frigid day!)

The ones I'm sharing with you today are nature photos. "Who's On First?"

This is the Barred Owl that found a lovely resting spot in the tree outside of Rick's brother's home.

I had never seen an owl so close, even one in "captivity."

And he was a stunner. I couldn't take my eyes off of him.

If I'd been using film, developing it would have cost a fortune!

Down the road from Randy and Elaine is a farm where we were fortunate enough to see some sweet lambs.

I will call the rest of this post "Feeding time" because these little guys were hungry.

They shared the field with some llamas, who appeared to take good care of them.

I'm a sucker for sheep, especially lambs. And these just captured my heart!

Closer to home, in Northern Michigan, a sheep farm also brought forth a bit of a feeding frenzy.

Meanwhile, at the home of children's book artist Gijsbert von Frankenhuyzen, I captured this one on film long ago.  It's so calm and pastoral, almost like a painting.

A smaller version of the feeding frenzy took place outside my kitchen window at least fifteen or twenty years ago when a Mama finch hatched a brood of five.

Mama (or Papa?) always kept an eye out!

I named them Ichi, Ni, San, Shi and Go, which is One-Two-Three-Four-Five in Japanese.

Feeding time was the greatest fun!

They were loud -- and darling. I never saw them leave. We went away for the weekend and when we came home, the wreath on which the next was balanced had blown down. Or maybe it was knocked down as they fledged. Either way, I missed them!

There was a feeding frenzy of a different kind at the Elk Park up north several summers ago.

You can count on seeing the elk and fallow deer come up around dinner time where they gather for a food fest.

And, if you hit it at feeding time, this is about all you'll see!

I may be sharing a few travel look-backs in coming weeks.

I don't get out a lot so looking back is good fun!

  1. These are fantastic photo Jeanie. Especially the barred owl. We have some who nest near us, and I am lucky on occasion to see them. But this guy seems like he has a lot of personality. Especially when the squirrel peeked his face over. That was a lucky shot for certain. And a very brave squirrel too. Thanks for sharing these; they were lots of fun to see. Sta warm and hope you aren't in the path of the latest storm. And Happy February too. Hugs-Erika

  2. These are amazing photos, Jeanie, and sorting through them sounds like a cozy project for a cold and confining winter... Sure would love to see that owl turn up in a water color project (hint)...

  3. My favorite pictures are of the finches -- what a great privilege to be able to record that nestful. I am forever surprised at how satisfying it is to go back and look at the pictures that I had forgotten, of so much that was beautiful, fun, or fascinating, that I have been present for. These events in your life provide me a lot of vicarious enjoyment, too. Thank you!

    Happy February!

  5. Those owl shots are fabulous. I agree that the invention of the digital camera has saved us all a fortune. Or at least those of us who take as many photos as you and I take. Love the lambs, and the deer are so cute and funny. Great to look back because these are all precious and make me wish Spring was on the way, instead of the snow we will get tomorrow.

  8. Hello Jeanie,

Wow, your nature collection is awesome. I love the Barred Owl, the Elk and lamb. The names you gave the finches are cute, they are adorable. It is fun looking back, great photos. Take care, enjoy your day and week ahead.

  9. What a fun collection! There's a well-known owl at the Lady Bird Johnson wildflower center in Austin who nests at eye level. Needless to say, there are a lot of portraits!

I need to do some culling myself, and from what I see of our forecast, the next few days will offer some opportunity. I'll work in the heat and I'll work in the cold, but I sure don't work when it's below freezing!

  10. Jeanie, I love these! Great photos!! I especially live the owl and the sheep photos. You're so right - the one at the artist's home looks like a painting. Frame worthy!

  11. All stunning, Jeanie, but it will come as no surprise to you that my favourites are the superb shots of the Barred Owl, a magnificent bird. Well done!

  15. Lovely photos, Jeanie. I love the up close of the owl. Sheep aren’t often seen around here and neither are elk, but I have seen both on many occasions. Thanks for sharing!

  16. This is great, Jeannie - the pictures of the Elk are fabulous! I've never seen an owl out in the wild. I'd love to capture photos of that. Looking forward to more your your looking back!

  17. Revisiting photos is a great idea for these shut-in winter days. You really found some wonderful birds and animals to share.

I've been thinking about doing something like that. Tackling the job of cleaning out old files, though -- too much!

  19. Those owl photos are amazing. I sort of wonder what he was thinking about as you took those photos!

  20. I enjoyed all your animal photos. Great shots! And isn't digital so much easier to manage than film?!

  21. That is quite a session that you had with the owl. I encountered one in the woods once but it was farther up the tree, and I didn’t have mu long lens. I took a few snaps for the record and moved on.

  22. Such a fun post Jeanie. love seeing the owls up close. I hear them at night, but I never see them. The animals look so cute. How sweet the birds are. Have a happy week.

  23. Oh Jeanie, I've been doing the same thing....going through files and getting rid of some photos, and seeing others that I must keep and remember taking them. Do you know I've never seen an Owl is person, and have always wanted to? The lambs and llamas is an interesting photo. And that is a sweet photo of the Mama feeding her babies. The Elk photos are wonderful! That behind photo is something else! Yes, looking back at old photos is fun for sure. Great photos, Jeanie!

  24. I need to show this post to Paul tonight. He will LOVE it. He's very into animals/nature right now, and has been learning so much thanks to Wild Kratts on PBS. And he's always loved owls! Many nights, we can hear a owl hooting in the evening. I think it must live down by the creek that is probably 1/4 of a mile from our house.

He'll get a kick, especially, out of the behinds of the elk/deer! He loves to point out brown bear's butt on the back of the book, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear." Gotta love the humor of a 4yo...

  25. Wonderful photos. I recently got a chance to see an barn owl up close enough to touch with no cage between us. They are wonderful and curious creatures.

  26. Great photos. I hope you do a calendar.
I hope that is a live rabbit.

  27. This is such a darling and happy post. I love all the babies, the row of butts, really everything. Share old photos anytime - I love it.

  28. Jeanie, I enjoyed this post so much. Animals are always a great joy. Those little birds are something, waiting (not so patiently, I'm sure) for mama to feed them. I can remember a couple of years ago when the little ones that nested in the pink house were big enough to fly the nest. Mama or Daddy sat outside on the little fence for days calling to them and they wouldn't come out. When they were ready, out them came and were gone within minutes..Happy February..xxoJudy

  29. I saw my first barred owl on a guard rail the other day. We had spent the day looking for Snowys without any luck, so seeing this guy was great.

  30. So fun to see a squirrel so close to an owl, simply interesting.
Hi Jeannie, keep on having fun with your photos.

  31. Great photos Jeanie. I love the owl pics and the sweet lambs. The baby birds too. How clever to name them Japanese names.
You are a good example. I need to do some scanning.

  32. I am so glad you reshared Jeanie. These are marvelous photos. That is one magnificent owl and the one with the squirrel? Fabulous! Loved the other photos too. Thanks so much for the smiles they brought to my face this evening.

  33. Fabulous photos Jeanie. It's quite the time consuming job coping all our photos. Bravo for you sending the photos to the owners. I have been working on this for years and far from finished. These nature photos are so beautiful, thanks for sharing.

  34. I enjoyed all the pictures, but the owl is wonderful, I haven't seen one this good before, so much detail, such a beautiful creature.

  35. LOL, I remember doing that in... 1998. Ingo´s scanner was that slow I went grocery shopping inbetween!!!
    The second is soooo cute!
    Oh, and the lambs!
    And another "Popo-pic", LOL.
Feeding time with birds looks stressy. More popos.
    This sure was fun!

  36. I just loved looking at those birds at feeding time. So adorable! You certainly have the knack of photographing animals.

  37. Exquisite photos, Jeanie! You have a treasure trove of photography that you can just look back and enjoy or do something with them. With your creative spirit, I’m sure you can think of many potential art works derived from them.

  38. Jeanie, I thoroughly enjoyed this post. The owl is wonderful, we had them in VA. They were the Great Horned Owls and were so majestic. And the lambs took my heart as we had them also when we were in VA. There is nothing sweeter than newborn lambs. When they have been around people they grow into precious older sheep with quite a bit of personality.

I'm enjoying the winter days - more snow for us on Friday. Take care and have a wonderful February.

  39. Great photos! I love the owl and the baby finches -- especially the "action shot" of them all waiting for mom to feed them. And I love the rear ends of the elk! LOL

  41. I love the barred owl. I've never seen any sort of owl, so I envy you.

We had finches here last winter. I know they came from the north and they leave to go back in spring. Maybe they were yours!

  42. You are doing what I really need to do, Jeanie! Going through old photos has been a task that I have put off way too long. The owl photos are fantastic! How exciting to view him through your camera. And all the sheep and birds and llamas are so sweet.

  43. Wonderful photos Jeanie . . .
I was in a similar mood today with flowers.
The sunshine did it to me,
almost three o’clock and all I have
accomplished is writing out a check for taxes
and hunting for old flower pictures.
    Love lamb and goat babies.
Your Owl find provided some LIKE as well!

  44. Great that you have those to look back on. And, I agree: it's a great project for a Winter day.

I've bottle fed lambs before. Bet you'd love to do that if you haven't already.

  47. Last year I tackled my digital photos to thin out the files. It's such a tedious job and I never finished. I'm more frugal about the photos I keep these days. Love your collection of old photos, especially of the deer mooning me :)

  48. You've shared some fabulous photographs here, I did enjoy seeing them all.
